Olivier Messiaen must certainly have been the most idiosyncratic of late 20th century composers. Two preoccupations dominated his music -- his Catholicism, and his love of birds. These came together in the figure of St. Francis, to whom he dedicated his last major work. "Des Canyons aux Etoiles..." is his penultimate major work, commissioned for the U.S. Bicentennial. In searching for a topic, Messiaen discovered and fell in love with the canyonland of southern Utah. He visited the area in 1972 -- Cedar Breaks, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Park -- and began writing. This was his tribute -- the stars of the night sky in the desert, and the stripes formed by the layers of rock, reaching deep back into time, the stark beauty of the landscape, filled with birdsong, reflecting the glory of God.

"Des Canyons" is a most idiosyncratic work from a most idiosyncratic composer -- it is unclassifiable in terms of form, though piano concerto comes closer than most. There are 12 movements, and 4 featured instruments -- piano (Roger Muraro), horn (Jean-Jacques Justafre), xylorimba (Francis Petit), and glockenspiel (Renaud Muzzolini). The orchestra (Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung) is reduced to a large chamber ensemble, with woodwind, brass and percussion sections of orchestral size, but just 13 strings. The 4th and 9th movements are piano solos, playing the songs of the white-browed robin and the mockingbird, respectively. Messiaen was a serious amateur ornithologist who taped birdsong and transcribed it for use in his music -- other birds featured in "Des Canyons" are the Sahara bird, orchard oriole, canyon wren, American robin, Stellar's jay, and wood thrush. Much of the long, episodic work is dominated by piano and percussion. A wind machine is used periodically, adding to the unique texture.

This is, I believe, the third recording of "Des Canyons," following one on Sony with Salonen conducting, and one on Montaigne, with de Leeuw conducting. I haven't heard them, so I can't compare, but this 2001 recording is marvelous. The conductor knew the composer and worked with him on other recordings, so he is tuned into Messiaen's idiosyncratic vision. I find that "Des Canyons aux Etoiles..." weaves its spell most effectively late at night, by starlight...

This recording comes very close to capturing the experience of hearing this work live. I heard it several years ago with Peter Serkin playing piano and haven't been the same since. Messiaen goes into a musical space that is truly sublime and absolutely overwhelming. I can only recommend that people listen to this work several times, and really, really listen. It will pay great rewards.

Messiaen's Des canyons aux etoiles... is wonderful piece of music but is also a challenging one. You must be patience and attentive to every whisper, although I find myself swiftly hypnotized. Written for solo piano, horn, xylorimba, glockenspiel and large chamber ensemble the work conveys a feeling of spirituality and timeless. The work has twelve movements arranged into three sections comprised of five movements, two movements and five. Each part concluding with a visit to a specific site in Utah.

Myung-Whun Chung is maybe today greatest interpretations of Messiaen. The Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra has all the virtuosity and the talent to brings to life Messiaen's sound world. Roger Muraro (Piano) and Jean-Jacques Justafre (Horn) also makes an impressive listening in their parts. This is one of the essential releases of Messiaen this year and maybe ever.

Deutsche Grammophon beautifully printed booklet includes a number of Quotations under every movement title. The first movement titled "the Desert" bring a quote by the philosopher Ernest Hello which I found all the meanings of Messiaen's music. It says "He who is to be found in vast: one must discard everything in order to take the first steps towards him... Go deep into the Desert of Deserts..."

Buy this CD and get lost in the desert...

