Many people will be interested in this title just for Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, cantata No. 147, the source of the much-loved chorale arrangement "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." The Bach Collegium Japan performs the chorale very nicely indeed, as well as the cantata's four arias and jubilant opening chorus. The other work on this disc is the great cantata No. 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis, which progresses from anguished repentance to serene happiness and triumphant joy. The BCJ recorded Bach's first version of this cantata (from 1714) on volume 6 of this series; volume 12 presents the revision Bach made in 1723. Some differences aren't great (reassignment of a couple of arias and a lower pitch), while others are striking, such as the explicit division of portions of some choruses between soloists and choir, and the addition of trombones (considered quite old-fashioned by 1723) to one chorus. Was it worth recording the work a second time? With Masaaki Suzuki's superb chorus, orchestra, and four soloists in top form--absolutely. --Matthew Westphal

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, but..........2007-03-18

Twenty years ago, Joshua Rifkin published the then controversial theory that Bach's cantatas were written with "one voice per part" (OVPP), i.e., the soloists also sang the choral parts. Evidently, this is no longer as controversial as it was in 1986 when these recordings were made. I don't know whether Rifkin is right, but his notes to the recording are persuasive, and I have since read much of Albert Durr's gigantic commentary on the cantatas, and Durr sees persuaded as well.

Good news: The music is translucent, the singing, for the most part, is excellent - especially soprano Julianne Baird on 4 of the six cantatas, and the great American bass, Jan Opalach on all except the solo soprano cantata, "Jauchzet Gott". The countertenor Allan Fast is excellent as well. The non-singing musicians play beautifully and Rifkin's direction makes the OVPP sound organic. Also, on two of the cantatas, tenor Frank Kelley deserves special mention for his heartbreaking rendition of his two major arias in those works. Jeffrey Thomas is excellent as well, although there's a brief moment of vocal failure in "Herz und Mund".

Bad news: As reviewers have noted, the sound engineering, in too many places, is extremely distracting. "Liebster Gott" is one of my favorite of Bach's church cantatas, and the recording of it here reflects an unparalled musical sophistication and just plain beautiful singing. But there's a moment in the first bars of the 2d movement also recitative that I must literally turn down the volume so it won't hurt my ears. Additionally, soprano Jane Bryden and countertenor Drew Minter are decisively inferior to Julianne Baird and Allan Fast. The tenors each sing admirably, but Frank Kelley sings so poignantly, one wishes he was the only tenor here. However, Jeffrey Thomas acquits himself admirably throughout, and deserves special mention for his work on "Wachet Auf." These problems are disappointing and more frustrating because of the general excellence of the performances.

Still, I can't stop listening. In retrospect, I don't know how I managed to miss this for so long. With small qualifications, I highly recommend this wonderful set.

I just loved this recording. The opening of the first cantata, BWV 147 as Rifkin has it performed is one of the most sublime pieces of music I have heard. All of the cantatas are performed wonderfully. Just a power pack of Bach at his best.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent music, words and wonderful new idea by J Rifkin for Bach's Cantatas.......2006-03-17

Although I have liked Bach's music for a while, this Cd was the first version of these cantatas I heard - and it was marvelous to me! It is full of life and joy and expresses the lyrics in my opinion to the full: "Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life must give witness to Christ" (the translation of the opening chorus)
I was more familiar with "Jesus, Joy of man's desiring" of the same canatata and was surprised at the other beautiful pieces.

The translation of the words in the booklet realy brought the music to life, as you I could read what the composer was expressing through notes. His expression fit perfectly.

