I think this can only be "Dukie Flyswatter" & "Gabby". Saw them at Fenders in Long Beach,Ca. with 45 Grave, Dinah Cancer & Don Bolles.
Awsome Hollywood Garage Sound.......2004-08-10
A great band from the late 80's/early 90's. Often overlooked and sometimes imitated. Picture Alice Cooper with a much better band and you get the idea. The album was produced by Ron Champaigne who produced Alice in Chains and worked with Janes Addiction as well. Too bad they couldnt do more.

Product Description
"The War That Plagues The Lands is an incredible concept album that ranks right up there with some of the best bands in the genre... The guitars are brought forward much more on this disc and the keyboards, while still a vital part, are pushed back in the mix allowing for a much more extreme sound. Vocally, Shamgar has improved greatly with some horrifying blackish shrieks. It seems like the biggest improvement is that he's upped the aggression factor in his vocals. Also present are some occasional death growls, eerie chanting and some beautifully haunting female vocals. All of the different vocals are placed perfectly in every instance and never sound forced. Musically, the band never settles for one sound as the songs range from blistering, to mid-paced, to slow and somber; all fitting nicely and creating an extremely dark atmosphere with a very cohesive feel. My favorite tunes on this CD are "A Dragon's Children", "And Thus It Burns" and "Of Slumber and Death". But really, there is not a downer on the whole album. If all this wasn't enough, the production, packaging and artwork are top notch. When classic black metal releases are mentioned in the future, this disc will stand tall right alongside masterpieces like Horde's Hellig Usvart and Antestor's The Return of the Black Death." -The Whipping Post
Customer Reviews:
My favorite album by my favorite band.......2005-12-18
Simply put I love this album. This band is heavy, powerful and extreme black metal. Unfortunately they don't get the respect they deserve in the black metal community for one reason...they are Christians. Speaking as a fan of Emperor and Dissection this is head and shoulders above them all. When I got out of the black metal scene and wanted to find Christian alternatives, Slechtvalk was one of the first I found. I realized I had found a band that was the equal (and superior) of Emperor. This is a must-have for any black metal collection.
Extreme Excellent Black Metal.......2005-10-26
It's sad that because the lyrics are positive this band may not get much notice. When it comes to black metal this band is awesome. Not really breaking new ground but excelling in the genre none the less. I don't always agree with the "professional" reviews Amazon has, but this reviewer nailed it. If you like extreme metal at all this band deserves a listen.

Cabinet.......2007-01-21
I had heard alot of really great things about this cd, and it is pretty insane. "Swarm Of The Formless" is probably one of my favorite death metal songs. The drummer is clearly the focal point of this group, and does an amazing job at coming up with interesting parts to complement the time changes and different riffs. The main problem with this CD is that I can't sit through the whole thing. A lot of the songs start to blur together, with only a few songs having memorable parts. However, the style of the band is quirky and interesting enough to make this much more palatable than it would be for most other bands. Highly recommended for fans of tech-death.
technical death with spice!.......2007-01-15
you really won't find too many albums with this level of musicianship or
hooks.just chocked full of brutality and weighty numbers that make you listen over and over just to capture all of the nuances. brilliant! i just wish amazon had their newest "Noctambulant".

(**Updated 11/19/06**)
Wow. Just wow. I have really been into this album for the past few months. Spawn of Possession is a band like no other. With the infusion of catchy technical riffs and solos in their brutal death metal music, there's no reason why not to check out this band. This album and their latest, "Noctambulant" (which isn't available on amazon.com), are amazing works of art. Buy this now. If you love death metal, no matter what form it is, you need this. No doubt one of the greatest Unique Leader records releases, along with Gorgasm's "Masticate To Dominate", Pillory's "No Lifeguard at the Gene Pool" and Decrepit Birth's "...And Time Begins".
Hits the spot.......2005-09-25
That is, if you have a late night craving for some ultra technical/uber brutal death metal that sounds like the unholy child of Suffocation and Gorguts. And all this from a group of Swedes?! I thought they were only concerned with making melodic death metal and black metal...haha...proved me wrong. What a satisfyingly tasty death metal cd.Mmmmm.
A technical Monster!!!!.......2005-03-03
Amazing! That's not good enough. Phenominal!!! Nope, words can't discribe this. I could listen to this album all day and it never get old. I'm not disappointed for a second. The band unleash themselves with a new track 'Swarm of the formless'. This track shows that they hold on to their own style and still manage to develop themselves. The riffs are busy as ever yet good to follow. All instruments fall into place and you can hear the musicians again have grown in their musical skills. The whole idea of the band was to create brutal and sick music that went beyond all that had been done before in death metal history! A must have!

