Vivaldi: Motets
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
These Motets prove that Vivaldi, although best known today for his instrumental works, composed for voice and instruments with equal mastery. Indeed, the orchestral writing closely resembles that of his concertos, complete with violin and cellos solos. The soprano engages in brilliant flights of coloratura and evocations of emotions from despair, torment, fear of God's wrath and horror of death to prayerful pleading, tenderness, serenity, and gratitude for God's mercy. The orchestra not only underlines these moods but depicts the turbulent sea, the raging storm, the Divine light. The first Motet, a hymn of praise set to Psalm 112, is essentially dramatic. Cast in a series of brief movements alternating minor and major, slow and fast, homophonic and contrapuntal, it abounds with beautiful, sustained devout melodies and bursts with rhythmic vitality. The other three Motets each feature two contrasting da capo arias--the returns freely embellished--separated by a recitative and culminating in a joyful, triumphant Alleluia. This results in a certain sameness of form, but as in the concertos, which have been unjustly accused of all sounding alike, the differences in texture, mood and expression create plenty of contrast and variety. The vocal writing is very difficult, especially in the florid repeats, at one point going up all the way to a high D (the orchestra is tuned a half-step down, or it would go even higher), so Patrizia Ciofi sometimes seems to struggle. Using a "white," vibratoless tone, she occasionally sounds a bit shrill. However, her intonation is impeccable, her breath control admirable, and she clearly feels at home in the style. The orchestra is excellent, both in the accompanying and solo sections. Vivaldi creates a real surprise by adding a trombone solo to one of the first Motet's fast movements. --Edith Eisler

From the earliest planning stages for this recording, Andreas Scholl had only one orchestra in mind: the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. It's no surprise that Decca was skittish about the idea--there are, after all, many good baroque-instrument bands much closer to London--yet the star countertenor insisted that his rapport with this group was special and that it would be well worth the trouble to make the record in Sydney. Well, from the very first notes, it's clear that Scholl was right: conductor Paul Dyer and the ABO launch into the opening of Nisi Dominus with an energetic gusto that you'd sooner expect from Rinaldo Alessandrini's Concerto Italiano than from an Anglo-Saxon band. Scholl responds in kind: his vocalism is as smooth, clear, and assured as ever, but he goes beyond that--his innumerable subtle inflections of tone and timing are more reminiscent of a good orator than an opera singer. The up-tempo arias are exciting, with high-precision coloratura; Clarae stellae, a cheerful solo motet that lacks flashy vocal fireworks, gets a wonderfully insouciant little bounce. Yet the real magic is in the soft, slow arias, where Scholl and his colleagues create an almost palpable sense of wonder (slightly tinged with tension) and hold a listener in thrall as surely as an expert storyteller. Let's hope these artists make more recordings together--and that (with luck) they'll all be as marvelous as this one. --Matthew Westphal

