Corey
Editorial Reviews

If you happened to be browsing through an old-fashioned record shop and came across this CD, you'd probably think it was a pop album. The cover shows a photo of the violinist, in blue jeans, and the single word "Corey." This is a hell of a way to present a violinist who studied for a decade with the legendary teacher Josef Gingold, and who plays this well. Not many of these wonderful Wieniawski showpieces are still heard very often, so it's a special treat to have a whole discful of them played with such flair and Romantic style. Corey Cerovsek is a very entertaining violinist who could turn out to be a great one; sister Katja does what little she has to do very well. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:
Strong.......2007-06-23
As a guy who grew up on a steady diet of Dokken, Ratt, etc. My eyes were opened up when I purchased Stone Sour's new offering. I had heard 'Sillyworld' on KBPI several weeks ago and at that point I thought I was listening to a "poor man's" Pink Floyd cover band-I wrote Stone Sour off. Then, a few days ago, I heard 'Made of Scars' and I was hooked! I love this cd. A great blend of heavy, aggressive fist pumping tunes (30/30-150, Come What(ever) May, Hell & Consequences) with some very poignent songs like Zzyzx, Through Glass, and yes-Silly World. I will never relinquish my 80's hair band roots but bands like Stone Sour, Godsmack, KoRn, Puddle of Mudd, and others are definitely opening up my eyes to fresh, great new music.
Corey Who?.......2007-05-20
I don't care who he is. He has talent, and lots of it. I thought "Through The Glass" was my first contact with this band, but I quickly found out that I was wrong. This CD was so good, and piqued my curiosity about this Taylor guy so much, that I have spent roughly $100 on the various "Corey Taylor Projects". I have yet to be disappointed.
Another solid disc from Corey Taylor and company.......2007-04-13
I believe their debut to be superior to this cd, which is much more accessible to the general public, but it still has it's share of heavy moments. "Through Glass" is a catchy cross-over hit, "30/30-150" is a heavy metal song similar to Slipknot, and all of the songs on here have something to offer. Missing is the raw energy of their debut. This one is much more calculated and simplified. "Sillyworld", their current single, may be the worst song they have written. I just don't get how they can make that a single. If you are a fan of hard rock with a heavier metal side, you'll like this cd. Corey is one of the most recognizable vocalists in heavy music, and I think what he lacks in range, he makes up for by creating very catchy hooks.
A Very Solid Follow-Up!!!.......2007-04-10
As good as 2002's Self-Titled debut was, It always sounded to me, a little too much like Slipknot....Especially Track 1. However that is not the case with 2006's "Come What(ever) May", this album shows Corey Taylor and the gang coming into their own. The only real similarity here is Taylor's voice, the rest is purely Stone Sour. This is very well one of the best new metal releases in quite awhile, there isn't a single bad song on it. The album starts with a bang (30/30-150) and ends in a classic rock ballad (Zzyzx Rd.) a song that has an almost Bob Seger sound at times...Yes, you read that corectly. It shows that these guys are finally stepping out the shadows of Slipknot and into their own.
The Future of Rock`n`Roll.......2007-03-25
With the release of 'Come What(ever) May' & a ton of sold out shows World-Wide including the infamous Family Values Tour with other Hard Rock greats Deftones & KoRn, It's not ranting to say Stone Sour is more than just a side project now. In fact several Slipknot fans are worried that the recent popularity may be the sign of Corey Taylor leaving the band to stay on as frontman of Stone Sour full-time, Doubtful but a def. possibility now.
My favorite tracks include the first single '30/30-150', The catchy and head bang worthy 'Your God' & of course the World-Wide hit 'Through Glass' featuring deep meaningful lyrics that anyone can find easy to sing-a-long with and relate to. But of all the album one song sticks out most at least in my case the ballad 'Zzyzx Rd.' the vocals by Corey are mezmerizing and the song structure is beyond the rest of this album with an almost 'Oldies' feel. I applaud them for being brave enough to write such meaningful songs and move aside from there Metal roots a bit.
Stone Sour has set the example of what it means to be a Rock`n`Roll group in todays age and has been opening doors between Rock & Metal since the release of there debut album. In my humble opinion Stone Sour are easily one of (if not the) best Hard Rock groups in the scene today. Thank You.

