Corea Concerto [Live]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The resurgence of pianist Chick Corea in the 1990s seemingly knows no bounds, as is demonstrated by his Corea.Concerto. Blending Corea's thrilling regular jazz sextet, Origin, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, this disc is Corea's second journey into classical music, after The Mozart Sessions with conductor and vocalist Bobby McFerrin. But Corea.Concerto is Corea's first original symphonic work and it's a mightily impressive debut. The disc is split into two major pieces: a bombastic, new arrangement of Corea's classic "Spain," first recorded in 1972 with Return to Forever and here featuring lengthy showcases for the members of Origin, and Corea's new "Piano Concerto No. 1," modeled after Mozart's piano concertos and featuring the Philharmonic with Origin bassist Avishai Cohen and drummer Jeff Ballard. Of the two, "Spain" is perhaps more satisfying, only because it gives more room for the members of Origin to shine and because the unusual blend of jazz sextet and symphony orchestra is achieved here to a greater effect. There are moments in Spain's "Opening and Introduction" when Corea attains a wonderful fusion of Latin rhythms, big orchestral blocks of sound that recall composers like Edgar Varese and have a jazz harmonic sensibility. The "Piano Concerto" is a more strictly classical piece that wears its Mozart influence on its sleeve, with melodies spun back and forth between piano and orchestra. --Ezra Gale
From Jazziz
Chick Corea's opening piano chords on his original recording of "Spain" suggest an entire orchestration themselves. So, it's easy to hear how he could arrange his ideas for the london philharmonic, fleshing out his widely known Return to Forever tune. Stravinsky and Ravel strongly influence this arrangement, yet Corea keeps a spirit of improvisation embedded throughout. As on Corea's first CD for Sony Classical, with Bobby McFerrin, "The Mozart Sessions," this is jazz swimming in a classical... read more

Bobby McFerrin's signature falsetto envelops a poignant, wordless melody, embellished by piano flourishes that uncomfortably tow the line between classical decorum and Chick Corea's airy, modal jazz style. Suddenly the music segues into the opening of Mozart's D Minor Concerto. The A Major Concerto (K. 488) is similarly introduced. While the smooth, thick orchestral fabric suggests forces larger than a chamber aggregation, McFerrin clarifies important woodwind details (the elusive bassoon, for instance, in K. 488's slow movement) and infuses the outer movements with controlled brio. By contrast, Corea's Latin-tinged, improvised cadenzas (and overeager embellishments during solos and tuttis) lose their novelty over repeated hearings. Elsewhere, Corea's literal, dutiful phrasing smacks more of a talented student than a daring and vibrant pianist whose impact on jazz is unassailable. --Jed Distler

the one from the old audi commercial.......2006-05-07
If you're looking for the cool piece from the old Audi commercial, it's the first part of the 466 -- Allegro. Apparently you have to buy the whole piece to get it on iTunes. Very pretty.
not just a jazzy version of Mozart.......2006-04-14
While I have been a dedicated listener of jazz for over thirty years, my classical ear is still taking shape. I do not always know all of the composers but I do know what sounds fresh and evocative. That Bobby McFerrin sings little and is instead the musical director of these Mozart interpretations only adds to the respect I have for his professional accomplishments. That Chick Corea deftly plays these sonatas with an obvious jazz influence does not betray some of the finest music ever written. Sample this music first. If you choose to buy it, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have, even after my one hundredth listening.
What an awesome CD!.......2005-11-10
Mozart with a jazz twist - here and there. Chick does a beautiful job playing Mozart. He definitely makes the music his own, and his jazzy cadenzas are remarkable! Add the McFerrin preludes and you have something quite unique, a beautiful blend of jazz and classical music. Very enjoyable.
Couldn't be more disapointing...........2005-08-21
I wanted McFerrin singing Mozart but I got almost pure Mozart instead. Bobby had to be the main dish not a tiny apetizer. It is classical music CD with negligible traces of Corea's and McFerrin's jazz. Very weird!
The state of art!.......2005-05-03
Corea in formal tuxedo revealed once more his huge talent in both performings, specially in the 23 th Concert.
You will be surprised when you listen this outstanding version.