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-11-07
About half of Vivaldi's sacred vocal music was written for solo voice. His 'Nisi Domimus' in G minor,RV608, is a comparatively rare example of a Vesper psalm set for solo voice. It is not known for what occasion this was composed, but the setting is remarkable for its variety of style and mood. The 'Salve Regina' in C minor,RV616,is one of two settings for alto and double orchestra. The liturgical text for this delicately beautiful composition belongs to one of the four Great Antiphons sung at the end of Vespers. "Clarie stellae,scintillate,Rv625" is a motet written for performance on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (July 2). "Vestro Principi divino",RV633, is an exhortation to receive the risen Christ, written for performance at the close of Holy Week. The recording also includes two concerti a quattro(concertos for strings in four parts). To my mind, Paul Dyer and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra do a fine job interpreting and performing the music of Vivaldi. While Andreas Scholl does his usual accurate and good singing, keep in mind that there are other countertenors who have recorded this music, particularly the 'Salve Regina' and the 'Nisi Dominus'. They are Michael Chance and David Daniels, who also do a very fine job of it. I think it does depend on which type of countertenor you prefer.
Thank God for Andreas Scholl.......2005-06-20
I place Andreas Scholl in the same stratosphere as Joan Sutherland and Montserrat Caballe, artists that at their very best can make you weep with joy.
This recital came after Scholl's debut recital for Decca, called Heroes. It seems that with Heroes, Andreas was trying to adopt a more vibrato-laden, operatic style. Those familiar with his earlier recordings for Harmonia Mundi undoubtedly noticed the difference. I, for one, was not quite happy with the "new" Scholl; however, with this recital, he reminded all of us what all the fuss was about.
The past year has witnessed an awakened interest in Vivaldi's music, particularly his operas. This recital, Nisi Dominus, features religious music, and it is utterly sublime. The moods range from dark and pensive to jubilant, and Andreas Scholl captures each one perfectly. The voice is like liquid gold.
I strongly urge anyone with a taste for Vivaldi to discover this recital.
The most amazing voice!.......2001-11-11
I first heard Andreas Scholl's voice from my roommate's copy of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and was totally captivated by Mr. Scholl's amazing voice. I went out and bought this CD and was not at all disappointed. The Nisi Dominus pieces are just amazing. In fact, I liked it so much I went out and bought more of Andreas Scholl's CDs. I highly recommend this CD to everyone.
Seraphic.......2001-01-08
The James Bowman/Academy of Ancient Music/Christopher Hogwood recording of Vivaldi's "Nisi Dominus" has been the unassailably supreme amongst many since the late 1970s - now it has been brutally and irretrievably summoned to contest by this beguiling recording of Andreas Scholl. Lie down, close your eyes, be still, empty your mind, and then listen to track 4 ("Cum dederit delictis suis somnum ...."). This is probably what mediaeval theologians would have described as an instance of celestial "irruption" into our dreary temporal existence. In this passage Andreas Scholl sounds like an angel from the most exalted realms of heaven - he manifests a truly preternatural musical instinct and understanding that beggars the imagination and overwhelms even after repeated listening.
Andreas Scholl sings Vivaldi.......2000-10-30
This is the best record Andreas Scholl made until now. Listen to his records of 1997 or earlier, you can clearly hear how much he has developed his voice and technics. Andreas is a great talent, I wonder how good he will get within the coming ten years. The combination with the Paul Dyer orcherstra is very nice. Andreas is a worthy new member of the 'Vlaamse school' of which Philippe Herreweghe is the most prominent. Andreas has developed is own style and still is perfecting this, he does withstand the temptation to sing in some old fashioned Italian opera like style. One setback is the technical quality of the recording. Although the recording sound quality is very good, the recording level is about 20 dB too low. On many cd-players the output is so low that the sound is not optimal due to unideal sound level / noise curves. On some cd-players the cd will not play at all, specially the German pressing, the USA one is slightly better. Hans Hilberink.

