Arcadia
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Countertenor Andreas Scholl's new CD is devoted to little-known, late-17th- and early-18th-century cantatas whose subject matter is Arcadia, a real region in Greece, but more frequently evoked as an idyllic place filled with innocent, simple shepherds and shepherdesses. Scholl employs a more operatic tone and attitude than we're accustomed to from countertenors. Not only does he use vibrato and "lean" on the voice, but he dips down, as in the final moments of a cantata by Marcello, into a deep, dark baritone range. The effect is dramatic and apt. Elsewhere his tone is just gorgeous and always expressive, he pays attention to the text of these works and captures the theatrical moment in each. The last movement of a work by Francesco Gasparini is excitingly acrobatic. The Accademia Byzantina is a remarkable "backup" group and they get to play some purely orchestral works as well. This disc is a knockout; enjoy it. --Robert Levine

Top ten EVER.......2006-12-04
what I mean is, if I'm ever to pack just 10 records to listen to for the rest of my life, this one will surely be in that top ten. Most likely in first 3 positions :)
I loved it when it was shiny new, I still love it now, some 20 years after.
DD with a twist!.......2006-07-07
This is a unique album to say the least! If you prefer the lower voice of Simon, then this is a good album for you! Simply wonderful!
Only for the Fans.......2006-05-09
Duran Duran are great, whether as a 5-piece or a 3-piece. I bought this CD out of nostagia as I had the original vinyl version way back when CD's didn't exist. Arcadia were a Duran spin-off where Simon,Nick and Roger did this album and Andy and John went on to form The Power Station. The songs on this album do not come near the quality of Duran Duran and are at best B-Sides...The singles at the time did not sell well and the album received luke-warm reviews...Nothing has changed in 20years and the album still feels like a non-event...Stick to the Duran albums !!!
Arguably the best album of the 80s .......2006-03-04
Being a Duran Duran fan I bought this album the moment it came out. My jaw hit the floor after the first listen. I couldn't believe how good this album was. I played it till my tape wore out and bought it again. Now I have a rare CD version of it and have digital copies of it safely stored on my computer and backup system. Do yourself a favour and get a copy, you will not be disappointed. Even after all these years I hear new hidden sounds in all the tracks. Simply splendid music.
A nice album from the eighties.......2006-02-28
Been listening to these songs since 1985. It is the Duran's spin-off who created this little miracle and, as all good things, they lasted just once.
I loved most "The Miracle", though "Election Day" and "El Diablo" are very good too. But the whole LP (oops, CD !) sounds real good.

I own several CDs in this series and this one, unfortunately is the one that comes off the shelf the least. Even since loading the contents up MP3 style into my computer and iPod only a few get played. Only a select few truly sound like the alternative radio I grew up with in the 80s.

Album Description
In 1985 members of Duran Duran took a hiatus from their hectic career to produce two very different bands and albums, the first being Arcadia comprised of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor, the second being the guitar driven rock of the Power Station with John and Andy Taylor (along with Robert Palmer and Tony Thompson ). Arcadia, created between the Arena and Notorious albums, it was originally going to be a project of "remakes" much like Duran Duran's 1996 release Thank You. What it became was a much more eloquent version of Duranie synth pop. This album gained recognition from the sheer Duran connection, however, it featured some of the most stylishly written pop tunes and produced four singles. EMI. 1998.
Customer Reviews:
Must have for any Duran fan.......2007-03-17
Amazing. Perhaps the best Duran-related album qua album, i.e. an album as an entire work of art with songs relating wonderfully to one another and moods that play out over the entire album as opposed to albums that are not seriously affected when heard with the random play button.
Simon's lyrics are at their most poetic. The influence of some of his favorite poets is evident in songs like "Missing" (Richard Middleton's "On A Dead Child"), but his own mastery of verse shines as well. In an interview, Simon said this album marked the development of songwriting that worked with the strengths of his voice, and it shows. Roger's drumming is fascinating, setting up perfect beats yet remaining unpredictable. If you listen to the album a thousand times, you will hear something different from Nick each time.
Guest artists, including Sting and Grace Jones, can be heard clearly and add to the richness of the album. All the songs are well crafted; no filler. "So Red The Rose" epitomizes the literate, artistic and poetic side of 80s Britpop.