Chick Corea Live.......2001-04-26
Simply magnificent. Two of my favorite albums ever are Michel Colombier's "Wings" and Claus Ogerman's "Gate of Dreams". Now there's another one. Orchestration, structure, emotion, ....they're all there. I've listened to it 3-4 times and I know there are another half dozen listenings before it's all digested.
Inspired by Mozart?.......2000-10-12
Chick Corea is, without a doubt, one of the most inventive of all contemporary musicians. He never gives up on his quest to find new ways to express himself through music. This lead to what was, for me, one of the most unexpected releases of 1999.
The CD "Corea Concerto" actually contains two pieces, the first is a remarkable arrangement of "Spain" for jazz sextet and orchestra. "Spain" is, in my opinion, one of Corea's finest jazz compositions, and it works very well with an orchestra. However, I would hestitate to call it classical. It's jazz (very good jazz, mind you) with orchestra. Perhaps the only real problem with "Spain" is that it completely outshines the "Piano Concerto." Please don't hear me incorrectly, here. I think it's wonderful for musicians to branch out and try new things. As a musician myself, I don't like boxing myself in to one specific genre. I think Corea has real potential as a classical composer, as there are some marvelous sections in the "Concerto," but overall the piece is very average. The orchestration is, albeit lush, rather uncreative, and Corea quite often seems unsure of where he's trying to go and what he's going to do once he gets there. The piece flounders and spins, occasionally being beautiful and intrinsic, but more often than not being ordinary and easily forgettable. Perhaps the most perplexing this is, for me, that Corea states in the liner notes that the piece is inspired by Mozart. While I admit to not being the world's biggest Mozart fan (I prefer Bach myself), I don't hear any Mozart here at all. Just Chick trying to write a piano concerto. But let's get this straight. I'm glad Corea decided to experiment in classical music. I just hope he (1) cleans up the act and makes something really great out of it, or (2) gives up and gets back to making great jazz instead of mediocre classical.
The rating of 3 stars might be sort of harsh. "Spain" clearly deserves 4.5, maybe even 5, but it seems like the CD is mostly about the "Concerto," and that deserves 3. If I could, I would have given the CD 3.5 stars. Whatever. You get the point.
One week ago, live........2000-07-04
Caracas, Venezuela. Thursday june 22. A great evening for this ensemble: Avishai Cohen's creative ideas, Corea's masterful piano, Jeff Ballard's new quiet but assertive approach to jazz drums. The local musicians in the orchestra got words of praise and applause from Chick. But best of all, Corea keeps reinventing himself. And you know he is on the no-return track. Can all his new ideas be just right? Yes.
Corea Concerto is expansive.......2000-05-15
It's difficult to know what to expect from Chick Corea. This time he moves solidly into the world of classical music. His concerto has the energy and syntax of Jazz, but the dynamic range that only a symphony orchestra can produce. He makes the two work well together. His piece is dedicated to Mozart, but it pays homage to Aron Copeland's American West themes with it's surprising bursts of knee-slapping rhythm and melody.
A Must !.......2000-01-30
Well, Inicially (As always), I didn't understand this CD very much,(Chick is always changing...) but, now, it attracts me like no other Chick Corea of my 52 CHick Corea's personal Collection. It has kind of a magic sound, (Like that other one: Lyric Suite for Sextet) specially on the concerto. It's a true example of dedication, talent, and a deep knowledge of the XX century music. I feel glad that Chick could address this beautiful area of music, and continue the tradition of the greatest musicians of the XX century, like Rachmaninoff, Bartok, Shostakovich, and Stravinsky, Berg, etc... Definetely, it's a MUST !

Simply Breath-Taking.......2007-03-05
Being a harpist myself, I can truly admire Catrin Finch's talent, style and choice of music selections for her first album.
Some songs are truly a revelation for the harp as an instrument using New Age style accompaniment, while there are still pieces with a classical vibe.
Well Done!
full of energy worth savouring.......2004-12-13
The artist is able to deconstruct the traditional image of harp as an instument. The texture and the hue of the music is rich and full of lustre. very creative and versatile.
