Chopin - Pletnev

This all-Chopin disc marked Mikhail Pletnev's debut as a pianist on Deutsche Grammophon. Although Pletnev's interpretive approach was castigated in some corners, his playing is admirable and extraordinarily manly, with a decidedly Slavic cast and yet with all kinds of elegance. One is struck repeatedly by Pletnev's crystalline arpeggiations, the velocity of his passage work, his singing tone, his rhythmic suppleness, and, above all, the grandeur of his sound. And does DG ever do a number on that! If you've ever turned pages or played on a real stage, this is the sound you hear: big, resonant, incredibly solid, rich in overtones, and slow to decay. The weight and immediacy of the lower octave are better captured here than on most other recordings, as is the action of the dampers. --Ted Libbey

3 out of 5 stars Alas, Partly Too Exaggerated for Repeated Listening.......2007-05-09

Mr Pletnev is undoubtedly on the short-list of the greatest living pianists. His interpretations are always exceedingly individual--his unique voice of hyper-nimble, sensitive and singing fingers constantly permeating his performances. However, the downside of his highly idiosyncratic playing as that it at times gets too self-indulgent and attention-seeking. In the case of Chopin, some people may well argue that he is the one to be blamed, not Pletnev, as his music opens itself to such an endless variability of interpretative options--which is also why his music is so difficult to interpret the `correct' or `perfect' way. Nonetheless, on rare occasions, one encounters this--in Perahia's Piano Concertos, Argerich's Scherzos Nos 2 & 3, or in the case of Pletnev his live Carnegie Hall Scherzo No 4 (see further my review).

As to this very Chopin recital, the three Etudes indeed belong to this elusive select group of `perfect' performances--have the G-flat-major `Black Keys' ever run with such feather-light fingers, have the fearsome G-sharp-minor thirds ever sounded so seamlessly even, or has the slow C-sharp-minor `bel canto' theme ever been `sung' with such delicacy? Also the three Ecossaises are given truly masterful five-star interpretations. Lastly, the sadness of the A-minor Waltz is captured with a rare sense of beauty.

Unfortunately, that is where the good things end about this recital. The two major works--the F-minor Fantaisie and the B-minor Sonata--are really disappointing in Pletnev's hands. Indeed, he tries his utmost to make them sound special and original, but in the process the natural flow of beauty inherent in Chopin's masterful writing is partly lost. It is not the at times excessively slow tempos themselves that cause the damage, but rather the tendency to speed up and slow down things, as it seems, almost randomly that makes one lose the track of the music. Just listen to Mr Demidenko (Hyperion Helios), who--although clocking in almost identically with Pletnev on each movement--makes you shiver with joy through his natural way of delivering the pure exquisiteness of the music. The remaining two Waltzes and the A-flat-major Impromptu are given similar treatment, although the exaggerations stay within reasonable proportions thanks to the limited lengths or the works.

To sum up--this recital could have been an out-and-out five-star recommendation had the priceless pianism apparent in the Etudes and Ecossaises been given also to the other works. Hence, the overall grade can only be three stars--the recorded sound, though being rather close, cannot be faulted. All the same, at repeated listening, one increasingly starts hoping Pletnev will be given opportunity to commit all the Chopin Etudes (or perhaps even more the Godowsky elaborations!) to disc--that could indeed be quite an event...

5 out of 5 stars A dazzling Chopin recital.......2006-02-17

Michail Pletnev is one of those performers who brings a little extra something to the music he plays. This will not appeal to all who expect a piece of music to be played within a narrow corridor of technique and intrepration. In all his performances - Scarlatti, CPE Bach, the Russian works and Chopin - Pletnev certainly can never be faulted for being dull, ploding or banal. Conversely, his pianism is always thrilling and exhilerating to experience (in spite of the rather unique "signature" that he puts on the music).

Probably the one facet of his "signature" style that is most breathtaking is the crystallinity, crispness and etherealness of his running demisemiquavers. His "plucky" and hyperkinetic articulation is the G-flat and G-sharp major Etude (and the A-flat major Impromptu for that matter) are absolutely thrilling and a highlight of this disc.