Possession.......2003-04-21
The score to this movie is as hauntingly beautiful and memorable as the movie itself. Great for a relaxing pick me up or a romantic evening. It reminds me of the movie soundtracks Emma and Sense and Sensibility. The reason I rated this a three, however, is because, as lovely as the music is, it struck me as rather repetitive. All I suggest is that you listen to the sample music before you buy it to make sure it is to your taste.
Hauntingly soft and moving.......2003-01-17
Beautifully orchestrated! Loved the recurring, poetic theme throughout the music. Very soothing, relaxing and thought provoking.
I particularly liked the tracks, "The British Museum", "Maud and Roland", "Renewed Correspondence", "Discovering the Letters", and "Poignant Thoughts".
You'll find yourself in Possession...........2002-09-29
...of a wonderful score if you take the plunge and decide to buy "Possession." This is a score that is lush with haunting poetry, the perfect backdrop to the poetry of the two pairs of lovers in the film. It beautifully captures both the mutual passion of the Victorians' poetry romance and the promise of awakening love taking possession of the modern-day academics.
The love theme echoes the sea where Ash and Cristabel both consumated, then canned their affair, and the ebb and flow of Maud and Roland as they retrace the Victorians' footsteps and try to discover exactly what they want their own relationship to be.
"On the other side of attraction lies repulsion," Roland says to Maud, echoes of which are contained in the music of Blanche's Suicide and Exile in Brittany, where we discover the consequences of the Ash/Cristabel affair, the echoes of the pain that passion can sometimes bring.
Gabriel Yared has created a moving score that will touch your soul, and make you crave some possession of your own.
The music that lasts with you long after the movie ends............2002-09-24
Passionate romance. Reflective beauty. Mysterious longing. This is orchestral music at its best.

Could have been much better, drummer out!.......2004-08-06
I bought this item mainly because of Tim Hodgkinson's appearance on it, having been a listener to his works and appearances on recordings for some 22 years I was somewhat disappointed on this album and I understand why noone of his works with God never has been listed on his closely associated ReR label. The disappointment is not with Tim's contributions to God however but on some of the other band members, especially so the drummer, this recording is from the early 90's but still have some of that horrible poor 80's drumming on it, both in sound and in style, noise music such as this don't fit together with laibachesque drummings and rhytm sections, on top of this you will also find some "funky" kind of bassplaying! The drums and the bass then most often steal away the great guitars, noises and Tim's saxes, so it makes but a poor result. Kinda sad. If the drummer could have been replaced with someone like Chris Cutler it might have been much better, still with these kind of interesting noises made here, there would be no drummer needed at all! Same goes for the bass, "funky" basslines to noises and experimental improvisations doesn't fit together, at best it will sound like a cheap copy of the 80's Massacre. Still this album is worth 3 stars, as said because of the good and interesting noises. Those of you that buy this album because of Tim Hodgkinson featuring have to be hard core fans only.
Mind Wretchingly GOoD.......2001-05-26
A buddy traded me this CD for a Tom Waits CD several years ago when it was first released. I've had it ever since. I find it incredibly rough, but at the same time palatable.
Zorn's saxes really spice the album.
Trace-inducing music that does make you catatonic; rather like an amphetimine rushed aware state.
Possessed.......2000-03-22
Strangulating...overwhelming...pure...noise guitars, tribal drums, frantic saxophones, screaming voices. This is pure voodoo. Featuring John Zorn, Kevin Martin (Techno Animal), Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Techno Animal,...) and lots of others and than you should know enough. Heavily underestimated album. The next album (Anatomy of Addiction) is even better....buy it or steal it and spread the word
a summary of experimental music.......1998-11-01
"possesion" is really an album which have spirit in it. Coming from a hard-core background, it takes the free jazz motives and combine them with psychedelic murmurs. A fascinating album which can be spiritual, experimental, dark, meditative and narrative.

