Christmas Oratorio
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This recording, nominated for a 2001 Grammy, documents as fine a performance of J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio as can be found in the catalog. Led by Helmuth Rilling, it is a vibrant, stylistically informed modern-instrument account in the noble tradition of Karl Richter, featuring smashingly good orchestral playing and superb singing from both the chorus and a first-rate group of soloists. Recorded live in Stuttgart from Christmas Day 1999 to Epiphany (January 6) 2000--the precise period in the liturgical calendar for which Bach composed the six cantatas that make up this work--it was issued late in 2000 as Vol. 76 of Hänssler's Bachakademie Complete Bach Edition, one of the final installments in that monumental, and utterly complete, tribute to Bach's genius. James Taylor is a gentle and ingratiating Evangelist, as befits the story being told, and all four soloists--soprano Sibylla Rubens, mezzo Ingeborg Danz, tenor Marcus Ullmann, and bass Hanno Müller-Brachmann--do Distinguished work in the arias. The sound is excellent. The only real flaw here is the mislabeling of discs 2 and 3: CD 2 contains Parts 3 and 4 of the oratorio (not 5 and 6), and CD 3 contains Parts 5 and 6 (not 2 and 3). Listeners should simply ignore the labeling and play the music. In short, this is the new top choice among modern-instrument recordings of the Christmas Oratorio. Rilling and his forces could scarcely have brought the Edition Bachakademie to a better conclusion. --Ted Libbey

It is not possible to fit 36 Bach masterpieces on two CDs, so what Essential Bach does is present individual movements from across a range of the composer's work. The anthology is clearly aimed at the newcomer, and the absence of booklet notes to put the music in context is disappointing. We are only given titles, performers, and what films the extracts have been featured in, from Rollerball to The English Patient.
On the plus side, most if not all of the music is instantly recognizable, by melody if not by name. Everything from the Brandenburg Concertos to "Air on a G String" to the B Minor Mass and St. Matthew Passion is represented. Performances range from 1960 to 1993, encompassing both early instrument and modern orchestra interpretations by a wide variety of forces, including Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and Raymond Leppard leading the English Chamber Orchestra. Given such diversity the result is unavoidably a patchwork, albeit one made from the finest materials, and as such is perhaps best treated as a sampler to aid exploration of the vast legacy of one of the very greatest composers who ever lived. --Gary S. Dalkin, Amazon.co.uk

so amazing .......2006-06-14
I love this kind of playing. this is my favorite classical cd.
Essential Bach is OK.......2005-09-29
This is a good basic primer. A true Bach lover might find a better selection/orchestra.
Excellent collection of mostly recognizeable music.......2005-03-18
LOVE LOVE LOVE this 2-CD set. I bought I a awhile back and have enjoyed it very much. My toddler likes it too. I think it's a great value for the money and may have to get another copy if this one wears out.
Exquisite Essential Bach.......2005-02-01
Value and exquisite sampler of Bach on two CD's at an affordable price. Recorded by the likes primarily of Academy of the St. Martin-in-the-fields, Chicago Sympony, Boston Symphony, English Chamber Orchestra and with virtuoso performers as William Bennett, Heinz Hollinger, Pepe Romero, and Wolfgang Rubsam, one gets treated to wonderful Bach exerpts of all his fantastic breath and depth of chamber, symphony and choral works.
One will have to go to other places to find background on these marvelous compositions as the liner notes only list perfomer and date recorded.
Good.......2004-07-13

