Shostakovitch's influence shadows much of this disc, most obviously in the Trumpet Concerto of his friend Moissei Vainberg. It's a serious work, despite its plethora of virtuosic opportunities for the soloist. There's an emotionally charged slow movement and perky outer ones. While it's a tough workout for any trumpet virtuoso, Nakariakov, at 23, is one of the world's elite players, so this work holds no terrors for him. He sails through it with firm, lovely tonal variety, making the most of the lyrical first movement, the darker second, and the quote-filled finale. Artunian's jazzy concerto is a light appetizer to the Vainberg, and the harmless Gliere Concerto, arranged for flugelhorn, gives us an opportunity to hear that mellifluous instrument. The Vainberg is the main event and it's worth knowing, while Nakariakov's splendid playing will entrance. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:
one of the best classical trumpet albums ever recorded.......2006-10-27
While the music recorded here does not deserve mention alongside the trumpet concerti of Haydn and Hummel and the second Brandenburg concerto of Bach, nevertheless these are very good compositions, and not often heard. They'll add a good deal of depth to your collection, even if your interest is in classical orchestral music generally and not trumpet music specifically.
Nakariakov is an able virtuoso and he serves these pieces well. In my opinion, he elsewhere has devoted far too much of his efforts to impressive but superficial showpieces and transcriptions; this is one of the few of his albums of full length concert works from the trumpet repertoire. So while it is perhaps not as effective as other of his albums in terms of trumpet virtuosity for its own sake, in my estimation this is nevertheless his most sophisticated and aesthetically meaningful album and the greatest accomplishment of his career.
The Arutiunian concerto is a shorter, pleasingly tuneful work that strikes me as two parts Saint-Saëns, one part Russian modality. For as familiar as the piece is to trumpeters, it is unfortunately not often heard outside of their teaching studios. So while there is in fact not a great deal of competition, this is certainly the best recorded performance of the piece I've heard; and it would be hard to image a superior reading by any of the world's great trumpet virtuosi, for here we have a passionate, technically formidable performance, and by a Russian player to boot.
Many reviewers write of the Veinberg concerto as representative of the style of Shostakovich, but I think that comparison could only stand up in consideration of Shostakovich's most abstract, dissonant, experimental works: the Fourth Symphony, for example. To my mind this piece has far more in common with Bartók and Hindemith than with the large majority of Shostakovich. It's sparsely orchestrated and very dry, the full ensemble sounding only occasionally; and even then the writing is very lean, never approaching any sort of rich, sumptuous, Brahmsian sonority. The thematic material is highly absract (and this is rare for a trumpet concerto... the only other pieces I would consider assigning to the same category of expression would be those by Henri Thomasi).
In the Glière, a horn concerto played here on the flugelhorn, it's really surprising just how much Nakariakov sounds like a trombone player. It's a gorgeous and unique sound that he makes, lyrical and captivating. The piece comes out of the language of early Romanticism, recalling Schubert and Mendelssohn (as Glière had no intention of risking his life and career by adopting the dissonant, experimental language that got Shostakovich into so much trouble with the Soviets), but again with notes of a very Russian character, as with the other pieces on this album.
A real accomplishment for Nakariakov.
The best Arutiunian recording around!.......2006-03-22
I have been looking for a recording of the Artiunian trumpet concerto that accurately captured the composer's many dynamic, breathe, and tempo markings--which are all very precise. Nakariakov does it, and still gives the piece the Armenian soulfulness it contains. Even if you never listen to anything else on this CD, you will have the most masterful recording to date of the Artiunian trumpet concerto. I enjoy it tremendously.
Rarely Heard Works for Trumpet and Orchestra Courtesy of Nakariakov and Boreyko.......2005-11-17
Now and then a CD happens along that is so tasty that it becomes a surprise favorite. This beautifully performed recording features the fine trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov with Andrey Boreyko conducting the Jenaer Philharmonie.
The works are varied, from the delightful but not so challenging Gliere Concerto for horn & orchestra in B flat (here adapted for flugelhorn) to the brilliant Mieczyslaw Vainberg Concerto for trumpet & orchestra in B flat, Op 94. This latter is a work of dynamic, dramatic contrasts, from the lyrical beauty of the opening movement to the deeply moving slow movement to the challenging and high-flying finale. Nakariakov is a true virtuoso and his facility with his instrument and intense commitment to the score make this a joy to hear. The CD opens with a bit of pastiche in the delightful Concerto for trumpet and orchestra by Alexander Arutiunian, an apropos introduction for this fine recital.
Andrey Boreyko provides superb collaboration with his sensitive conducting. These two young men are important rising stars in the field and welcome additions from Russia to the stages of the world. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, November 05
A great CD.......2005-01-06
Sergei's Artunian is one of the best ive ever heard. His interpritation of that piece is perfect. Being a young trumpet player myself, it is an inspiration to listen to such a great musician. Both the other pieces on this cd are exellent. The Vainberg concerto is amazing, you can also hear quotes from some of the most well known trumpet exerpts, including petrouchka and mahlers 5th. The Horn Concerto is played beautifully on the flugel horn. His phrasing and expression are perfect.
A great album, well worth the buy!