Customer Reviews:
Dr. Afshar, a master!.......2002-12-30
Lily Afshar already has two wonderful cd's out: One is made completely of a work by Castelnuevo Tedesco, and the other has the big classical guitar hits such as "Asturias" "Koyunbaba" and many more. The difference between her latest album and the previous two is that it is made mostly of brand new premieres and contemporary works. The Scherzo, Omar's Fancy, Broken Slurs were written for Dr. Afshar. The Scherzo, Slurs, and MKG Variations are all world premieres. While having brand new, never-before heard literature on this album, the great thing about it is that it still has great classics by Joaquin Rodrigo, Barrios and Brouwer. The Afro-Cuban Lullaby, by Brouwer, has an unusual, but wonderful addition, a beautiful virtuosic scale. This album truly is a wonderful collection of music which should be present in every person's collection.
American Record Guide, 2002.......2002-07-02
"Lily Afshar - a former writer for this magazine - plays beautifully on this vibrant and adventurous recording made up mostly of contemporary works. Her tone is sonorous, her technique solid, and each of her interpretations of these widely varying works is richly characterized. The recording quality is superb - I have heard quite a few recordings recently with a disturbing hiss. The sound on this one is pristine, projecting all of the details of Afshar's playing without distracting background noise.
I will not attempt to comment on all of these pieces, but I will discuss the less familiar ones. Four were written for Afshar: Salvador Broton's Scherzo, Dusan Bogdanovic's Omar's Fancy, Barbara Kolb's Broken Slurs, and Kamran Ince's MKG Variations. Broton's Scherzo is a dynamic opener for the program, full of fantasy, jagged lines, and ingenious guitar writing. Omar's Fancy is typical of much of Bogdanovic's music, with its ambient stasis and harmonies reminiscent of Eastern Europe. Also on the program is his more substantial Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue for the Golden Flower, a work that explores the same exotic sound world at greater length and with more technical extroversion.
Barbara Kolb's 3 Lullabies have always been among my favorite pieces for the guitar from the latter part of the last century (they were written for David Starobin in 1980). Her music is sophisticated and enchanting, and the humming in the third lullaby is always wonderfully haunting. The humming part is usually performed by a make voice, but Afshar dies it herself here, using an eerily distant, flat tone. Kolb's Broken Slurs, the piece dedicated to Afshar, follows the third lullaby without pause, its two very brief parts seeming to function as a continuation of the earlier work. Kamren Ince's MKG Variations, the final work is dedicated to this guitarist, derives much of its effect from stark contrasts; atmospheric hovering is interrupted by angular outbursts, spare textures giving way to full-voiced harmonies.
The effect of the entire program is very satisfying. Afshar has clearly thought carefully about the order of the pieces to make the most effective sequence of moods and contrasts. This is a fine release from an accomplished performer."
Rings
Possession!.......2002-02-22
Ms. Lily Afshar's new CD titled "Possession" is a wonderful mix of the
classical guitar repetoire as it stands today. It has a few well known
pieces (e.g. Afro-Cuban Lullaby -Brouwer, Invocation and Dance-Rodrigo),
some lesser played works by well-known composers and pieces explicity
written for Afshar. In the liner notes Lily says it is meant to capture
a snapshot of a single instant of the guitar repetoire. It's a great CD.
She chose 8 different composers (including Barrios who although not
modern, is finally getting play time). She plays three different pieces
by Brouwer including a beautiful, melancholy rendition of "Un Dia De
Noviembre".
Afshar's playing reflects the CD title. She plays both as if she owns
the pieces and is owned by them. For the pieces that are familiar, she
plays them like no one else! Her playing is articulate and every phrase
beautifully crafted. It has all the positive qualities of live
performance. The playing is so heartfelt that you can almost feel her
breathing.
There is lot's of new music on this CD too that on first listening
sounded interesting, and on second and third listenings sounds
fascinating. The piece "Omar's Fancy" by Bogdanovic instantly brings to
mind Persia. It "feels" Persian even without the title. The composers
that have written new music for her (Brotons, Bogdanovic, Kolb and Ince)
have done a fantastic job, and it's great to see and hear the repetoire
expanding!