Good effort!.......2007-05-22
I have to admit that I never heard any other records of Corey Stevens, this is the first CD I ever bought. I read on the liner notes that (just to use the same words) "this music is dedicated to Albert King". As soon as I started to play the CD I had to check the cover once again... did I put an Albert King CD on by mistake? No, no it was the right one! Corey Stevens (at least on this record) sounds exactly the same as the great Albert: same voice, same guitar tone, same horns as on STAX productions! However, you cannot exactly say that Mr. Stevens is copying the great master. He has a personal style and, from my point of view, he is just paying his passionate tribute to his mentor. Talking about the music I have to say that for me this is a very enjoyable blues album, great selection of songs, excellent playing from all the musicians involved. But most of all I like a lot Mr. Stevens singing and guitar playing that I find very personal in the way he creates solo progressions. He may sound like Albert however Corey Stevens has undoubtedly his own personality and style. Surely I will give a try to his other records soon. 4 1/2 stars!
RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: " FINALLY! A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE, GREAT, ALBERT KING!".......2007-05-16
I first must admit, I had never heard of Corey Stevens, until I found this CD dedicated to my all-time favorite electric blues man, Albert King. Secondly, it's about "FREAKIN" time somebody dedicated some CD's to the late, great Albert King! There are plenty of Albert King classics out there, that people like "Jumping Joe" Bonamassa and others should "tributize"! Shaq "The King Of The World Blues Reviewer", wants to make sure "Shaq's, The King Of The World Blues Reviewer's" loyal fans, know that this review is based solely on, and limited to, this one CD! In no way, do I mean to imply, that I'm endorsing any other recordings of Corey Stevens. OK! Now back to this review. Corey falls short in "bending" the strings, the way the one and only Albert and Stevie Ray Vaughn did. But! There are some songs on here, that not only sound like Albert, but it makes you think; maybe Albert is still alive! "Cold Women With Warm Hearts", sounds exactly like Albert. To summarize; I applaud Corey for recognizing the great Albert King with this tribute CD. For long suffering, and lonely Albert fans, this is a must have. Note to Corey: "There are more of Albert's songs out there!" "How about getting some heavier strings, put more oomph in your hands, and release an "Albertville 2". P.S. Maybe Albert is still alive out there with Elvis and Tupac?
Utility Player.......2007-05-12
Corey Stevens is as versatile as they come. This Cd is a return to more traditional blues as opposed to his former recordings. He emulates many great players with precision, yet his voice can sound like Clapton or even Stevie Ray at times. This CD may disappoint those wanting to hear a more contemporary electric blues, but for any blues fan, this is a must have.
Decent Album.......2007-04-10
If you have always liked Corey Stevens like me you would say that you like this set, but it is still the same set of the same old thing. Nothing new here. It sounds like Corey is running out of new ideas and is walking thru each song. I like his first two albums the best but this one sounds uninspiring and kind of boring to me. He has a nice voice and is a good guitar player. If you like his music I suggest you get it, but there is nothing new here. It is kind of short--less than 45 min
Corey Stevens Has Successfully Brought Albert King Back From The Dead!.......2007-02-20
I wouldn't expect anything less from Bluesman Corey Stevens!