All of these qualities - along with a keen sensitivity for Chopin's form and poetry - combine to make a most satisfying Chopin recital worth hearing in a crowded sea of Chopin recordings. This CD has a nice variety that showcase Pletnev's wide range of pianistic skills. While other pianists may exude a more elegant and refined poetry in "Parlor Pieces" like the Waltzes, Nocturnes or Impromptus, Pletnev injects a unique dynamism into such works that frees them of any hint of sappiness or sameness and charges them with a greater kinetic energy. Not to say his playing is all about energy as his reading of the hauntingly lovely A-minor Waltz brims with expression and allure, while the C-sharp minor Etude transports the listener to a beautiful, dreamy world.

The highlight of the recital for some will be his superb reading of the Sonata No. 3 in B-minor - a daunting work that Pletnev brings to a vibrant life. (this work in particular got strong reviews). Speaking of reviews, Penguin Guide gave this recital a top 3/3 stars, concluding, "For all of one's reservation of the personal element, this is most distinguished playing indeed." Yes indeed, Pletnev brings a thilling element to most anything he puts his fingers to, and this has earned him many passionate fans. All-in-all, a most enjoyable and exciting Chopin program played with dazzling and dreamy effect and recorded in that legendary brilliant, full-bodied DG sound that makes the piano sound right in front of you. Compositions - 5 stars; Performance - 5 stars; Sound Quality - 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Chopin the Pletnev way.......2006-02-15

Today I listened to this cd for the first time. I have not heard such a unique, personal interpretation of Chopin for a long time. You may not always agree with some of his interpretative choices, but this is undoubtedly a very exciting and surprising cd.
If you love Chopin, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars B R I L L I A N T !!!.......2003-09-23

I am truly astonished that this CD, despite the fact that it has been released for nearly five years, has not been rated by anyone at Amazon. Among my very bulky collection of Chopin's oeuvre this release of Pletnev I consider one of his best. So far he's released three CDs entirely with compositions by this composer. I admire the interpretation of Chopin's works on the other studio recording (Sonata No. 2, Scherzo No. 2), however, I find it quite inferior to this one as far as the quality of sound is concerned. Particularly I dislike the excessive amount of reverb. This recording, however, is simply superb in every possible aspect. The whole of it represents a wonderfully compiled recital, each piece rendered with gorgeous and stylish interpretation. You can feel how each representation is a result of the interpreter's devotion to each piece. Pletnev's Chopin is thoughtful, poetic, beautiful, and brilliant. Above all, Pletnev's Chopin is new and individual. Unlike the plethora of pianists busily recording Chopin, Pletnev is releasing only the compositions as a result of true artistic reconsideration. Here, in my opinion, he brings an incredibly inspiring Fantasy in F minor as well as the Sonata No. 3 in B minor. In the Finale of the Sonata he puts to shame all other grandiose interpreters. Yes, Chopin requires devotion! All the other smaller works on this CD are simply an infallible approach in the rediscovering of the Slavic composer. When it comes to its sonic qualities the entire CD is an unquestionable success.
I do hope that Pletnev will release more Chopin, specifically the Nocturnes.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The 44-year-old Russian pianist-conductor Mikhail Pletnev made a belated Carnegie Hall debut as a pianist in November 2000. Listening to that recital on this CD confirms the wisdom of the pianist's decision to resign as music director of the Russian National Orchestra. In the Bach-Busoni "Chaconne," Pletnev's crescendos wash over the listener like tidal waves; the mighty edifice of the music seems to rise, mysteriously and inexorably, on its own. The angry surges in the first movement of Beethoven's Sonata, opus 111, are perhaps overdrawn. But the concluding movement's variations glide by as if in a dream, suggesting the transformation of the earlier movement's passionate anger into a vision of Paradise beyond the power of words to describe. In Chopin's Four Scherzos, Pletnev emphasizes too many details and inhibits the music's lyrical sweep. But the charm and dazzling pyrotechnics of his encores help make this the first great piano recording of the millennium. After Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Scarlatti, and Moszkowski, Pletnev's fifth and final encore was Balakirev's transcendentally difficult Islamey. The superhuman virtuosity, sonorous splendor, and Technicolor exoticism of this performance will knock your socks off--and the rest of your clothes as well! --Stephen Wigler

