Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

I cannot review the product which I know is great , as I was billed for it, but never received it.
Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04
With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.
The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.
Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.
For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.
Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.
Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24
Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.
I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03
All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Michael Curtiz's 1938 Technicolor swashbuckler, with Errol Flynn embodying the title character's mythic heroism and grinning charm, makes good the movies' tradition of action-driven spectacle, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold has magnified that irresistable force as well as become the template for generations of filmmakers emulating its stirring, virtuosic sweep. Like other transplanted European classicists creating the musical backdrop for Hollywood's swiftly evolving screen artistry, Korngold brought meticulous craftsmanship and a deep grounding in centuries of compelling, programmatic symphonic music. Soundtrack buffs know that Korngold, working under tight schedules, raided his own oeuvre to pluck the title hero's vivid main theme, and freely employs anachronistic Viennese waltzes, bombastic marches, and brilliantly scored, intricate orchestrations to animate this medieval legend. Anyone who's ever been thrilled by the irresistible film, or its glorious music, should care less: This is the mother lode for decades of exciting symphonic scores, still felt in John Williams's epochal Star Wars trilogy and Indiana Jones, among dozens of other indelible soundtracks. --Sam Sutherland
Customer Reviews:
Great Score For A Great Film.......2007-05-05
The Adventures of Robin Hood set the standard for action/adventure films nearly 70 years, and the score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold equals that high standard. The music so perfectly complements the scenes of the film that it's hard to imagine one without the other. Just hearing "Robin Enters The Great Hall" conjurs up the wonderful image of Errol Flynn confidently striding into the banquet at Nottingham Castle, deer draped over his shoulders and confronting Prince John and his minions. "Ambush in Sherwood" is so brilliantl, mixing the light and airy passages of Guy of Gisbourne's unsuspecting group with the frantic preparations of the Merry Men in the forest, culminating in Robin's marvelous swing across the forest. When I hear this selection, I can hear Flynn at the end..."Welcome to Sherwood my lady. What, Sir Guy? No greeting from you?"
A wonderful CD.

The greatest Robin Hood ever!.......2007-03-21
Still, after almost 25 years, this is the finest recording of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Robin Hood (1938). Produced by George Korngold (the composer's son and legendary film music recording producer) and supebly performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra under Varujan Kojian, this is a must-have recording.
The CD (itself a reissue of the original 1983 LP) contains about 2/3 of the complete original score, but this does not diminish the importance of this recording in any way. On the contrary, this recording demonstrates that a wonderful film music album does not have to contain every note of the score.
All essential score material is included and some tracks are in fact the composer's own radio/concert hall arrangements of the original film cues.
Just listen to The Archery Tournament and The Coronation Procession tracks and be stunned!
A Most Worthy Recording of a Timeless Film Score.......2006-01-08
Varese Sarabande's digital recording of the Erich
Wolfgang Korngold score for THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN
HOOD is a feat of great courage, and memorable
results. Far superior to previous attempts to
re-record these epic themes, Varujan Kojian and
the Utah Symphony Orchestra superbly capture the
heroic zeal, lyrical magic, and burning passion
which so emblazoned Korngold's music unto the
hearts of all who experienced the 1938 Errol
Flynn-Olivia deHavilland film classic.
While it is hoped that someone will issue a
digitally-remastered CD of Korngold's original
soundtrack (certainly Warner Video's restoration
of all aspects of the film suggests that this
is possible), it is no reason to belittle the
merits of the Kojian recording. It should be
remembered that this recording is of the score,
which would not have the minute -though precious-
cues which Korngold ingeniously added later. That
Kojian is able to bring out the polyharmonic
wonders of this music is no mean feat, and is
quite commendable.
If anything, this recording spurred some exceptional
recordings of epic film scores which followed this
1980s release. Certainly, composer Bruce Broughton's
1994 recording of Miklos Rozsa's chivalrous score for
IVANHOE is a marvelous accomplishment in itself, one
further noteworthy in that it aided in the eventual
issue -albeit limited- of Rozsa's original 1952
soundtrack by Rhino in 2002. Certainly, the digital
recording of Georges Auric's score for Cocteau's LA
BELLE ET LE BETE, or Philip Sainton's seafaring music
for the 1956 version of MOBY DICK represents magnificent
achievements in presenting some of the finest music
ever conceived - music which might never be heard
for its own beauty but for enterprising recordings
such as these.
Listen to this recording, and gain an appreciation