Although some debate the technical side of J Rifkin's idea of using only 1 tenor, bass, soprano and alt instead of the choir, I liked it very much. Some choirs battle to do some parts of 140 and 147 Cantatas so to me the crisp and clear words and sounds were enjoyable. Personally I would fully reccommend it but with a challenge: Don't just listen to the sound and tune - let the words sink in... That's what its all about.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible recording.......2005-06-21

This is an example of Historically Informed Performance gone wrong....Joshua Rifkin's research into Bach's one voice per part (OVPP) choir is to be commended, whether it's true or not. However, in terms of both interpretation and recording quality, one could not ask for a worse example of period instrument performance, or performance on ANY type of instrument for that matter. The cantatas are played quite listlessly, very clean, every note in place....an attempt at perfection while sacrificing musicality and emotion. The continuo is without imagination whatsoever, and the choral sound is consistently lacking warmth and presence. Whether this is a consequence of using OVVP or just ineptitude on the part of the sound engineers is debatable. Paul McCreesh uses OVVP to astounding effect, so perhaps it's the latter fault. In any case, this recording gets two thumbs down for boring, turgid, overly academic performances of otherwise beautiful music; poor sound quality, analagous to a photo that's just almost in focus but a little fuzzy around the edges; and a total absence of feeling and emotion on the part of the instrumentalists and singers, and ultimately the director, Joshua Rifkin.

4 out of 5 stars Rifkin going from strength to strenghth.......2005-02-24

i have to admit Rifkin's version of the B Minor Mass, although shocked me a bit at first, managed to convert me to the one-singer-per-part theory. the point is that in Bach's sacred music human voices are used as instruments & usually pit against the instruments. so the chorus includes both the vocalists and the instrumentalists. with this in mind, Rifkin's theory works out fantastically in his musical directorship. the sounds are crisp, the balance between the vocalists and the ensemble is perfect. I got this CD after being convinced by the Mass in B Minor. Highly recommended.

In two classic recordings from 1957 and 1967, conductors Geraint Jones and Wolfgang Gonnenwein, two first-rate choirs, and some of the century's top soloists combine to give performances that exemplify the ideal of modern, pre-period-revival Bach. But even period-performance enthusiasts will appreciate these full-blooded, passionate, yet well balanced, elegantly shaped interpretations, which simply remind us that Bach's music can brilliantly shine in different contexts. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Perfect recording of perfect music.......2006-07-07

Makes you wonder why Charles Murray in his book "Human Accomplishment" does not rate Bach higher. I would not recommend listening to anything that brings tears to your eyes while driving! It could cause an accident.

5 out of 5 stars I wept.......2006-01-11

Although I bought this CD for the Cantata 140, the entire CD has been a powerful source of pleasure and joy. The chorale prelude version of Cantata 140 was used as the bridesmaids' music at our wedding, and our best man sang the "Zion hoert" movement--so I already had a sentimental attachment to the music. But I'd heard it off and on for several decades before purchasing this CD. And my initial (as well as current) feeling was that 140 on these discs was almost obscenely too slow. And yet, on at least two occasions, I sat in traffic while tears filled my eyes as I listened to it. It's a magical performance, even if it is too slow.

And the other cantatas (there are two sets of performers on the discs) are nearly as inspired. I especially like the "Ein Feste Burg," one of whose sort of Vivaldi-esque movement is so thrilling that, in spite of my moral objections to such practices (if you've read C. S. Lewis's "Perelandra," you'll know what I'm referring to), I've been known to play over and over and over again.

I have bought this disc for several of my grown children. I recommend it without reserve.

4 out of 5 stars Paying Homage To Bach's Spirituality.......2005-09-27

Tempo is vital to excellent Bach Cantatas, and here Jones directs fine group of vocalists, choirs and orchestra in solid, stable yet passionate account of four cantatas as well as Jesu, Meine Freude.

This is excellent balanced two CD recording, which is sensitive, informed and lively as needed.

Especially attracted to dignififed offering of Cantata 80, with superb vocals by Emeling and Sotin.

