5 out of 5 stars Stout Irish Music!.......2004-07-21

I was introduced to Amadan by accident when they happened to be playing at the bar I chose for my 21st birthday bash. I fell in love with the music instantly and, several months later, I managed to purchase this CD. It spent a solid month in my CD player and somehow manages to get wedged in it every so often these days.

Like Celtic music? Like punk? Like rock? Heck, you don't even have to like any of these genres to love Amadan. They're one of those rare bands where it doesn't matter what your taste is, you can't help loving them. This CD is an excellent blend of traditional and original (that manages to sound traditional, but punkified) music that will always put a smile on your face.

Buy this CD andraise a pint to this fabulous band and their first CD!

5 out of 5 stars their new album is even better.......2004-04-30

Their new album, Hell Bent 4 Victory, is even better and badder than this one. Their skill at playing and arranging has come a long way from SOL to HB4V. The same raw energy, andrelin, pub party wildness, only more focussed at a bit faster pace. For for working, working out, partying, marching to war, and sowing wild oats. I prefer these guys to Andrew W.K. by a long shot. The Pogues had a baby and it's called Amadan.

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2004-03-23

The CD is excellent. Everyone I invite to listen to it falls in love with it. I have seen these guys live at Kells and they blow us away every time. If you like music, you must own this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Irish at its best.......2004-03-01

Amadan is an incredible blend of traditional irish music, with a more modern, punk sound. Their first albumn, Sons of Liberty, is fantastic from beginning to end, each song better than the next. It comes with my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD ~20 times in the last four days.......2004-01-24

This is how Irish rock/punk music was meant to be made. We just had to wait a while for it to come out. This is the best CD ever. It doesn't even matter what you listen to to enjoy it. I used to be a fluent rap fan until I heard this and now I'm a fluent Amadan fan. This band is seriously good enough to make it to the next Woodstock or something like that. I have burned copy but I like it so much that I'm gonna buy the album. I highly recommend recommending this to other people too. My brothers girlfriend knows one of the members and that's how I found out, so I'm telling you. Buy this. Now. Now. Are you clicking buy...? If yes then gooood, if no, then do it. Seriously. Insanely awsome stout Irish music!!

Album Description

Ball of Design is a record full of anger and hope. Much darker, more epic, and undoubtedly more political than their last album, 1:3:1, Ball of Design features a more focused Dufus—both figuratively and literally. Dufus has gone from fifteen members to a fit five: Strictly Beats on drums, Rick on guitar, Marko on bass, Lucas Crane phd on analog arts (probably the best tape deck-ist in the universe) and mastermind Seth Faergolzia on vocals and guitar. This is hippie death metal that is changing the world.

On Ball of Design, Dufus choose to eschew some of their more wacky leanings—no jocks carrying dildos or more girl cops. Nope, this time you, the listener, are asked to forget all you think you know, about music, about your life, to "set aside your idiot for a minute" and pay attention to a great rock record.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spirited jamming rock for open minds.......2005-03-26

Powerful ideas meld with street-level jamming. Big and chaotic, but still coherent and tribal-intimate. In other words, a fine balance of elements. The epic "Freedom" takes awhile to get off the ground before wielding and sustaining that power, but I take that as a metaphor for the title subject.

Seth Faergolzia is in the lead for this band of brothers, musical rainbow warriors lifting the discourse about what is worth fighting for.

All players bring a powerful presense to the noisiness = This is not randomly-made sound. Choices are made as they open up the performances and themselves to exciting possibilities beyond the performers' control. Sometimes what's beyond their control may at first seem to some ears as noise, but they limit -- or control, if you will -- the amount of what is beyond their control.

To sum up "Ball of Design": Universal themes are given unique expression. The album is like a fine home-brewed spirit that is all the more amazing for not having been mellowed for the larger marketplace.

I'd liken Dufus to what Polyphonic Spree would sound like if they were making a bloody, balls-out and ultimately beautiful racket.

Enhancing the musical experience, be prepared to encounter oddly-spelled words among the lyrics provided: If they were just misspelled, I'd be screaming bloody murder, but they're so persistent they provide a side stained window into Seth Faergolzia's mind. More insight at dufus.tv. And something I almost never experience, I fell in love with the inscrutable cartoons peppered in the album graphics.

I have been a fan of this band since their first cd Symbiosis (Noise 1995)...Iron Maidenish riffs and killer grooves. Then they moved to a more progressive metal sound on the albums The Autumn Years (Modern Music Records 1996) and Slave to the Mind (InsideOut 1999) both of those albums are killer stuff. Then came the disappointing album One In A Million (InsideOut 2001) and i thought this band had run its course. But much to my surprise the band came back stronger than ever on this new release and once again becomes a force in the progressive metal genre. The Band Lineup remains the same from the previous album ... Volker Walsemann-Vocals,Guitars... Marco Ahrens-Guitars... Jorg Springub-Keyboards... Heiko Spaarmann-Bass... Andreas Tegeler. Standout tracks on this cd are Walk Into Nowhere,Every Kind of Life and Terminal Trip. If you like Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Rush then this is a cd for you.

Haven't found a German prog-rock album disappoint yet this past year. Sylvan, RPWL and now PNC. This is very good 3rd album. Everything a good prog album should contain, good keyboard work, great guitar solos, lots of time changes, great mix of mellow & heavy passages, vocalist with a nice voice. You can't go wrong.

