Chausson: Concert for Violin, Piano and String Quartet

Editorial Reviews

Here's a deluxe package if ever there were one! Itzhak Perlman and Jorge Bolet join the Juilliard Quartet in a smashing performance of one of the most unusual works in all of music. Chausson's Concert (not "Concerto," please note) really is, in effect, a violin concerto in which the accompaniment is not the full orchestra but a piano quintet. Add to that the fully symphonic form of the piece, and the result is a unique musical creation that remains one of the chamber-music repertoire's best-kept secrets. Listen to this recording, and you'll be amazed that the music's not better known. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars So I'm just learning violin..........2006-09-21

and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.

This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.

This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!

4 out of 5 stars Joshua Bell..........2005-12-05

This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

This compilation of selections from recordings made between 1975 and 1998, including one previously unreleased to create a framework, is a curious mix. All the pieces are slow, and this being the age of the soundbite, none is longer than five minutes except the Romance by Dvorák, who is also represented by two other popular pieces, specifically arranged to include a cello part for Yo-Yo Ma. Half the program consists of "themes" from movie soundtracks, and the comparison between them is interesting. John Williams, André Previn, and Max Steiner are film composers whose juicy melodies and swooping orchestrations are appropriate to the medium, while William Walton was a "serious" composer whose style retained its austerity in his film music. Two single slow movements, from Chausson's Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet, and from Brahms's Third Violin Sonata, make one yearn for more. The latter is the only piece on the disc that can reasonably be called "classical;" as for the "rhapsodic" part of the title, it is certainly justified by the performances. Perlman plays everything, whether by Brahms or John Williams, with the same concentration, commitment, and emotional intensity. His expressiveness is always noble and so genuine that there is never a moment of sentimentality or condescension. The program gives him little chance to display his virtuosity, but shows off his glorious tone in all its variety, warmth, and radiance; the climaxes soar with rapturous ecstasy. His partners and accompanying orchestras could not be better. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest .......2007-06-11

Once in a very great while, God creates a musician who even He is in awe of. Itzhak Perlman is simply the greatest violinist who has ever lived. His Violin Concerto (Beethoven) is perhaps the greatest ever recorded, while here his violin expresses the joys and horrors of Cinema Paradiso and Shindler's List, themes not to be missed by anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting, moving, Perlman is magic!.......2005-04-21

I played the violin growing up and could never imagine it could be played as
beautifully as Perlman can play it. He is unequalled as far as I'm concerned,
but anyone would enjoy this album as it has wonderfully memorable show
tunes like Cinema Paradiso and Schindler's List and the most beautiful
rendition ever of Michel Legrand's If It takes forever, I will wait for you
from UMBRELLAS of CHERBOURG.
It stays in my car CD player where I enjoy it over and over!

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

5 out of 5 stars An almost unbelievable work.......2006-02-06

If I was forced at gunpoint to name one musical work that I could call my favorite above all others, I'd have to say this Chausson Concert in D (not without a great amount of apology to Gustav Mahler). I'm both surprised and glad that this piece isn't extremely well-known because at least it isn't hackneyed - I like to think that the best stuff is the stuff you have to search out and look for. The Concert is a magnificent chamber work, stretching over 40 minutes in this edition yet completely coherent and flowing throughout, and never ceasing to move the emotions and soul of the listener. The first movement is superb and calming, with a melody as memorable as any I have heard, and the second is a delightful little ditty. The piece turns toward darker horizons in the third movement, which is one of the most poignant examples of pure soul-bearing, wailing despair I have ever heard, and the fourth is a heroic journey back to eventual light and a magnificent ending. The names Perlman and Bolet on this CD would indicate that the performance would be nothing if not excellent, and indeed it is - expansive, deep, and letting the music reach its full potential. I would HIGHLY recommend this CD to any chamber music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Inexhaustible delight.......2005-01-16

Chausson is one of those composers--it seems to be a trait especially common among the French--who produced relatively little (think Durufle, for another great example), but who produced nothing that isn't exquisite. And, in Chausson's case, the music seems to have been fully mature from day one. If I could pick only one writer of chamber music to take with me to a desert island, it would be Chausson. Hour after hour, listening after listening, it never grows old. This particular recording is wonderful. I also highly recommend the the recording of the Poème, Trio, and other pieces by Graffin, Devoyon et al. on the Hyperion label. Chausson also wrote some lovely Lieder you may want to check out. There's a good recording of these by Natalie Stutzman.

5 out of 5 stars Chausson's Classic Chamber Concert.......2001-03-10

The Concert for Violin, Piano and String Quartet has to be counted among Chausson's best works, and in my opinion it is one of the best and most often overlooked pieces in all chamber music. The first two movements, Decide and Sicilienne, are smooth and delightful. In the third part, Grave, the mood turns more melancholy, and the Concert ends with the powerful, resonant Tres Anime. Perlman and Bolet are impeccable as soloists, and they are ably backed by the famous Juilliard Quartet. A great piece of music and a great performance by world class virtuosos -- what else could you possibly want.