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......2007-07-06

This is an amazing performance, especially as it was recorded live and not reworked in a studio. Pletnev is one of this generation's greatest pianists. He manages to find nuances in the music that make these works fresh, particularly the four Chopin Scherzi that are part of every concert pianist's repertoire. The bonus CD is especially fine as it shows how Pletnev is capable of playing just about any style of music. As if the rest of the program wasn't virtuosic enough, Pletnev caps off the concert with the fiendishly difficult Islamey as one of his encores.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Millennium Event.......2007-05-09

Having written extensively on Mr Pletnev's hyper-idiosyncratic playing in his 1997 Chopin Recital, it is interesting to turn to his 2000 live Carnegie Hall Recital--where the main programmed attractions are the four Chopin Scherzos. You will not find a better recording of the Scherzos as a group--even if Argerich surpasses Pletnev in terms of ferocious drive and sheer brilliance in Nos 2 & 3. Pletnev's Scherzo No 4 is the best yet to have appeared on disc--`perfect' in the sense that music virtually comes to life as a free-standing organism. Never before has Chopin's genial writing in this work been conveyed with such impeccable mastery.

As one can expect, all the large-scale bombast in the Bach-Busoni Chaconne is delivered with high-voltage pianism in the Grand Manner. By sharp contrast, the second movement in Beethoven's last Sonata is given its probably dreamiest account ever--which evidently reveals Beethoven as one of the main initiators of the romantic era. As far as the encores go, generously provided by DG on the supplementary disc, they are delivered with such panache and masterfulness that you are unlikely to find them bettered--irrespective of where you look. The Balakirev Islamey really has to be heard to be believed--other great modern versions by Gavrilov and Berezovsky pale by comparison.

This extraordinary live recital more than anything confirms Pletnev's position as one of the truly greatest living pianists. The only drawback is that the CD makes you envy those lucky souls who had the opportunity of being there on site. Luckily enough, DG's recording is a worthy second best.

5 out of 5 stars A first - rate pianist!.......2006-07-13

The sumptuous and refined style of Michael Plentev confirms the accurate security Sviatoslav Richter kept in mind at the moment he accepted to become his musical mentor. The time, the supreme judge and the great audiences around the world have fortunately verified this initial statement.

Plentev is without discussion, one of the major pianists in the actual musical stages. His prodigious technique has worked out under expression' s service, and the result is absolutely gratifying. He has captured the essential musical roots around the whole pianist repertoire, and being such young artist we eventually will have to wait for future major achievements.

When you listen him, you should realize his outcome precedes form that inner vision conferred by the touch of genius.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of flash....Too much, in fact.......2004-08-18

To say that Pletnev reminds me of the flamboyant pianists of the past would be a slight to the flamboyant pianists of the past. Even though they were not being kosher to the score, there was something about them that held interest. Pletnev often doesn't even do that. These are very superficial, shallow performances.

Things start off very encouraging, with a stupendous Bach-Busoni Chaconne. At this point I was ready to give the album five stars. Pletnev thunders, he turns his piano into an organ, he turns in one intense reading. Ah, I thought, we are going to be in for a treat.

