Bach: The Complete Orchestral Suites
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
There is no dearth of recordings of the Bach Orchestral Suites, but this new one goes right to the top of the list of recommended performances. Pearlman and his Boston Baroque play on period instruments but there is never any stridency in the strings, none of the odd pressured quality that can creep into "historically informed" readings. The 3rd and 4th suites, the most heavily scored, are given truly rousing readings, with the trumpets and timpani making a joyful noise and the oboes and bassoon audible and very welcome in the mix---the recording is well-balanced. The first suite has prominent wind parts as well, and Pearlman weaves them in and out of the orchestral fiber effectively, as the music indicates. The tricky Suite No. 2 is often presented as a type of flute concerto, but Pearlman has the solo flute backed up by multiple strings in the grander passages and reduces them to solos when the flute has its own melodic line. And most importantly, he realizes that the movements of all the suites are dances, and so the music, in its own, French Baroque way, swings. The recording is as fine as the performances, which is to say, remarkable. --Robert Levine

Another Classic.......2007-05-06
I will not hesitate to say that every disc Boston Baroque puts out there, it should be in your cd library. As usual, Pearlman and his fellow musicians offer rich and exquisite performances of the orchestral Bach, just as they have done with Mozart and Handel. This first-rate disc may cost a little more than others, but it is well worth it.
Flesh, not marble.......2006-08-19
Whoever thinks of classical music (especially Bach) as thick and stodgy needs to have a listen to this CD. Pearlman's Bach is lively, not stately and soporific like many of the other versions I have either heard or own-- and for that reason it was a revelation.
I never realized how much of a difference the conductor makes in the way a piece is performed; clearly in Pearlman's case, he's not just some guy standing on a podium waving his arms. These performances are brimming with a life that brings out all the color and genius of Bach. Whatever your mood, I defy you to listen to these pieces without them bringing a smile to your face and a tap to your toes.
Wonderful.......2005-03-24
Martin Pearlman really does deserve to be in the ranks of the great baroque interpreters, such as Gardiner and Pinnock, and this recording is a great example why. The performances are exquisite, the period instruments shine, and the sound is wonderful. Highly recommended.
Great performance - Handelian?.......2004-12-11
Mr. VanderSande hits on a point or two that distinguish this from other period-instrument performances of the orchestral suite cycle.
Reading his review, I am prompted to put into concise words that of which this recording reminds me, now --
And that is that the Boston Baroque give a somewhat Handelian sound to Bach. While I'm not sure that would be ideal everywhere, it works quite well with the orchestral suites.
If you're starting to expand a basic Bach collection, buy this.
Nicely done and economical.......2004-10-04
Here's a recent version of all Bach's orchestral suites done by a period band on one CD. I've owned a lot of recordings of this music over the past 30 years, beginning with Pablo Casals recordings with the Marlboro Festival Orchestra way back when. The most recent was the wonderful period performances by Alte Musik Berlin. The main downside of these recordings was the performances of Suites 1-3 tended to sound the same, which made buying two CDs something of a risk.
That was resolved for a lot of people when the single CD performance led by Neville Marriner appeared in the 1970s. That recording has stood the test of time and had the one-CD market to itself...until this one came along. In this recording, Martin Pearlman leads the Boston Baroque period band in somewhat romanticized concepts of the music. The timpani bellows in these recordings in a way you don't often hear in period performance. There are also ritards at the end of symphonic statements, another trend away from PPP. And Pearlman tends to dot the rhythmic pulse in concluding moments, like he does in the Passsapied finale of the Suite No. 1 in C Minor.
I like all these affects and believe it brings a warmth and slight romance to the music that isn't often heard these days. What I like most, however, is the unhurried performance of the wonderful Suite No. 2, where flutist Chirstopher Krueger gives competition to every name performer that has done this music. This is a very different performance than I have ever heard in this wonderful music. The relaxed performance allows Bach's score to breathe, take life and wing, and float along as if gossamer mist in a slight wind.
Not every moment of this CD is this perfect but most of them are pretty darn good. Listeners looking for an economical approach to the complete Bach orchestral suite canon have this and the "ancient" Marriner versions to choose from. This one is in new millennium DDD sound, is wonderfully played, is warm and verging on a romantic approach, and can be had for $5-$8 used on Amazon.com. There's not much reason to reject it, in my opinion.

