New Orleans, Vol. 1
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Preservation Hall has been a New Orleans landmark since 1961, when it first began providing a regular stage for the city's traditional musicians. It quickly became the object of regular pilgrimages for traditional musicians and enthusiasts around the world. By the time this recording was made in 1976, the official band had coalesced around the Humphrey brothers, Percy on trumpet and Willie on clarinet, veterans already in their 70s. Their age shows only in their fidelity to the music's repertoire and instrumentation, with the band still using a banjo player, Narvin Kimball, and the younger tubaist Allan Jaffe in place of a string bass. In this vigorous traditional jazz, the band brings lifetimes of received musical wisdom to hymns like "Over in Gloryland" and Dixieland warhorses like "Bill Bailey." --Stuart Broomer

In jazz's childhood, Bix Beiderbecke was the only cornet player to rival Satchmo in terms of influence on other musicians and on the development of the genre. Armstrong's syncopated delivery, his blues shadings, his unique phrasing--in short, his swing--became, rightly so, the benchmark, the standard by which jazz improvisation was not only judged, but actually defined. In a way, Bix represented both a practical and symbolic alternative to Armstrong. Though he was completely self-taught and couldn't read music, Bix's tone was incredibly pure, full, and lush, and his style was cooler, more restrained (but not reserved), and more plaintive than Louis's hot, ebullient playing--even though his actual tone remained bright and his note choices forceful. All of these 20 cuts come from 1927, and many of them rank among the finest performances of that classic era nudged between Dixieland and swing. A key component of these successes is Frankie Trumbauer, a remarkably fluent and lyrical C-melody sax player who was Beiderbecke's close friend and musical kindred spirit. The septet cuts from February and May are uniformly excellent, but "Singin' the Blues" (featuring Eddie Lang's prominent single-string guitar support), "Riverboat Shuffle," "I'm Comin' Virginia," and "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" are astonishing landmarks in jazz history. Also worth noting are two trio cuts featuring Beiderbecke on piano supporting Trumbauer and Lang, and "In a Mist (Bixology)," a Bix piano solo full of bold, unorthodox melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Sound could be better.......2006-10-12
One of the other reviews commented how this disc had no surface noise? Well, they're right. The noise reduction (sounds like an older analog process) removed enough of the upper frequencies that the label chose to add echo after the fact to cover up their handiwork. So, "Blue River" is a brilliant performance . . . but it appears here in mediocre sound. For my money, the best sounding set out there NOT on Mosaic is the 2-cd 'Jazz Tribune Vol 48' on RCA (a US release).
There is a WORSE sounding Beiderbecke cd out there, with Orrin Keepnews' name on it yet. BUT . . . that's another story.
Bix Beiderbeck Vol 1.......2006-01-29
I'm ejoying very much this CD, Excellent remastered. No needle noise like firsts recordes. The first I've hear about it!
Epitomizes Easy Listening.......2005-02-03
I've had this CD for a couple years now. I never tire of it. No matter what the circumstances of my life, I can't help but smile when I play this CD. If I'm feeling down Bix lifts me up. If I feeling good Bix helps me celebrate. I can think of no better recommendation.
Ahead Of His Time.......2001-08-28
Beiderbecke and Armstrong were the two giants of the horn in the '20s. Bix died too soon to have any great influence on other hornmen, but his music would live on in the "cool school" and "west coast" jazz of the '50s. His use of the whole tone scale, 9th and 13th notes and other improvisational skills would become part of the jazz scene in later years. This CD is a compilation of some of his greatest work. Singin the Blues and I'm Comin' Virginia are the first two jazz ballads recorded.
I like it!.......2001-08-08
This is the album that turned me on to Bix! In conjunction with Volume 2, I haven't found a better collection of Bix's music! Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Great Music, Crummy Packaging.......2007-03-20
As the owner of several discs in the Oldies But Goodies series for quite a number of years, I recently ordered an additional six discs to "fill in the holes" in my collection. Much to my dismay, all arrived packaged in flimsy, cardboard "albums", rather than the substantial jewel cases used for my earlier purchases. In addition, some of the color combinations used on the packages (gold on red/gold on purple) make it nearly impossible to read the artists names without holding the package under a lamp.
Try as I might, I was unable to find any information in the product details that mentioned the type of packaging. I intend to handle and play these discs for years, not just rip the songs to mp3's and load them on a hand-held player.
In the interest of full-disclosure, and to improve customer satisfaction, I believe Amazon should include product packaging information.
Bad CD copy.......2007-01-17
I played this CD and was not happy. I had to return the item becasue it skipped really bad on almost every song.
Ageless Goodies.......2006-11-10
My husband and I were high school sweethearts and these were the songs we would dance to. And like all teens back then we would rush home from school to watch American Bandstand.
sweet cd, with hard to find blue moon by MXPX.......1999-01-06
excellent cd. definately get it, if you like punk remakes of classic songs. MxPx does an awesome blue moon.