Album Description
Ascendancy, the group's second album and their first on Roadrunner Records, is filled with carefully crafted songs that surge with energy, passion and originality. Like their solid 2003 debut Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy is rooted in '80s and '90s thrash, recalling the glory days of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, and Testament. But the new disc doesn't stop there, incorporating aspects of melodic death metal and even prog-rock. Twin guitar harmonies and point/counterpoint dynamics abound, twisting around vocals that alternate from melodic and pained to caustic and full of rage. "We had so much more to work with this time," says guitarist and lead vocalist Matt Heafy of the Jason Suecof-produced disc. "I had great guitar sounds, Travis [Smith, drums] is playing like a machine, and the vocals are so much more multi-dimensional."
While the first album, lyrically, addressed romantic disillusionment and child abuse, this time the songs confront spousal abuse, suicide, depression, tyranny and freedom of speech. However, even at his most poignant, Heafy prefers expressing gut emotion to preaching. "I've found that when you have a negative aspect in your life, you can find so much negativity in other people's lives around you, and in the world. For me, it's good to write about the negativity to get some of it out of my system."
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good release, but didn't live up to the hype........2007-04-14
From all the buzz about these guys, I was expecting something totally revolutionary that made you think "Man, I guess I didn't know what metal was until now." It is not great. But it is above average. I think that they are a pretty young band that has plenty of time to come into their own. Lots of potential here. But bands like Killswitch Engage, who employ a style similar to Trivium, are head and shoulders above them yet. Still, I enjoyed half the songs on this disc, and if you're looking for something new, you could do much worse. I give this 3.5 stars.
Second release from one of metal's better outfits.......2007-03-25
When one looks over a metal bin at a music store, it's hard to stray from familiar territory, especially when you're 46 and nobody else your age checks out much of anything, period. Thus, your entertainment dollar is going to be somewhat experimental when you chunk down a $20 to try somebody out.
Trivium got the blessing, for what it's worth nowadays from Metallica, and in one magazine they (Trivium) paid their dues to Metallica's "Ride The Lightning", which is one of thrash's greatest moments, despite people's being pretty much sick of them by now.
I first bought "Ashes To Inferno" and thought it was a solid debut, and I consider "Ascendency" a sign that Trivium is indeed a metal band that is daring to stretch its constrictive creative boundaries. The sound is a cross of "Chaos AD" - era Sepultura and Pantera, with the guitars more crisp and intricate. The vocals? I'm a little up in the air about the jumping back and forth between gutteral croaking and more normal harmonies, although it does make the songs breathe somewhat easier.
What makes "Ascendancy" work without the track by track breakdown, is the guitar work - innovative and fresh in a style that doesn't welcome change with open arms. It's intelligent, has good socially conscious lyrics and has the passion to make it all work. I deduct one star until I make up my mind about those vocals.
Heavy Metal- TRIVIUM.......2007-03-20
BEST NEWER METAL BAND! AWESOME METAL CD! Necessary addition to any metal collection!
Cowers in comparison to titans Metallica and Megadeth, but they do rock........2007-03-14
I finally sat through a round of "Ascendancy" after hearing many good things, and I must say that I am impressed. However, there is no way Trivium could never live up to the glorious name of Megadeth. Metallica, maybe. But Megadeth? Pantera? I don't think so.
I'm not a kid, I just don't have my own Amazon account........2007-03-02
First off, if I could give this something lower than a 1, I would.
I find it funny that they've called themselves "The destroyers of false metal" when they infact are false metal, and quite crappy music.
Trivium are nothing short of Metallica rip-offs as everyone by now is quite obviously aware of. I also find it funny, that people who listen to lame metalcore like Trivium and Killswitch Engage make fun of emos while if you even look at a couple of the names of some of their songs, they scream what people are calling 'emo'. Dying in Your Arms.. Sound like what people call 'emo' much?
While I will admit their cover of Master of Puppets was decent (though not on this version.)
If you listen to any mainstream metalcore, one thing you must know is that a decent ammount of it is NOT metal (Like for an example: Norma Jean). As metalcore is part metal, and part hardcore. Usually the hardcore shadows the metal, making most not metal. Saddly, Trivium are close enough to be called metal, which IS a sad thing to say.
If you like this sorry excuse for a band, and most metalcore (although there ARE good metalcore bands out there, just most people who listen to it listen to crap like Trivum and Bullet for my Valentine), and if you listen to Nu-Metal (Which is a sub-genre of HARDROCK AND IS NOT METAL) you can not call yourself a 'metalhead'.
If you own this sorry excuse for a CD, you need to take it out of your collection, go to the nearest trashcan, and throw it in.

Good voice. Nice music. .......2006-01-25
I've never been a totally huge fan of Corey Harts, but all the music I've had of his in the past has been on cassette and I thought it would be nice to have my favourite songs of his on CD. On here is one of the best and most beautiful songs ever; Never Surrender. It's fantastic. There's also Sunglasses At Night (probably one of the songs he's known best for). His voice is a bit Bryan Adams-ish but he's not quite on the same par. Nevertheless, this is an excellent cd with a lot of older music that will bring back memories from the 80's.

This is an excellent CD. I only knew a couple of his songs, but listened to his other songs on a couple of streaming music programs and thought it was great, so I decided to buy the whole CD.
I Love This Selection of Corey's Music.......2005-03-20
I came to amazon to see if there was anything new from Corey, or
any other CD I wanted of his. I have his *Singles* on tape. and
need the CD. This Corey Hart/Singles has all of his great songs,
maybe minus one.
but after being here I can see, that I need to go ahead and get
the CD. It would be nice if he would come out with a new CD! I
would LOVE it I'm sure. Its just good rock and roll ballads!

