The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Ensemble, without Sir Neville Marriner but very much in his spirit, plays Eine kleine Nachtmusik as Mozart intended, with a string quartet and added bass. It is a very fine reading, though some ornaments and figures are, in modern fashion, smoothed over rather than clearly articulated, and some are even misplayed. The sound is excellent, close up, and naturally balanced. --Ted Libbey

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

If you are the type who is interested in classical music but doesn't quite know where to start - or are intimidated by all the choices or confusing musical terminology - then the Philips "Set Your Life to Music" series is ideal. These 20-or-so collections select some of Classical Music's finest and most lyrical music that are easily enjoyed by most anyone. While such compilation CD's and the cute cover art can be rather irritating to a few veteran classical music fans (claiming somehow it "dumbs down" classical music), the average person newer to classical music should care less about such attitudes and likely find this collection most enjoyable and inspiring to learn more about classical music.

This Mozart collection is a quality introduction to Mozart - and one of the better ones in the series. Where other Mozart CD's in the series assemble quieter, slower music, this compliation is energetic and fast-paced. Among all classical music, Mozart (and most of the music of the earlier Baroque-era like Bach) is the "easiest on the ear" with its always pleasant, melody-rich tones. And these fine and varied selections on this disc present Mozart at his most festive, creative and full of life. What you will not hear in such music of Mozart are the often-disturbing tones or jarring sounds of later composers. This is partly what makes such collections more 'easily accessible' to the newer listener.

The variety here is excellent: brilliant opera overtures (but no singing), energetic symphonies and concertos, sprightly serenades (festive outdoor party music), cheerful divertimentos (pleasant background music for dinners and galas) and charming piano sonatas (solo piano music). So, such variety also serves as an introduction to the various types of music Mozart wrote - so you can see what you like most and perhaps pursue additional music in that category. Both the sound quality and performers are top-notch to make this Mozart collection a high-quality, lively, and naturally-energizing experience ideally suited to the earlier hours of the day or afternoon. With such invigorating music, you might skip the coffee. Overall, a fine introduction to Mozart and one of the better CD's in this Philip's series.

A great many young people like myself are interested in Classical music, but it can be daunting and confusing, what with all the versions out there! This album was my first classical buy, and it won me over! "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro" explodes, starting it all off with a bang. The album gradually softens, yet stays light and airy like a bubbling glass of champagne until wrapping up with a warm conclusion. listen to me! I sound like i was paid to do this! [ : ) Just give this a shot, especially if you know you like classical but aren't sure what to get!

    Mozart never fails to enrich my mind and mood and this CD has a pleasant collection of pieces that are mellow enough to listen before bedtime or lively enough to start your day. I prefer this CD to the first Mad about Mozart.

      This recording restores freshness, vitality and excitement to the experience of listening to Mozart.

      Eine kleine Nachtmusik starts the disc off, and you immediately sense that Andrew Manze has something new to say. There is plenty of attack and drive, but never to the point of becoming affected. The rich sonority from the period instruments is well captured by the sound engineering and is even more pronounced if your equipment allows you to enjoy the high resolution SACD layer.

      The powerful, driving Adagio and Fugue in C minor is given an intense and relentless performance. This is enhanced by the prominence of the base strings in the recording mix, which adds to the impression of strength.

      While this performance is not quite "punk Mozart" it does provide a very unpretentious, fresh and vital approach the music that will keep you coming back for more.

        This is excellent for
        a) people whom haven't really heard much Mozart and
        b) those whom are "easing back into" his music.
        I fit into the latter category. I recently watched Amadeus for the first time and was STAGGERED by the movie...as fictional as it may well be.
        I just HAD to have more than my modest collection of his piano works, and this 2-disc set is PERFECT!
        Also, I was never too much into Opera, and THIS collection helped cure me of that as well! Just enough highlights to intrigue...

        You can tell the music is well performed and there is the sense of passion from the performers. No complaints in that aspect. The problem is these do not sound like CDs. They sound like tape re-recorded to CD. Those that remember the underlying static that was on almost all cassette tapes. That is on these CDs. And as you turn the music up to fully enjoy it the distrubance comes through even more. I have tried these on 3 different systems, and all have the same results.

        Going to try to clean it up by converting to MP3 and back again. I know you lose some quality but it may make the overall enjoyment better.

        Please don't get me wrong, the performance on these CD's is exceptional. And it is truley a shame that there is this issue. If you have a way to cancel noise then by all means this should be a good buy. If you play it softly then you will not notice noise on the recording. At the price I am not upset at this but I am a bit disappointed at it.

        I am so impressed and moved by the music, the selection, the quality of the recordings. An incredible collection at an unbelievable price. I can not imagine a better overall set of this magnitude and quality. If you need Mozart, want to know Mozart, have never listened to Mozart, you need this set. Happy 250th!

        The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Ensemble, without Sir Neville Marriner but very much in his spirit, plays Eine kleine Nachtmusik as Mozart intended, with a string quartet and added bass. It is a very fine reading, though some ornaments and figures are, in modern fashion, smoothed over rather than clearly articulated, and some are even misplayed. The sound is excellent, close up, and naturally balanced. --Ted Libbey

        Mozart, ah Mozart. This recording is fabulous and The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Ensemble have done a wonderful job of bringing Mozart's music to life. This CD is great to listen to during that last hour before going to bed. Music to wind down with and end the day. I highly recommend it!