Nice price, combination and performance at reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful Bach.......2005-08-18

These somewhat older recordings of three of Bach's greatest cantatas deliver superb music making! Cantata 147 features memorably articulate, vibrant and focused singing by a young Joan Sutherland; the performance of the famous chorale, though taken perhaps a tad slow, richly serves the incumbent spirituality of Bach's music. Better the understatement found here than the racing tempi that ruin at least four other major versions I have. Gardner's tempi are acceptable, but the playing is not as focused as it is under these conductors. The orchestras here are pliant and attentive, partnering splendid singing with a devoted sense of intimacy. Altmeyer, Baker & Ameling are especially fine soloists in the other two cantatas. I've heard many performances of Bach's cantatas and consider these among the very best recorded versions. With so many recordings of the cantatas available, one would think there should be many musically fine editions from which to choose and be content, but memorable performances are rare enough indeed. Music making of this kind quashes an already notoriously thin controversy with respect to period instruments and style. This is music verily from the inside out, nothing less. It's a delight to experience from beginning to end. A separate chorale version of 'Jesu, meine Freude' (with slightly altered melodic cadence) is an unexpected additional treat. Don't hesitate, for Bach's sake!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Stuff.......2005-02-06

I am a relative newcomer to Bach's cantatas, so this review might not carry much gravitas but anyone's free to contradict me. I thought this was an excellent recording of some of Bach's most loved and well known cantatas, and this double-disc offers excellent value for money. Cantata 147 was superb, and thankfully was not sung in English as I have heard before but in German obviously as it should be -I go crazy hearing "Jesu Joy of Man's Desire" in english the German sounds so much better and this version is a case in point, with a really vibrant orchestral accompaniment instead of a laboured organ which I have heard before. This chorus is so good, Bach included it twice in BWV 147 and it really is a joy.

The second cantata on the first disc is BWV 227, the motet "Jesu meine Freude". I knew nothing of this beforehand and was delighted to find out that it contains all choruses and corales with no recititatives which I find to be a bit boring (queue sound of purists turning in their graves). The choir here is uniformly excellent

The second disc begins with BWV 140 "Wachet Auf, ruft uns die Stimme". I have a particular love and interest for this cantata having sung it recently and this is how it's meant to be sung- the South German Madrigal Choir's execution is far better than our unbalanced amatuer one! The tricky "Wachet Auf" chorus is handled effortlessly and perfectly with the "alleluia" bit toward the end absolutley superb. The two soprano/bass duets are also brillaint but the undoubted highlight of this cantata comes with the final corale "Gloria sie dir gesungen". This contains such joy and sheer beauty it must be heard to be believed. Translated, one of the lines reads "With men's and angel's tongues" and this sounds like choirs of angels. The finale with the sopranos hitting strong soaring high notes is hairs on the back of the neck stuff.

I know nothing about BWV 80 but to this amatuer it sounded excellent with the opening chorus a joy, punctuated with triumphant french horn throughout. The cantata is routinely excellent throughout.

I would definitely reccomend this cd to classical lovers in general and to Bach lovers in particular

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-11-15

Without a doubt these are two of Bach's most attractive cantatas, and fortunately for us are performed by the very excellent Monteverdi Choir under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner, who is probably the leading authority on the music of Bach. The soloists are the best and sing with great skill and emotion. The first cantata 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme'opens up with a rousing chorale familiar to most of us. The tenor voice of Anthony Rolfe Johnson announces 'He comes, He comes, the Bridegroom comes!' A conversation takes place between the Soul (soprano-Ruth Holton) and Jesus (bass-Stephen Varcoe): "When comest Thou, my Saviour?".'I come now'. Holton sounds so much like a boy soprano that I had to keep checking the line-up; but this partially explains why the Monteverdi Choir does not need boy sopranos to get the correct baroque sound; their sopranos have light, breathy sounds that lend themselves to the kind of music they frequently sing. This cantata was written for the 27th Sunday after Trinity which took place on Nov. 25th,1731. The cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben" was written for the fourth Sunday in Advent, Dec. 20,1716, and is based on the Gospel reading: Luke 1:39-56. This text takes Mary's words (Magnificat) as the paradigm for personal Christian proclamation, thus encourging the congregation to bear witness to Christ freely. When I first listened to this disc, it seemed to be over before it started; I enjoyed it so much!!!.One of the high points for me personally was the exquisitely beautful "Schame dich, o Seele, nichtu" sung so emotionally by Michael Chance (countertenor), who, in my opinion sings Bach better than anyone else anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars One small correction.......2006-03-13

The Amazon listing for this disk shows a release date in 2000. Actually, this disk was originally released in 1992 and re-released in 2000. At least one of the guest reviewers also says it was recorded in 2000. I have the disk and consider it to be excellent, my only reservation being the recording itself which is not quite up to the technical quality of the Gardiner/Bach recordings actually made in 2000.