NEVER SURRENDER..........2003-11-18
Corey Hart's SINGLES was supposed to bring his best tracks from this first 5 albums...it almost does it.
Among all the great tracks included here, we miss some...songs like "Angry young man", "Goin' home" and "Dancing with my mirror"(all from the 1986 release FIELDS OF FIRE), "Truth will set you free" (from 1988's YOUNG MAN RUNNING)or even "Hold on" (included on the Beverly Hills Cop 2 sdtk.)are missing.
On the brighter side, wonderful songs like "It ain't enough","In your soul", "Never surrender" are all here. The obvious "Sunglasses at night" is here too.
All in all, a great collection of singles and well-written pop music. If you don't know that much about Corey Hart's work, this is a good start. But, take an advice from this guy, go after the other tiltes...they are worth it...trust me!!!
And if you wanna check how his music has developed, look for his
ATTITUDE AND VIRTUE (1992), COREY HART (1997), nad most recently JADE (1998). You won't be disappointed.
Don't mess around with a guy in shades...oh no!.......2003-08-21
This 1992 Corey Hart compilation is the only one you need. Two others are available: The 1998 10 song "Best of" and 2002's "Classic Masters". All the songs from these two are available on "Singles" except for "Dancin' with my mirror" from his '86 album Fields of Fire. "Singles" also includes 4 tracks not on any other compilation: "Eurasian Eyes", "Don't take me to the racetrack", "Bang! (Starting Over), & "Spot you in a coal mine". The choice is obvious: "The Singles" is the definitive Corey Hart compilation.
Goodbye EMI deal.......2002-11-28
This collection of Corey also marks his ending with his former label.
The CD is a compilation of all (almost) his greatest hits off his first 5 albums with EMI.
Delated from the list are the singles ANGRY YOUNG MAN and DANCIN WITH MY MIRROR.
In return you get a remix version of SPOT YOU IN A COALMINE and the FOLLOW THE SUN version of his 1990 BANG album (the original appeared on YOUNG MAN RUNNING back in 1988).
No unreleased tracks or nice extras (the track cut for the BEVERLY HILLS COP 2 original soundtrack...sigh)
But if you are not a Corey fan this is definitely a good list of his best known works to start you with.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17
If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.
Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.
Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18
Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.
A treasury.......2005-11-06
As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

Album Description
In a world where the mentality seems to be "work less, yet earn more," Slipknot have done everything they can to work harder and earn what they deserve, much to the chagrin of their so-called peers, yet to the delight of their fans, known affectionately as the Maggots. The latest culmination of their efforts is Slipknot 9.0: Live, a bludgeoning live double CD of the past three album's worth of material that captures all of the noise, hatred, intensity, violence, pain, blood and infection that make the maggots swarm.
"Most of the people that are going to buy this record are core fans, and normally when they listen to an album, they say: 'Oh, this part is brutal, oh, this is bad-ass.' And they rewind over parts and sing along," Crahan explains. "But I think with this record, they're going to be very silent because I think they're going to be painting a picture of us live in their head as they hear it. You're used to seeing us live, but now you're hearing it live, so you're forced to paint the movie in your head, which creates a psychosis - that is what we are doing with rock and roll music."
The 24 recordings on 9.0: Live were made directly from the soundboard in countless cities and capture the immediacy and explosiveness of the Slipknot experience, an experience that took on a new life two years ago. In July of 2003, Slipknot convened in a dilapidated mansion in the Hollywood Hills. By January of 2004, they emerged with Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses, an album that would re-establish them as the premiere hard rock band in the world. And in March of 2004, they set out to remind the world of that by doing what they do best: taking it to the people live - a full-contact concert experience. The album contains blips from the nearly two years of brutal touring the band waded through, rejoicing, suffering, destroying, but most importantly reconnecting as a unit, a family, an unstoppable force that will never be reckoned with, never be duplicated, but always envied.

