5 out of 5 stars Haunting, Ethereal and Wonderful!.......2005-09-28

This is a haunting, ethereal and totally wonderful recording. (By the way, you can read a delightful narrative of how it came to be in William Zinsser's captivating book "Willie and Dwike: An American Profile".) It is an entire chapter in the book, but here is the short version: Willie Ruff taped himself playing Gregorian chants at St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice, Italy back in 1983. He lugged his bulky audio recording machine into the Cathedral after finally getting permission from a monsignor to play his French Horn inside. It was at night after everyone else had left for the day. Besides Ruff, the ony others inside were the monsignor and Zinsser. Mr. Zinsser is a longtime friend of my late father, Richard Mohr, and we had an occasion recently to talk about it. Today, more than twenty years later, the memory of Ruff's playing in that place on that day is as fresh now as it was then. What was recorded on audio tape become a record and eventually, this CD. The acoustics of the Cathedral were perfect for the sounds of Ruff's French Horn. The music was warm, haunting, and stunning, all at the same time. The sound on this CD will stay with you forever. It is music to be cherished.