Customer Reviews:
wonderful jazz compilation.......2006-03-02
If you are new to jazz or an old time jazz lover this mix will definitely make you happy for hours and hours. It's beautiful.
Outstanding introduction to Jazz.......2005-02-22
I highly recommend this set. As a (reasonably) young person that didn't really know much about Jazz, I purchased this set on a whim. I am very glad I did! If you are interested in learning about a wide range of good, listenable music, this is a great set. Has a wide range of Jazz artists and styles on it and every song is great. I cannot vouch for the other volumes of this series, but Volume 1 is outstanding.
It's a great place for an all around introduction, or to listen to find out artists/groups that you want to find out more about.

good but not great.......2006-12-22
You cannot go wrong with the "Mountain Stage" series. It is just a matter of whether you are a fan of the various artists for each disc. The series is also good for exposing you to songs that you would, otherwise, never listen to.
The best tune is "Twighlight" by Rick Danko and Grath Hudson. It is a beautiful and emotional song. "O Marie" by Daniel Lanois is also of very high quality. "Such a Night" by Dr. John features magnificent piano playing. Richard Thompson could do no wrong and "Shoot out the Lights" is one of his better hard rockers. The Buckwheat Zydeco closer is a fitting ending and is a smoking hot rocker.
I love NRBQ but "Yes, yes, yes" is weak for a group famous for their high energy and terrific musicanship.
The rest of the songs are okay.
If you check out all of the mountain stage cds and pick the ones where you have an affinity for the artists then you will definitely be pleased.
This series is the best collection of eclectic artists both famous and cult favorites.
Cool.......2001-07-11
This CD is very good, as any of you who are familiar with Mountain Stage would anticipate. Like usual, host Larry Groce steals the show. His version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" is an all-timer. Danko and Hudson are great as well. Groce and company's cover of "Positively 4th Street" should be released.

RUBY AT HIS BEST.......2004-06-12
Of all of Ruby's LPs and CDs this and Volume Two show Ruby at his most relaxed and lyrical, with mature, full tone and amazing inventiveness (his unstoppable rolling notes often sound like a saxophone). That he is sided by Scott Hamilton on tenor, Howard Alden on guitar and Dave MeKenna on piano only adds to the joy. Ruby collectors should not miss this and Vol. Two.
It's like "Love and Marriage ... ".......2001-04-27
The old song, "Love and Marriage," said it best: "You can't have one without the other." And you can't have this CD without owning Volume 1 of Ruby Braff's recordings with the New England Songhounds. If anything, Volume 2 is even better because it contains some songs left off the cassette version. Scott Hamilton and Dave McKenna join Braff in being as good or better than on the first volume.
Great jazz combo music!.......2001-04-27
Ruby Braff ... Scott Hamilton ... Dave McKenna. They were among the best of the current cornet, tenor sax and piano players when they recorded this a decade ago, and they remain among the best today. That's all you really need to know about this fine Concord CD, except that the tunes are as excellent as the musicians. It should be a part of any jazz collection.
This Ruby is a real gem.......1999-03-15
Cited as "the greatst lyric cornetist working today," Ruby Braff teams up on this CD recorded on 4/30/91 with Scott Hamilton, Howard Alden, Dave McKenna, Frank Tate and Alan Dawson to produce an eminently listenable collection of twelve standards in a very smooth, mild jazz style. The selection of titles is well suited to the artist(s) and the renditions are superb. This CD stands near the top of my list of all time jazz favorites.

