On Music of Giuliani, David Russell, one of the great guitarists of the late 20th century, plays a selection of solo works by one of the great guitarists of the early 19th century. Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) was deeply involved in many aspects of music throughout his life. He played cello in the premiere of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, gave lessons to Napoleon's wife, and popularized a method of guitar notation that is still used today. But he is remembered today for his compositions for guitar. Russell plays five of Giuliani's solo pieces with his usual blend of intelligence and musicality. He never lets his formidable technique overpower the music. On Rossiniana No. 1, part of a fantasy based on arias from Rossini's operas, Russell plays with a lyricism that is deeply emotional without being histrionic. Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

I'm a thoughtful and introspective person with a diverse background. Of all the old countries, Spain's diverse background appealed to me. This music reflects that appeal.

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

Bravo!.......2000-07-22

I heard this album for the first time at a restuarant in Florence during my trip to Italy. I was surprised it was from the US beacause it has captured the very soul of Italy. After 7 years it has remained my favorite of all Puccini cds I own. I especially like the fact that it is instumental and can be played for many occassions. It never fails to stir the wanderlust for a trip back to Italy! A must for every romantic!

Outstanding compilation of the Italian classics,.......1999-05-01

I have been a music lover for years. This CD introduced some Italian music to me that I was not familiar with. I listen to this music very often...it is almost theraputic in effect. I have never heard more beautiful music together on one CD. You won't regret getting this one!

The very best.......2007-01-11

I have a large collection of classical guitar recordings. Quite simply, "Together Again" is the finest,best recordings of its genre ever made. It features arrangements that had never been before heard and that a big plus, for the normal repertoire for guitar is fairly small and we soon tire of hearng the same pieces again and again. The virtuosity of both Williams and Bream is unqustionalble. Bream sounds a bit steely at times. whereas Williams is soft. Together, they produce a magnificent sound.

The two foremost virtuosos of our time have come together once again to produce this sublime album.

What John Williams lacks in lyricism is easily compensated for by Bream and the result is outstanding.

Their chemistry is so amazing and the pieces come to life in such a cohesive way that I sometimes think it is one person with 10 fingers on each hand playing the pieces.

Not every piece is easily accessible, so give it time.

Highly recommended.

An excellent CD for anyone who loves the classical guitar.......2000-06-12

This CD is a must have for all lovers of the classical guitar. As is the case of the first album, aptly named "Together", the modern masters of the classical guitar, Bream & Williams, join forces again in order to achieve some spectacular results.

The main problem of playing a classical guitar is the genuine lack of material, apart from those (relatively few) pieces which were originally written for the guitar. Furthermore, being a fairly limited instrument, the guitar limits severely the possibilities of adapting various classical pieces which were not written originally for the guitar. Thus, Bream & Williams, set out on a mission - to achieve what is not possible on one guitar, by playing a duet of classical guitars. Hence, almost all the compositions here are adaptations, but this is by no means a bad thing - the arrangements very cleverly hides the limits of the instruments, while emphasizing it's intimate and warm nature.

Two of the most notable of these adaptations are "Evocacion", from Albeniz "Suite Iberia" and "Bajo la palmera" from "Cantos de Espana", both of which were written for piano. It is well worth mentioning that many of Albeniz compositions were based on traditional spanish tunes, played originally on guitars. Thus, by playing these truly great pieces on classical guitars, Bream & Williams are restoring some of the magic which allured Albeniz to these tunes in the first place. One might also feel these tunes sound actually more natural played on two guitars rather than on a piano.

Other interesting adaptations are the three pieces by Debussy, which are very melodic and are very suitable to be played on guitars.

Powerful.......2007-07-06

(This should be one of the first composers you've ever heard of if you've ever played the classical guitar). This recording is beyond remarkable. The tone and virtuosity is the best you will ever hear along with Russell's other recordings, as well. And David Russell's guitar sound is terrific, intonation is perfect and it projects extremely well. He is very sensitive with this music. Giuliani was a definite genius in his own right although most of his compositions are not as famous as some other guitar composers. His style was somewhat like Sor, pretty straight forward and his progressions never really straight out of key just like most 19th century composers. Giuliani was a virtuoso guitarist and these are virtuoso compositions. Nothing on this recording is harsh and Russell pays attention to the smallest details. The arpeggios are the smoothest you will ever here. A must CD for any guitar collection.

The best composer I'd never heard of........2007-03-22

Giuliani's music is original and fresh, despite the fact that it comes from the Classical Era of music. As a guitar virtuoso, Giuliani knew how to take full advandtage of the strengths of the guitar. David Russell's performance is excellent.