    "From the canyons to the stars" is Olivier Messiaen's musical vision of the sights and sounds (birdcalls in particular) of the American West. If you've ever been to Zion National Park or Bryce Canyon, then this musical travelogue will certainly stimulate your memory. Messiaen's musical language in all of these works is unique. You won't find conventional melody or harmony, but it is colorful and consistent, and he's just as likely to use lovely, consonant harmonies as nasty dissonant ones. Once you understand that the purpose of his music is almost purely descriptive, your own imagination takes over and it becomes fascinating and enjoyable--which is a good description of these fine performances. --David Hurwitz

    Valuable compilation, with Messiaen's late(well, later) masterpiece, the longest piece for piano and orchestra in the orchestral repertoire the main work, and the shorter, but no less excellent OISEAUX EXOTIQUES and COULEURS DE LA CITE CELESTE. CANYONS is one of the composers most unusual scores (and that's saying a lot!) with its part for wind machine, its piano part of rushes of birdsong, and the weird effects on the cellos in movement no.5 jst some of the highlights. OISEAUX is one of Messiaen's most succesful 'birdsong pieces', in which he invented an almost entirely new musical language, alternating blocks of transcribed birdsong. COULEURS is all glittering colours, with the virtuosic tinklings of piano, xylophones and percussion contrasted or should that be complemented with rich brass chords and the sound of 3 clarinets.

    The performance comes out as just a little too clinical and polished, bringing out the percussive twang to the music better than the richly contemplative moments, but it is still very good.

    PS-This excellent release has recently been re-issued as part of Sony's Essential Classics series at a bargain price. The presentation is completely adequarte, with Paul Crossley's marvellous notes, and at £9.99 for 2 CDs, it's a must buy.

    Des Canyons is a beautiful & transcendently absorbing score, one which is emerging as the archetype in Messiaen's canon -- his best & best-loved. Leave the notoriously difficult score on the shelf and listen. This, its only available recording until recently, is wonderfully recorded and lovingly executed. May not appeal to all sensibilities, but I can't help believing that anyone with affinity for the beauties of nature will feel rewarded tuning their ears towards Messiaen's landscapes.

    I'm a recent convert to classical music, and when a glowing article about for Olivier Messiaen appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, I decided to give it a whirl. I feel I'm out the money I paid. The notes seem randomly thrown together, and the "exotic birds" sound like no kind of bird I've heard. The clamor of notes is disconcerting and unharmonious, and the audio effects (some kind of wind machine used to simulate canyon breezes comes to mind) seem contrived and only more distracting. Nor am I alone in this position: my girlfriend Sarah, a classical flutist and pianist, agrees that the "music" is unmusical and the supposed birds aren't there to be heard. Perhaps she and I just don't get it. And perhaps it's just not there to be gotten.

    If you are buying this cd set to study Exotic Birds, save your money!! The xylophone player is off for a good 15 measures in the middle section. This makes it very difficult to listen to with a score!

    Hopefully Sony Classics will re-master this strangely deleted album so that is once again available in its original form. While portions of the recording can be found splintered on recordings by the individual composers, there is something very special about the selection of works contained here and one with such intelligent curating that the original statement deserves to be widely available.

    Esa-Pekka Salonen is the unifying force here, selecting works by Takemitsu, Messiaen, Lutoslawski and Stravinsky in a manner that makes for a luminous exploration of some of the finest work by each composer. Beginning with Takemitsu's 'Vers, l'arc-en-ciel, Palma' for oboe d'amore, guitar and orchestra, Salonen employs the forces of John Williams on guitar, Gareth Hulse on oboe and the London Sinfonietta for an ethereal performance of this subtle, mystical work. He then turns to two movements from Messiaen's 'Turangalila-symphonie' with Paul Crossley at the piano and Tristan Murail at the Ondes Martenot supported by the Philharmonia Orchestra.

    Lutoslawski's 'Les espaces du sommeil' from the recording by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with John Shirley-Quirk as soloist is played in its entirety. Messiaen's excerpted 'Des canyons aux etoiles' features Paul Crossley with the London Sinfonietta followed, oddly enough, by Stravinsky's opening to 'Le scare du printemps' that fits the sequential mood perfectly. And the recital closes with Takemitsu's 'To the Edge of Dream' for guitar and orchestra, again with John Williams as soloist.

    True this recording was a compilation of previously recorded entire works, but the joy of the CD is the pairing of works as selected by Salonen in his usual intelligent and creative juxtaposition. It is a recording well worth searching for. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, March 06