4 out of 5 stars Rolling Thunder Cantata Review..........2004-03-13

Imagine being clueless about the "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage" of 2000: John Eliot Gardiner, the English Baroque Soloists, and the Monteverdi choir toured various churches in europe while performing the extant Bach church cantatas on the days they were written for. Who could imagine a better gig? Definitely beats out all of the stinky and smoky bars I played in some years ago.

Bach's cantatas are a wellspring of music; some of his most famous melodies originated in a cantata. The obvious standout here is "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" from cantata BWV 147. This is usually heard in isolation on "Classical Greatest Hits" type CDs and typically without the vocal parts. I don't know if modern music listeners in general can't stomach classical style singing or what, but I find it hard to hear this piece without the vocals; they add another dimension that the melody played on a solo organ lacks.

As with everything, there are multifarious ways to interpret music. This particular interpretation may not be for everyone, but it has it's own energy and style. It does have an authentic sound to it, as if the music is being played in a church (which is what it is intended for, for what that's worth) in front of a penitent congregation. Still, it's enjoyable in its own right, and worth a listen.

The Cd booklet contains the text for all the vocal parts, a history of Bach related to the cantatas, and some words by Sir Gardiner himself. Nice package all in all.

2 out of 5 stars Great Music & Performances, Disappointing CD.......2003-03-08

I must agree with the previous reviewer, who found this CD 'lacking in grandeur'. The vocal performances and music are meticulously crafted and delivered, and may indeed be true to the spirit of the period in which they were written. But they are curiously lightweight, and I felt like I was listening to musical fluff. "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring"--in my opinion, the most moving of all the cantatas--was far too fast-paced: it sounded distressingly like the Minute Waltz. "Sleepers Awake" received similar treatment. Professionally, all of the performers on this CD undoubtedly delivered, but what they delivered was curiously lacking in the soul-stirring majesty that Bach's cantatas can evoke.

2 out of 5 stars Where is the grandeur?.......2002-11-01

One of the above reviewers mentions the "bouncy" and "jaunty" tone of Gardiner's rendition. This CD is so bouncy it sounds like a Baroque precursor of disco! "Wachet auf" lacks the grand march quality in its opening and closes with a thin chorale. No full bass harmonies in the chorales. No stirring the heart toward rapture here! "Jesu..." is similarly thin and too fast. I regret buying this disk and doubt I will every listen to it again. Bach chorales and cantatas should tingle the spine and shake the cathedral windows. Gardiner's "Bach light" doesn't fill my family room.

        Album Details

As One of the Most Legendary Champions of Bach Karl Richter's Many (And in Some Instances Multiple) Recordings of the Composers Cantata's Arguably is his Greatest Achievement. Richter Enlisted Many of the Finest Vocalists in their Prime During the 1950's Through the Early 70's for These Recordings Elevating the Neglected Form at the Time to the Level of Grand Opera. His Conducting, Especially for his Day as Well Remains Remarkably Animated and Fluent Yet Always Respectful of Bach's Underlying Powerful Architectural Components. These Recordings Set the Standard and for Many Today Remain the Benchmark Performances by which all New Ones Continue to Be Judged.

5 out of 5 stars Bach in the Bach Tradition.......2006-12-16

I believe I owe it to the period performance movement for making me feel like I am committing a sin when I don't listen to Gardiner's or Hogwood's Bach (or Handel, or any Baroque composer for that matter). If, say, I put in Shaw's recording of the B minor mass, or most certainly Klemperer's recording of the St. Mathew passion, I feel that I should somehow be ashamed for what I am doing. There may be some type of Freudian truth buried deep within my being ashamed; however, there has always been an exception to my modern instrument guilts. This is, of course, the Bach recordings of Karl Richter; and more specifically, Richter's immortal survey of the sacred cantatas (well, 75 of them anyway). I received this set as a gift when I graduated from college, and I have been constantly listening since. The music of Bach has meant more to me than any other composer, and the Richter recordings show Bach's true genius at full speed ahead.