Some of Giuliani's most ambitious pieces made easy.......2006-07-15

Don't let my title confuse you. Giuliani didn't write terribly ambitious pieces--if you're looking from the perspective of major composers. From the perspective of an instrument that in his time was not normally a concert instrument, these 5 works are about as daring as music had ever been for the 6-string instrument. Many music lovers have assumed that Giuliani's music is supposed to be simple and/or boring, and so assume that the few represented larger pieces--"Grand Overture" and the concertos--are the only music Giuliani wrote other than tiny exercises.

If you've ever been to a guitarist's concert who played Giuliani, you probably have heard the overture, the first piece of this disc. That's not a complaint, either; it is one of the first truly virtuoso pieces for guitar from the classical era. Russell gives us a perfect interpretation here, as usual.

The highlight here is the two Rossinianas on the disc. Their lyricism is unique among Giuliani's works, being more complicated and more impassioned than most. Some guitar lovers are enthusiastic about any Giuliani music simply because it is some of the very little music that resembles the classical viennese style; These Rossinianas do not require any die-hard fans to defend them, their charm should appeal to any Mozart lover who can so much as tolerate guitar. The op. 150 is also very good, and the somewhat well-known op. 15 is given a particularly lovely slow movement here.

(Giuliani, like many in his time, wrote many sets of variations, none of which appear here--an important choice by Russell because it shows Giuliani's control of other forms. To sample some of these, try the variations disc on Naxos.)

What Russell really achieves here is not so much exploring unknown ground (much of Giuliani remains unrecorded, including works for guitar and other instruments, and songs), but providing the most convincing account of Giuliani's importance to date. It is well known that Giuliani had a relationship with both Beethoven and Rossini, and that he interacted with a number of other important musicians. It seems obvious that Giuliani's accomplishments are minor in comparison to Beethoven's, which I do not dispute. However, Russell's disc shows that this music is more than parlor exercises; it's real concert, virtuoso music that deserves our attention.

I do not lament that Giuliani was not prolific in writing for other instruments; we have plenty of other composers from his era. It must have taken everything in him to figure out how to make the classical style work on guitar (If anything I hope for more recordings of his works for guitar and other instruments). At least it is the closest answer we'll get to the question "What would it have sounded like if the great masters Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven wrote for the guitar?"

Very fine collection of special works........2006-03-04

In spite of the several references to Mozart (some of us get tired of him), I found this collection to be unique, innovative and very well performed. I find myself playing it over and over with growing enjoyment.

Truly UNIQUE Classical Guitar.......2001-12-14

I first heard the Guitar Concerti Nos. 1 & 2 on an old cassette tape from the Musical Heritage Society. This compilation from Philips Classics presents not only these but the Concerto No. 3 as well.

Additionally, there are several other Giuliani works for Guitar & Orchestra, solo Guitar pieces, and the "Variazioni Concertanti", a duet with Celedonio Romero.

These compositions are rarely performed or recorded. Giuliani's works are UNIQUE among the genre of Classical Guitar composition... reflecting as they do, that transitional period between the "Classic" and the "Romantic".

Any devotee of Classical Guitar music who is not aware of Giuliani's work, is truly missing something!!!

I'm not an expert, just a fan of classical music

A great classical guitar CD set.......2000-05-06

I am a fan of guitar music, and tried out this 2 CD set after hearing it on radio. The music is very good and the guitar is accompanied by a complete orchestra (none other than the immortal Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields).

But to be sure, this is classical guitar, and not folk guitar music. I enjoyed this CD very much, but it is not like Spanish guitar or the works of John Williams (the guitar player, not the movie composer).

However, if you are a fan of the guitar, as I am, it will be long before you tire of this CD.

Mozart never composed for the guitar, but. . . ........2000-03-11

Giuliani sure must have studied Mozart because, if you like Mozart(and who doesn't), you will like Giuliani. These CDs are a good bargain and a pleasant introduction to the music of Mauro Giuliani. The recording is relatively old(1975-1978 ADD) but the performances are fine(Pepe Romero in my mind is the best in the world today) and so is the sound.

Each note is a jewel that he performs with such life that you feel your heart beating to his rhythm. His left hand is amazingly clean but the stregnth and dynamics of his right hand could perform CPR without placing his hand on you. Gracias Dios para Celedonio haciendo Pepe !

I love this album but then again I love almost everything from the Romeros. I can't wait to see Corazon Espanol up on Amazon though. The sound quality is amazing. I got a copy at one of Pepe's performances and fell in love. I want to send get more of them to send as gifts for my friends and family.

