If you liked Morimur, the intellectual examination of the so-called "hidden" chorales in Bach's Chaconne, then you'll buy the premise behind this CD as well. It purports to examine "connections and musical/spiritual affinities between Bach and Anton Webern," but it's probably a good idea to forget that, since it's close to incomprehensible, and the performances here are stunning enough not to be affected by a gimmick. Indeed, the Hilliard's one-voice-to-a-part reading of Bach's Cantata No. 4 is about as gorgeous, moving, and transparent a performance as you'll ever hear. Webern's arrangement of the fugue for six voices from Bach's Musical Offering (recorded at the start and end of the CD) is also beautifully played, this time by the Münchener Kammerorchester, and it is, indeed, a wonderful, rich arrangement. Two early works by Webern serve as part of the contents of the sandwich whose bread is the Musical Offering: the 1905 String Quartet, here orchestrated by Poppen, and Five Movements for String Quartet, Op. 5, which Webern himself orchestrated in 1930. The booklet explains something about life and death and the relationship between the key-structures of all the works here; if there had been no notes at all this would still be a beautiful CD. Music this well-played needs no excuse or relationship to anything, and the notes--and premise--are little more than frustrating. --Robert Levine

An intriguing hint.......2003-02-14
Harmonia Mundi has long been recognized as a leader in Baroque-era recordings, and this sampler, from the music recorded for the Harmonia Mundi Bach Edition affirms that stature. Teldec and Hanssler, among others, also offered complete recordings of Bach's music, but in many respects Harmonia Mundi's two dozen or so discs of selected music surpasses those complete works. HM has taken the familiar "historically accurate" approach to performance, and the results are lovely.
There are arguments over how to divide Bach's music, but for the purposes of argument let's say the music can be categorized as: Sacred and Secular Vocal (cantatas and Masses); Keyboard (including the organ); Chamber; and Orchestral music. Any attempt to present a well-tempered sampler of Bach's work will have to be judged according to it's skill with each area. HM is matchless in it's presentation of the Cantatas; the work of Rene Jacobs and his RIAS Kammerchor is mellifluous and dramatic, while Philippe Herrewheghe's Passions are extraordinary. Lionel Rogg presents what are, arguably, some of the finest interpretations of Bach's Organ Music, and Davitt Moroney--a keyboardist with wide experience with and knowlege of the Baroque era--performs flawlessly on the harpsichord. Other highlights: Jaap ter Linden's work is impeccable, and the incomparable Andrew Manze shines. After listening to this selection, the trick will be to find the CD's from which this sampler was drawn--not an easy task, believe me.
Eterno Bach.......2000-09-02
Simplemente Bach.
