Ponchielli's La Gioconda: Complete Opera
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Enzo, the tenor lead in this opera, is one of the few roles in Placido Domingo's repertoire that he hasn't recorded before, so this release is particularly welcome. He is in remarkably good voice for a tenor in his 60s, with the tenorial "ping" still exciting at the top of the range despite a slightly pinched production and the baritonal rest of the voice warm and welcome. If he's occasionally a bit short of breath, well, it's still a stunning performance, and Domingo seems as involved in the two-dimensional character as possible. But this opera is nothing without a great Gioconda, and mezzo-turned-soprano Violeta Urmana is splendid. Her weighty, grand tone is darkly colored and expressive; she can softly float a beautiful high B-flat or ride over the orchestra with equal ease, and if she misses the sheer beauty of Caballé or the perfection of Callas, who doesn't? Urmana is a superb artist. Lado Ataneli exhibits a fine baritone as the evil Barnaba, lacking only an audible sneer and some more play with the text; creamy-voiced mezzo Luciana D'Intino does what she can with the good-but-puzzled Laura; Elisabetta Fiorillo's dusky contralto is well suited to Gioconda's blind, saintly mother, and as Alvise, bass Roberto Scandiuzzi's voice seems to have fallen apart. Marcello Viotti leads the most thrilling and, indeed, orchestrally beautiful performance of this opera on disc, and the sound is big and rich--just right for this larger-than-life melodrama. Don't throw your Callas Gioconda away, but this one is marvelous. --Robert Levine

Amazon.com essential recording
The mercilessly self-critical Maria Callas considered her singing in the last act here among the most satisfying of her records, saying that "it's all there for anyone who cares to understand or wishes to know what I was about." "Suicidio" emerges less a histrionic soliloquy than an interior, multi- dimensional monologue. Moreover, the soprano is in better voice than her 1952 Cetra Gioconda, which, however, boasts a more vibrant supporting cast, greater energy from the podium (especially in the first act), and avoids a small but not insignificant cut Antonino Votto makes here in the final act. EMI furnishes full texts and translations, an excellent essay that places this recording in context, and excellent remastered sonics. --Jed Distler

CALLAS CARRIES THE SHOW.......2006-07-12
This recording was done in September, 1959, when Callas was right in the middle of the marital quadrangle with Aristotle Onasis. She had just ended her marriage and was all over the front pages of the newspapers. It is amazing, that in the midst of all of this media frenzy, Callas was able to go into La Scala and record such a performance as that heard here. Callas is in thrilling vocal condition here, and she creates a vivid and compelling characterization of the tormented street singer. There are actually a few instances when her top notes are more secure than they were on her earlier 1952 recording (!) Unfortunately, Callas had to carry much of this performance by herself. Fiorenza Cossotto, certainly a great mezzo, is heard at the very beginning of her career, and the power and authority she later acquired is not very evident here, though she certainly sings well. Also, an equally youthful Piero Cappuccilli provides a somewhat non-menacing Barnaba, though the potential of his voice is certainly obvious (like Cossotto, he also went on to a great career in Europe). Ivo Vinco is a sonorous Alvise. The real weakness in this cast, however, is the tenor Pier Miranda Ferraro, who never really "made it". His singing is merely adequate, but in the company of Callas and even the very young Cossotto and Cappuccilli, it comes off as less than even that.
The stereo sound here is very good, and the sound balances are excellent. I cannot give this recording an unqualified rave (due to the weakness of the tenor, and to a lesser extent, the work of Cossotto and Cappuccilli, both for whom the best work was still in the future), but Callas' performance is so outstanding, and her singing so persuasive that it washes away all else.
A STUPENDOUS FAREWELL.......2005-10-04
In 1960, I purchased this wonderful recording on vinyl. At that time, there were those that were saying Callas was "loosing her voice." In this recording Maria certainly refuted that opinion. Maria was in spectacular voice for this recording of "La Giaconda" sounding as if she had not done the huge amount of very "heavy-duty" singing she had done during the decade preceding this recording in order to establish herself as the leading Prima Donna of the age (as it turns out, of all ages). Along with being in astoundly "good voice" for this recording, her interpretive skills are at their peak! She makes the heroine a living, breathing creature NOT just an "operatic heroine". Therefore, I, in my youth, could not understand why some individuals thought that Maria Callas' art (voice) was deteriorating. Sadly, I lived through Maria's "crash and burn"-always hoping "for the miracle" that never came. Anyway this is a fantastic recording capturing "La Divina" at her very best. Perhaps this recording does indeed give credence to the saying "Before the candle flickers out, it flares for one more magnificent moment" as was so succulently phrased by a previous reviewer. Maria is truly magnificent in this recording.
