Sergey Prokofiev: Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 44 / Symphony No. 4 in C major, Op. 47 (Original 1930 Version) - Neeme Järvi

Editorial Reviews

That these symphonies are not more famous than they are simply amazes me. Prokofiev understood the nature of symphonic writing, and after the dainty cuteness of Symphony 1, he was ready to make his own mark. The Symphony 3 (1929) begins with a brash sense of alarm, then becomes quieter, more operatic in nature. And the composer's weird clashing harmonies are throughout the piece. Two versions of the Symphony 4 (1940) exist. This is the original version, which is shorter than the latter 1940 version. Neeme Järvi and the SNO have recorded the entire series for Chandos, and these are the ones to have. --Paul Cook.

3 out of 5 stars RE: on Jeff's super review.......2004-06-22

Jeff Lipscomb's review is THE best review I've read on Prokofiev's symphonies on ANY web site. Masterly written. Jeff's mention of recordings I was not even aware of. I have the Anosov/Czech's 7th and agree, its even slightly better than the great Samosud/All Union. I had Rozh's 1,7 and 2,3, from the early 60's on Consonance, I found them "fair", prefer Kuchar to Rozh. I sure would love to find the Kond/Chicago and Kond/Concertgebouw on my fav Prok, the 3rd. I'll have to look for Mrvinsky on the 6th, but never been a big fan of Mrv. I like Kuchar alot in 2-7. The Jarvi are OK as a second set, HOWEVER I see some reviewer's are giving too many stars. ?? The Stok/USSR 5th should be a very interesting performance , but is rare. Jeff Thanks for the super review/FAIR review.

    EDIT
I see 5 of 13 have found at least something interesting in my review.
I guess the fact that I've heard the Samosud and Anosov (Rozhdestvensky's father) gives me some credence.
I realize that 13 folks have passed by my review, more than any other review of other recordings, tells me that many are seeking to find out which recording they should go with.
Having had all the Rozh/USSR on Consonance/2,3,1,7, Samosud's 7th, Anisov/Czech's 7th, Muti's 3,5 /Philidelphia, and knowing this Jarvi from several selections. the Kuchar offers not only the finest of all in my humble opinion, but also is easily avaliable, great sound, with Naxos' prices.
Though I do not like Kuchar's iron handed technique/attitudes (as I've heard) with the orch, as with Reiner, the results are there. IOW there is emotion in Kuchar's recordings, as opposed to Reiner's coldness.

    5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2003-10-22

A must for Prokofiev fans. Jarvi and RSNO do a marvelous job. All the performances are inspired and well played. This set is well worth the money. Great sound on these recordings. Chandos does it again! Buy this set of recordings and tell everyone you know about them.

    3 out of 5 stars A decent set.......2001-08-23

This set is worthwhile if you want a complete set of the symphonies. Only the 6th is perhaps a first recommendation when comparing individual symphonies, though. I will more quickly turn to Abbado or Muti for 3, Szell or Karajan for 5, and Previn or Malko for 7. The second is not one that is recorded often, for good reason. It has many fine moments that are, unfortunately, drowning in a sea of loud, unsubtle noise. Neither versions of 4 are particular favorites either. But if you want a complete set, this is as good as any. But I would recommend getting the best of them (3, 5, and 6) in individual performances.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music, playing, feeling and recording!.......2001-01-23

This is well worth the money!I listen to the set every week. 4 revised is magical. 3 is an all out asault from all sides! The rest are at worst very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Two Lesser Known Prokofiev Symphonies .......2006-03-29

Neeme Järvi has a penchant for the music of Prokofiev as is apparent in his generous catalogue of recorded works. He understands Prokofiev's eternal dichotomy between gorgeous melody and the attacking bitter and brassy irony that suffuses all of his works.

Symphony No. 3 is a tough piece because of the musical ideas contained within the entire work are form the vitriolic opera 'The Fiery Angel', an opera that is too seldom performed because of its demands on the vocalists as well as its dark theme. But Prokofiev managed to draw upon the many moments of the opera and from those created this truly original symphony. It is exciting, challenging, and ultimately gripping work.