But that's the high point. His next work is very different and calls for a very different approach, and he treats it largely the same. He adds his own razzle-dazzle to Beethoven's Op. 111 rather than take the trouble to find the depth *in* the music itself. Now, I'm not a pedant (at least I don't think so!) but these departures add no insights are just make a hash of Beethoven's own extremely powerful ideas. Pletnev plays piano where it is not written, freely adds sfumatos, ignores and adds accents at will, twists and turns the structure--to no advantage I can see other than to say "I'm here, pay attention to ME!" But most damningly of all, he doesn't hold the Arietta together to my ears, failing to find a common thread for the various variations that unify this enigmatic work. The second movement felt very long, and when, say, I listen to Schnabel (1933) in this music, I have no sense how much time has gone by. Lest anyone think I am too conservative, let me say that two of my favorite Op. 111s are Ernest Levy and Anatol Ugorski! The Chopin is just as bad, with too much fussiness in the ornamental details that has little to do with Chopin's piece and a lot to do with Pletnev's fingers. If you ever wondered what Chopin sounded like as played by Liszt on bipolar meds, this is it. The music's own shapes, momentums and moods are ignored so that Mikkey can plow through the notes as fast as humanly possible. (And that he can do.)

The encores don't excite me as much as they do some other reviewers. Want to hear really stunning Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableauxes (if that's a word), listen to Sviatoslav Richter--he finds fireworks *inside* the score, not by juxtaposing his ideas over it. The reviewer below who said the better the music, the worse the performances, hit the nail right on the head. That's also how I've felt about his conducting, from what I've sampled: lots of sound and fury, signifying nothing. I'm perplexed that this was among Amazon's "Best of 2001." Maybe 2001 wasn't a good year.

5 out of 5 stars great piano pieces.......2007-06-25

I found a recording of a few of these pieces and I was so taken with them that I tried to get the sheet music of the whole set. My sheet music supplier finally tracked it down in Japan and being a poor pianist I have spent a long time trying to learn one of them. (Meditation.) To my surprise, I found this Pletnev disc of the whole set
in my local record store. I was surprised how beautiful and exciting these pieces are. Many, but not all are well beyond my pianistic skills. The last piece of the set, a wild Russian dance is incredible. Pletnev plays them all beautifully. This disc is now one of my favourite Piano discs, even though a few months ago they were unknown to me.

5 out of 5 stars Pletnev Intuitive Tchaikovsky.......2006-07-04

Mikhail Pletnev understands his birthright Russian music as well as any keyboard artist before the public today. Though his repertoire is vast and includes most of the major works for piano alone, piano in duet (as in his miraculous collaboration with Martha Argerich), and in concerto with orchestra, here he entertains us in a lovely performance of the not well known Morceaux (18) for piano, Op. 72 from Tchaikovsky's later years. They are light and airy and demanding of fine technique and Pletnev plays them in a conversational mood.

Pletnev seems to feel equally at home in the dust and thunder mode as in the quietly elegiac zones and even finds the humor in some of these tasty little show-off works. Each piece is molded autonomously and yet he makes the series of 18 somehow fit together as though they were conceived as a unit.

As an added nod to the audience Pletnev offers Chopin's Nocturne No. 20 in C sharp minor is a smoothly elegant fashion that makes us wish a second CD of all of the Nocturnes was included! A fine recital by a fine pianist. Grady Harp, July 06

5 out of 5 stars Delicate rarities, rare delicacies.......2006-01-06

After enjoying Pletnev's superb recordings of Tchaikovsky's Four Season's, Nutcracker piano arrangements and complete Symphonies, I had high expectations for this live recording, which were fully met.

This was my first encounter with this opus and I enjoyed it greatly. While the works are an opposite of the dense structure obsessed masterpieces that Brahms produced in his final years, they do give a light hearted compendium of Tchaikovsky's mastery.

Upon repeated listening any sense of triviality disappeared and was replaced by a profound appreciation for this rarely performed work.

In line with the composition Pletnev approaches it in an at times improvisational approach, that requires full mastery of the idiom to do this well. While somewhere not fully appreciative, I liked it a lot.

A Chopin nocturne encore was included in the recording. While it may not be quite up there with Bolet's reference recording, this too was excellent.