After so many years, it is most moving, for me, to return to this recording in this wonderful format. EMI has done a spectacular job of restoring and/or enhancing this glorious recording. This time around, I'm just not overwhelmed with Callas alone (as previously); Cossoto and Cappuccilli are spectacular with Votto conducting the hell out of the score. Once again, this recording has "moved" me down to my soul. In retrospect along with the knowledge of what happened in the years that followed this recording, I find this recording to be one of the most emotionally moving experiences of my life.
Brava Brava Brava that is all I can say.......2005-08-29
This is the best recording of La Gioconda period. I just can't put into words on how I personally felt when my ears first listened to this recording. I loved it so much that I listened to it 3 times in a row during my rest day. I just can't stop. I do not need to elaborate the good points of this recording as they were already said by other reviewers. The only reason for other Callas fans not to buy this recording is price. This is an expensive set. But without hesitation I will tell anyone that this is worth it. The price you pay for the purchase is nothing compared to the enjoyment you will get after listening to this recording. In my heart The La Divina is the best no matter what other critics say. This recording is the testament to what I believe.
Flawless Gioconda by a tormented artist.......2004-10-29
La Gioconda was Callas' debut in Italy, back in 1947 in Verona with the then unknown Richard Tucker. It was then and there that Tullio Serafin, this greatest of all "Singer's conductors" saw the great gift behind the shy and young Maria Callas. He invited her to do thr great Wagner-roles with him in Italy and they once performed a miracle, namely that Callas sang the Wagner-Brünnhilde (Walkuere) and Elvira (I Puritani!) in the same week. It was unheard of, impossible... Yet she made it possible. Now what about La Gioconda? I remember listening to Rosa Ponselle's "Suicido" and thinking: What a voice! What an artist! (Ponselle was, in Callas' opinion, the greatest of them all!) Then I heard Callas singing the same lines with those incredible chest-notes where she sounds like a natural contralto! THEN I realised all this was about suicide, about love! Listen to her in the final act, Callas said that anyone who wanted to know what she was about should listen to this. I did. And my heart bled. Not because she wasn't wonderful but because this voice which so many had called ugly was so hauntingly beautiful. There are but a few things that I know to be true but if there's one thing I DO know is that Callas will be worshipped by generations to come.
As for Renata Scotto as Gioconda, pointed out by a horrible basher from California: Scotto becan as a light lyric, listen to her in "La Straniera" for example. Her Gilda, Lucia and Amina are as gorgeous as can be. As far as the drama goes her Adriana, Violetta, Butterfly, Desdemona, Maddalena and Tosca are great. Yet, there's something that Tebaldi disliked about her tackling roles that only spintos and dramatic sopranos can do justice to, these being Elisabetta, Gioconda, Lady Macbeth etc. Not to say that all these aren't amazing but while Callas was a "natural" in these, Scotto had to fight and strain herself to sing these roles. Yet, I love this woman in anything she does and seeing her live as Fedora was a great night, just to give you one example. Scotto called Callas her "unequalled role-model" quoting the fabulous Leonie Rysanek who said the same and who was a divine Gioconda herself.
Great Gioconda.......2004-10-21
It has been said that this is Maria Callas's best and most insightful recording. The voice is not as rounded and secure as the one she boasted on the earlier Cetra 1952 recording (anyone curious about this artist should try to get this recording), but she is absolutely great. Her ability to convey emotions, command of text and shading of words is a lesson for any singer. The cast is rather less refined, with the exception of Cossotto and the young Cappuccilli. This recording belongs in any opera lover's shelf.
