Idomeneo was Mozart's first "great" opera, composed when he was just 25. A very serious work, coming in at over three hours and with few big set numbers (closed-end arias, duets, etc.), it has never been as popular as The Magic Flute, Figaro, and Don Giovanni. And when it is presented, it's normally because a famous tenor wants to show off his Mozartean style (both Pavarotti and Domingo have recorded it). But if there were ever a case for the work's greatness and "saleability," it's this recording. British tenor Ian Bostridge is ideal in the title role, and he sings the very difficult, first version of his second act aria with passion and ease; elsewhere, he's authoritative and moving. As his son, Idamante, Lorranine Hunt Lieberson proves herself one of the finest Mozarteans around. Lisa Milne makes a lovely Ilia, singing her arias beautifully. Barbara Frittoli moves away from her normal Verdi roles to portray the crazy Elettra with just the right mania, and Anthony Rolfe Johnson (who has sung the title role) is welcome in the role of Arbace. Conductor Mackerras presents the opera complete, and the playing and singing of the orchestra and chorus are brilliant. As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

I bought this cd in 1982 when it was first released at a much higher price. It quickly became one of the family's favorite recordings. It's Mozart at his most social and a mature and self-assured Sir Neville giving an energetic and upbeat interpretation of these works.

I consider myself fortunate to have found this gem. I have always admired Casals not only for his extraordinary musicianship but also for his political courage. The story of Prades is heart warming and the music is a rare treasure. If you are a Casals fan, you might also want to hear Casals conducting Beethoven's 7th Symphony...a masterpiece.

The quality of the MUSIC here is remarkable. Many of the world's elite classical artists of the post-World War II generation are here - and the result is magic! A few of the highlights for me are the Mozart Piano Quartet No. 2 (disc 1), Beethoven Cello Sonata in A Major (disc 10), Mozart Oboe Quartet (disc 7), and many more...

You might wonder, however, how these live 50's recordings compare to recordings made in the digital era? Well... in a word, very good, very good indeed considering. Occasionally there is audience coughing (primarily just during the breaks between sections) - after all this was recorded live and you can also sometimes hear music pages turning on the stage if you listen closely. However, the sound is about as full range as you could ask for and the hiss and noise levels are very acceptable and not ever intrusive - I did note that the string instruments generally sound very good while the piano does not always fair quite as well, sometimes sounding slightly boxy - the piano is just far more difficult to record in any live setting because it is more dependent upon the room acoustics. Still, overall, the restoration is very good and trust me, you will become engaged in the MUSIC very quickly and forget all about any limitations of the recordings.

To summarize, as other reviewers have also noted, the sound quality, while not perfect by digital standards, is indeed very good - the important thing is to be assured that sound quality considerations never get in the way of the fantastic, wonderful performances. They really don't make music like this anymore.... well maybe they do sometimes, but not on thirteen discs in a row! Of course, I'm now going to purchase the second box set.

When I first heard this set, I thought to myself: now I know how Howard Carter felt when he looked for the first time into Tutankhamen's newly-excavated tomb. Maybe you know the story: As his colleagues broke the seal on the long-undiscovered tomb's final door, Carter peered into a completely dark treasure room, illuminated fitfully by the beam of his flashlight. Someone asked, "What do you see?" and he answered, "Wonderful things!" Well, this set of Casals & Friends performances from early 1950s Prades Festivals also offers an unbelievable wealth of long-unheard, wonderful things. It is impossible to overpraise this production, or find the words to adequately thank Music and Arts for issuing such extravagance in these days of penny-pinching from what we used to call the major record companies. Thirteen (!) CDs of live performances, most featuring Pablo Casals working with front-rank collaborators, and all worth hearing many times over. Highlights? Casals, Rudolf Serkin, Alfred Cortot and Eugene Istomin survey all the Beethoven cello sonatas; Casals and Menuhin treat us to all the Brahms trios; the great, lamented William Kapell plays glorious Mozart and Beethoven with a young Arthur Grumiaux; the Vegh Quartet offer marvelous Schumann ..... and many, many more. Yes, you learn that even Willy Kapell could smudge a note now and then when performing 'live.' But, overall, the mistakes are few, and the musical insights so numerous as to defy listing. Note that these performances are completely different from those other, "official" live Prades recordings issued by Sony/Columbia/CBS over the past 30 years, so if you own the Sony CDs (and you should!), rest assured that while there is some overlap of repertory, you will not be duplicating performances. (On the other hand, 9 of the 13 discs were previously issued a few years back by Music and Arts.) Sound quality is mono and variable, but never less than completely acceptable. In fact, the sound quality (as realized by ace M&A engineer Maggi Payne) is surprisingly good considering that many of the performances apparently originated in the naves of ancient stone churches, not exactly a recording engineer's dream soundstage! Packaging is spartan, but well-designed and attractive: paper envelopes contain the CDs which are held together in a space-efficient soft box. Full liner notes helpfully discuss the origins of the Prades Festivals, and provide a limited discussion of participating artists other than Casals. (The fabulous Kapell performances -- of music he recorded nowhere else -- represent the pianist's only appearance at Prades, just a month or two before his tragic death in a plane crash.) Final word: In this set you get some of the greatest performing artists of all time playing some of the greatest chamber music ever written ..... and for an unbelievably low price. Unless you are completely averse to live music-making or have no tolerance at all for fallible sound, you need to own and hear these discs, over and over again!