Razaak is dead once again.......2007-04-12
Before I got this cd, i only kno wthe songs from their first cd so of course they sounded better at first, and i couldnt wait to hear my two favourite songs, liberate and spit it out, which i didnt think would be very good on a live cd but i turned out wrong. Generally high scores go to Before i forget, Liberate, pulse of the Maggots, Three Nil, Skin Ticket, The heretic anthem, Duality, Spit it out, Wait and bleed and surfacing but of course the others all rock as well
worrying about what other people think........2006-09-29
If you like a certain artist it doesn't really matter what other people think. Do you ask for their advice at the drive-thru as well? Follow your heart. I love the originality of Slipknot. I have been a metal fan since '77. So much garbage comes and goes. The longevity of Slipknot will prove all the critics wrong. Cheers!
awesome stuff.......2006-07-31
for all those reviewers who gave this album one two or three stars really didn't listen to the album enough. When I got this live album I never really heard slipknot before so i played it and listened, i felt the same way as the one and two star reviewers but when i listened to it a month later after i had decided it wasn't good i put it back in my cd player and really loved after a couple of minutes! The reason it sounds so-called sloppy is becuase it isn't recorded but if you listen after a while it is music to your ears. but if you listen you can hear the correct melody in the singer even though his mask muffles his voice the guitars are awesome, the turn tables have a great effect on the music, the samplings adds great touches to it, and the drums sound better live! really the only thing I have to say about this album is sit, listen, and hang on for fricken life! By the way, enjoy the drum solo on disc one.
"Are you ready to have a friggin' good time?!".......2006-06-24
I'll get right to the point: I have rarely enjoyed a live album as much as this one since Pantera's "Official Live: 101 Proof" was released in 1997. I had seen Slipknot on tour prior to hearing "9.0 Live", and I was very impressed with their live show, but I had no idea this album would be just as good as being in the stadium with the band. But it is! Live albums sometimes have trouble capturing the great energy and sound quality of the band's live show, but that sure isn't a problem here. In fact, "9.0 Live" almost indisputably sounds fuller, heavier, darker, tighter, and louder than most of Slipknot's live albums (especially compared to their latest studio offering, 2004's "Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses"). These two discs are literally jam packed with superb, ferocious excitement. This album's building energy is so present, its almost tangible.
Furthermore, if you've ever had your doubts about Slipknot being good musicians and/or songwriters, you can now (and forever) lay those doubts to rest. The guitarists, Mick Thompson and James Root, thrash away at their instruments, playing riff after blazing riff, and drummer Joey Jordinson, who might be the most talented one in the group, plays very talented, almost punk-ish drum beats which drive the songs. Plus, one might think that having all nine band members playing at the same time would drown out somebody's playing, but it almost never does. Even the second drummer, Chris Fehn, gets his moment in the spotlight (as in "The Blister Exists" and "Before I Forget").
The only foreseeable downside to "9.0 Live" is that some fans may not be able to sit through the whole thing (it is two discs and darn close to being two hours long). But, to be fair, there is a fair share of banter between frontman Corey Taylor and the crowd. Plus, drummer Joey Jordinson does get one whole track to himself (track eleven on the first disc, "Drum Solo" is an interlude of sorts.)
Every single song on here is executed and performed absolutely perfectly. Some of the songs are even arguably better than the studio version. The first disc begins with a joking, British-sounding voice telling the audience (much to their dismay) "Slipknot will not be performing this evening." Guitarist Mick, however, then launches into a grinding main riff and the first song, "The Blister Exists", has begun. This is one of many inspiring songs here which is pulsating with intensity and exhilaration (other songs like this include "(sic)", "Disasterpiece", and "Eeyore.") The catchy songs ("Before I Forget", which features both guitarists pounding out churning, headbanging riffs, and the careening "Pulse Of The Maggots") remain catchy, and maybe even have slightly better hooks than the originals. Some other places on the first disc, like during track six (when Corey bellows "It's time for everyone to jump, come on!"), I could barely control myself from staying in my seat. That song also establishes a good dynamic, because Slipknot played a neck snapper like "Liberate", but then take things down a notch for a more restrained number, "Vermillion." Later on, "Purity" (which is actually a rarity which evolved from a Slipknot demo), allows the DJ (Sid Wilson) to shine, because it begins with some good, catchy scratches. "Eyeless" shows off the whole band's stellar musicianship and willingness to work as a whole. This song is very musically complex, as it begins with some more DJ scratching and boasts a terrific give-and-take between the double bass drumming and scorching riffs.
Next, for track eleven, Joey turns out a lengthy, multi-speed, polyrhythmic, everything-but-the kitchen-sink drum solo which is pretty darn amazing.
"The Heretic Anthem"--which begins with a chilling spoken word intro (of the song's chorus) before turning to heavy, churning riffs and swift, buzzsaw drumming--and an especially vicious rendition of "People=Sh - t" are the two main highlights on the second disc. But they aren't the only standouts: "Three Nil", "Everything Ends", and "Duality" are a couple of the other blistering tracks. Plus, "The Nameless", which has a great friction between the hard hitting guitars and two acoustic breakdowns, and the punching guitars and emotional, throat-straining yells on "Skin Ticket" (which is actually pulled off, here, quite well for a song Slipknot had never played in concert before), are notable, as well. And the very last song is "the international f - ckin' anthem" (which is what Corey calls "Surfacing").
One might think that, over the course of these twenty-four tracks, the novelty might wear off. But that isn't true, either! Simply put, "9.0 Live" is a fantastic live album from an absolutely great live band (and great band in general). Definitely buy this album if you're a Slipknot fan, pop it in your changer, and (as Corey says early on) be "ready to have a f - ckin' good time"!
This cd doesnt deserve soo many bad reviews!.......2006-06-23
Some people dont like this album. I can understand that, but why talk crap about it? About what that Slipknot fan said, "this cd is too sloppy to listen to", I dont really agree all the way with you buddy but i DO agree with you in some! I have to admit that Three Nil does sound sloppy because Joey sounds like he cant keep up with his drums, and it does sound annoying. To the perosn who gave them a 1 star review, ok dude, about them turntables, to you they may have gotten worn out back in '99, but it gives the band a different type of sound. Songs like Eyeless and Surfacing would not be the same without it! Yeah thats all i have to say to you guys, hope i didnt offend you or anything.
CD REVIEW:
This album aint at all that bad! Slipknot has a heavier sound when they perform live, cory's vocals are just as good as when he is in the studio recording. Songs like (Sic), Spit It Out, Surfacing, and others give you this pumped up feeling and just make you want to head bang. Alot of live cds are boring and dull, just listen to Linkin Park live in Texas, youll know what i mean, but this cd gives you the feel that you're actuallly there! Spit It Out contains a command from Cory to get on the ground and jump up with a giant crash of pure metal. If you've seen Disasterpieces you know what im talking about. Joey gets a little sloppy in the drums in Three Nil but still ok, gets a little annoying tho. Hope this helps!