There are other excellent recordings of Gioconda out there. Renata Tebaldi recorded the rôle in 1967, and she gives an amazingly dramatic performance, singing, as usual, with golden-toned voice and secure, granitic, dark chest notes. She is well partnered by a superb cast, including the aristocratic Carlo Bergonzi and the formidable Marilyn Horne. The Anita Cerquetti recording is also well worth listening to, for a stupendous dramatic voice, although she finds less light and shadow in her characterization than Callas and Tebaldi. Mario del Monaco was her Enzo on this recording, among other famous artists including Cesare Siepi, Ettore Bastianini and Giulietta Simionato. The Caballé-Pavarotti recording has the most spectacular sound and orchestral direction. However, Caballé takes on the rôle in a rather melancholic mood, singing with heavenly pianissimos, but sounding at times rather strained, especially in the "suicidio" aria (and without the awe-inspiring chest notes of Callas, Tebaldi and Cerquetti). Pavarotti's ringing, golden voice is a treat for the ear.

In case there was a moment in your life when your suspected that Maria Callas was not a driving force in opera in the last half of this century, pick up this set. Apparently unable to give a dull performance, here we get Callas in La Divina as Rossini's flirty Rosina; Verdi's emotion-torn Aida; Catalani's unbelievably sad Wally (a classic performance, by which all others are measured); Bellini's Norma (ditto); Puccini's lovely, youthful Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi; the same composer's frigid, furious Turandot as well as his confused, desparate Manon Lescaut; Verdi's Loenoras--each noble; Meyerbeer's ditzy Dinorah and Delibes's loco Lakme (in some fabulous, high-flying coloratura singing); and at least a dozen more roles. While it's true that her control over her voice varies--the French coloratura arias, from Gounod and Thomas operas, can be pretty acidic--there's never an uninterested reading, never a once-over read-through. You'll get to know the characters as well as their music by hearing Callas as each heroine--indeed, this collection is like a who's who in opera. No music lover should be without it. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Mesmerizing set. La Divina's gift to the world........2006-07-30
I have listened to this 4-cd set numerous times and each occasion yields an abundant harvest. Maria Callas, one of my favorites, thrills, exalts, and saddens the listener to no end. You don't have to be a classical music fan to enjoy and be moved by this music. I cannot find words to substantially explain the beauty and meaning of this set.
Thank you La Divina.
Breathtaking!.......2006-06-11
I am no expert, I just love music. I bought this set in order to get an overview of what Callas offers, boy did I get more than I bargained for. There are many wonderful sopranos, I won't say this one or that one is better... its like good wine, what you choose to drink depends on your mood. Sutherland is purity, Bartoli is sheer joy, Callas is darkness. For me she is the Schubert of the voice and she can make me weep, that is her power, pure and simple.
Callas is Still Opera's Queen.......2005-01-25
With the apparent genius embedded in Callas' singing, it is no wonder that decades after her death, her voice will still echo within the chambers of our living rooms. Her great sense of the bel canto style, combined with the empassioned soul she juxtaposed into her performances, along with her amazing control over the three hundred (acclaimed conductor Nicola Rescigno said this) voices she had, are undeniably the reason why such a controversial singer survived the passing of time with a legion of fans still eager to submit to her amazing and passionate singing. She had the ability to chop a singular, monotonic-sounding instrument to convert it into a million shades of human emotion--something that no great singer was able to do today. She was the divine goddess of opera, able to command any listener to watch and listen to her declaim her roles. It was because of this that she was called "La Divina", and then many years later as "The Voice of the Century". But what defines a Voice of the Century, you might ask? It is the ability to live the life of a character all the while singing the lines, the melodies, the trills, and the embellishments required to bring a certain degree of drama into the role. Meaning there was no need for overornamentation, or such and so. Being the Voix du Secle didn't mean that you could sing coloratura roles so efficiently. If that were so, then Lily Pons would have been the Voice of the Century. Callas did so much more than that. She breathed life into opera, and turned it into the most illustrious and the most highly celebrated of all arts. No other singer can claim to have done that, no matter how amazing the range, how great the tonal quality whatsoever. Only Callas deserves such a title...and she truly was La Divina and The Voice of the Century.
I am also a big fan of Joan Sutherland. I just don't find it right for her to be tackling overly dramatic roles such as Norma, which her middle voices couldn't support. The middle voice is required for Bellini, you know. Joan Sutherland has a perfect vocal technique, but let me let you in on something divulged to me by an authority in music: Joan Sutherland never learned to read notes. She had a perfect sense of hearing, and it was Andre Previn and not Richard Bonynge who introduced the roles to her. Andre Previn would play a note on the piano, and she would just follow by singing. Surprising isn't it that the most celebrated coloratura of our age never learned to read notes? She has a great voice anyhow, but the only other thing that bothered me is that she didn't put her soul into singing. Although her voice remained in her throat until her 60's, the only reason that happened was because she didn't pour out her soul. Callas' technique, although one of the most attractive ever to have walked this planet (she could very well sing anything and be the character), was damaging to the vocal cords. Pouring your soul into the role has a tendency to scratch your instrument. Still, she was the Divine One, and she truly places first as my favorite soprano of all time.