Customer Reviews:
As a real fan, of course, you don't need this review, right?.......2004-11-01
Although I am relatively new to Sarah McLachlan's music and am unfit to judge her body of work, I must disagree with the last posted review (see below). Buy this CD for the alternate mix of Fear, not for rehashes of Sarah's pop gem, Possession. In track order,
Possession I, as noted by more knowledgeable fans, is the organ-less Canadian video version, very nicely rocked-up.
Possession II is probably the reason most fans consider this purchase. I, too, bought this CD to hear this very John Fryer mix, which disappointed me very much. This mix does vary interesting combinations of foreground and background vocals and, yes, there is one delivery of the chorus with the foreground vocals deleted, leaving nearly a cappella (heavy reverb) Sarah's falsetto background vocals, "And I would be the one to hold you down, Kiss you so hard, I'll take your breath away," which works very well. However, my opinion of this mix was skewered within the first 10 seconds. John Fryer brings to the forefront the background guitar (not the familiar swell of the original) and with it an annoying, unoriginal, and MONOtonous percussion track. There's a lengthy segment with only the percussion and "close your eyes" whispered into alternating ears. Ugh. It brings to my mind Delerium gone BAD. Don't get me wrong, I love Delerium (the Enigma of the late 90s), the song Silence, and many rehashes of familiar songs, e.g. Enjoy the Silence by Failure, but this track is crap. If you're a new Sarah McLachlan fan who seeks a rocked-out version of Possession, buy a copy of Mirrorball, I say.
Not to worry, this wasn't the worst 10 bucks I ever spent:
Jane's cello mix of Fear is, as others have said, comparatively a bit boring. Sarah sings in a lower key here and adds a lot more cello (kidding) than in the FTE album version. Almost the only lyric sung in a higher key is near the end, "There's nothing I'd like better than to fall." This track is somber, desperate-sounding, a departure from the original, and in my humble opinion, the standout on this disc.
You must hear track 2!.......2004-06-14
This was my 4th Sarah McLachlan purchase way back in 1993, and the third CD I'd ever purchased. It still gets played.
Possession I, while *very* similar to the album version is indeed different. The organ in the background of the album version is gone, and the guitars are mixed up a bit. This is the track they used in the Canadian video. The absence of the organ gives the song a more 'rock' sound.
Possession II, the John Fryer remix of Possesion, pushes the song much further into Rock territory, which is downright excellent. It's the hardest sounding song you'll ever hear from Sarah McLachlan and IT IS FANTASTIC!! There is a part near the end of the song where the forground vocals are deleted leaving McLachlan sonorous backgroud vocals, at the top of her register, to clearly belt out "I'll take your breath away" - this gives me chills every time I hear it.
Janes mix (the Cello mix) of Fear, is a toned-down acoustic version from FTE and is a little on the boring side when you compare the two.
I'd reccomend this single just to get Version II (the John Fryer remix) of Possession, and Version I while nearly identical to the album version, is actually exclusive to this release!
A must-have........1999-02-20
These remixes are very good. If you love "Possession" you will love Version II even more. The electronic mixing brings in refreshing options.
Sarah's haunting voice caressing an electronic bassline.......1998-11-06
Not for every fan of Sarah's, but this is a great import. If you dig Sarah at all and are into Electronica, definetly check it out.

