Mozart: Concertos for piano No24; Concertos for piano No22

Murray Perahia has recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos, and his effortlessly brilliant accounts can be recommended across the board. The playing is on the highest level--vibrant, unfailingly beautiful, wonderfully acute in its grasp of style and expression. Equally outstanding is the work of the English Chamber Orchestra, which Perahia leads from the keyboard. The recorded sound, while not as radiant as the music-making, is consistently good and well balanced from disc to disc. --Ted Libbey

Two first rate concertos and performances.......2007-01-22
Murray Perahia's performance of Concerto 22 is the finest I've ever heard of this music. Concerto 22 is the underated one of the five great concertos 20-24. Perahia's performance is full of love and understanding and beautifully played.
Concerto 24 is almost as good. This performance was made when Perahia was young and he catches the sadness in the music but not quite the tragedy that Clara Haskil (Haskil/Markevitch) and Wilhelm Kempff (Kempff/Leitner) do. Still this performance is in the top 3.
Exquisite.......2004-01-22
For years I had thought no one could touch Wilhelm Kempff's version of the 22nd concerto, but Perahia has done so. His playing is perfectly suited to Mozart, both in tempo and in dynamics. The recording is AAD and, as such, isn't perfect. But the playing simply outweighs any sound considerations. And the C Minor concerto, while lesser known, is equally powerful. This is a great CD!
great album.......2001-12-23
This album was one of the first classical CDs I bought. The sound is not first-rate, but quite acceptable as compared to some of Perahia's other analog Mozart piano concerto recordings under the same label. In terms of the performance, both concertos are superlative; K. 482 captures Perahia's sensitive playing more convincingly than Brendl's version for Philips while the outer movements of K. 491 is suprisingly dramatic and intense, coming from Perahia. The final movement, in particular, was played with an electricity that caused Kempff's and Curzon's versions to sound rather too cautious in comparison. In the slow movement, however, Perahia is at home with his characteristic delicate passagework. All around, this is one of the most satisfying recordings of any collection.
An Exquisite Delight!!.......2001-10-22
Mozart made full use of the woodwind instruments in these two "big" concertos, and the wind players of the English Chamber Orchestra are up to the task. Mozart only used clarinets in three of his piano concertos, and these are two of them. Especially in the E flat concerto, the clarinets really stand out. The awesome middle movement of this concerto breaks into a virtual serenade for the wind players, with an absolutely eloquent interplay between the bassoon and flute. Murray Perahia, as always, plays with great poetic feeling. The brooding C minor concerto also has wonderful woodwind writing and the ECO and Perahia are in top form. Highly recommended!
