Here's a great idea for a recording--and it really works. Beginning with a dramatic reading of Thomas Deloney's famous ballad "The Queenes Visiting of the Campe at Tilsburie," accompanied by an anticipatory drum cadence, this program recalls music popular in England during the time of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. It's a fantastic mix of primarily instrumental music--bass Richard Wistreich performs the opening narration and sings on two other tracks-- that includes many anonymous tunes in arrangements by members of the York Waits. The documentation on the music is informative, and those bagpipes, hurdy- gurdies, three-holed pipes, and sackbuts are something else. --David Vernier
