"Oliveros has developed a profound understanding of the breath, and this knowledge is applied to her immaculate sense of phrasing with the accordion, the instrument which most closely mimics the functioning of the human lung. The use of electronics is extremely effective as well. To hear a sustained, stable accordion chord suddenly swoop downwards in a fast glissando is quite an eerie experience. Great singing.......2006-03-01

Roberta Alexander is stunning in these songs of Bernstein. Her voice simply shimmers. Really beautiful.

Roberta Alexander is right on top of this recording. She has a beautiful and strong voice, but more importantly, she has perfect command of the music and idiom of these and Ives' songs. The emotional range of the songs is very wide, ranging from playful to thoughtful to sorrowful but she makes all of them sound very natural.

The Five Kid Songs express the imagination of a small child (Jupiter has seven moons, or is it nine? Saturn has a million billion trillion sixty-nine) and it would be very easy to perform them in a childish way, talking down as many adults do - the composer expressly stated that they should not be performed this way and in fact Alexander sings them with a perfectly natural innocence. La Bonne Cuisine is sung with a strong drive, and although it's hard to imagine what anyone should do with excerpts from a cooking book it's still compelling music. The other songs are also nice but not as memorable - as for the songs from Candide, they are beautiful but get the complete recording on Deutsche Grammophon, directed by Bernstein himself (there are two; I prefer the live version, ASIN B000001GD2).

Tan Crone does more than just provide a background; she adds her own interpretation on piano to add even more feeling to the music.

This album is very nice indeed. There is so very much to this album - one must listen many many times in order to hear the full scope of what is happening. Music of a true bard.

An excellent Bernstein anthology with a few unusual choices.......2005-09-21

Bernstein basically spent half his recording life at Clumbia, now Sony, and the other half at DG. Although the composer's Columbia years produced his best work as conductor of his own music, DG has triumphed with a greatest hits'greatest bits anthology. Everything on here has been well chosen and paced in such a way that you can listen form beginning to end and feel that you've been enriched.

A good sampling of Bernstein.......1998-12-27

This 2 CD set includes a wide variety of Bernstein music, many or all taken from other CDs and put together for a Ballet Revue by John Neumeier. You will be taken from Maestro Bernstein's light-hearted work to the more serious compositions. Truly a "full Bernstein" collection although one could wish for something from Chichester Psalms. There are so many wonderful numbers included on this 2 CD set, that I would recommend it with one major caution. I felt that the rendition of "A Simple Song" by Cheryl Studer was abrasive and not at all like the beautiful song that it should be. Still, I had not heard Bernstein's "Anniversaries" (works for piano played by Sebastian Knauer, apparently written for various people... alas, the notes don't fill me in on these!) and they are little gems, the musical theater selections were pure Bernstein (and showed a bit of where Sondheim came from). Judy Blazer is a delight, Roberta Alexander sounds lovely, and Gidon Kremer, performing in the Serenade after Plato's Symposium was quite enjoyable. My only big disappointment aside from the Studer song is that there is no video (to my knowledge) of this dance performance.

Dorothy Dorow is expertly suited to the range of song styles on this selection of lieder by members of the Second Viennese School. From cabaret songs to romantic lied to atonal decadence, she is the kind of artist who can discover the familiar in the exotic, and vice versa. Her renditions of the Berg songs are evocative and lovely, and she attains perfect balance in the Schoenberg cabaret numbers between Viennese sentimentality and campy burlesque. --Joshua Cody

Ives' songs comprise some of the most beautiful music ever written. I've never heard any other recordings but it's hard to imagine any could be better than this collaboration between Roberta Alexander and Tan Crone. Alexander matches a powerful voice with great emotional range - from the romantic "Songs My Mother Taught Me" to the spright "Memories" and from the forceful "Slugging A Vampire" to the lonely "Spring Song" - and has the diction to make these very American songs sound completely natural. The piano score is more than just accompaniment - it's beautiful in it's own right and Tan Crone adds depth to all the songs.

Despite some seemingly atonal harmonies these songs are by no means "emotionally distant"; in fact, Ives really tried to match words and music to enhance each other. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but they all strike a chord.

There is a second set of songs on the same label (called "Ives: Songs, Volume 2") which I can also highly recommend.