Wow. I just purchased this album yesterday and have listened to it over and over already! Kiri is perfect, every note, every vowel..every song, it's just absolute heaven. The first track, 'Martern aller Arten' is beautifully sung, Kiri flings her voice around and achieves a glorious, full sound. But the best track of all is Sei il Padre perdei -it will make you cry, smile, be blown away and be just plain amazed. Kiri has the richest voice I've ever heard, and is one in a million - the greatest soprano of this century, and if you looking for a good compilation by this artist, you've found it.

Ours is an age happily rich in lyric mezzo-sopranos who can handle the challenges of the coloratura repertoire of Rossini and Mozart. One of the most exciting is Bulgarian mezzo Vesselina Kasarova, who combines beauty of voice, intelligence of interpretation, and dramatic conviction in one very talented package. Here she is in her element, as a passionate Dorabella, an ardent Idamante, and--making a good case for a mezzo in roles usually given to a soubrette--a very sexy Zerlina, among others. The instrumental-only interludes weren't really necessary, but at least they fit in with the rest of the album. --Sarah Bryan Miller

Frau Kasarova is a vivid story teller. She has an expressive voice of many colors and she isn't shy about using them to accentuate these difficult Mozart arias. Hers is a rather quirky voice... I find it mesmerizingly erotic and exotic...tho perhaps not as 'conventionally' beautiful like Kozena's or Graham's. She has a full mature burgandy colored voice that's clarinet-ish. Ringing top that has no trouble hitting high C, and a more masculine bottom. It is the mixed middle that is positively seductively rich. The whole range is seamlessly integrated but not always presented as such (she has a way of making her register breaks a very effective interpretation tool).

Anyway, there is never any doubt what the essence of each aria is... what the character she is portraying is feeling. She seems more concern with communicating the characters' motivations than sounding beautiful. I love that... others who enjoy technically flawless (even at the expense of drama) singing may not like it. This singer is very dramatically involve and doesn't make good "relaxing background music."

She is especially great with the castrato arias from Mitridate, Idomeneo, and La clemenza di Tito (both as Sesto and as Vitellia!). What wicked mania in Farnace's scornful laugh in 'Venga pur'! The coldness of her second pass at "L'ira sua mi rendera" sends chill down my spine. And Farnace's real reversal and penitent is heard in his 'Gia dagli il velo'. To say that her Zerlina is sensual is an understatement! And her Sesto's 'Deh, per questo istante solo' is so emotionally revealing. Beautiful pianissimo contrasted by blasted forte that would move the stoniest heart! She is one of the best Sesto ever on stage (both vocally and theatrically), but her 'Non piu di fiori' is so marvellously done that I dream of hearing her take on Vitellia (She does have the high D...as a direct and lingering hit on it is caught on tape in her Rossini Arias & Duets CD). But perhaps not... an instrument like this should be protected from such treacherous tessitura. Better not kill the goose who lays golden eggs.

I'd never expect such a forcefully pinging top from a deep mezzo (amazing chest register...and just about the most agile coloratura voice around.. she sings ALL the notes!). This gal is a force of nature! Her closing concert aria 'Io ti lascio' is a study in legato singing, too. And regardless of the libretto (Pensa che a te non lice il ricordarsi di me), this is one singer you'd find very hard to not remember.

The orchestra is conducted superbly by Sir Colin Davis. The pace always seem just right and he is just as attentive to the musical nuances as his mezzo is. A great team! I only wish she had included a few duets as well... in place of the 2 orchestral interludes from Idomeneo and La clemenza di Tito

The review by the previous listener who was, dissapointed that this recording, received as a gift, is opera was apparently looking for "soothing" music (possibly elevator music)to put her and possibly her child-to-be to sleep. I agree - if jello is what you seek, do not purchase this disc. If, on the other hand, you seek passion, beauty, and possibly a widening of your musical horizons, do, by all means, purchase this disc. Soaring arias, heavenly voices and the most lovely music imaginable await you. Still, Richard Clayderman and Britney Spears are available to you and your unfortunate child.

I received this CD as a gift and was very disappointed to discover it was opera. I have other CD's of Mozart's music that are instrumental and very soothing. If you like opera then it may be a good choice for you, but if you are like me and don't care for opera you are probably better off sticking to an instrumental collection.

What can I say? The arias are executed neatly and artistically, with the perfect blend of orchestra and voice. Ms. Vaness is my favorite soprano; her voice has a beautiful tone, but is very controlled- no wailing or warbling like other sopranos (infinitely superior to the much-overrated Kiri Te Kanawa). The quality of her voice is like a creamy blend of mint and dark chocolate, but the chocolate is neither bitter, nor overly sweet. Too bad she's not in more recordings. Buy this one while you can!

Carol Vaness sings beautifully on this CD. Ms. Vaness started out at California State University Northridge where I first heard her sing. It was "love at first hearing." You'll feel the same way when you hear this Cd! Buy it, you'll be glad you did! Email:boland7214@aol.

    These arias were recorded when ES was still quite young.
    What a voice! What singing! What devotion!
    It is interesting to have ES singing Cherubino as well as Susanna and the Countess Rosina in Le Nozze di Figaro.
    Her Donna Elvira is always a killer.
    But my greatest admiration in this album goes to her aria from Il re Pastore, the great Rondo of Aminta.
    The great beauty of her singing - a duet with the solo violin, with well-controlled coloraturas, well-paced tempo supported by seamless breathing - her performance is simply unsurpassed, not even by Joan Sutherland in the other recording of the same aria, and certainly not by others available (like Renee Fleming or Ann Murray). ES never over-did those coloraturas like Cecilia Bartoli does these days, and that in itself is a big 'pro' in the enjoyment level of her Mozart arias.
    Although the recordings are old and not really in state-of-the-art accoustics, the sheer beauty of ES's singing makes up for any lack that there may be in the sound.