4 out of 5 stars French Romantic Chamber Music.......2006-03-01

The chamber music literature of the French Romantic era is exceedingly rich and rewarding - even if its gems were not so well known through history. This two-CD set showcases five prominent "French Romantic" composers and some of their more delectable works that frequented the aristocratic salons of 19th-century Paris. There was also a strong, interconnected history among these French composers, and many older composers were teachers of the younger generation. The eldest, Cesar Franck [1822-1890] of Flemish birth, was dearly loved by his students which included Chausson [1855-1899]. Chausson later became one of Debussy's [1862-1918] only mentors - quite a compliment given Debussy's fierce independance. Towards the end of the century, Maurice Ravel [1875-1937] studied under Gabriel Faure [1845-1924] at the Paris Conservatoire (where Franck also taught earlier). As composers, many were "late bloomers" who wrote their best works late in life. Franck and Faure are the oldest closest to classicism while the newer generation of Ravel and Debussy developed a completely new language of form and harmonies that paved the way to the "modern era" after the turn of the century.

Each composer was devoted to restoring prominance in French instrumental music which was greatly overshadowed by the fashionable Parisian operas. Franck's Violin Sonata in A-major became his most-loved chamber work - as was Faure's not-so-different Violin Sonata (also in A-major). Both are mainstays in the repertoire today. Yet, during the composers' lifetimes, Faure's and Franck's music was barely known outside France. Perhaps one reason was that (like Ravel) they were quiet, unassuming gentlemen - unlike self-promoting contemporaries like Richard Wagner. Yet, with Chausson, Massenet, d'Indy and later Saint-Saens, they all wrote sensuous, chromatically rich and well-conceived music that was uniquely expressive and innovative. Ravel's Trio is just one of his fascinating, small-scale pieces that has enjoyed great popularity, where the Debussy Trio is an early work rich in sonority and melody.

Into his third decade as a performer now, Joshua Bell usually needs no introduction. His talent is top - technically, lyrically, artistically and tonally - even if some dislike the marketing machine he submitted to. Bell particularly excels in the Romantic repertoire with his deep emotivity and tonal beauty (especially since acquiring the stunningly beautiful and very expensive "Gibson" Stradivarius around 2001). These pieces with French pianist Thibaudet were recorded in 1989/1990 and were re-released in 2005 in this budget, two-CD set.

I think the strength of this set is the program - really excellent pieces and some of the creme. Among these, the Ravel Trio (and perhaps the Chausson Concert) are the stars of the set. Joining the duo on Ravel's Trio is the superb British Cellist, Stephen Isserlis, with the legendary Hungarian Takacs Quartet for the Chausson Concert (a rather unique arrangement that comes off quite nicely). This trio of top-flight musicians brings out Ravel's fascinating tonal nuances and textures with a marvelous touch that makes it a competitive choice among many. The Chausson piece is delectable - a work bathed in French romantic beauty.

As for Thidbaudet's pianism, one would be hard-pressed to fault anything in his support of Bell and unto his own virtuosity. In particular, he shows some crisp and dynamic passage work in the outer movements of Chausson's Concert. However, with Bell on some other pieces - notably the Faure Sonata in A major - his violin sounds unusually "flat" at times to me. But, I think it has more to do with the Decca sound engineering than Bell's ability to shape the music. His violin seems projected too close and without sufficient "breathing space" for the tonal nuances and secondary reverberations to create a fuller, richer sound. This seems more noticable on the first disc (Faure, Franck, Debussy) but may not be apparent just listening to this disc (which sounds clean and crisp) without another reference point. But when compared to other recordings, this Decca recording sounded "stark" to me and lacking "colour." However, once you settle in, such sound nuances for most should not be that big an issue. So, overall, this is a really great collection of French Romantic chamber music - but not really definitive as to the performances or recorded sound quality. Compositions - 5; Performance - 4; Sound Quality - 3.5. Other highly recommended recordings for this era of French chamber music featured here include recordings from Kang/Devoyan (Naxos), Chung/Lupu (Decca), The Florestan Trio (Hyperion) and Gil Shaham's lovely Faure albumn (Vanguard Classics).

5 out of 5 stars Peerless.......2002-12-13

For me, Elmar Oliveira is probably the most under-rated violin soloist out there. His technique is flawless, his tone warm and somehow his own, his phrasing is nothing less than magic, here is a true artist of the violin for you, no doubt about it whatsoever.

Guillaume Lekeu was a student of Cesar Franck, who many beleieve wrote the best sonata ever written for violin. The Lekeu sonata was written for the legendary violinist Eugene Ysaye. This is a simple composition that stresses strong melody as opposed to blazing virtuosity. Just because it is simple doesn't mean it is easy, it takes a true artist to do justice to a tender composition like this. Oliveira makes every note sing with his magic hands, every note is a part of him, every phrase is meaningful and sincere, every note is articulate and full of color. I am aware that Arthur Grumiaux recorded the Lekeu Sonata and I recommend that in addition to this CD but it is hard to find right now.

Chausson needs no introduction to violinists, his incredible "Poeme" is well known, a staple of the repertoire. The music of Chausson is highly impressionistic like a Monet painting: it kind of gives you an atmosphere or a mood that dwells in your subconscious. I am in awe of those French impressionist composers like Ravel, Debussy, Satie, and of course Chausson who were so creative in making music more dreamlike and abstract, in a way they basically invented their own style. Itzhak Perlman recorded this with Jorge Bolet and I recommend having two recordings to compare so make sure to buy both.

BRAVO !!!

5 out of 5 stars Fine musicianship and powerful.......1999-08-21

Having read the outstanding reviews given to this CD-fanfare etc., and having played the disc numerous times-I can only agree that it lives up to the many great comments it receives. It is truly white hot playing, viceral, yet intelligent. A must for anyone who knows and loves the Chausson Concerto. Stunning pianism from Robert Koenig-balanced and fiery performance from all concerned. Bravo to Oliveria!
