Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue; Falla: Nights in the Gardens of Spain; Franck: Symphonic Variations

Here's a nice collection--three pieces of music that have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with one another aside from the fact that they make a nicely contrasted program for continuous listening, should you be so inclined. Philippe Entremont was very popular in the '60s and early '70s, and his performances always combined good taste with a healthy keyboard technique. None of these pieces requires the last word in technical accomplishment, and he plays each of them extremely well. Eugene Ormandy was widely regarded as the finest concerto accompanist that ever lived, and he supports his partner with scrupulous care and lots of big, warm tone. --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars good CD.......2005-10-19

This is a good way to fill out your collection with these works. The recording quality is good -- occasionally favoring the piano soloists a bit too much. The piano is so closely recorded in fact that I frequently heard creaking noises that I suspect might have been the pianist's weight shifting on his bench! Recommended if you don't already have the Gershwin or Falla. The Faure was my favorite but it is less of an essential piece to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gershwin; Fantastic Falla, Franck and Faure.......2003-06-13

In the 1950s and 60s, CBS/Columbia (now Sony Classical) had the great fortune to have three of America's best orchestras and their conductors on its recording roster -- Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra. Nearly a half-century later, only Leonard Bernstein remains a name that even the non-classical music world knows well. But in the world of the compact disc, this is a wonderful thing, because while Leonard Bernstein analog stereo recordings sell at mid-price, classic performances by Ormandy and Szell are regulated to the budget line. Well, my friends there is justice in the world because the vast majority of these "budget line" recordings are simply amazing. This particular disc features the great pianist Philippe Entremont with Ormandy and the Philadelphians, and Charles Dutoit and the Philharmonia Orchestra. Entremont and Ormandy were quite a pair, and they produced a long list of first-rate recordings, including Piano Concertos by Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Grieg and Gershwin. This 1967 recording of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and the 1961 "Nights in the Gardens of Spain" by Falla easily join that illustrious list. This is the first CD I own that features an Entremont/Dutoit collaboration, and it is a partnership that nearly matches the one with Ormandy. Franck's "Symphonic Variations" and Faure's "Ballade for Piano and Orchestra," both recorded in 1981, are excellent performances. There are other great recordings of these works out there, but having all four of them on one disc is where the real bargain lies. Never did something of such high quality come at such a small price. Enjoy!