Holy countercultural confluence! For the cause of fundraising for the defense of a trio of legally bound Arkansas headbangers--one of whom is currently on death row on the basis of hearsay testimony--Henry Rollins has resurrected the sacrosanct songs of his legendary former Los Angeles hardcore band Black Flag. Much as he first joined the popular Flag by jumping on stage and grabbing the microphone, Rollins here assigns lead vocals to a bewildering array of guests, including Iggy Pop, Dean Ween, Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Tom Araya of Slayer, Queens of the Stone Age, and Ice T. The Rollins Band convincingly serves as caustic backing band throughout. Protest music godfather Chuck D. of Public Enemy appears as well, though simply to introduce the album. Many of the singers, whether inspired by the cause itself or the muscular caliber of Black Flag's music, deliver the rebellious message with heartfelt intensity. Motorhead leader Lemmy's ripping version of "Thirsty and Miserable" is a stunning highlight, as is Hank Williams III's psychotic "No Values." Former Flag singers Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski bring their veteran intensity, and Rollins himself shouts "My War," "TV Party," "Black Coffee," "Annihilate This Week," "Slip It In," and the title track. (Flag guitarist-lyricist Greg Ginn is notably absent, though his trademark clear Lucite guitar joins the West Memphis Three defendants on the cover artwork.) The participating musicians' anger and frustration over the West Memphis Three case, which has been detailed in HBO's Paradise Lost documentaries, is well matched with the giant fury of this band. --Ian Christe

