4 out of 5 stars Great Hungarian Music.......2007-05-20

I think there is some room for confusion the way this album is marketed. I have a hunch some people are buying this album thinking it is Sandor Lakatos. There is a difference between Sandor Lakatos and Sandor Deki Lakatos. They are two different people. In fact, Deki Lakatos is Sandor's son. There is also Sandor Deki Lakatos Jr. The Lakatos dynasty (which is exactly what it is) carries on a long tradition of playing excellent Hungarian music. For me though, no one comes close to the father, except maybe Boross Lajos.

"Music from Hungary" is a good CD to buy for those familiar and not familiar with Hungarian music. As I said the Lakatos family is well known in Hungary for their amazing skill, so musicians and Hungarian music lovers will instantly take note of Lakatos' great skill while the unfamiliar listener will sit back and enjoy something they have probably never heard before.

I admit I'm a little bias when it comes to this kind of music as I am Hungarian and a musician (as well as the son of a son of a musician) who plays this kind of music. It is something I have heard everyday of my life. It is music which gives me the most joy to listen to. So if I gush at this music, keep in mind, I simply can't help myself. At the same time I want to remain objective and keep in mind how other people might react. Those who do not like or know very little about this kind of music.

Most of the songs on the CD actually are not really Hungarian. Over half of the songs are Romanian. Kind of makes you wonder whats on the "Music from Romania" CD! Half of the songs were written by the great Romanian composer Grigoras Dinicu. There is "The Lark", "March Hora", "The Mail" and a "Hora Dance"

My favorite tracks on the album are "The Lark" (great cimbalom solo. Sadly, as usual, no mention of who it is. It would be nice to know whose playing I'm copying) for something a little different, more slower "Valse Triste" is just beautiful. A duet between cimbalom and violin. I also like the medley of Hungarian dances (No. 1, 5 and 6). The old standby's are here and played quite well, "Monti's Csardas" and "Whistle Hora".

For the price of the CD honestly it is well worth it. I'm glad I bought the CD. I wish amazon had more Hungarian CDs at such resonable prices. For that matter, I wish amazon had more Hungarian CDs at ANY price from artists as talented as Lakatos.

Bottom-line: Great sample of what the Lakatos dynasty is all about. Good, fast arrangements of old standard Hungarian and Romanian songs that lovers of this type of music should enjoy!

It should be listed under classical music! Maestro Lakatos is a true Virtuoso!

5 out of 5 stars Music from Hungary.......2006-03-10

I just loved the Hungarian music on this CD. The delivery and the condition were excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A giant musician!.......2005-08-26

Lakatos bas become a reference by himself at the moment to measure the grade of performance of any particular ensemble evolved with this musical field.
Lakatos impregnates the whole Band of inspired mood and vigorous pronouncement. His results can not be better expressed: an immediate rapport will be established between you and Lakatos since you listen the first bars of any of his themes.
The Magyar spirit, the Csárdás or the ancient gypsy songs find in Sandor a robust expressiveness and assertiveness interpretative.
Go for this extraordinary compilation that resumes, takes back and preserves the vitality and charm of this fabulous and untamed millenary musical genre.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but..........2005-05-06

...almost one third of the tracks on this disc are not Hungarian, but Romanian music played by Hungarians, though it doesn't explicitly say so (I'm speaking of tracks 2, 8, 10, 11 and 15).
Firstly, the Lark ("Ciocârlia") is a famous traditional song composed by Romanian Gypsy musician Anghelus Dinicu in 1889, based on a Romanian folk tune. The song was later made popular by his grandson, virtuoso violinist Grigoras Dinicu and by violinist/composer George Enescu.
As for the "horas": The 'hora' is a Romanian folk dance music found in all parts of the country. And, actually, the track "March Hora" contains themes from the piece "Hora staccato" by Grigoras Dinicu.
The horas on this CD are definitely Romanian dances, especially in their lively parts, with some slow parts thrown in, consisting of a waltzy-restaurant-style music.

5 out of 5 stars magic.......2007-02-02

I recently bought this album, because Mr. Lakatos was giving a concert and I was going to see him. I had never heard of him, so I asked my violinist sister if she knew anything about him. She told me he was incredible and not to be missed.

The CD is amazing! If you can afford it, get it; it's a treasure. There's fire in it, and I couldn't stop listening again and again. I also love the other musicians in the ensemble, and the fact that they use traditional instruments (complete with cymbalon - something I have only seen in Eastern European pubs).

And then I went to the concert.