Album Description
The works recorded here illustrate Buxtehude's masterful command of the huge variety of styles that characterized the sacred cantata in Germany during the seventeenth century. Each begins with an instrumental passage, and sung text is interspersed with instrumental responses, sometimes in strophic form. In the larger cantatas for all three voices, the music allows for the maximum of contrast, whereas the four solo cantatas give a more intimate expression of Buxtehude's craft. Into the latter category falls the extremely virtuosic Jubilate Domino, one of Buxtehude's best-known cantatas.
Customer Reviews:
Exquisite CD.......2006-04-28
The two previous reviewers did a wonderful job which I won't even attempt topping as it would be impossible. But I must say that I agreed completely that Matthew White is superb, particularly on this disk. He shines on "Jesu meine Freud und Lust", I play it over and over... its just a masterpiece and I never really remember what it means in English and it doesn't matter, I love it.
Excellent and promising recording.......2005-08-07
Just a short review from me.
This recording is superb and the singing is very fine, indeed. The countertenor, Matthew White, is new to me and he has a very powerful and rich voice. I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. The cantatas presented here features voices, strings and basso continuo. None of the larger scaled cantatas with clarini, timpani, cornetti, tromboni and fagotti by Buxtehude are featured. However, we have a very beautiful collection of cantatas for voice(s) and small string instrumental groups. The works are sublime.
Many may already know the Jubilate Domino, BuxWV 64 from other recordings. Matthew White's interpretation is a very contender.
The Aradia Ensemble goes from strength to strength - last year they gave us a fine rendition of Rameau's Castor et Pollux and more recently they have made one of the most delightful CDs of 2005 - the 8 Symphonies of William Boyce (also on NAXOS). This Buxtehude CD will reinforce their reputation as one of the Baroque music groups that is really making entertaining, expressive, stylish, colourful and wonderful recordings these days.
Impressive? You betcha!
Buxtehude Cantatas in Sparkling Performances.......2004-12-22
The Aradia Ensemble has become one of Canada's, and the world's, best baroque groups. They have now recorded more than a dozen CDs on the Naxos label. This is, as far as I know, their first go at the music of Dietrich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707) but one hopes it won't be their last. This CD contains six sacred cantatas, all for solo singers or small vocal ensembles accompanied by small instrumental group (including at times baroque violins, viola, cello, viola da gamba, violone, theorbo and positif organ) all led by Kevin Mallon. The styles vary according to the forces called for. All have instrumental introductions, the complexity of which is determined by the form of the subsequent text and its treatment for voices and instruments. Most familiar is 'Jubilate Domino' sung with laserlike intonation and sweet tone by countertenor Matthew White. This 9-minute hymn of praise begins with a long string/organ introduction that gives us materials that are then used in the florid sung line. The form is semi-strophic, with solo instrumental intermezzi between the verses. White's solo singing is also heard in 'Jesu, meine Freud und Lust,' and 'Wenn ich, Herr Jesu, habe dich' as well as in the three cantatas that call for the singing of all three soloists. He is clearly the star of this issue and one predicts a big career for him.
Katherine Hill, a clear-voiced soprano of the Emma Kirkby stripe, is heard in another solo cantata, 'Sicut Moses' ('As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up'). The three soloists (including bass Paul Grindlay) are heard together in three other cantatas, 'Was frag' ich nach der Welt, 'In te, Domine, speravi,' and the dramatic 9-minute 'Wie schmeckt es so lieblich und wohl' ('How lovely and good the saviour') with its introduction and instrumental ritornelli, passages for combined voices as well as those for each of the soloists. This is a virtuoso work, calling for exciting (and expertly done) fioriture from the singers and solo playing from the instrumentalists.
The CD also contains the familiar Passacaglia in D minor, BuxWV 161 (originally for organ) arranged by Mallon for strings. I prefer it on the organ, but it is nonetheless an effective transcription. (It might be added that pitch on this CD seems to be pretty close to modern concert A=440, not radically lowered as it so often is in baroque recordings.) Sound is clean and lifelike.

