Mozart: Requiem / Davis (Penguin Music Classics Series)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
What a work this is! All the fright, longing for peace, and inevitability that come with thoughts of death and the hereafter, put together by Mozart, a man who really should have lived longer. But rather than dote on that thought, author Stephen Jay Gould, in his heavy, perceptive notes accompanying this release, suggests that, rather, we have on this CD "the most sublime swan song ever written." And this performance has all the dignity and pathos one could want. Helen Donath, Yvonne Minton, Ryland Davies, and Gerd Nienstedt are the fine soloists; and the orchestra and chorus are lucid, tender, and passionate, by turns. No CD collection should be without a Mozart Requiem, and this one is a gem. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars It IS "the best".......2005-10-24

When I first started gettng into classical music - Mozart, in particular - I had no idea of the multitude of various versions of his works that I'd have to choose from. So, when I started searching for CD's to buy, I was soon overwhelmed.

This CD was one of several that I chose in the end, since it had some pieces on it that I had heard of before. I couldn't have made a luckier choice out of all the options I had at my finger tips.

The versions of the pieces on this CD turned out, many years later, to truly be the best versions I will ever hear. Mozart performed by The Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields, conducted by Sir Neville Marriner, is in my opinion the finest out there.

My favorite peices by Mozart I found on this disc - "Concerto For Flute And Harp In C K 299: Andantino", and "Serenade In B Flat K 361: Gran Partita: Adagio" - the latter performed by The Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Both peices are so gorgeous, it is hard to believe they were written by a mortal.

These works by Mozart are beautiful. This CD, along with a few others, was one of the greatest introductions to Mozart that I could have hoped to find. I'm glad I heard these versions first. They became the standard by which I measured all subsequent searches for Mozart music.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, it actually is the best!.......2000-03-31

When I first saw this CD, I thought, "Hey, I've never heard most of this before! How can it be 'The Best Of'?" To put things simply, that was my own loss. Technically, this CD is brilliant; the playing is on a level so high it's difficult to find matches for it (I still haven't found a recording of the Finale of Mozart's 22nd Piano Concerto that I like more than this one, for example). The ASMF is brilliant as always, but... here's the thing... so is everyone else. The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, for example, plays the Adagio from the Gran Partita serenade... gasp... BETTER than the aforementioned ASMF on their release of it! Even the tiny Klavierstuck is played clearly and jauntily and with all the spirit we've come to associate with Mozart. All playing-quality issues aside, however, what pushes this album over the edge into greatness is the variety of its selections. This CD gives its listeners a view of the total range of Mozart's tonal expression, using the works that best demonstrate those various moods and styles of composition. It's a perfectly balanced musical experience, and as far as I'm concerned, everyone's Mozart collection should include this masterful CD.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!.......1999-07-10

This CD definately is the best of Mozart! From his famous piano concertos to the legacy of his last requiem mass,it is a MUST have for anyone who is even remotely interested in classical must haves!

4 out of 5 stars Many worthy versions, at a good price.......2003-07-15

There are arguments aplenty about whether a listener can really appreciate an opera when its "Greatest Hits" are extracted. That argument applies in spades on a disc such as this, which goes for the big, big guns from some of the most delightful vocal music ever composed.

Nevertheless, there are many fine singers in here. This is no second-string collection of unknowns from Eastern Europe, though one of my favorite Mozart interpreters, Thomas Allen, is missing. And some of the versions included are relatively weak. But as a very reasonably priced introduction to Mozart's vocal music, this is quite listenable. Good tunes, good playing, usually fine singing, and a logical sequence makes this a tasty intro at a tasty price.

5 out of 5 stars Introducing The Complete Mozart Edition.......2001-11-23

This is a wonderful piece of music and I enjoy listening to it very much while working. The compilation is superb and I play it over and over again. My predicament now is that it was stolen with my notebook computer three months ago and have been looking forward to replacing it. I have tried most record stores but to no avail. If there is anyone out that can help me to locate one, I shall be very grateful.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Recording of the C-Minor Mass.......2006-04-23

Sir Colin Davis (I hope he's as good a person as he is a conductor)
does a great job on this recording... the 'Qui tollis' from the Gloria
of the C-Minor Mass in particular is conducted in a way that penetrates
the heart (the listener can hear the harmonic progressions unfold in
a slow and weighty manner that is not hindered by baroque instrumentation...
i.e... I prefer it without baroque instrumentation because I think Mozart's Choral
Works are better romantisized then baroquesized) ... I hope that makes some kind
of sense. My only complaint on this recording is the tenor isn't loud enough in
the overall balance with the other two soloists.. but hey... it's an old recording (I think
it dates back to either the late 60s or early 70s so I'll give Phillips a break... This CD is definetely worth your money if you're looking for an introduction to Mozart's Choral Works.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite so far........2004-11-15

I had hoped to see the reviews of others with regard to this performance of the requiem. I had this title on 8-track, cassette tape, LP and finally on CD. I've heard other performances of this work and didn't really care for many aspects of these recordings. I worked in a CD specialty store that had a huge selection of Classical and the ability to sample all of our inventory. Something about these newer, often digitally superior sounding recordings always seems off to me, phrasing, soloists, choir, sound, tempo or something. I like the Davis best. I've been looking for the opinions of others with regard to other works and hoped to see others here of this one to gauge my perceptions of this recording by. Guess I'll have to start the ball rolling by being first to offer my opinion. Only thing that detracts would be the age of the recording leaving it with dated sound, well made up for by the great performance though.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2002-10-19

At this price, this set is a steal. You get two discs packed with amazing music-immortal music. For those of you who have seen "Amadeus" you will recognize some of the music quickly. My favorite is the "Coronation Mass in C" K317 (which I performed in Carnegie Hall in May 1992) and the famous "Requiem". It is mindblowing to think that so much organizational skill could be wrapped up in one single mind. Mozart was a truly amazing individual. This is a good set for the person who is not obsessed with classical music, yet wants to have some of the best of it at a bargain price.

    Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice to Sample Composers and Musicians.......2004-11-26

World class musicians performing masterpieces. So many sampler CDs offer mediocre performers, but the musicians here are the cream of the crop. The choice of composers is also inspired. This is a great way to test the waters on choral music and find favorites without having to break the bank. One of my all time favorite CDs.

5 out of 5 stars THE outstanding version.......2006-03-06

Although I'm not Colin Davis's biggest fan, after listening to many highly acclaimed versions (from the likes of Marriner, Karajan, Hickox, Gardiner, Bernstein, Schreier and Davis in his RCA remake), this one comes to my mind as the most perfect. Balancing the extremes of Bernstein's slow grandeur with Hickox's (or Weil's) clean finesse, while closing in on the interpretive distance of Gardiner's or even Marriner's versions, this recording by Davis is unmatchably warm and beautifully moving. Schreier's is nicely phrased with good recording, but I seem to miss the spiritual quality of the music, and find myself only listening to the singers and musicians perform. This recording is for me the definitive version.

5 out of 5 stars TO PRAISE DAVIS NOT TO BURY HIM .......2005-10-06

This disc has been on my cd-rack for a couple of years now. I happened to see some unfavourable comment on it, which surprised me as I had thought it rather good, but it deterred me from offering an opinion until I had something to compare it with other than my recollections of other performances. I have just obtained a recording by Giulini, partly to mark that great man's passing and partly to attend to this unfinished business. Giulini's account has few if any critics, but in the last analysis Davis is even better, I am now emboldened to say.

I suppose it is mainly a matter of the recording. This is perhaps surprising, as Davis's dates from as far back as 1967, Giulini's from 11 years later. There's not a lot in it so far as the orchestral sound goes, the difference is in the recording of the voices, particularly the chorus. I have no idea what remastering may have been done since 1967, but the clarity of the words on this disc is nearly startling - they are as clear as on some of the most recent sets of Handel himself, surely the ultimate master of vocal writing. As usual with the Penguin Classics series, under whose aegis this disc is issued in England, the texts are not provided, but you would hardly need them here unless you also need a translation. Another point that struck me forcibly was that both maestros have a very similar idea of the proper tempi in this work. One is a little faster in this movement and not quite so fast as the other in the next, but the divergence is not great anywhere, and in a work lasting the best part of an hour the overall difference is only 40 seconds. These tempi are my own idea of admirably judged, and if that makes them both slower than the general run of performances, as I have seen suggested, then it may be the general run that needs a little rethinking.

However I believe that the recorded quality partly highlights some aspects where Davis outdoes even Giulini in the actual performance. To my ears, there is a definite sense of greater majesty at the start of the Sanctus here, and I'm in no doubt at all that Davis achieves more drama and power when he leads off the Dies irae - this is really quite exceptionally effective. Indeed I'd say that there is not a weak spot from start to finish. That sublime start makes its effect as it should, Davis puts up a very good show in passing off the appalling Tuba mirum section (which is not by Mozart and threatens to let down the entire masterpiece) with a semblance of dignity, the soloists are flawless so far as I noticed, the chorus are well served by the recording and admirable in their own right, and I have no fault to find with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

In the Penguin Classics series under which this disc is issued in England the accompanying essay is by D M Thomas. As normal with other examples of this series that I own, it is an essay by a distinguished author, suggested by but not specifically relating to the music. Thomas writes simply, candidly and movingly about the death of his wife from cancer, how he returned from a visit to her sick-bed and played a recording of Mozart's Requiem, and the thoughts and reflections that it evoked in him. As is also standard practice in this series, the words are not provided. There is nonetheless a short note on the music itself, as usual stopping short of stating clearly which parts of the work are, or are believed to be, from the hand of Mozart's pupil Suessmayr after the master's own death.

It may be that the comment I saw shortly after obtaining this record was not typical, and it's certainly the case that what I have seen since is much more favourable in tone. As far as I'm concerned this is an admirable set of a work whose greatness is of a unique kind, and whether or not I was guided mainly by parsimony in my original choice I did not go wrong, and neither will you if you choose it.

    5 out of 5 stars Scarey!.......2002-03-14

This is a frighteningly beautiful recording! The sound quality is superb, as is the orchestration and soloists. It is simply one of the finest classical recordings in my collection. I would recommend anyone who likes depth, drama, beauty and emotion in their music to buy this recording.
    Scarily fantastic!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2000-03-09

3 1/2 star recording. Even though overall it is a fairly well performed piece, it does not seem to capture 'the atmosphere' that is lacking - it sounds more like they're just performing in the piece rather than engrossing themselves IN the piece - moving along with it. Some sections are noticeably deficient in the quality of the performance but apart from that is is not that bad - probably JUST about worth the price it's selling at right now. The small details does need work on still - The quality of the recording is Very Good but not stunning. And I comment after having listened to more than 12 versions of the performance of Mozart's Requiem, including the ones completed by Sussmayer, Maunder etc.

    5 out of 5 stars Enduring classic.......2000-01-20

This is one of the most stunning pieces of music I have ever listened to. Whenever I play this piece I drift inside, its very power reaches deep into my soul. Just when you think it can take your emotions no further it keeps on lifting them higher and higher till you are left emotionally strung out.

If ever you think that life has no depth, no meaning just listen to this, with the lights off, whilst looking at the moonlit sky and everything changes.

This has to be the best piece of classic music I have heard.