What a wasted opportunity!.......2003-11-15
Last month, I bought the DVD edition of THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, and found myself reintroduced to the finest film incarnation of the Sherwood Forest swashbuckler. So naturally, I decided to try and see if the soundtrack was available. I stumbled across this disc on Amazon, and decided to try my luck.
Well, I can honestly say this 1983 re-recording of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's legendary score is a major disappointment.
This is not a knock against the Utah Symphony Orchestra or its conductor Varujan Kojian. The quality of the performance is top-shelf (although I think Charles Gerhardt and the National Philharmonic Orchestra's rendition of the Robin/Merry Men fanfare is more appropriately bombastic). My problem is-and this is a gripe I have with ALL soundtrack albums-that Korngold's music has been severely edited and, in some instances, butchered beyond recognition. Huge chunks of music are missing from this album. The opening sequence, with Prince John's men attacking the Saxons, is absent, as is Robin's first appearance and rescue of Much. Robin's meetings with Little John and Friar Tuck are ridiculously pared down to nearly nothing. The scene where the Merry Men set and execute their trap for Sir Guy of Gisbourne in Sherwood is chopped in half, as is the music for Much's battle with the assassin Dicken and King Richard's stay in Sherwood. The coronation scene is cut off before Richard reveals himself to John. The finale where John is exiled and Robin is re-knighted is needlessly edited. The end credits music is completely absent. But the most unforgivable chopping comes with the climactic battle music. The fight in the throne room is just GONE, and the savage sword battle between Robin and Gisbourne...
...good grief, whoever decided to edit the music for this recording should be slapped. Repeatedly. With an armored glove. The music for this battle, with its ultraviolent orchestration and high-pitched xylophone percussion, is the high point of Korngold's score in the movie. For this recording, it's MUTILATED. We get the chase down the stairs, then an abrupt jump to the shadows bashing it out on the wall, then we get a grotesque, discordant, and just plain stupid bridge that was never in Korngold's score to begin with, then another bizarre jump to Robin getting backed against the wall, then ANOTHER jump to Robin freeing Marian. What the heck is this? The powers at Varese Sarabande clearly had access to Korngold's original compositions, especially with his son George producing the album. There was not one reason for them to butcher his score like this. But they did, as the end result is an album that, while nicely performed by a group of talented musicians giving it their all, is a disgrace to Korngold's work. To listen to this album, you'd never be able to understand why Korngold won an Oscar for this music.
Making this album an even bigger embarrassment is-surprise, surprise-the ROBIN HOOD DVD, which features an audio-only track in which every single bit of Korngold's music can be heard in all its glory, digitally remastered to the point where it sounds as brand-spanking new as any soundtrack album just coming off the assembly line. If the original soundtrack recording from 1938 still exists and is in pristine condition, why in blue blazes doesn't Warner Bros. release it all on a two-disc soundtrack album like they did with John Williams' SUPERMAN? After all, they released the soundtrack to James Cagney's YANKEE DOODLE DANDY just recently to coincide with the DVD release. Why don't they do the same for ROBIN HOOD and let people hear Korngold's score for what it is? Because I just have to say, it would beat the pants off this misbegotten Varese re-recording, and unlike this album, a full-blown Korngold reissue would actually be well worth the money.
An Incredible Score by the "Second Mozart" Himself.......2003-09-12
In order to understand the score to "Robin Hood," you must first venture back years earlier to Korngold's childhood in Vienna. As a boy, his talents had shown themselves quite early. At the age of five, he was a good enough pianist to perform in public (and he was mostly self-taught at that!), by six or seven, he was composing, and, most astonishingly of all, had developed a completely mature and instantly recognizable style by the age of nine, a feat unprecedented in all music history (even by Mozart!). His compositions were soon after picked up by the musical luminaries of the time, including Mahler, R. Strauss and Schnaebel among others, as well as by an unusually enthusiastic public. As a teenager, he was producing masterpiece after masterpiece, often getting praise from the critics (who had nicknamed him "the second Mozart") and audiences alike. It is ironic, therefore, that the early work that this award-winning score was primarily based on, the Sursum Corda Overture (written when the composer was 21-22), had proved actually to be his first all around public failure. It was, in fact, booed off the stage three times and considered too radical and modern. Additionally, its complex orchestration made it one of the most difficult pieces to play in the repetoire. He was derided for attempting to imitate R. Strauss' tone poems, whereupon one critic went as far as saying that Strauss wasn't even good enough to copy, and also for his complex rhythmic structure which called for a seemingly constant bombardment of meter changes. But (thank goodness!), this work may now be returned to a hopefully more savvy public in the guise of "Robin Hood," and perhaps eventually, Sursum Corda itself will be able to lay claim to its rightful place in the regular orchestral repetoire.

