Zoltán Kodály: Háry János Suite / Dances of Galánta & Marosszék / Children's Choruses - Iván Fischer / Budapest Festival Orchestra
Editorial Reviews

Kodály's music can be a lot of fun, and this disc is programmed for maximum entertainment value. The two sets of dances, which should be 20th-century Top 100 classical favorites, are about as entertaining as music is permitted to be, are the excerpts from the singspiel H&@225;ry János (which is Top 100, deservedly), the better- with the lesser-known music interspersed to excellent effect. Fischer adds to the mix three brief choral arrangements of Hungarian folk songs. The two children's choruses sing like angels, and the orchestra plays throughout with a tasty idiomatic quality, snapping the rhythms and emphasizing the imaginative color of the orchestration. If your collection isn't already overloaded with Kodály, this disc will be an excellent addition. --Leslie Gerber

This sunny and brilliantly played disc gives you Kodaly's three most popular orchestral works, all in supercharged performances overflowing with color and excitement. Given the fact that Georg Solti, a real Hungarian, spent the better part of his life at the helm of this very orchestra, it's curious that it took Neeme Järvi (an Estonian) to make an all-Kodaly record with them. In any event, circumstances could hardly have turned out better. Järvi pushes the orchestra hard--the Galanta Dances really fly--but Chicago is one of those super-virtuoso orchestras that loves a challenge, and you can practically hear them taking Järvi's dare and running with it. A disc that's pure fun. -- David Hurwitz

A waste of Kodaly........2000-06-12
I regret not to share the review of my former companions about this CD. Three major facts was put together to make this CD a smashing success :A well known conductor as Neeme Jarvi ,who have already proved his abilty and crafmanship on several CD's like Dvorak Poems where he was outstanding... A first class Symphonic Orchestra as The Chicago Symphonic which had been groomed by Solti and was Wonderful playing Brahms Symphonies under his button and Chandos Records with its slogan "Worlds ahead for clarity " and a well-estalblished reputation for professional CD's. Allas ,In this CD All the three failed desperately.. Kodaly is everything but alienate and foggy music which is played as behind a curtain in this CD. On who shall I cast the blame ? A tired and perhaps misinterpreting conductor or An awfull sound which clarity is away ahead and you may experience ups and downs while trying ro listen to Hary Janos or Peacock Variations. The peacock colours have faded with such a performance . Just not to suspect me being biased try to listen to Galanta Dances with the legendary performance of Ferenc Friscay in the late 50th and Mono and you will see the light and colours immediately. Last but not least are the curious remarks and analogies done by Plummer in his so called enclosed review about the connection between Ravel and Mahler to this peace. I'm not in the habit of disqualifying but unfortunately this is the case not to buy a CD.
Kodaly Is The Funky Drummer.......2000-02-19
Replay value is high--I've spent hours with just the first track and it never gets old. This is one of the most exhilirating orchestral performances I have in my collection, and I highly recommend it.

