As the line in the opening track, "The Peanut Vendor", says: "Fifty million monkeys can't be wrong." And back in 1971, the purchasers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads known as The King's Singers were all over television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri--also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and color in the CD transfer (though, please note, there's less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe," "Scarborough Fair," and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" are here, along with lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise and complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. --Andrew Green
Customer Reviews:
King's Singers Debut.......2007-01-12
I am a real fan of the King's Singers, and this album was very well received. I loved it. Recommend it to anyone.
Thirty years old: still terrific.......2003-02-02
We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing.
The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?
It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.
Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the orignal sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.
The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and Garfunkel arrangement, whereas The Oak and the Ash and Blow Away the Morning Dew are special creations for the group by Gordon Langford.
Time Was and The Green Leaves of Summer show the group's ability to create a wonderful mood through slow, soulful singing.
Highly recommended. Timeless music.
This is vintage King's Singers!.......2001-06-09
In the thirty or more years that the King's Singers have been going, they've released dozens of CDs. And as much as I adore some of their recent recordings, I still regard this first album as some of their best work.
This performance is both of a very high quality and is also a magnificent showcase of the variety of things the King's Singers sing. I doubt you would find many other recordings which contain works by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bacharach as well as traditional folksongs from the British Isles and America - especially not recordings that are of such a high standard. The vocal harmonies are just delicious, and the Gordon Langford Trio also provides a brilliant accompaniment and gives songs like The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah and Summertime a delightful relaxed feeling. Then there is also the lighthearted and whimsical What Kind of Things - a song all about what sort of music the King's Singers sing!
I was going to give this CD four stars rather than five (mainly because I hesitate to give top marks to anything ever - I know, I'm picky), but in the end I honestly couldn't think of anything which would justify taking a star away. It's worth all five!

Customer Reviews:
A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13
The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.
Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.
Still, some great stuff here.

Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals, Vol. 2.......2006-03-22
The purchase went as we had hoped. The delievry was as promised, and the quality of the product equal too, or above our expectations.
Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10
I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!
Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06
Well, ERIC records has done it again.
Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.
First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.
There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.
Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!
There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...
Its listening the way it used to be.

an excellent sampler of patriotic military music.......2003-02-17
I love this CD because it combines into one disc many outstanding and well recorded (Telarc DDD) performances of a variety of patriotic military tunes. For someone who doesn't want to break down and buy the entire "Victory at Sea" set, along with soundtracks to "Patton," "Casablanca" and more, this is a fine choice. My only complaint would be that conductor Kunzel has a habit of adding his own flourishes to pieces. But the outstanding clarity of the Telarc sound and the grandness of the Cincinnati Pops counters this.

Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26
Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.
Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.
The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.
We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

Amazing!!.......2007-02-23
Great music performed by one of the best orchestras in the world. What more can you ask for?Ron Goodwin is a genius. The music that he wrote is incredible. His best pieces are featured here on this cd. From the great marches like " Force ten from Navarone" to great romantic sounding pieces like "Deadly Stranger" and the love theme from 633 Sqadron. I also really like the selections from "Monte Carlo or Bust"(almost seven minutes long) and the selections from "Those magnificent men in Their flying machines" (six minutes long). Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic do a great job performing all the pieces, and add another great cd to the Chandos movie series. This is a must have for fans of Ron Goddwin or great film music in general. It well deserves the 5 stars and maybe even more.
Enjoyable!.......2007-01-10
Ron Goodwin is a fine composer. I particularly enjoyed listening to the music from the early 1960's Miss Marple films, starring Margaret Rutherford. But, to let one know; the Marple music is different from most of the Goodwin scores on this CD. His music is mostly of the rousing march or military variety.
None Better.......2006-10-31
Goodwin's music is outstanding. His World War II scores are outstanding. They have drive and purpose. They sound good too.
those magnificent men in their flying machines.......2005-08-05
This CD provides a range of music mainly from films and concerned with epic war dramas all from the pen of the well known Ron Goodwin. Films such as 633squadron, submarine - X, operation strongbow, force ten from navarone, where eagles dare are just some which are represented. I was particularly looking for the title'Those magnificant men in their flying machines' to add to a slide show of vintage planes in flight and on exhibition. This fitted the bill just fine.