Roby Lakatos is one of those things for whom the word artist seems too weak; or at least, if you call him an artist, try to whisper the word gently. Make sure you don't disturb anything. Never mind that his technique is breath-taking. The real wonder is how he makes his violin sing. I had tears in my eyes, a first for me at a concert. Maybe sometimes, something happens somewhere in the universe, and we receive a gift. It might be called Gould, or Monk, or Heifetz, or Bach. It might also be called Roby Lakatos.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular CD.......2007-01-28

The quality of this CD is magnificent. I paid $40 for it, and I would gladly do it again. Roby Lakatos and his group is one of the most exceptional musical groups around today, and I would recommend them to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2000-09-18

This is one of my favorite CDs ever. I don't know much about classical music to know if this should be considered very good in classical music circles, but I know what I like hearing. It's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Music that makes you want to dance.......2000-07-10

This is a great CD, the playing is virtuosic and it's technically quite good. The slow tracks are also done skillfully with lots of variety in sound and interesting glissandos. I recommend it highly for classical and non-classical musicians alike- it's fun to listen to and the ensemble is pretty tight. Some of the folk tunes are so fast and with such a great beat it's hard to sit still while listening to this recording!

    Album Details

Violinist Roby Lakatos is a Force of Nature. Though Practically Unknown in America, his Reputation in Europe is Immense and Those Fortunate Enough to have Heard Him Live Routinely Are Spellbound by his Remarkable Virtuosity. Because of his Populist Leanings (His Training Owes More to Salon Or Gypsy Fiddling Tradition Than Academia) Some have Compared Him to Andre Rieu but That's Ultimately Only Partially True. After Listening to the Sirba in in E Flat Major Or his Stunning Transcription of Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody Here for Instance, Comparisons with Nathan Milstein Or Henryk Szeryng Are Far More Apt.

The music of Hungary's Roma tribes is one of Eastern Europe's most durable and influential folkways. It has turned up in classical music composed by Lizst, Kodály, and Bartók--the latter two were famous ethnomusicologists who preserved innumerable endangered tunes--and remains an important component in Jewish klezmer, as well as other folk and pop styles. The present group was formed with the intention of preserving their Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg cultural heritage for future generations. Known in their homeland simply as Ternipe (youth), the band's male and female singers are accompanied by acoustic guitar and mandolin with occasional chromatic harmonica licks, plus a percussion consort consisting of a struck metal can and clicking sticks, plus irrepressible foot-stomping. All native Romany speakers, the members are avid song-collectors and the results of their field research can be heard on this album. With harmony-drenched melodies, thumping rhythms, and chiming plucked strings that sometimes evoke recollections of Greek tavern music, their sound is remarkably infectious, but nonetheless harbors an underlying, persistent tinge of melancholy--it's beautiful, exuberant, rustic, sophisticated, and miles deep. --Christina Roden

      Album Description

Introducing Bela Lakatos & The Gypsy Youth Project tells the story of Hungarian Gypsy youth, with poignant tales of lost love, hardship and reflections on the life of an outcast people. Known as 'Ternipe' (meaning 'youth') at home, the group - which is predominantly vocal, with percussion from sticks, foot-stomping and a metal can, and an acoustic guitar and mandolin - was formed with the aim of ensuring the survival of Gypsy folk music and to launch the next generation of Hungarian Gypsy music.

On this disc, recorded live during five concerts at the Auditorium du Louvre in Paris, several world-class soloists come together for the intimate give-and-take of chamber music; unhampered by technical limitations, they revel in their collaboration, and the results are spectacular. The host is Russian violinist Vadim Repin; putting his consummate virtuosity and ravishing, variable tone entirely at the service of the music, he captures the Debussy sonata's colorful impressionism, rhythmic freedom, languid, delicate atmosphere, grotesquerie, and changing moods; the Schubert duo's charm and joyful radiance, lilting, flexible phrasing and rhythm, ardor and simplicity of expression. Berezovsky and Gothoni aid and abet Repin's unerring feeling for style and idiom. In Prokofiev's Sonata for Two Violins, Barachovsky takes the first part, but both players' sound is so rich and soaring, their brilliance so scintillating, their approach so exuberant and impetuous, that one cannot tell them apart. The bluesy movement from Ravel's sonatina sounds gorgeous, and the final Hungarian piece with a gypsy band is a wild, unbridled run-around. A must for violin aficionados. --Edith Eisler

          3 out of 5 stars what's new: early 21st century.......2005-10-12

this is an anthology, a sampler, of what's current in jazz and classical music played by jazz artists. it serves the purpose of familiarizing. however, nothing leaped out and pushed me to want to listen to any of the cd's these selections were first recorded.