Don't get me wrong, I love Gardiner's recordings of the B-minor mass and the St. Matthew Passion; and I do believe that period performance practice reveals a totally new dimension of Bach which can sometimes be overlooked (or, "glossed-over" as the case may be with Klepmerer and others of the like). However, any academic arguments favoring Gardiner over Richter are simply meaningless to me. As Glenn Gould said, its not the type of instruments used that count, but rather, a deep respect for the innate structures of the music; this is what's important, and to accomplish this he believed that we must get rid of the incorrect and outdated notion that by "glossing over" these structures, it somehow improves upon them. I think Gould is absolutely correct in saying its respect for the musical structures that counts most; this is the only duty incumbent upon interpreters of Baroque music (and especially Bach). With this in mind, how can Richter not be the supreme interpreter? Richter gives us Bach in the Bach tradition, and I believe that this is in no small part due to his deep understanding of the same Lutheranism which was in the mind of Bach when he wrote this glorious music. To quote yet another Bach authority, Albert Schweitzer once said "Only he who sinks himself into Bach's emotional world, who lives and thinks with him, [...] can rightly bring Bach's music to the listener". I can think of no one who fits the description quite like Karl Richter.

Well, all arguments aside, the music on these 26 [!] discs are absolutely unsurpassed. I was a bit worried before I received this set, as I knew that in Richter's latter years, he did seem to take various liberties with the scores (more specifically, a slowing of the tempi to the point that it takes us out of the Bach tradition). However, I can safely say that these rumored liberties are nowhere to be found in this set, just pure Bach. I wont dare try to single out notable performances of this massive set (I would be here all night, and I am sure you are becoming tired of reading this anyway). However, one cantata specifically stood out for me during my first few hours with the set (and has since stuck with me); this being BWV 132 (4th Sunday in Advent cantata). This specific cantata, can speak for the entire set in terms of the soloist supremacy above all other Bach cantata recordings (how can you go wrong with Edith Mathis, Anna Reynolds, Peter Schreier, and Theo Adam - with Ursula Buckel and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau elsewhere on the set).

So, finally, this set has exactly what I want in a survey of the cantatas - that is, the genius of J.S. Bach is in the driver's seat, not the conductors. While Gardiner has his moments (and when he does, they are fantastic), and Klemperer did at least get everyone talking about Bach again, I believe Richter's interpretations are the standard by which this music should be played and heard. This set is a landmark in the history of Bach recordings, and although quite expensive, it really should be in the collections of all lovers of music.

        - By the way, the set comes in a large slipcover (as shown above by Amazon), with the five original fold-open cases inside; each made of an extremely sturdy, glossy-coated cardboard (as shown above by me [hopefully]). Each disc is in a paper sleeve.

4 out of 5 stars A Time Capsule of Sheer Delight.......2006-12-15

I treasured these recordings as a music student in high school and college in the '70's. Although newer, 'historically correct' recordings were emerging, Richter's musicality, if one will, still attracted me to these Archive recordings. This set is a bargin considering all the music there is to digest. DG's remastering is excellent-the warm analog sound does not suffer what can sometimes be a strident digitized reincarnation. DG's engineers and hardware were always on the cutting edge and these recordings speak to that fact. Say what one will about the oddities of interpertation, there is music in evey bar. Before I began listening, I though that I should prepare myself to forgive Richer for his position in history and look the other way when so called historically inaccurate idioms presented themselves. Yes, they are there, but, the younger listener will be quite astonished to find amazing vitality and sweep of phrase and articulation. Richter's tempi are often suprisingly brisk. The roster of soloists speaks for itself. If you are a musician interested in the genesis of Bach interpertation, this set is a must-have. It is often said that many Bach conductors after Richter took up where he left off. This group of recordings is a testament to his influence. Bravo DG !