First (for me) and still the best........2007-06-30
I saw this movie on tv when I was a kid and it was the first vhs I ever bought -- the rousing music is as important as any character in the film, in fact, it IS a character -- Erich Wolfgang Korngold scored many movies but, for me, this is the best.
Terrific, but not everything I'd hoped for.......2006-03-22
I agree with the previous reviews that this recording beautifully reveals many wonderful details in the orchestration that I'd never heard before, particularly in the wind section. But in pursuit of that admirable goal, Stromberg begins to lose one of the score's most magical features: its unabashed romance and exhilarating brio. I can't find one place in this recording where Stromberg allows the strings to truly _glow_ the way they do throughout most of the original soundtrack. And his tempos, while never plodding, are occasionally too safe - the waltz for the Sherwood feast should feel like the raucous party we see on screen, not a polite symphonic affair. For fans of the score, this recording is an essential addition to the original soundtrack, but certainly not a replacement for it.
The First Korngold Reference Recording Of The 21st Century!.......2003-12-14
1. Make that six stars out of five! A quick comparison of this CD with analog-reference recordings BMG RCA Victor 60863-2-RG, 1972 and BMG RCA Victor 0912-2-RG, 1975 (both CDs conducted by Charles Gerhardt, performed by the National Philharmonic Orchestra, and available from Amazon.com), and DCC Compact Classics GZS-1094, 1996 (originally recorded in 1961, conducted by Lionel Newman and Kurt Graunke, performed by an uncredited Munich orchestra, and available from Amazon.com) tells all: we have had a regime change!
2. This CD is one of a quartet of releases on CD and DVD marking the 65th anniversary of the film (see reviews of the film's music on DVD-Video release Warner Home Video 65131 and DVD-Audio release Marco Polo 5.220501).
3. The score for The Adventures of Robin Hood (TAORH) won Erich Wolfgang Korngold (EWK) an Academy Award for what was his "first" swashbuckler score. He had declined to take on-screen-compositional credit for the score of CAPTAIN BLOOD, 1936, even though he wrote all but the 2-3 minutes he lifted from Liszt. A 12-minute suite Korngold distilled from his full score may have been the first film music ever performed in a concert hall (which was conducted by the composer also in 1938). Proceeding beyond the original sound track (OST), this CD contains the first recording ever made of the complete score for TAORH. It includes music that was edited out prior to the film's release (now restored in Track 19) and (in Track 6) music that never made it into the final score and, therefore, has never been heard before! The CD also presents the first modern recording in the same (or extremely close to) tempos that EWK used when he recorded the OST.
4. The restoration/orchestration of this new reference re-recording is top-of-the-line, first rate (so is the miking/mixing). Mr. Morgan's restoration and Messrs. Morgan and Stromberg's orchestration yield a score jam packed with instances of instruments brought to the fore (pick any track) and probably not so distinctly heard (or heard at all) since Korngold conducted the score. Even Little John's whistling is included (it had to be lowered an octave before any male could whistle it which means that Korngold probably used a lady whistler!). Perfectly presented percussion passages abound (again, pick any track). Interludes that under-line EWK's light-hearted sense of musical humor are copious (e.g., the Little John cues in Track 6, the Friar Tuck cues in Track 8, and the Sir Guy, High Sheriff of Nottingham, Little John, and Friar Tuck slapstick interactions cues in Track 12).
5. Mr. Stromberg's conducting is simply superb. The Moscow Symphony Orchestra has been carefully and skillfully crafted into a disciplined whole that mesmerizes the unwary (or even wary) listener to the point of near total distraction; the ensemble is also extremely well rehearsed. The latter hard work rewards us big time especially in the banquet fight and escape (Track 5), the forest attack (Track 10), the archery tournament capture (Track 14), the escape from the gallows (Track 16), and the final battle and sword fight (Track 23). Throughout, the music repeatedly refuses to, well, stay on the page! Properly presented tempos and transitions between tempos as well as back-and-forth "dueling" of tempos/themes have much to do with it.
6. The multi-authored CD booklet provides a special treat and a substantial bonus. Film historian Mr. Rudy Behlmer sets the scene with little known and fascinating background facts and anecdotes about both the score and the film. Principal Korngold biographer Mr. Brendan Carroll builds on information in his biography, and provides one of the most comprehensive and lucent (not to mention riveting) non-technical, film-score analysis written to date. Mr. Carroll has also provided scoring-session photos that have never been published before (including one with EWK on the podium and his parents sitting off to the side--wow!). Restoration guru and master orchestral arranger Mr. John Morgan describes the psychological roller coaster he experienced in his quest to fully restore the complete score for TAORH and offers a number of commentary gems including that during the OST recording, the pace of Korngold's music would often require "turning a page every two seconds!" (Korngold did not use a conductor's score, but conducted from the full orchestral score.)
6. A final observation. The primary problem with EWK's music (and, especially, his film symphonies) is that it is too darn addictive. Even when you manage to stop playing a disc and go cold turkey, the music can go on in the mind's ear for weeks. With this CD, I wager, the rehab process could jump from weeks to months. Fair warning.