Can you imagine my joy at finally managing to purchase this CD? Maybe.

This CD, like its younger brother, is one of the finest albums that you will ever purchase. A lot more original tunes in this one, but you could hardly tell the difference between traditional and original. That's the beauty of Amadan.

    5 out of 5 stars All Fun.......2004-07-13

The younger brother to Sons of Liberty, Hell Bent 4 Victory is definitely the rebel in the family. With many original songs mixed in with more traditional tunes, HB4V is guaranteed to keep your feet tapping to the beat long after it's stopped playing. A little bit of Irish, a little bit of punk, and all fun.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-07-09

Excellent. A little faster and a little harder than Sons of Liberty, but still a welcome difference.
    Keep them coming boys!

"Isn't that what jazz does ... create chaos out of order?" Hip Jazz-Bop tries to answer this pithy question with a batch of swinging numbers from jazz's classic period. The Black Lion label's 1950s and '60s vaults have been raided to the benefit of all. Sonny Stitt's version of "Loverman" and Bud Powell's "Blues in the Closet" epitomize bebop's cool complexity. Pianists Duke Pearson and Hampton Hawes add their dexterity to the predominantly bebop-flavored CD with "Bags Groove" and "Black Forest," respectively. Tunes from Ben Webster ("Blues for Herluf") and Earl Hines ("Swingin' Away"), however, hark back to the prewar period, when swing was mutating into bop. Full-fledged ordered chaos abounds in Thelonious Monk's marvelous "Something in Blue" and Kenny Dorham's labyrinthine "Avars." For new listeners, this is an excellent introduction to jazz's golden years, but it can also be recommended to the initiated for its fine balance of styles and for uncovering this treasure trove of expatriate jazz recorded in Europe. --Wally Shoup

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars bright, forceful chamber works .......2005-03-21

Jason Eckhardt steps forward with this Mode release as a fearless young proponent of modernism in all its complexity, a shining alternative to the prevalent eclecticism of our time. His Ensemble 21, formed in 1993, deserves acclaim as well, a unit seemingly out of step with the American musical landscape, and not surprisingly pursuing collaborations with Boulez's IRCAM and other European composers and musicians.

Included here are 4 works. "After Serra" (2000) is a wild number featuring "aggressive outbursts and bizarre, spinning resonances" (from Marilyn Nonken's liner notes). The use of bass clarinet provides an unusual timbral contrast. "Tangled Loops" (1996) features the saxophone of Taimur Sullivan, with Marilyn Nonken on piano. A fully composed work, it takes as its model the improvisations of Parker, Coltrane, and Dolphy -- a fantastic high-energy piece. "A Glimpse Retraced" (1999) is a chamber concerto for piano and four instruments, and Marilyn Nonken, co-founder with Eckhardt of Ensemble 21, is superb. Finally, "Polarities" (1998) is a fascinating web of changing relations among the players in two movements. The second movement introduces something shocking in the context of what has gone before -- a long, slow, quiet droning section which erupts half-way through with piano, and then the other instruments, vaulted back into furious motion.

Eckhardt began in music as a guitarist, who was first drawn to the complexity of heavy metal and jazz. But on the road to Damascus, he discovered Webern, and he has transferred the drive of jazz and rock to the realm of contemporary classical composition. OUT OF CHAOS is definitely one of the best releases of 2004, and it marks the emergence of an important new voice beyond the limited precincts of new music, where Eckhardt has already been a professor and the recipient of many prestigious grants, commissions and awards.

I feel more optimistic about the future of music in general, and American contemporary music in particular, thinking about things to come from the 34-year-old Jason Eckhardt -- Elliott Carter and Roger Reynolds have found a worthy successor for their brilliant, cutting edge ideas!

Experimental crossover mixed with claustrophobic noise-core brutality processed through acid grooves is just one of the ways to describe their music. The italian outfit is influenced by dark and post hardcore attitude that gives to the songs their unique mood. Focusing on great melodic patterns C.C. are creating an exciting music melting pot. Furious screams and whispered vocals with constant melodic attitude, explain the visionary and revolutionary episodes. 2006

        Album Description

Genre: New-age/ambient/meditative/relaxing/instrumental. Written, performed, produced and engineered by Dane Rochelle, August 1997 thru October 1998.

Instrumentation: Analog synthesizer, digital and acoustic pianos, electric and acoustic guitars. Recordings mixed to Sony digital 2-track from Tascam analog 4-track reel-to-reel studio masters. Final mastering performed at Room 29 Recording Studios, Westerly, Rhode Island, November 1998 with Dave Nigrelli.

Almost prayerful in it's deliberate unobtrusiveness, Dane Rochelle's debut CD release, The Dream Garden, is a beautifully gentle and introspective musical meditation. An avid admirer of the works-both musical and philosophical-of Brian Eno, Erik Satie, John Cage, and Steve Reich, Dane has created something intriguingly original and enjoyable here; inviting, yet graciously undemanding, and that's a beautiful thing...

I picked up a copy of this album while visiting Boston several weeks ago, at a little shop on Newbury Street. It was mixed in with some Eno stuff, so I took a chance. What a strange little gem! It's a very quite, understated album. I brought it back to the hotel with me, put some headphones on, and soon nodded peacefully off to sleep. It didn't DEMAND my attention. It just accompanied me. I truly love that quality about it. It certainly is reminiscent of Eno and Satie and even Riech. I highly recommend this one. You owe it to yourself...