Let there be drums!.......2004-11-06
This series is designed to spotlight drumming, as it relates to rock and roll. This volume spotlights the 1950s. Max Weinberg selected some of his favorite songs with his favorite drummers. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get every song he wanted to use. The most obvious ommision is Elvis Presley's drummer D.J. Fontana. "Hound Dog" really should be here, but what can you do? Anyway, the rest of the songs are all great. Of course, a lot of them have great drum solos, but there are a few of them that have very subtle drumming which you really wouldn't take much notice of the drumming. But Max Weinberg knows more about drumming than the rest of us, so pay attention to the drumming in these songs. Even if you don't care about drumming, this is still a great album of 1950s rock and roll. Highly recommended.
Great Series!! Why Out Of Print??.......2002-08-14
Max is bigger now than ever, and that's not even counting the new reunion tour with Springsteen and the E St. Band. This compilation of three discs, together with the accompanying (also out of print) book "The Big Beat", must have been a labor of love for Max. But it's also an ESSENTIAL part of the music collection of anyone who loves great drumming! Which has been kind of important in rock & roll!! So why did the record company drop this series from its current catalogue? The Big Five record companies are worse than the five mob families that once ruled New York City!
Drums Galore.......1998-06-21
Super selections highlight this overview of great 50's drummers and their best-known beats. What places this CD in a higher category than other music appreciation types is the presence of Max Weinberg's endearing and insightful liner notes, which discuss each of the 18 tracks with reverence and adulation.

Fiyo too thin.......2005-10-10
There are better live performances of Meters and related material out there. This concert seems thin in its sound texture, not very powerful, and generally and uninspired. In contrast, george Porter Jr and the Runnin' Pardners'CD, Things aint what they used to be, is much tighter and energized, and the real horns are great. So get that one if you can find it
It Is Hard To Sit Still.......2004-01-16
This band is about a good as funk gets, and with a great wailing guitar as added pleasure. It is very hard to sit still when listening to this. It makes we want to get up & dance. I first saw this band like at the House of Blues in New Orleans, and this album is a faithful reflection of that great experience. Buy this album; you won't be disappointed. Then go to the band's web site and ask for more.
Mind blowing funk/R&B, excellent for the jamband crowd, too........2003-07-10
You can't get any better than this disc. I was completely blown away by these guys live, and then I found the disc as really capturing their live show. They can just jam from one tune to another without stopping or slowing down. This version of the band doesn't have a studio recording out, but hearing the band with guitarist Brian Stoltz, who hasn't recorded with the Funky Meters yet, is worth paying double for this disc! Art Neville and George Porter, from the original Meters, are certainly in fine form here, too. Definitely don't hesitate to get this piece of fine music, from a historic band!
Fitting album for the funkiest band in the WORLD.......2003-03-15
Its only does this band justice when they release a live album! The studio records are amazing but the live experience is what makes the meters/ funky meters incredible. Art Neville and George Porter jr. recruit two of nola's top musicians (russell Batiste/Brian Stoltz) and they add a little spice to the gumbo leaving what zigaboo and leo did as original members and its an amazing thing! This album leaves me waiting for fiyo volume 2.. If you get a chance go catch this band live, u will leave wanting more... They are hitting jazz fest in nola, bonnaroo so catch em live. Lets not forget zigaboo and leo either, they started this thing that contiues to grow with each new generation! The funky meters are the best band out today!

The Original Group is the Only Group.......2003-04-14
I saw the original Preservation Hall Band several times with the Humphreys playing clarinet and trumpet. If you want the best of the best, get this first, and then the second and third volumes. I realize that nothing stays the same (the Humpreys were already in their eighties when I saw them), but there is no better listening on the face of the earth. I bought the vinyl albums at the shows, and still listen to them when I can, although it's a little hard to take them in the car with me. Thus the CDs. By the way, if you go to www.preservationhall.com, you can pick up an absolute gem called Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall band. Recorded in 1964. One of the best 2 1/2 hours of dixieland ever recorded, and almost completely unknown, since you can only get it there.
