Gustav Mahler: Symphonie No. 9

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
Herbert von Karajan's Gustav Mahler performances were highly variable, and he recorded the Ninth only a few years before this live version came out. That performance was so-so, and featured a spectacular missed entrance in the third movement that somehow made it onto the master tape. Very embarrassing indeed. So it's no surprise that von Karajan wanted to do it again, and this time he really got it right. This is one of the great Ninths: stunning playing, an interpretation of real emotional urgency and strength, and--in this remastered "gold edition"--sound that's far, far better than von Karajan's digital average. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, and so cheap!.......2005-03-17

In response to the reviewer below, yes, some of the recordings do not have the best sound quality. But that's not what this is about, it's about great recordings of the century.
There are two discs, each with about 18 tracks, averaging about 4 minutes each, of excerpts and individual movements of the some of the most famous of the 150 "GROCs."

In the booklet it has a few interesting (sometimes not that interesting) facts about each of the 150 performances.

If you don't mind excerpts of pieces or isolated movements, this would be a worthwhile purchase, especially for the bizarrely reasonable price.

1 out of 5 stars Not that great.......2004-11-19

If this is supposed to be an album of "the greatest" -- I wasn't too impressed. The quality didn't seem that good and the selections, well, not all that popular to my mind.

      Amazon.com essential recording

Herbert von Karajan made a studio recording of the Ninth with the Berlin Philharmonic that appeared in 1981, but he was apparently dissatisfied with it and pressed for this remake, recorded at a performance during the Berlin Festival Weeks of 1982. The result is one of the finest of all his achievements--a riveting account of this great work that blazes with a visionary intensity from first bar to last. There is grip and majesty here, sovereign control over the Mahler's vast canvas, but also an extraordinary "of the moment" quality that is unusual in Karajan's discography. The sound on this recent "Karajan Gold" remastering is excellent. --Ted Libbey

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars not my favorite, but one of Karajan's greatest recordings.......2006-12-31

This is a very great performance, but not one that I turn to all that often. Even in its "Karajan Gold" edition, the sound is less than ideal. It's also sort of a Brucknerian approach - very marmorial. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I prefer the quicker tempi and slightly sharper textures in Abbado's Berlin remake (fits on a single disc too). Also, for this type of approach, I feel that Bertini does an even better job of capturing the zen-like, "otherwordliness" of the slow and quiet passages sprinkled throughout the piece. Bertini's is also just better recorded, but you can only get it by purchasing the box of his entire cycle. Still, all that considered, I think that any budding Mahler enthusiast should hear this Karajan performance at least once. It's recoreded somewhat upfront, which only goes to highlight the huge dynamic range Karajan frequently got out of any work. I once saw Karajan do the Bruckner 5th in Vienna, and I absolutely thought that the Musikverein was going to come tumbling down upon all of us - all of that with an orchestra that's no larger than that in the Brahms first! Come to think of it, "go for the Gold" - you NEED to hear it at least one time.

4 out of 5 stars Emotionally Cool Mahler.......2006-08-11

There are several approaches to this work, two of the most common are the objective, straight-laced interpretation and on the other hand, the emotionally draining, full on Late Romantic splendor type. The objective approach can be too severe and uninvolving, just check out Pierre Boulez. The Late Romantic approach can get too kitschy and Hollywood film music-esque, just check out Bernstein's final recording. However the best conductor can match the right passion with the right mental clarity. Does Karajan do that? Maybe, maybe not.

The Berlin Philharmonic recorded Mahler's Ninth live with Bernstein a few years prior to this performance. That Bernstein recording is terrific, very impassioned and moving but the playing is not perfect and the sound is scrawny, edgy, typical DG stuff from the 70's. Then the Berlin Philharmonic recorded with Karajan in the studio. Apparently Karajan was not satisfied enough and he went on to record the work live in concert just a couple of years later and here we have that recording. It is stunning in many ways, the orchestral balances, the richness of the orchestra, the tempo choices and the final five minutes of the adagio especially are better than any other version ever recorded. Such calm and beauty magnified by Karajan. The opening movement, Andante Comodo, also enfolds majestically with patience aplenty but no self-indulgence.

However the Rondo Burleske movement is not as rough and intense as it could have been and the most passionate parts of the adagio coast by without the heartbreaking involvement that Bernstein could bring to these moments.

Even though I am not a big fan of Mahler, I love to hear a great version of his Ninth and yes, this Karajan version ranks as a great one but I had hoped for more.