There are certain musical monuments to Western civilization that no music lover should be without, at least in part. These include Haydn's symphonies and string quartets, Mozart's piano concertos, Handel's oratorios, Beethoven's string quartets and piano sonatas, Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas, and this, perhaps the biggest monument of all, the Bach sacred cantatas. About 200 of them survive and at least 100 are lost. All of them consist of a series of arias, choruses, and hymns based on sacred texts. Bach had to compose a new one every week for several years, and what makes the music so amazing is not only its quantity, but its sheer quality. There is literally no such thing as "bad" Bach, and this series of performances not only stands as one of the great achievements in the history of recording, it introduced many listeners to the fascinating sound of "authentic instruments." Is this set too much of a good thing? Nah! --David Hurwitz

4 out of 5 stars As Close as I can Imagine for Authentic Bach.......2005-08-02

If you like your Bach with a heavy Bernstein beat, operatic sopranos, and a huge concert hall sound, or in contrast if you would like to hear Bach as his parishoners did, then these recordings are probably not for you. If you want excellent recordings of the Bach Cantatas using period instruments and boys' voices, to include the occasional flaw, then this discounted, but still pricy set is for you. Here, for the first time, anyone can explore and study the marvels of Bach's Jahrgaenge close to the way it was meant to be heard.

When one considers that Bach had to produce a new cantata each week, and that the performers were local musicians, then one should not expect a perfect performance. When one recalls that the Cantata merely served to reinforce the message of the week according to the church calendar, one should not expect consistently brilliant music. To this, add the fact that the parishioners would have much preferred someone not so old fashioned as Bach to produce their church music. Set up so perfectly for failure, Bach produced some of the most perfect music ever written. Here, bad Bach does not exist.

The use of boys' voices is brilliant. A boy soprano simply does not sound like a woman. A good boy soprano's voice is clear and pure, without the extreme tremolo found in "trained women sopranos." The result is Bach at its purest.

In the mid to late 1950's, preforming Bach on original instruments became an interesting experiment. One group attempting this was the Bach Aria Group, directed by Frank Brief, who performed at the Town Hall in New York City. Over a two year span, Mr. Brief decided that it might be interesting to use a boy's choir instead of a women's choir once each year. He chose the Columbus Boychoir (now called the American Boychoir) of which I was a member for those two occasions. From the critical reviews, the results were very well accepted. Mr. Brief, however, did not go the full way. Instead of using boy soprano soloists, he called on women sopranos such as Beverly Sills. While they gave outstanding performances, it was not "original Bach." But when we asked why didn't he use a boy soprano, Mr. Brief responded that boys' voices could not be sufficiently trained to do Bach justice.

These recordings belie this judgement. Bach did know what he was doing! Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Recording's Greatest Achievement.......2003-04-14

Had this set not been made, then the history of performance practice in the last quarter of the 20th century and beyond would have proceeded very differently. Had this set not been made we would not have many of the current leading figures in the field of early music performance, nearly all of whom were in some way connected with the performance revolution which found its most profound expression in these recordings. For it was during the 14 or so years of this recording project (between 1971 and 1985) that three of the greatest musicians of our time, Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Bruggen forever altered the public's perception of the surviving remnants of Bach's fabled, but rarely heard, "Jahrgaenge", or yearly cycles of church cantatas. For this reason alone, this recording is of profound importance.

Leonhardt, with his consort in Amsterdam, and Harnoncourt, with his Concentus Musicus of Vienna shared the task of recording, with an unmatched team of vocal and instrumental soloists, Bach's roughly 200 surviving "concerti sacri", perhaps a further hundred being lost to us. It was a repertoire more honoured in the history books than experienced in performance. This enterprise changed that state of affairs for ever.