One of Fischer's most delightful CDs.......2007-04-21
The classical music world has come to rely upon Ivan Fischer as a one-amn spokesman for Hungarian music as performed by the best of Hungarian musicians. His approach to the whole canon from Liszt to Bartok has brought a native flavor that international conductors can't match. That's certainly ture in this exceptional Kodaly disc, where even the two familiar works, an extended Hary Janos Suite and the Galanta Dances, sound brighter, wittier, and more vivacious than eer before.
Like Copland in this country, whose idiom was sophisticated and yet folk-based, Kodaly's music speaks directly to several flavors of Hungarian culture, and Fischer is able to capture them all. The unfamiliar works here make the program even more savory, with a smattering of folk songs for children's chorus and a longish (11 min.) transcirption of Marossxek Dances written for piano. Yet in was in the impish Hary Janos excerpts that I felt I understood the raucous, piquant hero for the first time, even beyond what Istvan Kertesz gave us thirty years ago in his acclaimed Decca recording of the complete work. It's all quite brilliant.
A Magical Recording.......2006-10-02
Zoltán Kodály's music is far too seldom played. With recordings such as this one with Ivan Fischer conducting the Budapest Festival Orchestra in some of Kodály most accessible works perhaps that will change. If ever there were a combination of components to offer definitive performances of the works of Zoltán Kodály, they are certainly here. Fischer knows his way around this repertoire and draws some brilliant playing from the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
'Háry János' is a terrific opera, filled with wit and wisdom and overflowing with fine music. The Suite derived from the opera is here presented with six excerpts and the sound is pungent and obeys the exacting rhythms and melodies perfectly. The 'Dances of Galánta' are more frequently included in orchestral programs than the equally fascinating and beautiful 'Dances of Marosszék', and Fischer makes such a fine impression with this latter work that hopefully it will be available in more orchestras' repertoire. Also included are some works for chorus and orchestra, works not familiar to this listener before this recording. There is a joy in Kodály's music that is magnified by the voices of children and these works are irresistible.
This is not only a worthy performance of terrific music, but also the production values are first rate. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 06
Kodaly Dances of Golanta, Hartry Janos.......2006-02-25
Excellent recording. I am a professional trombone player and purchased this to review the Harry Janos Suite prior to performing it. I will also be performing the Dances of Golanta next year. Excellent recording with very fine performances. Any one who enjoyes music with an eastern European flavor will enjoy this CD.
Most Exciting Recording Of Kodaly's Music I've Heard.......2001-12-07
Ivan Fischer certainly enhances his reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Eastern European 19th and 20th Century Classical Music with this exciting set of Kodaly performances, most notably the Hary Janos suite. The Budapest Festival Orchestra gives lively performances replete with Western perfection and Eastern European charm. The children's choruses are equally delightful. The warm, atmospheric sound quality reminds me a lot of classical Philips recordings made in Amsterdam's Concertgebouw concert hall back in the 1970's.
A Kodaly disc of exceptional quality.......2001-02-03
This is a very enticing Kodaly program which includes most of the popular orchestral works. Only the Peacock Variations is missing from the usual canon and instead we are treated to songs that Kodaly wrote for the benefit of children's chorus. However, they are as enjoyable to hear as they must have been stimulating to perform. The singing of this children's choir is a joy, making this inclusion especially welcome. Also included are brief excerpts from the singspiel Hary Janos, some of which will be familiar to those who have heard the Hary Janos Suite. The more familiar orchestral works are given exceptionally vivid, colorful readings. There is scarcely a phrase upon which Fischer and his splendid players fail to shed new light. Fischer gets the best of both worlds from his players: Eastern flair and western-calibre polish. Not to single out any section at the expense of the others but the sound of the wind solos stand out in my mind as being excitingly gypsy-like and full of fantasy. The recorded sound is stereoscopically vivid and atmospheric.

Kodaly Compilation.......2005-10-10
Here on one CD are three of Zoltan Kodaly's most famous works. Along with Bela Bartok, Kodaly implements modes and rhythms from his homeland and incorporates them into his concert music in an interesting and unique manner.
The Hary Janos Suite comes off especially well on this CD. Here is a tale of a war hero who boasts his deeds in life and his many adventures. Of particular note is the famous Viennese Musical Clock, the defeat of Napoleon, and the Entrance of the Emporer. The folk instrument cimbalon is the star in this work and it is equally balanced with the orchestra, along with the inclusion of the saxophone give this work a "folksy" feel.
Dances of Galanta has a great drammatic breadth as well as quirky dance sections alternating between the two fast/slow styles. The dances erupt into an apotheosis of sound taken at whirlwind speeds, and abruptly link into the quiet sections.
The Peacock Variations takes a melody (not a very good one I must admit) and puts it through various orchestral treatments. Variations I-X are rather more upbeat, while a great melancholy falls over Variations XI-XVI. The finale brings back the upbeat tempos for a rousing conclusion.
The performances by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra are lush and romantic, just what this music calls for. Yoel Levi did his homework on these pieces and give each as "authentic" a performance as the Atlantian's possibly could. He perhaps langors too long on the slow parts of the Peacock, but that can be taken with a grain of salt since Levi is trying to evoke a more song-like feeling. In any case, having these great works on one CD is an offer I couldn't refuse. 1st rate recording and performance. For a cheaper option, check out the Dances and Variations on Naxos, and compare this CD to a rousing interpretation of the Hary Janos Suite on Philips with Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
A Very Fine Kodaly Program.......2005-08-16
I find these to be very sensibly paced and articulated interpretations of three of Kodaly's most popular works. The most important work, "The Peacock Variations," is sometimes dismissed as indicative that Kodaly's growing conservatism had turned largely academic, that the composer was more interested in an exploration of musical form than of the Hungarian folk music that inspired the piece. I don't see it that way. Certainly, the Variations aren't breathtakingly innovative in the manner of the Unaccompanied Cello Sonata. On the strength of this latter composition and others of the teens, one might have supposed Kodaly would have developed into another Bartok, an uncompromising modernist who so internalized the Hungarian folk musical idioms as to create a whole new musical language, a language with few imitators. Instead, Kodaly did become much more conservative than Bartok--or rather Bartok's conservative, more listener-friendly phase came later than Kodaly's. (It should be remembered that music critics at first didn't forgive Bartok either for his growing conservatism.)
But conservative in idiom or not, the Variations are emotionally very satisfying, progressing from the early variations in which Kodaly seems content to pit different rhythms against one another, to the humorous faux orientalism of Variation X, to the increasingly somber and even tragic Variations XI and XII, musical high point of the work. These variations are followed, logically, by the funeral march of Variation XIII and the mysterious and emotionally equivocal Variation XIV. Short, swift Variation XV is little more than a bridge to the grand maestoso of Variation XV. This variation seems to me a musical picture of resolution and an obvious prelude to the life-affirming finale. While there is no obvious program here, written as they were at the beginning of World War II, the Variations are a message of obvious hope for Kodaly's own oppressed nation.
As I say, Levi takes an entirely sensible approach to the music, scrupulously following Kodaly's tempo markings. So Levi's Variation XV is maybe a little broader than I've heard it done by some conductors, but it is a true maestoso, and this has its obvious benefits, especially as contrast to the vivace of the finale. The Atlanta Symphony responds well to his lead, the brass emphasizing the dissonances in Variation XII to give it an even more unsettling quality.
Much the same can be said for the other pieces on this disc. In the Galanta Dances, Levi builds very convincingly to the Gypsy whirlwind that is the final dance in the series. And while I've never heard a bad performance of the crowd-pleasing Suite from Hary Janos, Levi's is suitably colorful and dynamic. Again, the Atlanta Symphony does an admirable job, catching well the note of gentle sarcasm in this music, especially in the Battle and Defeat of Napoleon. Fine, clear sound with plenty of oomph in the best Telarc manner.
Catchy Cover. Average performance........2002-04-25
Unfortunately, although it has a great deal of potential, Levi gives Kodaly's signature pieces rather a stiff reading. Kodaly's music has unbridled energy, agitation and passion (one imagines that the conductor's hair should resemble Einstein's after a performance). Levi's approach is much more carefully controlled and the result is ho-hum. The Hary Janos Suite is the best thing on the disc - almost, but not quite, delightful. The highlights of the suite are the sweeping Prelude/Fairy Tale, the catchy Viennese Musical Clock and the bombastic Entrance of the Emperor. The Dances of Galanta are romantic, but not quite romantic enough. The Peacock Variations teeter on the edge of being slightly boring. Sadly for the listener, Levi decides not to mix business with pleasure and the result is a recording that represents Kodaly's music only in the academic sense.