The Symphony No. 4 was likewise extracted from another source, this time Prokofiev's ballet for Diaghilev 'The Prodigal Son'. The score is rich in melodic outpouring and contains some of Prokofiev's most soaring lines. Not uncommon for the times, Prokofiev eventually re-wrote the symphony in 1947, but on this recording Järvi conducts his Scottish National Orchestra in the original 1930 version. The recorded sound is superb and Järvi's manner of approach to both these great scores is uncannily on target. An excellent introduction to lesser-known Prokofiev symphonies. Grady Harp, March 06

Seriously, if you have never heard Symphony #3, you must purchase this disk. Stravinsky idolized Tchaikovsky's immense lyricism. When Prokofiev is at his best, the result is a chimera of the two (to me, the piece Le Baiser de la Fee that Stravinsky finished for Tchaikovsky sounds like Prokofiev). Symphony 3 is probably the best example of Prokofiev's immense genius in fusing these disparate elements. The first movement is centered around a dark, hypnotic circular theme that bursts out like an explosion at the start of the piece, fading rapidly into a more assuring subtheme which is quickly dismissed by quivering strings and then a long descent into madness which is capped in an outrageous conclusion to the first movement, followed by one of the most hauntingly beautiful second movements in all music.

As was noted elsewhere, Prokofiev poached this music from his opera 'The Fiery Angel' when, after 10 years, he was unable to get it staged. The opera is about a woman who keeps having visions and she can't tell if they are an angel or the devil. The music lives up to this lofty billing, alternately mixing the beatific and the infernal, until it ends in a mad, farcical romp. On the very short list of works you can't live without...

    5 out of 5 stars The Finest.......2001-11-16

Neeme Jarvi's grasp of Prokofiev's music is astounding. This CD is one of a collection on Chandos of all of Prokofiev's symphonies. First the recoding quality is Chandos which is second to none and worth every penny. Secondly both Orchestra and conducter are committed to this biting saterical sometimes brutal and sometimes gloriously beautiful work. The smashing opening bars propel you into a dark and somber world. The ending is even more shattering. In between is vintage melodic Prokofiev. Get this. Get them all if they are Chandos and Neeme Jarvi....

    5 out of 5 stars A Personal Reflection to Prokovief's Sym. No.3.......2001-09-24

I ordered this cd shortly before the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. I have since listened to the 3rd Symphony over and over. It seems to reflect so much of my own emotional turmoil following these horrific events. The crashing alarm of the openning, the soft quizzical lament of the ensueing theme, the brutal brassy vengeful march, the anxiety of the restlessly scurrying strings, the mystical other-worldly searching that also seems present in the first movement: all this makes this symphony one of the few pieces of music that I turn to in the face of these shattering assaults on peace and normalcy.

5 out of 5 stars six stars if they had them to give!.......2001-01-22

All of the positive writing above is right as far I am concerned. The 3rd is crazy, insanely beautiful. The man froze me in my chair in the 1st movement!(and it went that way to the end) Many composers seemed to have been great artist, this guy was a kind of musical magicman! The 4th revised is much more fluid and dramatic than the first 4th. It's got more of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear. You can get it with the 1st. symphony. Jarvi and the Scottish Royal are all one cold dream. Words to discribe #3- violent, brutal, ellegant, magical, dreamy, jazz, sinful etc etc! Caution: if you do not enjoy some atonalness or music with "many" unusual shifts to many different themes, this may not be your bag!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25

I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.

I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.

The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).

As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.

One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.

I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for classical collectors.......2004-05-13

I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.

    This boxset has 5 parts:

-Sonatas box: Instrumental and chamber music. 5 CDs including sonatas for violin(s), sonatas for piano, piano and cello, piano and flute. Music for childen, and a quintet (G minor)
-Concertos box: 4 CDs. Including concertos for violin(no1 and 2), for piano, symphony-concerto for cello.
    -Symphonies box: 4 CDs from sym No1 to sym no7. no4: Op.47 and Op.112
-Stage works and Films scores: 6 CDs. Romeo and Juliet, Peter and the wolf, Alexander Nevsky, Scythian Suite, The Prodigal Son, Cinderella, The love for three oranges...
    -War and Peace opera: 4CDs
-Bonus: Role music. Including piano pieces.

There is no question about the quality:
    -Sound: 5 stars
    -Performers technique: 5 stars
    -Boxes and color: 5 stars
    -Price: $7/CD is acceptable.

Finally, I would like to use Sviatoslav Prokofiev's words: "This Anniversary boxset is a most impressive testimony to the interest my father's music arouse among artists, orchestras and audiences alike."