The arguments which are now sometimes made (chiefly by those who are unaware of the extraordinary and revolutionary step which these performances represented), decrying the slightly "raw" (I prefer "vocal") sound of original instruments, or the occasional shakiness of a boy soprano soloist, miss the point of this enterprise, which was to present the music in a new way using Bach's own contemporary resources. Leonhardt and Harnoncourt are the first to insist that using "historical instruments" makes sense because those are simply the best tools for the job. Re-constituting something old has never been their aim. Rather, their idea was to break free of the mindless tradition of performance which took no account of the sounds that Bach actually had in his head when he created his "well-regulated" music for the churches of Saxony. And how does this work in practice? We are left to marvel at an extraordinary level of accomplishment on the part of nearly everyone associated with this project, vocally and instrumentally.

Gustav Leonhardt was well aware (and hopeful) that subsequent generations would likely improve upon aspects of performance which still remained to be sorted out. But, as he said, it was a start. Indeed, when he and Harnoncourt were jointly awarded the Erasmus prize in the Netherlands in 1980, he remarked, with singular modesty and self-awareness: "It was not done well, but it is remarkable that it was done at all". This tells us more about Leonhardt's famous humility, than it does about the standards of these performances, which are usually (with few exceptions) very high indeed. In many instances they will never be surpassed. What we have here is a glimpse of one of music's "golden" ages captured forever on disc. What the listener will marvel at is the extraordinary assuredness of technique and style which is evident in every one of these cantata performances.

The solo vocal contributions of Kurt Equiluz, Max van Egmond, Paul Esswood, Marjanne Kweksilber (BWV 51) are simply without equal, and the current generation of fine Bach singers would be the first to concede their enormous debt to the participants in this great enterprise (their teachers, in many cases). The choirs should also be singled out for attention: Wiener Sangerknaben, Tolzer Knabenchor, Hannover Knabenchor, Choir of Kings College, Cambridge as well as directors Heinz Hennig, Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, Philippe Herreweghe, David Willcocks and Hans Gillesberger. So Europe's finest were all involved in this.

The instrumental soloists: Frans Bruggen, Walter van Hauwe, Kees Boeke, Anner Bylsma, Jurg Schaftlein, Lucy van Dael, Sigiswald, Wieland and Bart Kuijken, Ton Koopman, Bob van Asperen, Lidewij Schiefes, Alice Harnoncourt, Herbert and Herwig Tachezi, Erich Hobarth, Friedemann Immer - to list only the more familiar names - have created a whole world of intelligent and vital performance which has transformed musical thought in our time. No-one in any area of musical performance has remained untouched by the ideas which are so forcefully presented here (even those who'd be the last to admit it). The fundamental idea of treating each period's music as a vital and representative product of its time is one which now extends to music of all periods, signaling the fulfilment of one of Leonhardt's and Harnoncourt's chief aims: to eliminate the artificial distinction between mainstream and "early" music, and, instead, to treat all music with proper respect for its origins and context.

What this recording continues to offer the listener is the experience of hearing the music for the first time, which the technical polish of subsequent surveys cannot quite match. For the young person wishing to learn about music, there is no better starting point than investing in this set, now available at a fraction of its original cost (unfortunately, minus the scores, which were one of the hallmarks of this series in its first incarnation on LP.

It seems pointless to list highlights, but one might start with the following: BWV 1, 6, 8, 11, 13, 19, 23, 29 and so on. The list is endless. Better still, buy the set and begin a life-time's voyage of discovery instead. Bach, Leonhardt and Harnoncourt: you can't do better than that. Oh, and we should also acknowledge the contribution of the founder recording producer for this project, Wolf Erichson (even though he didn't stay with Teldec to the end of it). Without him, the revolution in informed and intelligent music performance on recordings would never have happened.

        5 out of 5 stars recommended.......2002-12-07

This complete set of Bach sacred cantatas is not only a bargain price, but it contains some of the most profound interpretations these pieces ever had. Recorded during the 1970s on period instruments, with some of most prodiguous singers (Equiluz, Esswood) and an outstanding orchestral support, this is the best integral collection of cantatas there is. In order to restore the forgotten sence of baroque music, instrumentation is reduced to a minimum, the continuo is supported with antique instruments such as the basoon, tenors have been thoughtfully selected as NON-operatic. Another reconstructionist aspect was the use of boy choirs, which in later recordings Harnoncourt gave up. Boy choirs are not only authentical, but have the advantage of pitch purity. While in some arias (such as the extraordinary duet "lobe den herren" - BWV 137) this seems an excellent choice, in most it fails in more or less apparent manner.