The recording is not really state of the art, audience noise and all, but this does not distract from the excellent performance.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful rarities.......2005-09-29

Tchaikovsky's solo piano music is seldom played in concert and infrequently recorded. As a previous reviewer wrote, Pletnev is very comfortable in this idiom - sometimes too much so. He has a fantastic technique and can at times be glib - in the way he brings out the left-hand melody in the Valse Bluette, for example. There is more to be grateful for than to complain about here, though - both in the music and the performing. Ballet fans will want to hear this disc, by the way, because 3 of these pieces - the Valse Bluette, L'Espiegle and Un Poco di Chopin - were orchestrated after Tchaikovsky's death and became part of the score of the revised "Swan Lake" mounted in St. Petersburg in 1895. Pletnev (and Deutsche Gramophon) are to be thanked for reviving this lively, often beautiful and unjustly neglected music.

4 out of 5 stars MUSICAL PANCAKES.......2005-06-02

This is a very welcome addition to my collection of out-of-the-way 19th century piano music. The 18 pieces here date from the last year of the composer's life. `Musical pancakes' was his own humorous description of music he said he was only doing for the money, although he also declared that he was finding the work easier and more congenial as he went along. Not only are the pieces new to me, this disc marks the debut of Mikhail Pletnev in my cd-library, so I had high expectations.

The expectations have been partly fulfilled. Pletnev finds Tchaikovsky easy, and there is no doubt of his technical grasp. The idiom comes naturally to him, and many things he does here are really very pretty, like the echo-effect in the 13th number. In general though I have to call his playing assured rather than really distinguished or distinctive. I would have welcomed rather more refinement in his touch here and there. The tone of some big chords is slightly coarse, for instance. Right-hand runs in the scherzo or the `characteristic dance' could have done with a bit more `bite' to them, in the trills throughout it doesn't do to recall how Gould or Michelangeli handle that sort of thing, and the final avalanche of notes in the polonaise is really rather suggestive of emptying a sack of coal. Whether the recording has something to do with this I'm not certain, but I suspect not to any great extent - it sounds very faithful in general.

The novelty and intrinsic interest of the pieces more than make up for any of that. They are Tchaikovsky-without-tears, and very pleasantly varied. Two of them avowedly suggest Schumann and Chopin, and the `elegiac song' is reminiscent of something I know well by Liszt. By and large, I think that if I had heard these pieces played without attribution to their composer I would have had to guess who that might have been but would not have been surprised when I found out. They don't seem to me quite as good as some really delightful numbers by Smetana that I recently acquired on a 2-disc Brilliant Classics set performed by Antonin Kubalek and Peter Schmalfuss, but any problem that might have given me is solved by owning both.

The liner-note is mainly small-talk, but at least it tells us something about the pieces, and the recording is perfectly acceptable. This was a live recital quite recently in Zurich, and the enthusiasm of the applause suggests that the audience had fewer reservations about what they just heard than I have, so perhaps you too will be less qualified in your appreciation. As an encore Pletnev gives a Chopin nocturne, and my thoughts about that are along much the same lines as my thoughts about his Tchaikovsky. One can afford to be very critical these days, and this is a recital I'm thoroughly pleased now to own.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars MEMORABLE MUSIC TO LAST 1000 NIGHTS ..........2003-05-22

This Chopin compilation shows off some of his most popular works as interpreted by some of the most distinguished conductors and pianists of today. Billed somewhat embarrassingly as "Chopin's Greatest Hits", it does presents original versions of music adapted in motion pictures such as "The Pianist," "Shine" and "The Piano." The great variety of Chopin's genius, from nocturnes and waltzes to mazurkas and a polonaise, is very much in evidence. The artists on the CD are culled from the great concert halls of today. Claudio Arrau opens with two exquisite nocturnes, and later the virtuosity of Vladimir Ashkenazy shines through with a mazurka and Polonaise. The lush and luxuriant music created by Chopin has never been equaled, and listening to this disc is reminiscent of a thousand nights and a thousand Hollywood movies. When asked how he was able to write music to order for the studios, Oscar Levant replied, "It takes a lot out of you. But it takes more out of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach." And film composers from the beginning of sound have takes a lot out of Chopin. --- Contributed by Staff Member Stephen J. Finn