If you need to transform a negative mood into a joyful frolic, enjoy this jovial anthology of top tunes from the 17th century . These exquisitely executed pieces magically transport you to a 300-year old musical event, with an irresistible and beguiling puckishness. The real sensation is soprano Custer LaRue-- quel nom!--who appeallingly dissolves the borders between classical, folk and pop through her heartfelt phrasing and everywoman tone. With musical aplomb, a well-focused sound and teasing vibrato, she charmingly communicates comprehensibly and directly the stories of another universe. This thoroughly enjoyable musical experience is a must have for all types of music lovers. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
Fun, frolicsome and utterly delightful!.......2002-11-29
The six member Baltimore Consort combines voice, wooden flute, recorder, bagpipes, rebec, lute, viols, cittern and Baroque guitar into a "broken consort" (a group of instruments that are not all the same kind)(obviously) to whip up spirited improvisations of popular Renaissance ballads and dances from England. A "Playford tune" is one that was published by John Playford in 1651 in his musical anthology, "The English Dancing Master". What is particularly wonderful to those familiar with English Country Dancing is to hear soprano Custer La Rue sing some of the ballads related to favorite dance tunes. Especially fun are "The French Report", "The Joviall Broome Man", "The Famous Ratketcher", and "The Beautiful Shepherdess of Arcadia". If you like these ballads, you may also enjoy the Baltimore Consort's "The Art of the Bawdy Song", with guest singers the Merry Companions, as well as the Toronto Consort's album "Mariners and Milkmaids: Ballads and Dances from 17th-Century England".
Hurrah for CLR.......2002-06-10
a trip to Killburn
I am crazy about Custer LaRue, and the Baltimore Consort. I am not crazy about jazz. If I wanted to hear jazz, I would buy a jazz CD. Reasonable? I have never particularly desired to hear what a cittern or lute sound like in a jam session. In track 9, unfortunately the title song, I can do without the jamming.
But don't let that stop you from enjoying this CD.
playful.......2000-06-14
This collection features some of the most playful songs that the Baltimore Consort have ever recorded. These tunes, published by John Playford in 1651, are like a greatest hits collection from 17th century England. All of these tunes are entertaining. Some of my favorites are: Beggar Boy, A Scots Rant, and The Famous Ratcatcher-featuring typically brilliant singing by Custer LaRue (she is the queen of this kind of music). This is another great album by the Baltimore Consort. Buy it.

William Boyce.......2006-08-21
William Boyce is a comparatively unknown composer, but one who merits greater recognition. He combines a wide ranging capability for orchestration, for innovative rhythms and for delightful melodies. Overshadowed by Bach, a youngerr contemporary, Boyce is a worthwhile addition to any serious collection
Fresh, clear, colourful and stylish.......2005-08-06
This recording is excellent and the Aradia Ensemble just seems to get better and better with every recording. This recording presents us with eight symphonies by William Boyce. These works have a very agreeable late Baroque flavour to them.
Boyce was not quite in the same league as Handel, Haydn or Rameau, but his music is, nonetheless, very beguiling and attractive. A solo for the flute in the first symphony could have almost been written by Rameau.
The Aradia Ensemble plays Boyce's works with great ease and skill. I have listened to this CD many times since I bought it two weeks ago. It makes for very enjoyable listening.

One of the best sound tracks one could have.......2007-04-13
I finally played the game when it was released on gamecube. And what can I say? From the moment I first played down to the ending credits it was catchy, entertaining, and most of all I didn't turn down the volume once. There have been so many video games that after the first couple of fights I turned off the volume. So not only can you listen to it playing the game, but also why you drive down the street.
Quite simply a masterpiece..........2006-07-28
This is a composition unlike anything I've ever heard. The instruments it uses are basic enough... strings, horns. A tuba. A pennywhistle. But the genius behind this work cannot be easily described. These two Japanese composers have created a musical score that makes you feel like you are in the British Navy or an Italian pirate ship. The battle music is incredible.
A friendly warning : do not listen to this album in your car while driving. You'll want to unleash the cannons...