While Herreweghe's or Gardiner's new interpretations are CERTAINLY better in both orchestral and vocal support, they all are greatly in debt of Harnoncourt/Leonhard, for it's always simple to improve something ALREADY existing instead of breaking new grounds (as this stellar 1970's recording did). Not to be forgotten is the fact newer version bring a sence of lightness which pleases anyone's ears, but it's manytimes inappropriate for the content of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Teldec Set Still Holds Up After 30 Years.......2001-04-11

This set of almost 200 cantatas is, without a doubt, a milestone in recording history, and that alone makes it valuable. There are now at least two other competing sets on the market (Helmuth Rilling's complete set--on modern instruments, alas!--and Ton Koopman's period performance set still in the works), but this one, warts and all, still captivates and draws the listener into the world of Bach's cantatas like no other.

I would argue that no one can really claim to know Bach without knowing both his organ works and his cantatas. After all, this is the music that occupied him for most of his professional life. Most of these cantatas were written as part of his duties at Leipzig, and while in the hands of any lesser composer that might have meant uninspired music cranked out week by week out of necessity, Bach rarely, if ever, had an off day. Each cantata is a little world unto itself, a place you can retreat to for 20 minutes and either reflect on their spiritual message (which, be warned, is sometimes grim indeed), or just lose yourself in the beauty and grace of the melodic lines.

Harnoncourt and Leonhardt choose to keep these performances intimate; this is not the Bach of the concert hall; these are direct, personal expressions that work well in the private space of one's living room. Some of the playing sounds a bit shaky by today's standards--apparently some of the soloists were still discovering how to play period instruments that had not been heard in centuries--and the boy soloists seem to strain at their parts sometimes, especially in the earlier recordings, but that only adds to the charm: I much prefer the uncertain readings to letter-perfect performances offered by others. The performances actually draw the listener's attention away from the playing itself, forcing attention on the music and the text, which is entirely consistent with the nature of these pieces.

For those who don't want to spend the 500+ dollars all at once, Teldec also offers these in six-CD sets at a great budget price. They're worth every penny. My only disappointment is that the CD package doesn't include the scores, as the old Telefunken vinyl sets did. But that's perfectly understandable. This set reminds us why Harnoncourt and Leonhardt were once at the forefront of the period-instrument movement. Let's hope that Teldec keeps these recordings in print for a long, long time.

        4 out of 5 stars Nice performances.......2005-03-16

Leonhardt/Harnoncourt do a good job of recording period-like performances of Bach's cantatas. The boys voices are unique and fun to listen to. Probably not for the Bach novice. The use of period instruments and boy's voices will sound foreign at first. However, the music is beautiful never the less. All us Bach fans owe Harnoncourt and Leonhardt a great deal for their collection of recordings of Bach's wonderful cantatas. Thanks guys.

        4 out of 5 stars Stunning voices...however.......2002-12-07

The singing on this CD is unsurpassed, for what it is. Keep in mind that if you are not partial to boys' voices then this disc will not be to your taste. It is not necessarily a matter of authenticity. Yes, all male castes is the way Bach would have had it, but the idea seems too foreign for modern tastes.
Personally, after the initial experience of hearing boys play the roles of soprano, it is hard to go back. Indeed, there is a purity to the singing of found here that I have yet to find elsewhere.
There is one great reservation, this rendition of cantata no.80 is far inferior to the conductors other interperations of the same piece. Had I not known the disparity of the two, I may had given it five stars.

        2 out of 5 stars Bad taste..........2000-09-22

These recordings don't bring out the potential in Bach's genius. In my humble opinion using boy sopranos, screeching trumpets, and conducting not for the music's sake but just to come close to sounding like the original performances are just bad taste. Other conductors have recorded much more moving and beautiful accounts of these works. The only good thing about this album is that there are not that many other concise Bach choruses collections out there. But even so, why did they leave out the most famous part of Wachet auf?
