The Ultimate Mozart Album: Mozart's Greatest Love Songs

Editorial Reviews

This collection contains highlights from Mozart's five greatest operas and not only is the perfect collection for those wishing to get their Mozartian feet wet, but often selects the ideal choice for each particular excerpt. It's almost a who's who in Mozart nowadays (Bryn Terfel, Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, and Samuel Ramey) as well as a who-was-who-recently: Kiri Te Kanawa at her most melting as the Countess in Figaro, Leontyne Price as a fiery, agile Donna Elvira, Cesare Valetti--still unbeatable after 40 years as Don Ottavio--and Cesare Siepi as a dangerously sexy seducer in Don Giovanni. Birgit Nilsson's Donna Anna is a tad clumsy and, at times, one wishes that conductor Georg Solti would lighten up, but otherwise this is a splendid hour-plus of the Wolfman. It's recommended to one and all. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2001-03-30

I like this a lot. The performances in general are quite lively, articulate, and heartfelt, which is essential for Mozart more so than many other composers, and is more than can be said of many recordings out there. Ramey's Figaro, Te Kanawa's Countess, Price's Donna Elvira, Valetti's Don Ottavio, Deutekom's Queen of the night seem to stand out compared to others I've heard. Bartoli is best in the 3 duets with Terfel. She appears 5 times total; if you like her that's good. If you think she's OK (like me), then it's a bit of an overkill.

I think 4 stars is about right - some better recordings could have been found for a few of the tracks (e.g. Or sai chi l'onore), and there's a lot of Bartoli. But, there's lots of good stuff here, and some of the recordings are among the best available.

4 out of 5 stars Queen of the Night.......2000-03-27

I couldn't disagree more with Miss Snyders rating of Cristina Deutekoms singing. For me, this is by far the most thrilling and impressive rendition of the Queen second aria. The coloratura are crisp and in a murderous tempo. The sound like bell chimes and still have a threatening potential to drive Pamina into dispare. She is the only soprano that doesn't need to adjust speed of make an audible "gear-change" between legato and coloratura. As for the rest of the recording, to much Bartoli in an otherwise terrific line-up.

4 out of 5 stars Mozart's Best.......2000-03-23

This CD is a great compendium of Mozart's "greatest opera hits," so to speak, and it features many of today's big names performing the best known selections from Mozart's 5 best known operas: Cosi fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, and Die Zauberflote. It is well worth a listen if you are an opera fan who finds it cumbersome to carry from place to place all of your CD sets. It will also give a stellar introduction to the perfection that is Mozartean opera buffa and Singspiel to listeners less familiar with the genre.

The real standouts on the CD are Cecilia Bartoli (a wonderful actor), Kiri te Kanawa (the purest and sweetest voiced Countess I've ever heard), Frederica von Stade (the ultimate Cherubino), Bryn Terfel (beautiful Baritone voice, perfect for Figaro), and Gosta Winbergh (the golden-voiced hero).

However, I was disappointed with Christina Deutekom's interpretation of "Der Holle Rache". Louisa Kennedy can do marvels with that tricky aria better than anyone else I've heard. And although Birgit Nilsson has the most powerful Wagnerian soprano voice, her rendition of "Or sai chi l'onore" sounds very faint, and I think the problem is with the recording, and not with her voice.

4 out of 5 stars for not including Edita Gruberova's "Marten aller Arten" and Felicity Lott's "Ruhe Sanft". Otherwise, it has all of my favorite Mozart arias.