Great CD.......2007-06-14
Great music, soothing, calming and perfect for bedtime quality time.
Mellow, Sleepy, Wonderful.......2005-10-27
I bought this CD for myself, a 60 year old. I have trouble sleeping and have been buying CDs by this company. They are all wonderful. I'm asleep in about 15 minutes!
Soothing Bach.......2005-04-29
It would probably help to first clear up a potential misconception in the unfortunate subtitle which refers to "lullabies" - a term that brings to mind for most people simplistic, sing-songy music hummed to babies in a crib. Lullabies are wonderful and have their place, but the music on the CD is not this (and Bach would probably have cringed a bit at the thought of his music here being called "lullabies.") What is here is a most wonderful, high-quality collection of Bach's Baroque music that is most condusive to creating a quiet, peaceful mood. The selections here include many famous pieces from Bach played by an impressive, all-star line up of notable musicians. Some listeners might take comfort in knowing that all selections have a similar, gentle tempo and mood without those unwanted changes in loudness from soft to LOUD that can startle one (the baby?) from sleep or quiet contemplation. The sound quality is good for the purpose of this collection - to provide relaxing background music or Rx for insomnia. I listen to this CD often if I wake up at night.
Johan Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a devout German Lutharan who devoted much of his life to composing music for various church functions and events in his position of 'head music master" in his different appointments. As such, we see often in Bach's music a "pastoral" quality - whose effect is to encourage, comfort and renew the spirit. No piece (and title) is more demonstrating of this quality then the opening "Sheep May Safely Graze" which is perhaps the finest recording of this magnificant and comforting piece by the Stuttgart Orchestra who brings a most expressive quality to the music. Its inter-weaving and delicate melodies give rise to serene visions of carefree green pastures and the sense that all is well. So, perhaps in that vein, this music has some commonality to traditional lullabies.
But, even though the music is serene, there is much musically to hear in these tunes - for those still awake. Bach's genius is seen here for setting a lyrical solo instrument (violin, oboe, cello) against a stable, comforting background orchestra pulsing away in Bach fashion. Many of these works are a typical style of Bach music known as "fugues" - which is a type of music where two-three instruments simultaneously play different melodies that all blend together in splendid harmony. This consistent, calming rhythm with gently soaring melodies are part of what makes such music suitable for bedtime. Finally, one who is just nodding off can appreciate that the last two selections are the most peaceful with the fewest notes coming from the solo guitar of Pepe Romero. They end in a whisper which should be right about the time you fall asleep and the CD player quietly clicks off. This is a really wonderful compilation of Bach's music that should be pleasing to both those just looking for some nice, relaxing music - or even to the long-term classical collector who already has 30 CD's of Bach's music but values the variety and soothing qualities of such 'even-temperament' collections.
Great for kids!.......2001-11-29
I bought this CD for my daughter when she turned six. It's been a year and she still listens to it a lot. Yes, she also listens to Britney and Christina, but on many nights she will request Bach (aka: that one with no words). It's great to know that they selected soothing, relaxing pieces. It's a wonderful way to broaden my daughter's horizons while also getting her to sleep.
My Kind of Bedtime.......2001-10-17
This CD is lovely and soothing, and I have to take exception to R. Loam's contention that the entire CD is in the minor key. I can determine from listening to the samples that certainly #1 and #5 are in the major key, and there are probably more. The minor key does not have to invoke meloncholia - it is many times in the eyes of the beholder.

This lovely CD features Renée Fleming singing religious music in an unaffected, lovely manner. Many favorites are here: both the Bach/Gounod and Schubert versions of "Ave Maria," each offered with long breaths and soft tone; "Rejoice Greatly" from Messiah, delivered with virtuosity and gleaming sound, and "He Shall Feed His Flock," also from Messiah, sung in a smooth, laid-back manner. Bits of the Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria are welcome, as is the gorgeous "L'Adieu des Bergers" from L'Enfance du Christ. In the prayer from Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel, Fleming is joined by the splendid Susan Graham, and a version of "Amazing Grace" features Mark O'Connor on violin. Two excerpts from Mozart's Mass in C Minor, pieces by Reger and Franck, and a few surprises round out this devotional CD. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
I hate to be rude, but . . ........2007-05-06
As stated earlier, I hate to be rude. However, Renee Fleming is not one of the greatest singers that I have heard. At many times, it sounds as if she is drunk, sliding into her notes at times. She also has a habit of hitting a note, and then quickly moving up or down for "dramatic effect". I'm sorry, but I just cannot listen to this. I know that everyone has their own opinions, and this is mine.
She is still a beautiful woman, and always will be. I have seen her concerts online, and she ISN'T bad, it's just that she doesn't have what I'm looking for in an opera singer!
Outstanding.......2007-03-07
I had seen this program on PBS and wanted the CD. Wonderful selection
of music and Renee Fleming's outstanding voice.
Sacred Songs.......2007-01-21
I always look for new presentations of Christmas songs. Rene Flemming did an excellent job in this recording. She has a super voice but sometimes the words of the song get lost in her singing style
My favorite of Fleming's CDs so far.......2006-12-07
There are only two cuts on this CD I tend to flip past (Amazing Grace and the Leonard Bernstein cut), but other than them, I totally love the rest! The cuts in German are divine! I could listen to this CD over and over again.
Inspiring and beautiful.......2006-07-20
I've always loved Renee Fleming's singing and this most recent album is just beautiful in every way. A rich voice, beautiful singing and a devout and magnificent artist. She makes even the most notorious evergreens come to life anew. I enjoyed it very much.