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-19
Much has already been said by other reviewers as to the background of this recording. I'd like to simply say that it was much more to my liking than the previous CD from 1999 "A Musical Banquet". On this line-up of selections Andreas has chosen very well for his vocal abilities which are considerable. As long as he stays away from Lute Songs and the like (especially if they are in English) I'm more than pleased with his voice. This is a very enjoyable disc including many less familiar composers such as Gasparini, Marcello and Pasquini. But then it includes the familiar like Corelli and Scarlatti.Although Scholl tends to the less dramatic renditions it didn't bother me as it would if he were singing Handel. The one Scholl album I would put above this one is his "German Baroque Songs".
Extraordinary Album!.......2004-07-15
Andreas Scholl continues to amaze his growing public. Not only is his voice now even more facile and beautiful, his sense of programming is reaching that level held by the singers who not only have a gorgeous instrument but also attach it to an intellect and respect for the composers of the past. How fortunate we are to live in a period when countertenors are popular and plentiful! David Daniels, Brian Asawa, Bejan Mehta etc for some reason do not present a feeling of competition but a celebration for opening opportunities for the countertenor repertoire.
In this collection of 'motets' or pre-operas the subject matter deals with that Elysian Grove or Eden that is 'Arcadia'. Though we know the works of Scarlatti and Corelli in other idioms, we here have a smattering of works that include composers as Gasparini, Marcello, Pasquini, and Bencini - all from the 17th and 18th centuries. The works are consistently fine, aided in no small part by the brilliant musicianship and vocal finesse of Scholl in collaboration with the Accademia Bizantina directed by Ottavio Dantone. Each work sets a mood and each work has its thrilling moments. But there is never a suggestion of sameness one might expect from this repertoire, and that is amazing on repeated listenings! No drolling background muzak here: this is Arcadian music at its finest. Andreas Scholl is clearly one of the major performers of the day! Highly Recommended.
Beautiful music and excellent teamwork.......2004-01-16
The countertenor voice leaves much space to hear in it, whatever you want to project into it.....From "strange effects" to angelic voices,androgyny....you name it.
Good news is that the new breed of countertenors like Daniels,Asawa and Scholl evolved from the "angelic voice" projection which,in all its beauty, gets soon pretty boring,to full grown singers. They try to approach each piece they sing individually, giving meaning to each word, using their voice with all its colors, rather than presenting "unreflected beauty".
The more operatic approach chosen by Scholl in this recording might turn down some "early music" fans who prefer the Harmonia Mundi recordings, where the young Andreas Scholl relies more on the beauty of his phrasings and his voice, than on truly "dramatic" singing. The guy grew up and the newly-gained opera experience certainly shows in this recording. The long and complex recitatives are skillfully executed with every bit of drama and "affetto" they need. The continuo group led by maestro Dantone on the harpsichord anticipates, reflects and comments the words of the singer, trascending mere "accompagnment".The "Accademia Byzantina" under Ottavio Dantone confirms once more why they are concidered to be the new star ensemble amongst european baroque orchestras. They manage to unite extreme precision in articulation, phrasing and dynamics with true "soulful" playing.Every bar they play "makes sense",nothing happens unreflected.First violinist Stefano Motanardi leads his string section with joyful and energetic playing, presenting some amazing virtuosity and creativity in his ornamentations.Scholl chooses to not overload the da-capi with ornamentations and therfore not to "re-write" them .Historically that may not be "authentic" (the castrati used to invent quite extravagant ornamentations) but, through giving each da-capo the right amount of new perspective, choosing different colors vocally, along with tasteful ornaments in the right moment Scholl and Dantone give a very lively, "organic" feeling to those beautiful cantatas.
Scholl sings now with more vibrato and chooses also a darker vocal color when the occasion demands it.Again that might not appeal to some early music lovers who prefer almost vibratoless voices (btw... historically vibrato was,in the 17th and 18th century, considered to be a sign of a "free" and healthy voice....) but it serves the words and the drama of each cantata well.
The strongest point of this recording are not singer, compositions or orchestra. The true strengh is the amalgamation of those three elements.Orchestra and singer do not compete against eachother, nor is the orchestra simply accompanying.Scholl and Dantone both put the "story" first and assit eachother in a congenial way,re-animating beautiful cantatas that "slept" in archives for the last 250 years.
mismatch.......2004-01-15
I am, like so many people, fascinated by Scholl's voice. His Harmonia Mundi releases had 'this strange effect on me'. On this latest release his voice somehow does not match the music. Or may be the music does not match his voice.......

Album Description
Volume 1 of Vivaldi's complete sacred music features the impressive if less familiar of the two settings of the Gloria, RV 588, the second setting of the vespers psalm Dixit Dominus, and Nulla in mundo pax sincera, used with striking effect in the film Shine. With texts divided between soloists and chorus, both compositions bear all the hallmarks of Vivaldi's finest choral works: festive brilliance, dramatic changes of mood and texture, and passages of aching melancholy. Conductor Kevin Mallon founded the Aradia Ensemble in 1996, and has already made 20 highly regarded recordings with the group for Naxos.