CD and DVD -- zamechatel'niye!.......2005-10-21
The local PBS channel featured Helmut Lotti's "From Russia With Love" for the recent pledge drive. They got my support! And I got this wonderful CD and equally wonderful DVD. Helmut Lotti has a superb voice and he sings these Russian songs with such passion! Remarkably, he does not speak Russian, but learned the lyrics phonetically. Here are some of my favorite folk songs: Polyushko polye, Cherniye ochi, Kalinka. And some popular Russian songs which made it to the American hit parade: Dorogoy dlinnoyu ("Those Were the Days, My Friend") and the English language rendition of "Dream Away" ("A Stranger in Paradise"). Helmut gives a sweet, personal touch to movie themes "From Russia With Love" and "Lara's Theme" and a poignant "Far East of the Sun." These latter are sung in English. The final stanza of "Far East," a song from the Siberian gulag, could bring tears to your eyes! The finale is the Russian National Anthem. This is one of the most beautiful and singable of all anthems. The pleasing music has recently been given new lyrics by its original composer. Helmut sings the updated version accompanied by the Red Army Ensemble. My only criticism of the CD: lyrics should have been provided for nonRussian speakers. But I'm certain a web-search could easily locate lyrics and translations. The DVD features the same wonderful songs, with videos of Russian villagers and Cossacks in traditional costume. Helmut's trip through Russia on the TransSiberia Railroad provides the backdrop to the musical DVD. Through his eyes you see the splendor of this awesome, huge country. I recommend watching the DVD to get a feel for the artist's own appreciation of Russia. You'll feel the love each time you listen to the CD!

Customer Reviews:
An artist at work.......2001-09-13
When these recordings were made, hearing music coming from a rudimental display was probably considered a miracle; discs were made to amaze people, maybe to show off technical improvements, an above all to sell music: the quality of the recorded performance didn't matter too much, while the important thing was to have a Waltz by Chopin or a Prelude by Debussy on record. But Arthur Rubinstein always did concern about quality: he didn't make any mechanical piano recording, because he thought the piano sounded "like a banjo", and he accepted to get into a studio only after being sure the results were going to be worthy. While other musicians did anything to get immortalized into Concerto-for-banjo-like recordings, Ruby chose to wait until recorded music was a serious thing. Indeed, in this early selection of encores, we hear a great pianist, but an even greater artist, in whom we can easily recognise the main character of Rubinstein's beautiful autobiography.
Vintage Early Rubinstein.......2000-10-10
The recordings on this CD date from 1929-1937, and catch Rubinstein during his years as a devil-may-care virtuoso. Because of the limited playing time of 78rpm records, all of the pieces featured here are shorter works, which makes for a wonderful grab-bag of selections showcasing Rubinstein's wide pianistic culture. With two exceptions, all of the performances here show Rubinstein at his best.
One exception, Chopin's Waltz Op. 34, No. 1, suffers from some crudely banged out bass notes during the coda. Rubinstein transforms this piece from "Grande Valse Brilliante" into "Grand Valse Violente."
Of special importance here are Rubinstein's first official recordings of several pieces associated with him. Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10 is irresistable in his hands, the friska being tossed off with flirtatious elan. (There is actually an earlier recording, from 1910, of the Rhapsody which was not included in this collection) The ever popular Consolation No. 3, on the other hand is rather strange: the left hand part suffers from some uneven fingerwork which makes the piece sound like a habanera, ruining the poetic atmosphere of the music.
Rubinstein's arrangements of Falla's Dance of Terror and Fire Dance were favorite encores which flatly contradict his criticism of Vladimir Horowitz' Carmen Variations as being in poor taste. As encores, both pianists' arrangements were marvelous pieces that brought audiences to their feet.
Concluding this volume are three selections from Villa-Lobos' Doll Suite. They are wonderful pieces of charming fluff that Rubinstein performed from time to time.
The sound, which has been remastered from original sources, has been remarkably cleaned up without excessive filtering.

Here's an interesting concept: two CDs of great classical music excerpts combined with a nearly 250-page booklet featuring a glossary of all the major classical terms (from adagio to zarzuela), along with brief biographical notes for all the composers included. The excerpts are all generally superb, the price can't be beat, and the liner notes should be informative to any classical neophyte--not a bad introduction to classical music's greatest hits. The set might have been even more effective if the music was listed chronologically (rather than by composer's last name), but this is a minor qualm. --Edward Garabedian