Two lovely albums from 1974.......2003-02-23
Anne recorded great music throughout the seventies, but her mid-seventies material is sometimes overlooked - this is most unfair, as the two albums that make up this CD illustrate. Brian Ahern was Anne's producer, as he had been for some years, and these two albums contain a typical mix of covers and originals.
The first album, A love song, contains exquisite covers of Just one look (an American hit for Doris Troy but a British hit for the Hollies) and You won't see me (John Lennon once told Anne that this was the best Beatles cover he'd ever heard - I wouldn't go that far, but it is rather nice).
The album includes Another pot o' tea, written by a Canadian songwriter about his Irish grandmother, and Send a little love my way, which won a Golden Globe nomination after it was used in the movie Oklahoma crude. Kenny Loggins co-wrote two of the songs - the title track and Watching the river run. Listening to those songs, it's not difficult to figure out why he became such a great songwriter.
The second album, Highly prized possession, contains two great covers, including Dream lover (Bobby Darin) and Day tripper (Beatles) but is otherwise filled with lovely original songs. The best of these is the final track, Please don't sell Nova Scotia. It is a song about the perils of development - if you sell the land to build houses or factories, you can't get it back. Although set in Anne's home province, the message of the song is universal.
So, these are two excellent but often overlooked albums from Canada's finest singer.
U.S. Release Needed.......2001-02-27
Here's hoping the folks at Capitol/EMI will consider releasing these great two-fer domestically. LOVE SONG, first released in 1974, was Anne Murray's best album. Even the ever-cynical Robert Christgau praised her cover of "You Won't See Me" as one of the best re-recordings of a Beatles song. And, her understated, elegant rendition of Chip Taylor's "Song of a Rotten Gambler" is a classic. 1975's HIGHLY PRIZED POSSESSION isn't as strong as its predessor. This time around, the Beatles' cover, "Day Tripper," is presented as a bit of ill-conceived, blue-eyed soul. Almost all of the songs feature the tempo and themes of '70s lite rock. Two glorious exceptions: "Please Don't Sell Nova Scotia," an ode to anti-development and environmentalism; and "Uproar," a bit of country funk -- unfortunately, it represents the last town Murray got down and dirty on her recordings. Excellent production by Brian Ahern throughout. These two recordings were they last time Ahern and Murray worked together; he resurfaced a couple years later as the producer and later husband of Emmylou Harris. She, in turn, covered two of the songs on LOVE SONG -- the aforementioned "Gambler" and "Another Pot of Tea."
(Here's a hint...you may be able to find this CD cheaper at Canadian-based CD stores...)
Essential Anne Murray...anything else is slush.......2001-01-06
LOVE SONG is probably one of the best "pop" albums that's ever been released. The fact that it's not available unless you purchase an import version is a criminal oversight on the part of Capitol Records, because it's an essential key to the songcraft of the era...proving that Anne Murray was mixing genres with aplomb long before today's "eclectic" rockers made reputations on just such a skill. From the production and arrangement skills of Brian Ahern (later to refine these skills with Emmylou Harris) to the song choices (a cover of the Beatles' "You Won't See Me" that might actually cut the original, wresting away a couple more Loggins and Messina songs) to Anne's own inimitable delivery (proving that a Canadian can take on Doris Troy's "Just One Look" and sing credible r&b), this is the one you HAVE to have. In the posse of female song stylists of the country/rock/pop era, this album asserts that Anne Murray was not only one of the first, she was unquestionably the best.
Cream of the Crop.......2000-07-10
Highly Prized Possession lives up to the title. The instruments are tasteful, in a soft rock vein. Anne was soon bogged down with strings which took away her charms. Too bad Highly Prized P is only an import.
another superb collection of two of Annes early records.......1999-06-25

excellent, but this could do without Christianity-bashing.......2006-05-22
I thought melodic death wasn't about bashing Christianity, but then again when your band is fronted by George Fisher of Cannibal Corpse, what can you expect. I bought this for the musicianship only. I think this band is cool though. if you're a Cannibal Corpse fan this belongs in your collection, ditto if you are into metal PERIOD.
What!!!!??????.......2006-03-18
That editorial review up there is way off! Corpsegrinder's vocals on this sound just as brutal as they did for Cannibal Corpse's Gallery of Suicide and Wretched Spawn. The music on this has melody, but not that much that they should be compared with some of the bands I saw listed as ones people bought who bought this ... I mean, Children of Bodom and As I Lay Dying?! Paths is in no way like those bands. It's not Cannibal either, but if you loved Corpsegrinder's vocals on the two I mentioned, then you'll love this. I put this right up there with Vital Remains perfect release, Dechristianize. Don't pass this up just because some reviewer didn't get it right. This gets an easy 5 stars. Can't wait till the next one with Corpsegrinder on vocals hopefully.
Necrosoul.
Best Band ever!.......2005-10-22
If you guys haven't heard this you're probably driving around in a tractor doing 180's and wheelies! If you like pop rock then you'll love this as much as you love doing wheelies in tractors!
Good Album!!.......2005-10-13
This album is very good in my opinion. For all those who haven't heard Paths of Possession, it's some very melodic stuff, completely different than Cannibal Corpse. Kinda sounds like In Flames with a death metal voice. There are a couple songs that were on the Split CD with Dark Faith that are redone on this album. "The Butcher's Bargain" is totally ruined though, my favorite part was when Corpsegrinder's saying "I'm coming apart..." and theres is a sweet sounding squeal in the riff behind him. This squeal is barely audible and I don't think the guitarist is using the same note or guitar in the new recording. That is my only dissapointment. "A heart for a heart" is another one that was on the last album that sounds alot better. Their last song is "The Leg Flow of Death" formerly known as "The Icy Flow of Death" on the split cd. This song sounds great, much more of the guitar is heard and I think a new riff is added over the beginning. My personal favorite song on the CD is a new song called "Through The Fiery Halls" with a really badass verse riff and chorus. All in all this is an album that I would definately recommend to fans of melodic death metal and maybe even black metal fans. If you want to get the album before this one you can get it from Redstream.com, it's called "The Crypt of Madness". Dark Faith of Fort Pierce, Florida is also a great melodic band that finishes off the last six songs on the CD.