Still the One I Enjoy Most.......2007-03-30
I own the original CD release of this version conducted by Alldis;
I've been enjoying it ever since I got it.
I used to be disappointed that it was missing some of Handel's material; so I got the Sir Colin Davis version, which is exhaustive and supposed to be really good... It's pretty good, but this Alldis version is definitely more enjoyable. And now I think I can see why that other material gets left out; it looks like good libretto, but in general those parts are the least enjoyable musically and the most redundant for theme progression.
In the Alldis version, my favorite choruses like "And He Shall Purify" are clear and powerful. The solos are more approachable. All the singing is convincing, as though the singers are wholly embracing both their words and their musical approach. I sense them owning everything they are doing. And I love the use of organ as accents. I can imagine Handel conducting from a keyboard in heaven.
I admit I probably haven't listened to more than half a dozen versions, but until someone introduces me to a better one, this is by far the most enjoyable classical version to a contemporary listener, but I think even Handel would be appreciative. So buy it, listen to it, and enjoy it forever, forever and ever, forever and ever, forever and ever, forever and ever, forever, forever and ever, forever and ever. Amen, amen, amen...

Best full length version of Messiah.......2007-01-13
I bought this CD around the end of December and I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful recording. This is the best full length version of Handels Messiah. All of the vocalists, choir and orchestra were wonderful. This is truly a masterpiece and a great work of art. Listening to this version of Handels Messiah makes one feel closer to God.
Messiah.......2007-01-12
I purchased this CD to practice with before a concert in which I was playing my cello. I throughly enjoyed the recording and play it often even though the concert is long over.
Mammoth.......2007-01-11
The CD is better than "awesome" and the info. gives a heads up about the fact that it contains most of the material than previously recorded records. I have spent five years trying to get this CD and it was worth the wait!!! MP

Coffee ? Eggs ? Bacon ? Bach ?.......2005-10-04
This recording is a delightful morning brew of Bach's most beautiful and atmospheric instrumental music, even making use of an instrument that most music scholars forget he even wrote music for - the harp, as in the SLonatas for Flute, Harp and Cello, which on this recording, sound positively radiant coming from the likes of Sir Neville Marriner's Academy of St Martin In The Fields or the English Chamber Orchestra. The opening track is the ever popular Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, mostly a featured piece in Wedding Ceremonies. The Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D, which I believe is marked "Overture" is regal and elegant. The English Suite No. 3 in G Minor is a lovely piece, as is the intimately slow andane of the Brandenbur Concerto No. 2. The Concerto for Violin and Panpies in D is a fresh new rendition. All in all, this is a very intimate CD, full of Baroque charm and romance. It is a fine way to start your day.
Gentle background music with lots of harp.......2005-06-26
In general, the Philips series "Set Your Life to Music" is one of the better, high-quality compilation series of classical music. This CD is a collection of Bach's Baroque-era music that is ideal for those unfamiliar to the often-intimidating world of classical music who mainly are looking for some pleasant and inspiring background music while learning a little about classical music. This Bach collection contains music that is rich in the soothing sounds of flute, harp, guitar and oboe along with a sampling of Bach's mild-mannered, songful orchestral music. Overall, the selections are all gentle and lyrical with a good sound quality. The concerto, oboe and orchestral works are some of Bach's finest compositions of sheer beauty and elegance and are performed by some of classical music's finest musicians. Some selections most everyone who has been ever been to a few weddings will recognize (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire). And no piece is as haughtingly lovely as the flute sonata slow movement (Siciliano) on track 5 - a highlight of the disc.
While 'classical purists' may raise their brow because of the many flute/harp selections (citing that Bach never composed any music for the harp), the person buying this CD for inspiring and relaxing mood music should be be delighted just fine with these "transcriptions" from piano to harp. The harp has a special niche for creating the most serene of atmospheres which it does not fail to do here. The solo Suite in E-flat was originally composed for solo violin but sounds much more smooth and dreamy on the harp - a piece very well done. However, some pieces are so serene that you might fall asleep at the breakfast table - hence, the sub-title "A leisurely way to start your day." Actually, it could easily be titled, "Bach for Bedtime" as the selections are all pretty relaxed and on the quiet side. So, if the hyper-energy of Mozart symphonies is too much for your mornings or if the sharp surges of Beethoven's music unsettle you, then these calmer Bach selections should be a better way to ease into the day.
If you like the flavor of Baroque music, "Bach for Book Lovers" in the same series is a good choice and has more solo piano selections for the piano lover. "Bach for Bedtime" is also a wonderful (non-duplicating) collection of some of Bach's most serene music and is also recommended. Perhaps the most calming and sedating music in this Philip's series is "Baroque for Bathtime" which can easily put you to sleep - in a good way - with or without the bath. All are high quality with well-selected pieces from the treasures of classical music's most influential composer of the Baroque era - Johann Sebastian Bach.
Excellent Compilation of Brilliant Music for Home Listening.......2004-01-26
You will love this CD! Like many of the CD's from this series, the music was carefully chosen for home listening. I just love playing this CD at home.
The "songs" on this CD and from the series were chosen from the vast and excellent Phillips classical music catalog. The sound, performances, and song selections are world-class.
A lot of great classical music is great for an evening at the concert hall but not very good for listening at home. The crescendos can be loud and the themes too intense. I would rather listen to a breathtaking Mozart piano sonata (solo piano) at home than a grand Mozart symphony (large orchestra) at home. The music on this CD was chosen for home listening, such as when reading a book.
This music appeals to everyone. Classic musicians may snub this music because it's not grand like a full-blown opera. They ignore the fact that the great composers, like Bach recognized different musical genres such as chamber music for at home or the kings court, and grand symphonies for an evening at the concert hall.
The music on this CD is EXCELLENT for listening at home. It's both brilliant and mellow. When I listen to this music I marvel at the brilliance of Bach. I am very grateful for this music and other CD's in this series.
A fantastic CD!
Bach for any meal!.......2004-01-22
By far, one of the best "collection" CDs of Bach's music. On a couple of tracks, some liberties are taken, but overall, this is a must-have. It includes 6 tracks from the Flute Sonatas, and features a soloist with whom I was not familiar - Irena Grafenauer gives THE MOST EXQUISITE performances I have ever heard - Galway and Rampal, step aside!
Lovely!!!.......2002-04-06
Worth every penny! A must have in the car if you commute on busy highway daily to and from work -- help to ease road rage! It's great for relaxing after a long day of programming too!