Versatile virtuoso outshines musically uneven material.......2004-02-01
There's a reason Charles, Prince of Wales, revived a long-dormant (since 1871) tradition and presented Catrin Finch a Royal Appointment as his harpist. At age 23 she is a remarkable talent, with pristine technique and a fluency in the languages of both classical and contemporary music.
If only the material on her debut disc were equal to her talent.
While Finch is extraordinary, the music is a mixed bag of modern jazz/pop tunes, re-tooled classical favorites, and several hit-and-miss arrangements by Finch's musical partner, composer Karl Jenkins.
It's all starts and stops, ups and downs. In the jazz/pop genre, Dave Grusin's infectious "Mountain Dance" and the relaxed groove of Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays' "James" are perfectly suited for harp, while Chick Corea's "Spain" just never catches fire. Among the contemporary, experimental compositions, Jenkins' minimalist but tuneful "Harpers Bizarre" is far more interesting than Steve Reich's "Third Movement from Electric Counterpoint" - a tedious ostinato that never develops into anything. In a more traditional vein, "Crossing the Stone," taken from Jenkins' double harp concerto, is a rich, lovely setting of a Welsh folk tune, but two other selections from the concerto - "Eternal Dream" and "Caf? Vamp Latino" - don't relate musically at all. And while Finch, unaccompanied, is flawless on Bach's "Prelude from Partita No. 3," her performance of Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" is marred by the decision to include some noisy Middle Eastern percussion, as is Debussy's "Clair de lune" by an intrusive, soporific voice-over.
On the upside again, Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria" and the Welsh lullaby "Suo Gan" team Finch nicely with solo voices (though countertenor Terrance Barber's vibrato is perhaps an acquired taste), and Jenkins' "Thingamujig" is a fun, lively jig.
Concluding the album, the first movement of Jenkins' "Palladio" (featured for years in TV commercials for DeBeers diamonds) in a dull dance remix has none of the energy of the original version for string quartet and is a totally gratuitous inclusion.
From Finch's liner-note comment that "I've never really been stuffy about classical music ... I'm open to everything, really," it's apparent that some tracks are an attempt to make a "classical" instrument more accessible to listeners of contemporary music. Again, Finch is terrific, but listeners would be better served by a recording of the harpist that displays her virtuosity in a single genre - whether classical, contemporary or experimental - instead of this hodgepodge.
Give the performer five stars, the material two, and look forward to hearing this talented young artist for many years to come.
A Towering Musical Achievement.......2003-10-29
While biographies disguised as reviews are tiresome, some background is in order, in this case. At the age of 23, Catrin Finch has been playing the harp for 18 years. She was appearing on British television and with major orchestras by the time she was 10, and was appointed the Royal Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales (a.k.a. Prince Charles) at the age of 20. Bottom line: This lady has more than enough credentials to be regarded as a major musical talent.
But does having a long list of credentials translate to making a great album? In this case, you bet it does. On "Crossing The Stone," Catrin Finch combines piles of technical expertise with surprising and even stunning musical choices. Sure, she covers classical music (such as Bach's 'Prelude from Partita #3' and Handel's 'The Arrival of The Queen of Sheba') brilliantly, but you'd expect that from an alumnus of The Royal College of Music. But would you expect to hear a piece by jazz pianist Dave Grusin done on the harp? How about music by guitarist Pat Metheny, or a Chick Corea composition?
Catrin Finch is an incredible talent, and she has created a beautiful, eclectic album that demands (and will receive) repeated listening. Unfortunately, it's also an album that you probably won't find in your local music store. This album has not received a lot of publicity, and I have yet to walk into a CD store and find it sitting on the shelf. Save yourself a lot of tedious shopping: buy it here and now.
Beautiful Harp Album.......2003-08-26
I first heard Catrin Finch on a free sample CD I received and when I listened to it, I couldn't believe that the instrument that she was playing was the harp! It was so vibrant and full of life. It felt like I had opened the windows and let the sun shine in. The harp is the world's oldest - and most difficult instrument, but in Ms. Finch's power it is sounds both contemporary effortlessly played. It is a wonderful buy for any appreciate of music, and the most electric harp album ever produced.