5 out of 5 stars A moving perfomance, flowing with beauty.......2006-03-27

As several reviewers have already noted, this is among the best recordings available of Mahler's 9th. The orchestral playing in the fourth movement is simply stunning. I had a lot of trouble deciding which recording of this piece to buy. I listened to several, including the legendary Bernstein/Concertgebouw and historical Bernstein/Berlin. I chose this one for its flowing beauty. Of course it's really a matter of personal taste--neither of these recordings is a bad choice. If you like spending money on cds, buy all three.

5 out of 5 stars Two great Karajan Mahler Ninths...hard to choose.......2005-10-18

In terms of value, this famous 1982 live performance of the Mahler Ninth is no bargain compared to the studio version Karajan made just two years previously. Not only is the studio version part of a bargain two-fer, but it includes as filler some excellent mid-Seventies performances of Mahler songs with the wonderful Christa Ludwig.

Critics have gravitated to this live Ninth, despite its high price, as the better of the two, although the Gramophone awarded both the same prize when they came out. So the Amazon reviewer's comment that the studio version was "so-so" is ridiculous--the Gramophone itself declares that it is difficult to pick between the two. Karajan didn't change his basic tempos (mostly quite broad) or his somewhat detached Apollonian view of the score--detached, that is, compared to the totally involving and emotionally untempered Bernstein, also with Berlin, from 1979. What other orchestra can claim to have made three great Mahler Ninths in the space of three years!

What Bernstein misses that Karajan abundantly supplies is astonishing clarity, virtuosic orchestral playing that stands above any other version on CD, and a total command of line and balance. Those qualities count for a lot, and they are present in both sets. I do think, listening to them side by side, that Karajan got more of everything from the Berlin Phil. under live concert conditions--the whole thing feels more spontaneous, spacious, and alert on the musicians' part. But here we are comparing two superlative accounts. In terms of recorded sound, the digital 1982, as remastered here, is excellent in every way, while the earlier analog recording is a bit studio bound with less air and space around the individual instruments.

All in all, these readings are so stupendous in their musicality and virtuosity that it's worth buying them both.

1 out of 5 stars An Annual Swimsuit Issue of a Mahler Ninth.......2005-10-03

I can understand all the praises poured down on this recording. The recording is almost magical and the orchestral playing leaves nothing to be desired. It is just like the Sports Illustrated Annual Swimsuit Issue. The girls are so pretty, sensuous, and beautifully photographed. And Yes, both are utterly devoid of spiritual communication while still remaining attractive. The Immense Hollow is probably the only thing Karajan delivers, as he does most of the time. There are many great recordings of Mahler Ninth, Klemperer, Boulez, young Bernstein, and even Abbado with Mahler Youth Orchestra, for example, which will surely amaze you at the very personal level. This recording is a true Hollywood version of Mahler Ninth, although some people mistakenly label Bernstein with that name. If you need to buy Karajan's record, I would recommend his Vienna New Year's Concert. That was the only time I found Karajan really satisfying.

If you like classical music, you should definitely get this set. Four CD's for no more than $14, and what good CD's they are!

It includes perennial favorites like "Pomp and Circumstance" and "The Barber of Seville," also a particularly beautiful rendition of the "Dance of the Red Flute." Of course, with a whole four discs, you'll find plenty of your own songs from this work to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch mostly 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound.......2005-11-10

"Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music" consists mostly of top notch 1950s mono recordings in excellent sound, from DG's back catalog. I knew of Ferenc Fricsay (1914-1963) mostly from his recording of Bartok's Piano Concertos 1,2,and 3 with pianist Geza Anda. Fricsay also recorded Mozart's operas "Don Giovanni" and "Die Zauberflote", both with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the cast for DG; also Beethoven's 9th Symphony; Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra", and "Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta", all for DG. Fricsay did not live a long time, dying at age 48 from cancer, but he made alot of recordings from 1949 until his death in 1963, many of them sadly hidden in DG's vaults for decades.

DG has given the public a great release with this 9 disc set of Fricsay recordings, mostly in mono, but excellent sound. Do not be afraid of the mono sound: it is very clear and balanced, in many cases better than many stereo and even digital recordings made more recently. Included are Beethoven's Symphony 1; Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with the vocal duets included; Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony; Franck's Symphonic variations and Rachmaninoff Paganini Variations with Swiss pianist Margrit Weber; Haydn's "The Seasons" (complete, live performance with Maria Stader, Ernst Haeflinger, and Joseph Greindl); works of Falla, Francaix, Hindemith, Frank Martin, Hartmann, and others. There is a wide variety of music and you will not be disappointed.

Most of these recordings are with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, which Fricsay conducted for the majority of his conducting career. The RIAS orchestra was "Radio in the American sector" of Berlin, a part of West Berlin during the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Some tracks are with the Berlin Philharmonic, others with the Berlin Radio Orchestra. In all cases, the orchestras play very well, responding with great precision to every nuance of Fricsay's direction.