A Beautiful Recording of a Beautiful Score - And Complete!.......2003-12-10
This is another in Marco Polo's series of modern recordings of classic film scores. And this is one of the REAL classics. It was written in haste by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) for the Warner Brothers release, but you'd never know that. There have been recordings of bits and pieces of the score before, but this is the very first one that contains all of its 75 minutes (an amazing amount of music for a film lasting only 102 minutes). Even more amazing is the fact that Korngold didn't think he could write the music because there is so much action in the movie--which means lots and lots of notes for underscoring--and because he didn't 'relate' to it. But he was prevailed upon and the result is, simply, quite amazing. The action music is appropriately perky (as the whistling tune when Robin meets Little John), agitated (as in the attack on Sir Guy and his men, and for Robin's arrest), dramatic (as for the music of the archery tournament). And then there is the insouciant theme song for the Merry Men which opens the score and recurs throughout the film. And on and on. From a strictly musical point of view, the score shows Korngold's utter ease at using leitmotivs for various characters, scenes and situations, and his ability to combine them contrapuntally when appropriate.
I have always loved Korngold's 1919 tone poem 'Sursum Corda' and knew that he quoted and extended much of that material in this score. He had done so at the urging of his father, the eminent Viennese music critic Julius Korngold, and indeed motives from that piece occur throughout the score. It first appears as a trumpet tune during the film's first appearance of Errol Flynn as Robin. The tune is memorable in all its guises.
Like all other Korngold scores, the musical materials are quintessentially late Romantic in both their kind and use. This means there is Romantic sweep, arching melodies, extraordinarily seamless counterpoint, lush orchestration (done here, actually, by Hugo Friedhofer to Korngold's extensive specifications), exciting action and ceremonial music, melting love music (the Love Scene between Robin and Maid Marian, with its use of shimmering vibraphone and celesta is sui generis for its time, and romantic as can be). All the things that we associate with the best of movie scores of this period are here. And this is one of Korngold's best. I well remember seeing this film as a boy and whistling the March of the Merry Men as I left the theater.
The restoration of the score from the parts of the original score still extant and from the optical track of the film itself is done by movie music expert, John Morgan. The performance by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra is led by conductor William Stromberg whose CD of music ['Death Valley Suite,' et al.] by Ferde Grofé I raved about earlier this year. Both the performance and the recording are terrific.
A word needs to be said about the CD's booklet. It is quite extensive and extremely informative. There is an account by movie historian Rudy Behlmer of how the movie came to be made and the score composed. There is a 15-page set of notes by Korngold biographer, Brendan G. Carroll, detailing in scholarly detail all manner of things about the music, including a scene-by-scene description of the movie's action and the music that accompanies it. There are two pages of black-and-white pictures of the original recording of the movie's score, conducted by Korngold himself. And there is a two-page essay by John Morgan about how the score was restored. One couldn't ask for a better production values.
I know that movie music buffs will be snapping this one up. I fully expect Amazon reviewer William F. Flanigan, Jr, to be writing another review, better informed than mine, soon.
Heartily recommended.