Glory be to God, for Vivaldi.......2005-10-03
Nobody else but Vivaldi from
the opening notes of the
Dixit Dominus, to the
closing ones in the
"Cum Sancto Spiritus"
Vivaldi's musical style
of well specified.
Choral music from
the same great composer
who brought us "The Four Seasons".
Vivaldi's choral works
too are as highly regarded
as his most famous concerti.
In the Gloria we get a bonus,
there is an introductory "Jubilate"
that in the original is attached to
the RV 588 Gloria, that we do not
get with most recordings, but the
reason for this is that the
"Jubilate" can be played separate.
The Aradia Ensemble does a great
job, and the soloists sing wonderfully.
Mr. Mallon did a great job putting
all together...
Vivaldi's 'other' Dixit Dominus and his 'other' Gloria.......2005-01-09
Prolific as Vivaldi was, he seems to be represented in most people's minds by only a few works: 'The Four Seasons,' of course, a few others of the violin concerti and among his sacred vocal works the 'Gloria' in D major, RV 589 (with its familiar opening bouncing octaves on D) and the 'Dixit Dominus,' RV 594. Presented here, however, are the other surviving 'Gloria', RV 588, also in D major, and the rarely heard other 'Dixit Dominus,' RV 595. Confusing? Well, yes. It doesn't help that the RV numbers (Ryom-Verzeichnis, named for musicologist Peter Ryom) are contiguous in each case and thus easily mistaken for each other. It is a shame, though, that these alternative settings are not better known, and it was a brilliant idea for Kevin Mallon and his Aradia* Ensemble to put them together on a CD and, further, to give them sterling performances. I expect some buyers might obtain this CD thinking they were getting the better-known versions of 'Gloria' and 'Dixit Dominus.' Naxos makes it clear in the printed matter on the back of the CD that these are not those, but frankly even if a musiclover bought these by mistake he or she wouldn't be disappointed in the music itself, because these two lesser-known settings are every bit as good as their sister works. Indeed, in my opinion the second 'Gloria' is ultimately more satisfying because it is more subtle and also because in this presentation it is linked with a lightly scored introduction containing a da capo aria for contralto, 'Jubilate, o amoeni chori' ('Rejoice, fair choirs'), a B minor recitative, and another brief aria 'Sonoro modulamine' ('In sounding music') that then lead directly in the choir's jubilant 'Gloria in excelsis.' Nonetheless, this 'Gloria' partakes of the same joy and choral felicity as its sibling. High points include the minor-key 'Et in terra pax' with its descending scale motif with close imitation in the choral voices, against throbbing chords in the now-expanded orchestra. 'Laudamus te' is a duet for sopranos in joyous roulades in thirds. 'Domine deus, rex coelestis' is a spirited tenor solo. 'Domine, Fili unigenite' is a short choral fugue, just as it is in its better-known sister, and frankly it strikes me as having more satisfying counterpoint but, darn it, it's too brief! A plaintive oboe solo opens the soprano's aria, 'Domine Deus, Agnus Dei.' Then two oboes join in in the following choral 'Qui tollis.' These two linked movements are the sublime apex of the musical arc. Tension is released in a lilting contralto aria, 'Qui sedes ad dextram patris,' which is followed by the soprano's buoyant G major 'Quoniam tu solus sanctus.' We return to our home key of D major in the choral 'Cum Sancto Spirito,' which begins solemnly but then breaks into final fugue with baroque trumpet obbligato.
'Dixit Dominus,' a setting of the 109th Psalm ('The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand') is scored for five vocal soloists, five part chorus, two oboes, strings and continuo. It is partly celebratory and partly minatory ('The Lord ... shall wound even kings in the day of his wrath') and Vivaldi catches both aspects of this Vespers Psalm beautifully, weaving back and forth between the joyous and the sternly remonstrative. This 20-minute work is served well by Mallon and his marvelous Aradia Ensemble, which includes both instrumentalists and chorus. His vocal soloists are largely drawn from the chorus and there is not a weak one among them. They are Michelle de Boer, soprano; Anita Krause, mezzo; Peter Mahon, countertenor; Nils Brown, tenor; and Giles Tomkins, bass.
The only soloist from outside the chorus is Jane Archibald whose silvery and flexible soprano is heard not only in 'Dixit Dominus' and 'Gloria' but also in the extraordinarily beautiful (and new to me) motet for solo soprano, strings and continuo, 'Nulla in mundo pax sincera' ('In the world there is no real peace'), in which she charms with both her sweet tone and absolutely secure coloratura. It contains a gentle siciliano 'Nulla in mundo' that sounds as much like Handel as anything here; for some reason it reminds me of the opening chorus of his 'Solomon.' The text promises serenity in the world beyond. The following recitative and da capo aria warn that the blandishments of the world are false (with fiercesome fioriture) before returning to the hope of sacred peace, ending with an 'Alleluia.' This is a very fine piece and is done superbly by soloist and orchestra alike.
I've increasingly come to feel that the Aradia Ensemble has become one of the better baroque music groups in the world. I look forward to each of their releases.
Give yourself a present. Get this CD and learn some unfamiliar Vivaldi in marvelous performances.