Good Music For A Bad Cause.......2007-03-07
Rise Above: 24 Black Flag Songs to Benefit the West Memphis Three is a case of good music being used to support a bad cause. The music, contributed by the likes of Henry Rollins and other leading musicians is pretty good on the whole. However, there is quite a bit of pro-West Memphis 3 stuff on this CD and all of the profits from sales of this CD goes to help legal efforts on behalf of the WM 3.
This would be a good thing if there was good reason to believe that the WM 3 really were framed for a crime that they commit. Problem is the pro-WM 3 material on this CD contains many factual errors and fails to make a persuasive case to believe in the innocence of the WM 3.
If you want to listen to this good music, then the thing to do is to look for it at your local public library, secondhand music shop or borrow it from a friend. Don't let your good money go to support a bad cause like the West Memphis 3.
Great Songs, Great Cause!.......2007-02-16
Black Flags is undeniably one of the greatest punk bands ever and it is great to hear artists sush as Hank Williams III pay tribute to this great band. Plus it gives attention to a great injustice. Help support the West Memphis 3!
Truth or complacency? The choice is yours........2005-01-23
Those who will enjoy this disc are people who have both an understanding of great music and a respect for the law. Those who do not care about either probably will not care for this. Certainly this is for fans of Black Flag, Henry Rollins, and all the artists compiled here. (Ryan Adams contributes a great version of "Nervous Breakdown" and Hank III does "No Values," which is simply incredible.)
This is not for fans of ignorance or complacency in any of its forms. Certainly NOT for fans who think Henry Rollins is just trying to "free convicted murderers." And certainly NOT for fans who think that people who read Stephen King books are all Satanic killers.
Watch the "Paradise Lost" HBO documentaries, read "Devil's Knot" and "Blood of Innocents" and form educated opinions. Don't impugn Rollins or any of these musicians for having higher standards for OUR legal system and wanting to make sure we have the truth. When three people are convicted on hearsay and circumstantial evidence and one is sentenced to death, you can expect people from all over the country to take notice and want to get involved, because some of us still believe in justice and the separation of church and state. Anything less is un-American.
This is Henry Rollins' attempt to raise money for the truth, whatever it may be. Rollins told one victim's family as much. If the WM3 are proven guilty, at least we will have more to rely on than hearsay and Satanic Panic (you know, like actual, concrete evidence, which has been absent from this case since the start). The phrase "innocent until proven guilty" simply does not apply to this case. The prosecution proved nothing, except that West Memphis, Arkansas is a place free-thinking people probably shouldn't visit. Pardon the rest of America for thinking Metallica CDs aren't quite enough to prove someone is a murderer.
This is a great effort on the part of all the musicians involved, and it proves that ignorance still has opposition in America.
English as a second language for Americans.......2004-05-31
(...) The WM3 were convicted of the crimes. This is true. They were convicted based on hearsay and circumstantial evidence, not to mention a healthy dose of christian (ugh) fundamentalism. The truth is out there, but the ignorant sit in their churches and ignore it because it is easier to do.
This a compact disc full of MUSIC, however, and that is the real point here. You can't get much better than this with Henry Rollins being joined by Black Flag alums like Chuck Dukowski and Keith Morris, as well as Hank Williams III (the best REAL country musician working today), Lemmy from Motorhead, Exene from X, Ryan Adams, Tom from Slayer, Nick from Mondo Generator, and plenty more. The music is all provided by Mother Superior, a terriffic caustic rock trio with plenty of CDs of their own out there. They are best known as the Rollins Band, mach II, of course. They became his backing band a few years ago, although this is no longer the case. Henry is set to reveal a new band soon. They tear it up here, and the guitar sound is nearly perfect since the Dan Armstrong guitar donated to the cause was used for the recording, getting close to that classic Greg Ginn sound.
Black Flag are one of the ten most important bands in the history of music, and these songs should not be missed. Check this disc out, then check out some of the original releases for a real lesson in rock and roll.
And check out the Paradise Lost films for a lesson in how easily the US court system can break down when it is allowed to be placed in the hands of ignorant rednecks who don't understand that church and state are required BY LAW to remain separate and distinct.
If the victims in this case were my family, I would want the real killer or killers to be found. I would not want to find the nearest scapegoat and ruin that person (or in this case persons) life. Punishing scapegoats is what the nazis did, isn't it?
a testament to the surviving power of music.......2003-12-24
I had never heard of the west memphis three case until this benifit CD came out. It wasn't until recently that I bought the CD, and ever since I've purchased it, I've been blown away by the intensity and quality. I think it's a testament to the still surviving power of music, and especially Black Flag style punk rock that so much talent has come together for such a controversial but noble cause. If you're a Black Flag, Rollins Band, Henry Rollins, etc., fan, buy this CD. If you're not a rock fan, at least check out the case, or at least how it's laid out by the CD insert. Without voices like Rollins, there will never be hope for justice in America.

This singer-guitarist, discovered on the streets of New Orleans, has grown immensely since he emerged as the great black hope of acoustic blues with 1994's exceptional Between Midnight and Day. The electric Downhome Sophisticate is an often-superb sequel to his eclectic 1999 catalog of African American styles, Greens from the Garden--sprawling, but sparked by topical songwriting and Harris's raw-toned, Delta-fueled guitar and full-bodied singing. Harris infuses traditional blues with new blood, often by combining his sources. He tattoos an African vocal melody and guitar rhythm to a Mississippi fife-and-drum beat in the riveting antiwar number, "Fire," which is further stoked by psychedelic slide guitar. His 5x5 Band pump the traditional numbers "Don't Let the Devil Ride" and "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning" by giving Harris's sleazy bottleneck playing and raw howl a rock & roll bottom. "Santoro" and the title number are the best blues-hip-hop blends since Arrested Development's searing "Tennessee." There's also a smart samba excursion. But some experiments, like the funky "Frankie Doris" and the Fred McDowell acid trip "Money on My Mind," don't gel, and several instrumentals unspool aimlessly. Nonetheless, Harris is trying to transform one of the most idiom-bound genres into something personal and utterly modern. And that marks him as one of the music's most courageous contemporary artists. --Ted Drozdowski