Battle of Britain.......2007-01-23
Ron Goodwin is awesome. This Soundtrack again shows his genius of producing great stirring (military)music for an equally great film. His main title and "Aces High" march are great works of music and the other pieces are also great. Walton 's score is also really good(especially his Battle of Britain march and Battle in the Air). The two scores for the film are put together in this great Cd. A must buy for all film music lovers.
Crank this up in your car CD player!.......2005-05-03
I remember watching this film at the flicks in 1970. How quaint it is now to see real aeroplanes! Wonderful film and a superb soundtrack, especially the foot tapping "Aces High" and the one William Walton composition retained for the film "Battle in the Air" The stirring "Battle of Britain March" brings it to a great conclusion.
One of the Great War-Film Scores.......2004-06-11
Ron Goodwin is one of the most underrated film composers of his time. Single-handedly he made music for war films into something of an art form with "Where Eagles Dare," "Operation Crossbow," and especially "The Battle of Britain." His stirring main theme will always call to mind the soaring beauty of British Spitfires and Hurricanes, and the few courageous pilots who held the breach against the Nazi scourge in the summer of 1940. But equally worthy of note is his wonderful German march. Indeed, it ranks as one of the best in the genre. There was a controversy with the film that involved the music. Originally, Sir William Walton was to do the score and in fact he produced some very interesting music. In the end it was not quite what director Guy Hamilton and producer Harry Saltzman had in mind, however, and Goodwin was brought in. The current version of the film includes elements of both scores, oddly enough. Most of Goodwin's music is still there, but two elements of Walton's score are also evident ("Battle in the Air" and the "Finale"). The recent release by Varese is an updated version of the RKO CD of 1999 with new notes, artwork and updated sound. It is remarkable in that it includes both Goodwin's score (including his own "End Title" which is arguably the better ending)and the music written by Walton, as did the earlier version. This is a rare treat for film buffs. The new release is very nicely packaged with notable production values and a reasonable price.

"The blizzard goes on but still they must fly".......2007-05-14
I'm sure you remember the opening sequence. A lone German transport aircraft flies past snow-capped mountains. The credits appear, in a blood-red Gothic font. We hear martial drums that slowly gather in volume, and then with a loud blare the orchestra starts playing a grandiose melody that sounds as cold and forbidding as the scenery. Where Eagles Dare is a suspenseful, exciting film, and the music really lifts it up.
This is a two-disc release of Ron Goodwin's soundtrack, put out by Film Score Monthly, and available both here and on their website. It is a limited edition, but it is not too expensive, and it is still in print. It sounds great on headphones. The second disc has Goodwin's music for Operation Crossbow, I film I have not seen. I have only skimmed through the second disc. There is some source music from Where Eagles Dare at the end of the disc, and two alternative takes, which have different percussion arrangements to the original tracks. The album has several pages of annotations and a little biography of Ron Goodwin. I like to smell the booklet.
The music for Where Eagles Dare can be divided into two halves. The first half of the disc has the most variety, and is the easiest to listen to in one sitting. The second half of the disc suffers from having too many minor variations of the Main Theme. It is a wonderful Main Theme, though. It consists of a dramatic brass fanfare followed by a loud Morse code freak-out towards the end. Both of these elements are used throughout the score, although with a "suspense theme" that appears most purely in the "Intermission Playout". "Before Jump / Death of Harrod", "Death of Radio Engineer", and "Smith Triumphs over Nazis" are quiet and cold and mysterious, with churning strings and rumbling kettle drums. A lot of the music reminds me of John Williams' score for Raiders of the Lost Ark; perhaps Steven Spielberg asked Williams to channel the still-living spirit of Ron Goodwin.
Whereas the first half of Where Eagles Dare has lots of suspense, the second half of the film consists of gunfights and chases and explosions, and the music reflects this. Unfortunately the second half of the disc is a bit numbing, because it is basically a rehash of the music from the first half of the disc. The two elements of the Main Theme are repeated several times, with only minor orchestral variations. "The Chase", "Journey Through the Castle" and "Escape from the Cable Car" are all cut from the some cloth, and they don't add anything to the music you have already heard. The only real deviations are "Chase to the Airfield" and the slower "Descent and Fight on the Cable Car". "Chase to the Airfield" is a variation of the Main Theme, but it is a creative variation rather than a slightly shorter repeat. You could easily condense the album down to half an hour of core musical material.
Still, this is nitpicking - you don't have to listen to the album all the way through (it's one and a quarter hours long). With the right sequencing it is a cold, atmospheric piece of music that barely sounds almost forty years old.
Where Eagles Dare / Operation Crossbow.......2005-10-01
Ron Goodwin is one of my very favourite composers and the release of two of his recordings is definitely cause for celebration. These are original recordings thus the sound quality betrays its age. Nevertheless, it is highly recommended if only for what I believe is the very first release of the Operation Crossbow soundtrack. You can almost feel yourself strapped in the tiny cockpit of a V-1 manned flying bomb, or tremble at the terrible sight of the first V-2 ballistic missile liftoff. If anything, Operation Crossbow should be the subject of a new recording (Where Eagles Dare already has).