Remembering Past Enchantments And Past Ills.......2004-06-07
Few composers outside of the classical canon have expressed the ineffable as beautifully as Ennio Morricone. The Italian Morricone, who has written scores of wildly varying quality for over 400 films, came to international prominence with and is still best - known in America for his "Spaghetti Western" scores of several classic Sergio Leone films of the Sixties, such as A Fistful of Dollars (1964), The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966), and Once Upon A Time In The West (1969).
With the Leone scores, Morricone created musical pieces structured like complex mathematical equations, many of which were suffused with a driving, hypnotic, and archetypal power. In fact, the soundtrack for The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly was so dramatically dynamic that it thoroughly outstripped the finished film in terms of imaginative potential. Only with Once Upon A Time In The West did Leone create a film well crafted and realized enough to match Morricone's entrancing, playful, and occasionally perditious score. Similarly, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1969) almost completely failed to utilize Morricone's contribution, the best portions of which were heard only dimly and sporadically in the finished film. Leone's late masterpiece, Once Upon A Time In America (1984), two - thirds a perfect film, also failed to fully rise to the occasion of Morricone's simultaneously poignant, wistful, and wonderfully exuberant score.
Today, Morricone's work is available on literally hundreds of soundtracks and soundtrack compilations dedicated to the composer, very few of which are entirely satisfying. An Ennio Morricone Anthology (1995), which contains 45 tracks from 39 films produced in Italy from 1965 onward, perpetuates this frustrating tradition.
Of the 45 tracks, about a third represent Morricone realizing or approaching the height of his talent, another third are fairly interesting but ultimately repetitious and self-cannibalizing, and the final third, which may have worked reasonably well within the context of the films they were written for, never rise above the status of shrill, discordant, and bellowing kitsch (several attempt a Henry Mancini - like levity and fall flat). In fact, there is a great deal of healthy, raw, and leveling vulgarity even in some of Morricone's most famous compositions, such as "Le Vent, Le Cri" from 1981's The Professional and "Chi Mai" from 1971's Maddalena, both of which are included.
Those seeking haunting compositions on the scale of "L'Estasi Dell 'Oro" or "Il Triello" from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly or "Poverty" from Once Upon A Time In America will be disappointed to find very few pieces approaching their caliber here, especially if already familiar with such well - known pieces such as "Moscow Farewell" from the 1987 film of the same name or the otherworldly "Il Gatto A Nove Code" from The Cat O' Nine Tails (1971).
As compositions of vastly different quality are interspersed amongst one another in dizzying array, many may find An Ennio Morricone Anthology virtually impossible to listen to from beginning to end without skipping tracks repeatedly. As a genius whose greatest compositions address both the immanent and the transcendent, both perdition and salvation, both the archaic and the modern, Morricone and his admirers deserve a more carefully selected and thoughtfully produced anthology than this haphazard collection offers.
Delightful scores from Ennio Morricone.......1998-12-19
Few composers in film music today are as greatly admired as Ennio Morricone whose scores for a wide range of screen fares and many Oscar nominations and wins have attracted the attention of fans all over the world. This compilation is one of the best and contains very fine original musics and rare tracks of this Italian composer.

This wonderful five-disc set presents Emil Gilels in previously unpublished stereo recordings from live performances. One disc is devoted to concertos by Chopin (wonderful!) and Poulenc. The others are all solo piano, including a full disc of Mozart, three Beethoven sonatas (including the mighty Hammerklavier), major works of Scriabin, Schubert, and Shostakovich, and other shorter works. Gilels was one of the major pianists of our century. He played all of this music with great integrity and plenty of color. Melodiya's editors have selected well; there isn't a dud in the series, and some of the performances are truly magnificent. Highly recommended to pianophiles! -- Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
A must-have for any piano lover!.......2004-07-30
Gilels publicly performed a limited number of pieces (he only played those with which he felt a "personal relationship," this set demonstrates the wide range Gilels had as a pianist. From the transcendent Mozart to the earthly 20th century Medtner, Gilels is always in total control of how he presents the music.
A previous reviewer claimed that Gilels "shaded" all of his playing the same way regardless of the composer or piece being performed. I emphatically disagree with this statement; if you listen to a lot of piano recordings, you become aware of the subtle nuances different performers have and how they present different pieces. Gilels very clearly differentiates the clarity of Mozart's classicism with the distinctly "Russian" music of Prokofiev. If you are interested in understanding the art of pianism, you will not be disappointed by this set.
A Rarified Talent.......2000-03-22
This is one of the better box sets I've seen lately. The choice of repetoire is wonderful, covering the classics, (Mozart, Beethoven) to the Romantics, (Schubert, Schumann, Chopin), to twentieth century masterpieces by Ravel, Shostakovich and Scriabin. The surprises of the set are the Medtner Sonata (Lovely!) and the Poulenc concerto. Absolute stunners both. My main hitch is with Gilels himself. While every performance is near definitive, it's Gilels who can't seem to see much difference between Mozart and Scriabin. He colors and shades everything almost exactly the same way and while it is fascinating, it just gets old sometimes. I'm just hard to convince that one mans personality can so ruthlessly crush that of the composers and be RIGHT everytime. It's not possible, especially in light of the great composers portrayed within. But it is fascinating to hear Gilels battle with the material in such a way, even if you just end up feeling sorry for the futility of it all. A fantastic buy at a little over $30.
