4 out of 5 stars Straightforward Playing.......2007-03-27

First of all, this recording fills a badly needed void as there are very few recordings of the standard repertoire for brass quintet. Secondly, the playing is very good - what you would expect from top notch professional musicians. Lastly, and perhaps my only beef with the disc is with the interpretations that are given. They are very straightforward - lacking the risk taking and insight that would make this disc exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like it.......2006-05-02

I'm a professional trumpet player & educator. I've rehearsed & performed everything on this CD at least once, more likely three or four times. I've coached these tunes with student groups, and I've heard them in concerts. So I thought, "ho-hum, another brass quintet... ho-hum,another recording of the Ewald..." Then on the way to a gig my buddy insisted that I listen to the Center City Brass, and popped it in the dashboard. Within minutes, I was writhing on the floorboard, speaking in tongues. Every time I re-listen now, I am more and more astonished at the virtuosity and musicianship of these players. Their playing represents the most formidable sound and technique of the best-trained orchestral players in the world, and the polished phrasing of the ensemble playing is worthy of the world's finest string quartets. The playing is passionate too, ranging from uncompromisingly savage to heartbreakingly beautiful. And it's all captured in a sonically excellent recording. I'm requiring all my students to buy one!

5 out of 5 stars Best brass quintet CD I've ever heard........2003-01-21

The playing here is extraordinarily fine, and all of the
music chosen for the disc is first-rate. The recording
quality is of demonstration class. Really gorgeous sound.
Astonishingly good control of intonation, articulation,
and dynamics.

If you can spare [the money], do not hesitate to purchase
this CD. It's a lesson in the art of brass playing. If
you've ever performed with a brass quintet as I have, you
will appreciate what Center City Brass Quintet has achieved
here. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing..........2002-12-17

I almost fell out of my seat the first time I heard this album. The sound and quality the quintet puts out knocked my socks off. All of the music is extremely well-written and well-played, especially Dahl's Music for (six) Brass Instruments. The quintet is simply amazing. I definitely recommend this album for any brass-lovers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fine disc of beautiful music.......1999-11-01

I agree this is a great disc but it is not perfect. All the players are exceptional performers. The repertoire is rarely recorded and very fresh. Eric Ewazen's Colchester Fantasy has become a standard in the repertoire for the idiom. This recording lacks the finesse the American Brass Quintet exudes in their reading on Summit Records. The Tilson Thomas Street Song is fabulous on this disc. The work has previously been recorded by the Empire Brass Quintet. The Previn is forgettable, and the Bernstein is rather insignificant. DiLorenzo's feature for the group, Fire Dance, is very exciting. It is deceptive in its dificulty(i.e. it isn't as hard as it sounds). The group is spectacular and the recording is great. The group does tend to get brilliant at times. That could be atested to the fact that they are all orchestral musicians. Aside from their orchestral sound, I have few complaints about the disc. I would highly suggest their previous disc simply entitiled - Brass Quintets.

5 out of 5 stars Most Perfect Brass Quintet CD to date.......1998-11-17

The ensemble, sound, style and intonation of this fine group belie the fact that they live in other cities. Their harmonics stack up marvelously in the open 5th to end the first section of the MTT piece, one of an impressively strong set of selections. Having not been familiar with this group, I confess to having low expectations- that is until I heard the first cut, a tour-de-force by the quintet's first trumpeter, a fine composer. It now tops my large collection of brass music as perhaps the finest example of the genre put on disc to date. Having just completed a brass CD, I know how difficult the process is. These guys are truly terrific. -Michael Moore, Tuba and Artistic Dir., Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet President, Atlanta Brass Society, Inc.
