Newman's music is both rousing and plaintive. "One More Day" is worth the price of admission alone. Quite simply, beautiful.

Since this stuff is sold out in Europe, it was good to find it at your place. Shipment etc. was all OK and meanwhile we enjoy the music.
Thanks a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Ragtime (1981 Film Soundtrack).......2007-02-20

Beautiful music. It sets a mood throughout that is rather sad no matter what the words say.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful achievement .......2006-02-25

The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28

I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.

Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!

4 out of 5 stars Exercises - and More.......2006-10-22

This set of pieces is in many ways constructed like exercises for guitarists. But with York's gift for melody and the unexpected turn it's much more than that. Very listenable, and as always, the playing is superb.

1 out of 5 stars Windom Hill Misses Gucci.......2006-10-01

This CD reveals two things about York: he's not a composer and he needs a wardrobe change. The compositions are trite little minatures that belong on a Windom Hill Sampler: cute, but hardly brilliant. Save yer money.

5 out of 5 stars Charming Compositions.......2004-01-29

Andrew York has become well-known through his activity in the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (without a doubt the most rocking quartet of any kind. period.)

On this recording, we get a taste of York's brilliance as a composer. I can't help but make a comparison to Aaron Copland. York, who clearly has an intimidating understanding of both jazz and classical composition, has turned to the heart of music. The pieces will not baffle you in the sense of comprehension; however, I'm always floored with the ease and grace of his choices. He understands the guitar. His pieces are wonderful for students of all abilities. The 8 discernments are pieces that I have given to countless students. There is quite simply a very catchy nature to his work. From the soulful lyricism of In Sorrow's Wake to the riffy "Emergence," York, as a composer is a breath of fresh air. While you may only know his name vicariously through John Williams' recording of "Sunburst" or the LAGQ, I encourage you to get to know Andrew York's work. He's not a bad player either.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Composer and Great Player.......2003-09-03

This is a great CD! I am impressed, Andrew York is both a wonderful composer and great player. I saw him live and it was amazing. I really like York's compositions: they are modern, but not in a dissonant way; they are beautiful, yet sophisticated; they are pleasant, yet very engaging and emotionally complex. If you want to hear great unique classical guitar, get some Andrew York!

4 out of 5 stars Another mixed bag from CDCM.......2002-04-07

This twelfth volume in the on-going series of computer music releases from the Consortium to Distribute Computer Music features the work of just three composers, Richard Karpen, John Rahn and Diane Thome, all of whom are based at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. Each of these composers is well established in their field and each has developed their own distinctive musical voice, making this something of a varied release, both in terms of compositional styles and intentions, and in terms of the musical forces deployed.

First up is Diane Thome's "The Ruins of the Heart", written in 1990. Scored for soprano, orchestra and tape, this substantial, 18-minute work represents a characteristic blend of post-Romantic orchestral lushness, post-Modernist rhythmic structuring and harmonic simplicity, and powerful late 20th century computer-realised synthetic soundscape. The composition itself is a setting of texts drawn from Edmund Helminski's translations of the 13th century Sufi poet, Jeláluddin Rumi. At times embedded within the orchestral textures, at others soaring above them, the voice of soprano - Mary Henderson on this recording - threads lines from these translations through the composition, albeit with frequent rests, while the orchestra elaborates for a time on the imagery suggested by the words. Each of the orchestral interludes in turn gives way to the synthetic soundworld of the tape part, itself providing a contrasting commentary on the material. The work provides a gentle introduction to the rather more severe offerings occupying the rest of the disc.

John Rahn is represented by two works. His 13-minute tape work "Miranda" (1990) uses a reading of the USA's so-called Miranda Warning (the US police's standard reading of an arrested suspect's rights) digitally edited and rearranged to build a somewhat grotesque study in reconstructed vocal texturing. At times almost comic (especially at the point where the chopped up words start coming out as 'do you have the right time?') the work nevertheless also has a disturbing aspect to it. While being moderately interested first time through, this is not, however, a work that stands up well to repeated listenings. In contrast to this purely vocal offering, the somewhat shorter "Kali" (1986) uses heavy washes of computer-shaped noise in an attempt, the composer tells us in the CD sleeve notes, "to make the persona [of the goddess Kali] present to the listener." Any listener actually anxious to enter the presence of the Hindu Goddess of Death and Destruction is welcome to indulge themselves all they wish. Personally, I'll pass on a repeat audience, if it's all the same with you. I've no idea where this particular goddess came by her girdle of severed heads but I have no intention of hanging around to find out.

Richard Karpen's music provides something of a half-way house between the severe sonic abstractions of John Rahn and the more romantic lyricism of Diane Thome. His 7-minute tape work "Denouement" (1991) opens with a synthesised deep base chant, out of which more abstract computer-processed textures gradually emerge to form an engulfing envelope of saw-edged drones and visceral tonalities, before a rising piano figure finally disperses the nightmare in a quite magical manner. By contrast, the same composer's "Saxonomy", for live saxophonist and computer-realised tape, dating from 1990-1, inhabits the same world of large-scale complex forms as the disc's opening track, but features a much more sear and acerbic series of instrumental and computer-processed tones and textures. These, together with the hectic and impatient pace to its 23 minutes, create music that demands of the listener the utmost attention and imbue it with an intensity that is altogether breathtaking. Drained you may well be by the end of it, but what a way to go!

In conclusion, then, this release provides an interesting view across several styles of composition emanating from the environs of Washington State, USA and is well worth a listen, whatever your preferences in contemporary serious music. The John Rahn works may be a bit hard for some people to take, but the quality of the other items on the disc more than makes up for them.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific playing & recording from a neglected master.......2004-12-07

This is a great pairing of two late-Romantic composers. Strauss & Elgar were good friends, and admired each others' work, so this is an appropriate coupling. Steinberg has a very 'heart-on-sleeve' approach that works surprisingly well in Elgar (we Brits think that 'outsiders' can't master the English idiom, but that's totally untrue!); we feel the affection that Elgar had for his friends.

Steinberg's Rosenkavalier Suite is very well-balanced (there's no 'official' suite, though Strauss sanctioned several versions in his life-time, and Leinsdorf did one for Decca Phase 4 in the 60's, though I've never come across that on CD). Don Juan has bags of swagger and pathos at the end.

Steinberg was less well-known in the UK than he should have been, and I have always admired his music-making. Any fellow-Steinbergians out there?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2003-01-09

If Ralph Towner is not the best composer for guitar these days, this guy is. One of the best classical guitar CDs I have heard, and the pieces are an absolute joy to play (while not being terribly difficult).

    4 out of 5 stars Worth buying.......2000-09-19

Now it is reprinted! This, originally 1994 classical guitar solo album of Andrew York is a must for his fans and recommendable for others. Most of the songs are not too hard for an intermediate guitar player, and though you may think they'll be somewhat plain, some of them are really sparkling. In short, they are beautiful and if you can play them by yourself you can appreciate them further. ...and they're not so hard! :)