A Milestone Plus Cheap Fills.......2005-11-26
1. First, the proverbial good news. The music from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score for the 1941 film THE SEA WOLF (TSW) on this CD is a milestone. Kudos to the releasing label (RL) for providing us with the first modern recording of the complete score of Korngold's TSW! And the complete mini score from the film's trailer. No musical stone has been left unturned this time! The sound is flat-out superb. More kudos to the RL for employing an orchestra whose size and challenging composition matches that demanded by the fully-orchestrated score! The performance gives every indication that much rehearsal time and effort went into the final product.
2. The CD booklet is outstanding. Its author, Brendan G. Carroll, a renown Korngold authority, brings together just the right balance of film analysis and score de-construction. End of the good news.
3. The conducting on this CD is periodically undermined by the snail-like pace of the performance. There is often too little that is exciting to hear here. Retarded tempo is endemic in modern recordings of Korngold's film symphonies, and this CD clearly adds to that epidemic. Compared to the Gold Standard established by the late Charles Gerhardt in the 1970's (the reference CD recording can be found in track four on ELIZABETH AND ESSEX, BMG RCA Victor GD80185, 1973), the conducting on the current CD can be ponderous at best. Then there's the OST Platinum Standard (the reference CD recording is THE SEA WOLF, Tsuami TSU 0144, 2003). Compared to Korngold's command of the orchestra and his lightening fast baton, the current recording frequently sounds like it is on life support. The energy that Korngold imparts to his score is phenomenal. His orchestra's performance remains unsurpassed after almost 65 years!
4. This CD also includes excerpts from Korngold's score for the 1938 film THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (TAORH). Boos to the RL for going cheap with a worn out (but inexpensive) musical filler just to increase CD playing time. This is the 25th CD that contains essentially the same sort of collection of bits and pieces from TAORH! A complete and definitive recording was recently released (KORNGOLD: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, Marco Polo CD 8.225268, 2003). While the performance on the current CD is better than average, it, not unexpectedly, pales by comparison to the Marco Polo reference recording. The RL could have just released a shortened CD with only the TSW score (and, perhaps, reduced the price accordingly). Or contributed something equally rare like a concert of cues from, say, the 1955 film MAGIC FIRE.

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12
The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.
A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05
I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.
There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!
So So Compilation.......2002-01-14
My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.
Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23
I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.
The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.
Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!
Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02
Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

Customer Reviews:
Historic and Folkloric - Don't Pass Up This One!.......2002-01-28
Half of this CD contains a truncated recording from a 1938 radio
broadcast of Erich Wolfgang Korngold conducting the Warner Bros.
Studio Orchestra complete with narration by the deliciously
villainous Sir Guy of Gisbourne (aka Basil Rathbone). Much too
short, but utterly fascinating and arguably the best audio
quality of any historic Korngold recording commercially
available. A complete version of this broadcast may be forth
coming, but I wouldn't wait to see. Get this one while it's
still in print. The second half of the CD contains a much
truncated recording from a 1968 radio interview with Sir Robin of
Locksley (aka Errol Flynn), now long retired. Sad, but
fascinating. Again, snag a copy of this CD while it's still
around!

DOA - Dead On Arrival.......2002-01-28
This somniferous, undistinguished, and lightweight recording
contains about 18 minutes of cues from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's
film symphony which is the focus of this review. It often
borders on cruel and unusual punishment for the listener in
general, and is sheer torture for Korngold enthusiasts.
Nonetheless, it is a courageous undertaking for a regional
orchestra (the East of England Orchestra). If you wish to
encourage more regionals to perform and record Korngold's film
music (highly recommended!), buy this CD. If not, move on.