If you've read this far, you're probably considering purchasing this CD because you're a fan of the fine British air war films and their soundtracks from which the selections contained therein are taken. Except that they're NOT, in fact, taken from the soundtracks: they're copied, very poorly, by a British "concert" band, the kind you can hear on any Sunday afternoon on any bandstand in any public garden in Blighty. Buyer beware then, mate. But I say, old boy, it would be awfully jolly if you could manage the genuine article sometime, what, there's a good chap. Pip, pip, cheerio!

Customer Reviews:
Beautifully packaged, masterfully engineered, a truly rare gem this limited edition 2-CD set is!.......2007-01-25
The Shoes Of The Fisherman was a wonderful film set at the height of the cold war between the Western nations and the Soviet Union. The film shows us a planet on the brink of war and chaos. China is headed towards starvation, and the world's superpowers are ready to engage in a battle that will mutually sure their own destruction. From the tumult emerges a Pope who aims to bring peace. And the film's climax should be a lesson for today's leaders about finding the courage to love and care for others regardless of the cost. The Shoes Of The Fisherman was wonderfully acted and shot. with a cast including screen legends Anthony Quinn, John Sir John Gielgud, and the great Sir Laurence Oliver. Add to this a moving soundtrack by Alex North and you have a near perfect film. I never thought that I would ever see this soundtrack on CD but here it is! And the producers have thrown in a couple of other scores by North as well. Probably the best piece in this collection is the 'Coronation' scene's music. It truly sounds as though it was written for the crowning of a Pope. It also reminds me a bit of the music of John Tavener.
One of the nicest features of this two disc set is the packaging and appearance. each disc is a 'picture disc' with different image of Quinn as Pope Kiril on each CD. And the liner notes contain all sorts of information and colour photos of the film. I wish all my favourite movies of this era (or any era for that matter) were given this sort of attention.
You may also notice on this 2-CD set that it is a limited edition of only a few thousand copies, making it a genuine collectors item. But if you miss out, fear not. works this great always find their way pack into reprinting. I think that will be the case with this glorious soundtrack to one of the greatest films of this genre.
Brilliant, the kind of movie music nobody writes any more.......2006-06-08
I picked this up used after reading numerous rave reviews, and boy am I glad I did. Alex North is considered one of the greatest film composers, and his "Cleopatra" score is one of my first movie music memories.
This album presents the complete score to "Fisherman," which is filled with memorable themes and gorgeous orchestrations. Apparently North used elements of his score for "2001," which was rejected by Stanley Kubrick, in this film. It's a highly entertaining listen and displays a playful ease with the sounds of the orchestra that reminds me of John Williams at his best.
The sound can best be described as "Spartacus" meets "Doctor Zhivago." There's a heavy Russian influence, since that's where the film's Pope, played by Anthony Quinn, comes from. The epic music for the Vatican is powerful and stirring without feeling corny or lapsing into stereotypical "religious" sounds.
As if that's not good enough, the second disc also has the complete soundtrack album to "Where Eagles Dare," which I thoroughly enjoyed too.