Not so good for the car.......2007-03-17

While on the highway when only the guitar is playing I have to turn up the volume to hear the music. Then suddenly the entire orchestra joins in and the windows rattle from the blast of sound. I could not find a volume level that worked for this disk. The music was lovely but the sound engineering was disappointing.

The Music Evokes Feelings of Joy and Comfort.......2007-01-02

Listening to this album gives me the feeling of being three years old and starting to fall asleep after dinner and my father picking me up and carrying me to bed. I cannot describe how his music envelopes me-- I do not know why but every time I hear it I start to tear up. On this CD he is backed by an orchestra and hearing him play and them back him so perfectly is a delight to the ears. I play this CD for everything-- but I like it when I am lying down after a workout with candles lit and I can just close my eyes and melt into the music. I am not a music person-- I know very little and only know what I like but cannot explain it, but this CD is very, very wonderful. If you like guitar music of the classic genre, you will love this CD.

Beautiful, wanton butchery.......2001-07-11

The sound of these instruments in duo is exquisite. The performances here are stunning. Itzhak's violin sings in the hands of its master. Mr. Williams' mastery of the guitar is no less great in its power to move. It's not what is performed, but what isn't, that caused this recording by venerable masters to ruffle my feathers. All but one of the variations where the guitar assumes a lead role are edited out of the second movement of Giuliani's op. 25, perhaps Giuliani's finest chamber work. What Giuliani intended as an interesting dialog between instrumental peers has been reduced to Guitar as dog in service to master Violin with the toss of only one bone for its efforts. Simply wrong.

A Sublime Serenade.......2000-07-25

The DUOS CD by Perlman & Williams provides the most sublime music this side of Mozart. Their presentation of the Paganini Sonata Concertata in A is particularly "otherworldly"

Superlatives are inadequate for describing this ineffable listening experience!

I first heard John Williams interpreting Paganini about thirty-five years ago and was excited to learn that he had teamed with Itzhak Perlman in this marvelous production. Strangely, I find myself as attracted to their collaboration with Mauro Giuliani as with Paganini.

Occasionally you find the rare classical piece, such as Corelli's La Folia, that can rapture you into a remote dimension of complete peace and unanimity. This entire album is of that genre. It would be insipid to attempt to explain the effects of this music in terms of tonality, virtuosity, etc.--sometimes when technique is perfect, the magic is missing. Call it magic, soul, genius, whatever--this is it.

Williams does some things with the Sonata in A Major that must be heard to be believed and Perlman's sweet song is the perfect compliment.

Today's guitar repertoire thrives on transcriptions, and this program makes for fascinating comparison for that very reason. The Giuliani is real guitar music. Williams plays it superbly, of course, and the composer's inspiration in this work is high on charm, with the last two movements consisting of elegantly stylized dances. Schubert's sonata, however, here arranged for guitar and string orchestra, is another matter entirely. The problem is that the music makes no sense at all with a guitar as soloist. The instrument has none of the sustaining qualities of a viola or cello (instruments that take the part of the obsolete arpeggione in modern performances). And while lots of guitar music has been transcribed from piano originals, pitting a guitar version of the original piano part against a full string orchestra completely reverses Schubert's balance of tone, making hash of the musical argument. Don't get me wrong--it's not unpleasant in any way, and it is very well played. Fans of Williams who don't know Schubert's original might not care or notice anything wrong, and so it is to them that this disc can be most strongly recommended. --David Hurwitz

This is the kind of CD that transcends Classical Music and enters the mainstream as an example of what Classical Guitar can be. You don't have to be a Classical Music aficionado or a classical guitar buff to really appreciate this CD. It is a perfect example of the beauty and universal appeal of the classical guitar.

Terrific music, superbly performed.......2004-04-11

The Arpeggione Sonata of Schubert sounds terrific in this performance by John Williams and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. We were privileged to hear the piece performed live by these performers in Penrith [outer Sydney suburb] around the time that the CD was recorded.

While "it's never the same unless you're there at the game" as football fans know, the recording is as good as a recording can be.

Highly recommended.

Living Legend.......1999-05-05

Williams is a living legend. Critics claim he lacks emotion but cannot dispute his flawless, superhuman technique. I only wish he would stop using that Smallman guitar for his all his recordings/performances. He does use a Gaetano Guadagnini from 1814 on this one for the Giuliani Concerto which sounds suprisingly good. John Williams is doing a tremendous amount for making guitar recordings accessible to non guitarists and for lending credibility to the guitar as a serious, magical and enchanting instrument. Bravo! Mr. Williams.
