I love these CDS . . what a brilliant idea to add a beat to the most popular classical songs of all time. It is great upbeat music that gets you going. I specifically use it for when I need a boost to get me going on housework. It get you in just the right mood to start working. My kids love it too.

MAC DAVIS-BABY DON'T GET HOOKED ON ME/STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES: This "two-fer" CD (plus bonus tracks, no less) combines a pair of the Lubbock, Texas songwriter/singer's best known albums, the title tracks of each representing two of his biggest hits. Amounting to a better retrospective than his official "Greatest Hits" (at least, after you separate the wheat from the chaff), the four tacked on cuts alone include the smug novelty singalong IT'S HARD TO BE HUMBLE (a pretty fair summary of Davis' often tongue in cheek composing style), country charter TEXAS IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR, and the autobiographical ROCK N' ROLL I GAVE YOU ALL THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE. All of these fine "Lost 45s" are nearly impossible to find nowadays. Among the twenty other songs here, you get the number one anti-commitment classic BABY DON'T GET HOOKED ON ME, the seductive slices NAUGHTY GIRL and ONE HELL OF A WOMAN, and the gospel-colored STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES. All make for guilty pleasure listening, even if there are sometimes long stretches of audio Nutri Sweet in between. When Davis writes a good'un (Kenny Rogers, Elvis, and Gallery all did fine by his SOMETHIN'S BURNIN', IN THE GHETTO, and I BELIEVE IN MUSIC respectively), everything is right in pop music circles. I suggest you do what I did---burn your own customized anthology from the dozen or so pop picks here, and leave that other album's worth of pablum for the elevators and dentist offices. RATING: FOUR HOOKS

I've been looking for "Stop and Smell the Roses" ever since my cassette tape bit the dust 3 years ago. All the songs I grew up to in a better quality. I've even tried to find MP3 downloads for these songs and couldn't! I'm so relieved I finally got what I've been searching so long for.

"Poor boy don't need 'lectronics to make no Rock 'n Roll...Poor boy got Boogie-Woogie born right in his soul..." and the lyrics (from "Poor Boy Boogie") goes to tell us that you'd only need sticks, spoons and friends to make good music. This was in the early 70's...when most of us young folks were listening to heavy electrified UNDERGROUND!...But (believe it or not) Mac Davis could, at that time, divert our attention from Henrix and Grand Funk Railroad to his kind of music....Good deep voice, catchy tunes and the lyrics made us feel that, well, we belonged! With the exemption of "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me" which is everybody's favourite...nice melody....but the words can be dangerous....just don't sing it to your sweetheart....! Get this CD! These songs will last for many years to come...good to listen to while drivin' too!

One of the best performers ever. A note for the person who wondered why "Convoy and Rhinestone Cowboy" are missing from the album. Convoy was done by C.W. McCall, and Rhinestone Cowboy was done by Glen Campbell. They shouldn't be on this one!

    I am honored to be the first one to review this album. I'm suprised no one has done it yet! This CD is AWESOME. I don't listen to Classical much but when I do this is one of the albums I choose over all the rest. If you are in doubt I'm here to tell ya it's worth the low price:)

    enjoyed them very much. (They are great background music for doing housework)

    I have been searching for copies on CD for a long time.

      This compilation Album represents the best that the Hooked on Classics series have to offer. THis is an excellent way to make Classical Music interesting to those who might think Classical Music is "boring".

      Louis Clark has arranged some of the most popular composers and their most popular works in a way that will keep toes tapping and hands clapping to the fast tempos while some of the slower tracks (Hooked on Romance) become warm melodies to the ear.

      As usual, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of londa, plays the arrangements with seeming ease and perfecton. The orcehstras ability to play these arrangements is more than just "playing along with a Rock beat" but, a wonderful demonstration of musical perfection.

      Louis Clark createtd the hooked on Classics world, with Albums 1 - 3 and has been followed by others who try to copy his recipe (Hooked on Classics 4 - Hooked on Baroque and Hooked on Classics 5)but never seem to capture the gleam of the original three albums.

      Take time to sit back, relax and let Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic Orcehstra take you on a Journey through the Classics with this wonderful compilation!

      Just like some other reviewer, I too was a kid when this album came out. I believe it was the first of a series of albums based on the same concept: big medleys where parts of classical music is sewed together with some kind of disco beat.

      Yeah, it sounds awful... almost a sin.

      But those who already love classical music are not the main target here. I was a kid then and knew nothing of classical music. And yet, these medleys really hooked me to the classics.

      It was only after that album that I started to think "wow, these guys [Beethoven, Bach, Rachmaninoff and others] really wrote wonderful music... let me hear more of them".

      Today, records like this sound horrible to me. But they had their function. In fact, for me, that's the only way to look at them: a very good source of introduction to classical music.

      This is easily one of the most offensive albums I've ever heard. It's one thing to dumb down classical music or only play selections of tracks with the biggest finales to win people over. I mean, take something like Fantasia...I have no problem with them taking shorter pieces of a whole to expose such beautiful and novel music to popular culture.

      However, this is just unfathomably bad. The drum machine used is basically a trumped up metronome. It sounds like something you would play to schoolkids teaching them at the age of seven about keeping a beat. It's dreadful. And the orchestral component is incredibly thin and overly dramatic. There is not a cheesier recording of any of these pieces in the library...I'm sure.

      There are countless compilations of well-known classical pieces out there - do yourself a favor and pick out one of those instead as an introduction to classical music, and avoid the pervasive My First Drum Machine insanity of this horrible attempt to popularize classical music.

      This cd is definitely not your average elevator or waiting room music. The music refuses to be tuned out or ignored as so often happens with classical music. It is engaging without being over-powering, playful and yet seriously classical at the same time. For classical music lovers this cd is a must hear!

      Sure, the beat is repeatative, but you have to like the way the music flows from one well known melody to another. If nothing else this may inspire you to find an actual recording of one of the pieces and hear it just to find out what the composer wrote. I like it still, after all these years.

      I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.

      I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.

      Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).

      So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.

      Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.
