5 out of 5 stars Bizet's Unknown Masterpiece Other Than Carmen.......2005-08-15

George Bizet. The name is synonymous with his opera Carmen. But few know of his spectacular religious choral work- his Te Deum. This Catholic Mass has been composed by several composers, including Bach, Charpentier and Gounod. A Te Deum was even written into Puccini's Tosca. Bizet's Te Deum is very operatic (very much like Verdi's Requiem) and is energetic, dramatic and highly spiritual. I found the work uplifting, especially the finale. The Poulenc piece - Stabat Mater is a fine intro that leads to Bizet's piece. But Bizet's magnificent, gorgeously sung Te Deum is definately the highlight. This recording marks the first appearance of Bizet's Te Deum on record. Looking at it from a musical perspective, the two religious works are very different. Poulenc (who composed the opera Les Dialoge Des Carmelites about bold nuns in the French Revolution)is a mystic in his composition, with religious themes written everywhere but very modern and atonal as compared to the 19th century work of Bizet, who remains French even when composing the Te Deum. This is a great recording all hardcore classical music lovers ought to own. It's a rare treasure.