Customer Reviews:
Ultimately unrewarding Bach.......2005-09-03
I disagree with the 5 star ratings given for this disc. Performances are generally rather rushed and all the overtures truncated. Playing is acceptable though I was not inspired by the flautist in Suite 2. The trouble is ultimately this disc is neither particularly exciting nor played with real feeling ( if Baroque music can be !). Perfunctory is one word which comes to mind. Chopping great lumps off the overtures might improve the balance of the suites given most other movements are short but that does not really work either.Of course that is how 4 suites get on one disc. I played Musica Antiqua Koln's versions after and these are clearly better considered and are my personal versions of choice. Vastly superior although on 2 discs.
Glorious, Fresh and Engaging.......2005-04-05
The Bach suites for orchestra never sounded so good. The moment I got this in the mail, I plopped it into my computer at work. Even with those small speakers, let alone on my stereo at home, the sound in this set is as glorious as the performance. Whether or not you have a super audio CD player, don't hesitate: I have noth and this sounds so fine on an ordinary CD player it is worth the expense. The strings are lush, the flute silvery and crisp, yet rounded and not whistle-like, as Galway's can be. The effect is to clarify the sound almost to a dramatic extent. Pearlman is also thoughtful and talented. His period ensemble is strong and, as the other reviewer has noted, not subject to many of the infirmities that can plague ancient music recordings. It also is not mannered in the way some performances are; though there is a little latitude with tempi, some of which are a bit faster, others a little slower, it is not to the point that it is annoying or seems to have been done for its own sake. I admit, I did have a problem with the brisk tempi of portions of Suite No. 2, which seemed to overtax the flute: you can hear him take a breath and pause very briefly. My sister is a professional flautist, so growing up I became very familiar with how that sounds. It is a bit distracting. The suites are arranged on one CD, with Suite No. 4 first, then Nos. 1, 3 and 2. To those of us who may be accustomed to listening to these in a particular order, the rearrangment enhances the fresh quality of the recording. I have enjoyed the versions by Ristenpart with Maurice Andre on the trumpet and Roger Bourdin on the flute, and of Menuhin and the Bath Festival Orchestra (which comes with an excellent rendering of the Musical Offering), but with the foregoing reservations, this is my favorite: engaging and fresh Bach. I recommend it highly.
This is an incredible recording.......2004-07-30
This is an incredible recording of Bach's Orchestral Suite. It was recorded in high-resolution Direct Stream Digital (DSD) format. The recording is crystal clear, the different tonalities of the various instruments are clearly heard and the sound stage is rock solid. The performance is one of the best I have listened to. Even though the Boston Baroque uses period instruments, none of the strident, edgy sound which period instruments usually produce is noticeable here. In other words, this is a lush recording that every lover of Bach's music simply must have!
About this Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD), it is what is called a `hybrid' disc, meaning it has two layers, a standard compact disc layer compatible with all compact disc players, and a high-definition layer recorded in DSD and playable only on a SACD player. The DSD layer has two copies of the same program, one in high-definition, two channel stereo for listening over headphones or on a standard stereo system, and a second, high-definition, multichannel copy for playing on a surround-sound system. Thus, you get a total of three separate copies of the same program, which one you listen to depends on the system you are playing it on.
This recording is also available on standard compact disc for about $4.00 less, but I recommend buying this SACD version. Even if you don't have a SACD player yet, you probably will own one in the near future since many new compact disc players and DVD players will play SACDs.

For anyone with more than a casual interest in music, any music, A History of Baroque Music: Instrumental Music and its companion volume devoted to secular music will prove invaluable. Here, thoughtfully arranged as five thematic programmes, is an anthology that delivers exactly what the title promises, and in doing so lays out the foundations of Western music; not just classical music, but the folk tradition and most everything else that has developed since. Despite the budget price, the collection is attractively packaged like a miniature LP box set, each disc presented in its own tastefully designed card sleeve. There is an astonishing six and a half hours of music, from the emergence of instrumental forms in the early 16th century to the development of the baroque orchestra and the concerto, with the final disc being devoted to an exploration of the specifically German Lutheran and polyphonic tradition. The accompanying booklet sets the context with 25 pages of, clear, accessible English-language notes, making the collection appropriate for educational use as well as providing undiluted pleasure through the music of Bach, Corelli, Dowland, Handel, Monteverdi, Purcell, Telemann, Vivaldi, and many lesser-known composers. The recordings, taken from Harmonia Mundi's extensive back catalog, come from many of the top names in early music performance, including the Academy of Ancient Music, William Christie, Ensemble 415, René Jacobs, London Baroque, and Ton Koopman and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. In other words, this is an anthology of the very highest quality, a rich banquet of absolutely wonderful music. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
Incredible sound, incredible performances.......2002-12-03
This 5-CD set, one of three parts of an anthology of baroque music originally called "Pathways of Baroque Music," is undoubtedly the best introduction to Baroque music that has been issued, and it should be in the collection of every lover of Baroque or classical music. Unlike most anthologies or single-disk samplings of baroque music, the works are arranged according to genre and in historical order. Thus the set is extremely useful for increasing our understanding of Baroque instrumental music and its development, while giving us a taste of many composers and works that even hardened Baroque music lovers like myself may never have heard of.
What is more, the quality of the recordings and of the disks is unmatched -- I have never heard better sound out of my stereo equipment than I have with these disks, except perhaps when playing DVDs with 5-track surround sound and DTS. While these are only "conventional" CDs, I think they even sound better than the small number of SACDs that I have purchased. I wish harmonia mundi would re-release the whole 15-CD collection in large quantity so that we can purchase them new instead of used!
History of Baroque Music: great sound, wealth of information.......2002-01-30
This review is based on the French edition. The textual portion of the booklet is trilingual (French, English, German). The playlist is partly bilingual. The music is grouped and subgrouped by genre.
Disks:
The Emergence of Instrumental Music-transition from the earlier Renaissance: Improvisation, toccata, dance, etc.
Chamber Music
The Baroque Orchestra
Concerto
The Specifically German
All of the last four are similarly subgrouped.
The text is very informative about genres and specific compositions. This recording is refreshing in that it presents some lovely but lesser known music of the Baroque era.
Above all, Baroque music is a wonderful stress-buster. It is a shame this lovely collection has been so hard to get.