With music like this, going to church in the 1700's rocked!.......2006-11-29
Just as I think that Vivaldi has reached an insuperable level of inspiration with an aria or concerto, and nothing else can beat it or he can't exceed it, I am proven wrong. Case in point is the larghetto aria "Resplende bella". This aria actually sounds like a requiem, very solemn, emotional on the brink of death and mourning, masterly executed by Ciofi, and with the perfect vocal affections to drench and sadden the heart. If anything, the aria should be renamed "Mortis Horrores" after its leading mantra and most dramatic point reminiscent of a ritual procession. At some point, the music defies the baroque and sounds like nothing written almost three hundred years ago. Ciofi is phenomenal. Biondi complements her perfectly with the right punctuation and texture. It seems that everything or anything he plays can't be rivaled. Though I got this CD for "In Furore Giustissimae Irae", was much more pleasantly surprised by the rest of musical repertoire. Ciofi commands the strength and deliverance in the very sweeping vocal runs of the Alleluias, and the allegros from "In turbato mare irato" and " In Furore Giustissimae Irae". In the latter, Ciofi astounds with her ability to carry the same orchestral rhythm at full coloratura and note continuity. Wow! Even the recitativos are not to be missed or skipped. They really belong and find their musical right to be.
Absolutely Stunning.......2005-06-18
this has quickly turned into my all-time favorite discs. i was already a huge fan of Fabio Biondi, but hadn't heard Patrizia Ciofi. wow--what a voice! she has an absolutely stunning voice and her navigation around Vivaldi's music is exemplary as well. it goes without saying that Biondi and the magnifico Europa Galante is more than up to the task, providing a bellissimo accompaniment to Ms. Ciofi. another top-notch disc from these fantastic performers. Bravo Tutti! i would love to hear more of Vivaldi's vocal works from these artists.
favorite track: Sit nomen Domini [Largo] from Laudate pueri Dominium RV 600. unbelievably gorgeous movement and heart-wrenching. i could listen to it on repeat all day.
Highly Recommended!
do yourself a favor and purchase this CD. it is well worth it!
Another Vivaldi Triumph for Biondi With Ciofi His Muse.......2005-03-29
This is yet another perfectly sublime recording of Vivaldi's religious music for vocals and strings from violinist Fabio Biondi and his ensemble Europa Galante, a worthy successor to their wonderful 2002 recording of Vivaldi's "Stabat Mater/Nisi Dominus/Longe Mala" featuring the extraordinary countertenor David Daniels. This time Biondi has landed the considerable talents of soprano Patrizia Ciofi, whose energetic coloratura was most recently heard on the stylish "Handel Operatic Duets (Amor e gelosia)" disc with mezzo-soprano Joyce Di Donato and the splendid René Jacobs-produced recording of Mozart's "La Nozze di Figaro". It's worth noting that Daniels, Ciofi, Biondi and Europa Galante are teamed up on the upcoming recording of Vivaldi's "Bajazet".
Even though this disc is subtitled "Motets", technically the first piece, "Laudate pueri Dominum," is not a motet but an extended psalm, and even more surprising is the fact that it is a lively, challenging 23-minute work consisting of ten diverse movements, all of which Ciofi tackles with great skill. Her fiery bravura is especially evident in the opening allegro and returns toward the end in a repeat of the same movement. This provides an effective contrast to her appropriately mournful tone on "Excelsus super omnes," where she is accompanied by a somber obbligato trombone, and the beautiful legato she displays on "Gloria Patri et Filio". Ciofi shows powerfully expressed fury on both "In furore giustissimae irae" and "In turbato mare irato", the opening arias of the second and third motets, without sacrificing the inherent warmth of her voice. In contrast, she sounds joyful with great abandon on the opening aria of the last motet, "O qui coeli terraeque serenitas". The largos, "Tunc meus fletus" from "In furore..." and "Rosa quae moritur" from "O qui coeli..." both contain a melting quality that is at once inspirational and passionate, The larghetto "Resplende, bella" from "In turbato..." is arguably the disc's high point, a sensitive performance that shows off Ciofi's amazing breath control and dramatic acumen. This is lovely, hypnotic work, almost too beautiful for the deeply religious lyrics performed, with stellar performances all around.

A great Vivaldi interpreter.......2000-04-08
Even though these performances hail from 1974, Berganza's interpretations should quell any fears about the recording. Not strictly "period performance style," the singing is nonetheless emotional and captivating. I purchased this on the recommendation of a vocal expert, and he was right: Berganza is incredible in this repertoire.

Sublime.......1999-10-30
Bernard Labadie conducts Les Violins du Roy, joined by Dorothea Roschmann, soprano, and Catherine Robbin, mezzo soprano. These particular performances were recorded in L'eglise de Saint-Isadore in Quebec in 1993. Roschmann and Robbin offer nuanced and delicate interpretations which the slower, meditative duets in Pergolesi demand. While the slower movements in Pergolesi may be slightly uptempo, the vocal performances are, nonetheless, stunning. I have not listened closely to the Vivaldi offerings; I purchased this disc for the Pergolesi and am very pleased I did so.
This recording also comes with extensive liner notes in English and French. The notes provide extensive background on the pieces and the evolution of their treatment, as well as biographical notes on the conductor and performers and translations from the latin.

Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2003-01-23
What a wonderful CD. The music is awesome, proof that Vivaldi didn't write the same concerto 10,000 times. Words can't discribe how good Karina Gauvin is. Even if you are one of those people (and you know who you are) who is allergic to vocals in your classical music, this is a must buy. This will put a huge smile on your face and keep it there.