Grand.......2004-05-21
Why won't this Callas-Hater leave Maria alone? If he hates her so much, why did he listen to all her recordings? I doubt that he did, bashing a perfect recording like Callas' Aida shows he hasn't heard it. Even Callas' enemies were floored by her Mexican performances. This collection is absolutely magnificent. La Divina will always be La Divina and no one comes close!
The divine Callas.......2004-05-08
An awesome collection of the most supreme voice in the world! Brava La Divina!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
gigli in his prime.......2001-04-21
Gigli went to US in 1920, having made some tonally beautiful but poorly acted acoustics for 'HMV'. Linking to his appearance at the Met, 'Victor' began a long association of recordings both acoustic & electric, and this album from Romophone is the 1st of 3 dealing with this period. Gigli's tone developed to its full during these recs, parallel with some intrusive bad vocal habits - nobody needs to use aspirates at all, and certainly not to the degree of Gigli. The mix on the album balances opera & song. He was one of the best interpreters of Neapolitan songs, having a more ringing style than Schipa and a more affectionate style than Corelli; perhaps di Stefano was a natural successor? On several tracks he has magnificent partners (e.g. Rethberg, Pinza). Some alternative takes are offered, which provide little extra knowledge about the singers, but make things complete. In summary: attractively toned, Italianate singing, if you can ignore his bad habits. The Obert-Thorn transfers are clear, but can sound oversharp with clinical-sounding hardware plus silver-based cabling.

Customer Reviews:
A Worthy Entry to the Field.......2006-03-11
I'll make this short & sweet. My introduction to Gioconda was the Cerquetti/Del Monaco studio performance on Decca way back in 1960. I loved the opera. Then I heard the Callas/Barbieri/Poggi/Silveri/Neri recording a few months later which turned me into Maria's most devoted fan on my campus. The present Urmana/Domingo issue does not disappoint, but overall I would recommend the Cerquetti as the "best" all around performance ... although I would not be without both Callas performances, the Milanov and Tebaldi studio recordings, and the Caballe for sheer b eauty of the pianissimos. Also, if yu want a blood-and-thunder Gioconda, the Arangi-Lombardi vintage issue is quite thrilling. But, heck, the Urmana is worth a hearing. This is an opera which has not received a bad studio recording to date, so if your finances are limited, this new EMI release is not a poor choice ... it's just surpassed by earlier recordings.
A revelation!.......2003-07-05
I've only seen Gioconda in concert before, and that was some time ago, but I do remember being fairly taken with it then. This recording really brings it to life. To start with, the conducting is superb - Viotti really revels in the score. and it is a score that rewards the attention he lavishes upon it. It is well-paces, has some tender moments as well as the thrilling grand opera scenes, and some touching melodies. Granted, the plot is fairly cardboard, but it does provide rich opportunities for a decent cast. Oh - and the biggest tune of the show, the "Dance of the Hours" - is delightfully fleet of foot.
I suppose the main draw of the cast is Domingo, for who Enzo provides no great focal hurdles. Perhaps there are moments of strain at the top of the voice, but Domingo is seasoned enough a performer to smooth over such imperfections. All the bravura sheen as well as the dusky heft in the lower reaches is still there, much as it was thirty years ago. He is so experienced in this type of heroic role that almost without effort he colours the notes and text with great imagination. A performance to treasure. Inevitably, the other men are a bit pallid next to him. Lado Ataneli is right enough for Barnaba, though I can imagine plenty of other baritones who would have the edge over him in focus and colour. And what on earth has happened to the once glorious voice of Roberto Scandiuzzi? Here he sounds like a comprimario singer - and a provincial one at that. A let down.