a grower.......2006-08-12
I started out a bit indifferent to this record as it cost me 1 euro and I hardly ever played it. Its been playing today and its great. There 's some seriously great music on this disc. Tracks 5 to 9 for starters are all terrific.
The blues goes back to mother Africa.......2006-04-05
Astonishing....!.......2005-03-23
I first heard Corey Harris though my subscription to InRadio CDs (which are worth their weight in gold, check them out at inradio.com)... was blown away by the track Downhome Sophisticate and had to check out the full album. Usually it's the case that I love a track, but the album and the rest of the offerings are lackluster.... Let me tell you this is not the case here! This album blew me the heck out of the water.... I see another reviewer complains he wanders "more than a blues musician". Duh. What's so wildly exciting about Mr Harris' work is how vibrant, alive, and evolving his work is... Yes, he seems to grab hungrily from influences of music spanning decades... and he does it with chops and aplomb.
Buy some of his other disks and you will be similarly impressed. None are alike, but all show a love of music and an intelligence that far exceeds anything else I am aware of in music at the moment.... Or anything else I have encountered! Greens From the Garden for example... definitely rootsy... unapologetically so, but the spin he puts on it - wow. He is not a HISTORIAN, far beyond that. His music is an education.... and a fun, thought-provoking and exciting one at that. Exciting exciting exciting. Do yourself a favor and buy this disk!
Generic Roots Mix.......2004-11-20
After reading about Corey Harris, "Downhome Sophisticate" was my introduction to him. Harris, who was raised in Denver and spent time in Cameroon in Africa and New Orleans, offers a mixture of sounds and cultural flavors in his music. "Downhome Sophisticate" was highly rated, but has not resonated for me. The musicianship is crisp, but the songs don't stick with you. For example, the track "Chinook" is aimless guitar noodling whose inclusion is puzzling. "Money on My Mind" has a nice bass workout and some rocking fuzz-tone guitar that makes it pleasant. "Capitaine" is a soft acoustic guitar piece that is sweet, but not remarkable. "Santoro" was billed as the airplay track. While it has a nice loping beat and some excellent vocals, the music seems off-kilter and lyrically its serious theme about racial extermination isn't really conveyed by the music. "Fire" gets a nice groove going that sounds like nouveau Taj Mahal. My favorite track is "BB" with its barrelhouse piano and its rock-out lead guitar. Overall, "Downhome Sophisticate" fails to make much of an impression. It's nice, but not one that calls to be put in the CD player. Taxi.
Album Wanders More Than A Blues Musician.......2004-01-10
Having prepared myself for the masterful work of Corey Harris I must say this album came as a big disappointment. The songs wander through different genres with no feeling or purpose. Couple this with the engingeering, such that the volumes shift up & down from song to song and the result is a frustrating experience. Not really sure what Corey's intentions are, but after listening to the fake Jamaican accent on "Sista Rose", well....I pulled the CD out and resolved to sell it on eBay.

Performing the old standard "Frankie and Johnnie" with an acoustic guitar is hardly a radical step in blues, but this young singer-songwriter is much more than a revivalist. Using tuba accompaniment on the opening "High Fever Blues" and covering obscurities like Memphis Minnie's "Bumble Bee Blues," the Denver-born Harris finds new spirit in traditional blues on his second album. He has the sort of effortless bluesman's voice that gave forebears Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, and Muddy Waters their depth and spirit, so we can feel the worry in "Mama Got Worried" and the fear in "If You Leave Me." --Steve Knopper

Corey has a wonderful untarnished raw quality. Not polished, but genuine and enjoyable. First four songs were the best, but the rmainder of the CD was unremarkable and indistinguishable. VEry much enjoyed those first four songs!!!
Acoustic Blues Never Done Better.......2002-02-03

If you enjoy acoustic blues or would like to hear it done with a slightly original flavor, this CD MUST be in your collection.

There is so much more to this album than you can hear in the little snippits online. If you want Blues, this is your CD.
A wonderful thing to stumble upon........1998-10-26
As I sat in traffic waiting to get into Jazzfest, whose picture was on the front of the paper, Corey Harris. He was Playing the same day and time as James Taylor so I knew I had to figure out what all the noise was about. Once you listen to this CD you will know why me and about 2000 other people stood out in the driving rain to listen to someone who looked 30 and sounded 80. I have found no better acoustic blues player in the last few years. What ever you pay for this CD will be worth the money.
It doesn't get any better than this........1998-08-24
Corey Harris and Guy Davis OWN this genre. This disc surpasses his earlier effort. What else does this supertalent young man have in store for us?