Some people are frightened by the (mostly) 20th century Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. His colorful orchestration and by turns folksy and angular rhythms and melodies seem to be cut from very exotic cloth. But there's nothing to fear--this six-CD set presents his most popular orchestral music played with authentic flair by the Hungarian State Orchestra: the two violin concerti with the excellent soloist Gerhart Hetzel, the suite from his ballet The Wooden Prince, the Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, the Concerto for Orchestra, and several other flavorful works. As a bonus, three pieces by his compatriot, Zoltán Kodály are included. A fine introduction to a master composer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
a very welcome anthology for modest price.......2001-01-06
For many classical music lovers who are not specialists in Hungarian music - and I would count myself among them - this collection of Bartok's orchestral works along with a supplemental Kodaly disc at budget price cannot be too strongly welcomed. The Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra plays with rhythmic finesse and considerable virtuoso skill, and the direction of Adam Fischer is very fine. I will not attempt a comparison between his performances and those of Janos Ferencsik and Arpad Joo among others. The documentation is brief but well written. CD 1 has a playing time of only 39:25, but that should not seriously deter anybody. The tracking and cueing is excellent, as is the digital stereo sound. The reproduction of the painting "Preparing the meal in the wood" by A. Fenyes on the cover is very tasteful. Overall, this is a very satisfying issue.
Bartok and Kodaly in hungarian style.......2000-06-15
This 6 cd box is a very good one if you are looking for a essential Bartok, as a gift you get Kodaly too. Bartok is a master of taking folk songs and translated them to the finest classical music. The quality of recording is very good and we can imagine that the interpretation is accurate since the players are hungarians. There is a tenderness in the orchestra under Mr. Fischer that bring us a light and elegant Bartok instead of a rough one, as we can expect from folkloric music. The Romanian Folk Dances are amazing and you can imagine people dancing in the country. But the best in this collection are the violin concertos. Since I bought this box I listen the concertos many times and it is always a pleasure for soul.

Customer Reviews:
Fricsay's Psalmus Hungaricus is a must........1999-09-24
Fricsay was one of the champions of Kodaly's music in the 1950s - a man with a mission - introducing us to this wonderful music. This Psalmus Hungaricus, a 1955 recording, is electrifying and you quickly forget any limitations of the mono sound. It is a must. Equally good are the later Kodaly recordings of the dances and, especially, the Hary Janos (stereo). I would thoroughly recommend this to any Kodaly fans and if you've never heard Psalmus Hungaricus - check this one out.