I believe Fricsay would have wider recognition had he lived longer. He was roughly a contemporary of Karajan, Solti, Giulini, and Bernstein, and is sadly underrated today. Perhaps this collection will help to boost his reputation with a new generation of music lovers born after his time. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great conductor's legacy of great performances of music of a wide variety of composers........2005-09-18

Some two years after Mr. Richman posted his review, I wish only to support his high rating of these masterful performances by one of the greatest conductors of the mid-twentieth century. These recordings are gifts of grace. The fact that this collection remains available is little short of a miracle. And in addition thre is a Fricsay set in the series of "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" also still available. Many other recordings of performances under the baton of Ferenc Fricsay are to be found if one searches under his name on Amazon. His recordings of Verdi's Requiem and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on DG remain among the greatest ever made of either of these two eternal masterpieces.

Try the $12.00 2CD "great Conductors" set first. At that price you can't lose. I predict that having heard those recordings you will quickly seek out and purchase "Ferenc Fricsay, A Life in Music." Too expensive? Not at all. It's worth every penny. It's easily worth several months of anyone's budget for buying CDs. And the recorded interview with Fricsay, already ill and seemingly knowing his death is approaching, will inspire you even as it breaks your heart. His death as he approached his 40th birthday was an incalculable loss to the Western classical tradition. Yet we do have the recordings -- go and listen to them!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant "Life in Music" Rescued from the Vaults.......2003-08-13

Now that Deutsche Grammophon is part of Universal, we have seen some interesting things happen, and not all of them bad. What I'm referring to in this case is the new "Original Masters" Limited Edition Box Set series. Finally, the classical music world has taken a page out of the jazz reissue handbook -- put out a quality product featuring rare recordings but make its availability limited, and people will snatch it up.

Now in its second round of the "Original Masters" box sets, DG has chosen to follow-up on the success of the "Great Conductors of the Century" series. They have just released two glorious 9-disc collections of the performances of conductors Ferenc Fricsay and Igor Markevitch, the vast majority of which have been previously unavailable on CD.

This particular set, "A Life in Music," showcases some of the numerous recordings made by the great conductor Ferenc Fricsay for Deutsche Grammophon, many of which have been rare (and expensive) collector's items for years. As the track information is non-existent above, I will try to be of assistance.

The first disc contains Beethoven's 1st Symphony (1953) and the Overture and Incidental Music to Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream (1950) both with the Berlin Philharmonic (BP), and Prokofiev's 1st Symphony with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (BRSO) from 1954.

Disc two features Mahler's Ruckert-Lieder with Maureen Forrester (BRSO, 1958), and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony (BRSO, 1959).

Discs three begins with Respighi's orchestration of Rossini's La Boutique Fantasque (BRSO, 1955) and ends with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade (BRSO, 1956).

Disc four features the great Waltzes, Polkas, Overtures and Marches of the Strauss Family (all with BRSO from 1949-52). Included here are The Blue Danube, Vienna Blood, Musical Joke, Pizzicato-Polka, Die Fledermaus, The Gypsy Baron, Voices of Spring, Roses from the South, Morning Papers, Annen-Polka, Chit-Chat Polka, and the Radzetky March.

Disc five focuses on Fricsay as an accompanist with pianist Margrit Weber (and the BRSO). Together they tackle Falla's Nights in the Garden of Spain (1957), Francaix's (1956) and Honegger's (1955) Concertos for Piano, Franck's Symphonic Variations (1957) and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1960).

Disc six shines the spotlight on 20th Century composers. Here we get Von Einem's Zwischenspiel Interlude (1949), Hindemith's Symphonic Dances (1950), Hartmann's 6th Symphony (1955), and Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante (1950), with Gerty Herzog on piano, Sylvia Kidd on harpsichord and Irmgard Helmis on harp.

On discs seven and eight, Fricsay performs a memorable account of Haydn's The Seasons. This is a live recording with the Berlin RSO from 1961 featuring soprano Maria Stader, tenor Ernst Haefliger, bass Josef Greindl and the St. Hedwigs Cathedral Choir, Berlin.

The final disc, number nine, wraps things up with "Ferenc Fricsay: A Life Retold," a 57-miunte interview complete with excerpts of memorable performances.

Despite the fact that most of these recordings are in mono (only the selections on disc two, and the Paganini Rhapsody are in stereo), the first rate performances more than compensate for any audio shortcomings. Well, I guess the consolidation of the music industry isn't so bad after all, as long as I can look forward to more reissues like Ferenc Fricsay: A Life in Music.