No let downs from the ladies, though. At the centre of her own show is the Gioconda of Violeta Urmana, everyone's favourite Kundry. I'm not sure she will ever sound like a dramatic soprano, but she shows no apparent strain in the tricky tessitura. the voice sounds large yet the texture is focused and bright, and she is extremely musical - she never screams (when many Giocondas do!) and is scrupulous with the dynamics. Luciana D'Intino has a gorgeous, velvety sound, even from top to bottom and makes a very appealing Laura - Act Two, with Domingo and Urmana both going full throttle, is just sensational. Elisabetta Fiorillo, completing the cast, sounds perhaps a tad too much like her daughter to be a truly convincing old Cieca, but her use of the text more than compensates.
So - a highly satisfying Gioconda which whets the appetite for a staging - if anyone can get their act together! Great for getting to know the opera and a fascinating set for those who already have Callas, Milanov or Marton stashed away.

Customer Reviews:
A must have!!.......2001-06-01
Beniamino Gigli was one of the finest Tenors of all time. That being said, this set offers some of the best work the great Tenor ever recorded. Real standout renditions here are all of the duets recorded with Baritone and friend Giuseppe De Luca, the two lovely arias from Mignon, O Paradiso (rivaled only by Bjoerling and Lanza), Lucia selections (pretty much the entire final scene of the last act), and the Neapolitan selections (such as Toselli's hauntingly beautiful "Rimpianto"). The duets with Ruffo are interesting, but without the subtlety and finesse the same selections with De Luca possess. All three of the Romophon sets of Gigli's Victor recordings are prizes indeed (the third volume being only 1 CD), but this is, in this reviewer's humble opinion, the best of the three. Treat yourself to some truly fine singing and purchase this set now, before it goes out of print.

Customer Reviews:
The Italian tenor voice of rare beauty - Gigli in his prime........2001-03-27
There are at least three good reason for recommending this CD. Firstly, the years represented in this CD probably saw Gigli in his prime. Eager to communicate, and aware of the emotional content of each item, he has the Italian tenor voice of rare beauty. Unfortunately, these were also the Depression years, and even a best-selling artist like Gigli was invited into American recording studios on only three occasions in 1930 and never in 1931. Everything he recorded for Victor from 1929 to 1932 is here.
Secondly, the quality of the Mark Obert-Thorn restorations brings these items before us in best possible condition. To collect vintage Gigli recordings is to know that recent reissues have frequently been disappointing. The voice, in these recent reissues, is often both ill-focused and hard-edged. A comfortable listening experience is assured here.
Thirdly, this selection offers several previously unissued takes. Unpublished takes of the Bizet aria and the two Verdi trios are provided. In each case, a first take was unissued.
Combined with these recommendations is the fact that space has been found not only for 78 minutes of singing, and comprehensive notes, but also for a photo showing Gigli, Chaliapin and Tauber in close discussion, linking fingers and hands in front of a 78 metal master original.
Average customer rating:
- Ignore the primitive recording, listen to the performances.
- Nevermind the quality of sound, listen for the music

Customer Reviews:
Ignore the primitive recording, listen to the performances........2002-03-13
If you are interested in hearing the documents that launched the gramophone (or phonograph) as a serious recording medium, rather than a toy, then this is the disc to listen to. Of course, 100 years ago, the recording and reproducing process was very primitive, and current digital processing capabilities cannot really compensate for that. But, except for one very poor edit, the transfers from the original 78rpm discs are excellent.
Ignoring the recording deficiencies, what you can hear are marvelously enthusiastic performances by the greatest tenor ever to make records.
Simple as that.
Nevermind the quality of sound, listen for the music.......2000-10-16
This is a sturdy collection of songs, with the most famous pieces of the period (1902-1903, but the sound quality is lacking. The songs are recorded before the age of digital everything, the popping and cracking of the tracks could add charm or ruin the cd-depending on taste. Yet, the songs are incredibly beautiful and are worth a listen.

Few singers have done so much with so little. Tito Schipa's voice was notoriously short; he routinely transposed pieces with high tessitura and bottom notes were a stretch. But what a middle! The sheer sound of his lyric tenor can send shivers down your spine. This collection, comprising his complete recordings for the Gramophone and Pathe companies made between 1913 and 1921, demonstrates the vocal freedom and melting lyricism of the young Schipa. The selections are infused with charming elegance of timbre and phrasing. The songs are icing on a cake topped with such cherries as a ravishing "Cielo e mar," honeyed Tosca arias, and much else. Marston's superb transfers make these acoustic recordings sound like much later electricals. --Dan Davis