Puccini Withour Words.......2007-07-11
This is one of my favorite CD's. Puccini wrote such beautiful music but it is often overshadowed by the diva or tenor who sing the aria. This is pure music and so enjoyable.
Wonderful! I don't care much for opera, but the music is great!.......2007-05-11
This is a fantastic album. I love classical music, but have never enjoyed opera. Some choir or chorus with classical is good, but the opera in general has never been entertaining for me. But the music is so good, so what to do?
Here you go. Get the music without the vocals.
Puccini's musical prowess was amazing. Madama Butterfuly is some of the most intricately composed classical I have ever heard. The vocals don't let you hear the true genius of the composition. La Boheme is equally enjoyable; delicately intertwined harmonies that relax and arrest you at the same time. Tosca is strong; again, truly enjoyable.
But, for me, the best piece on the album is the opener; "O Mio Babbino" from Gianni Schicchi. I must admit that I have never heard of this opera or this composition, but when I played this CD, this song came alive for me.
The entire album is mixed well, with very little background noise and very good sound editing. Considering the price, you really can't go wrong with this album.
A definite positive addition to my classical library.
Enchanted by Puccini Without Words .......2007-05-08
As a newcomer to opera, this disc of Puccini without words is an ideal introduction, to listen to as I paint. The music can go directly to my heart without worrying about words or voices to interrupt the creativity. Now I'm becoming interested in buying some Puccini with words and other operas as well. Now I'd like to hear an entire opera instead of exerpts.
Nice CD.......2007-01-08
Not what I expected but nice background music for a special occasion. If I had the choice again to buy it or now, I wouldn't have. Many other's out there with better selections.
Great arrangments and music!.......2006-12-23
It's a pleasure to listen to the music of the familiar arias. But what was shocking for me is to find out that "Bring Him Home" tune from Le Misserable is based on Madama Butterfly: Act II: Humming Chorus.
Wow, so it's not only A.L.Webber is using classical tunes for his musicals. Well, Puccini would be very proud to find out that these people made millions of $$$ with their help.

Neville Marriner's 1976 account of the Covent Garden version of the score (1743), with the Academy and Chorus of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and soloists Elly Ameling, Anna Reynolds, Philip Langridge, and Gwynne Howell, is positively plush-sounding but nicely animated. I'd love to have this kind of string tone for, say, the Dvorák Serenade, but for Handel it may be just a bit much. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
stellar performance - except for alto.......2007-04-06
Sir Marriner delivers once again in this authentic version of Messiah. Recording sounds great, except I find myself skipping to the next chapter whenever the alto is singing.. where did they find this tone-deaf alto? (Primary reason for 4 stars) Otherwise, no complaints.
Totally Inspired.......2007-01-10
Listening to this rendition of the Messiah will cause you to believe in God even if you didn't before -- what else but divine inspiration could create this sound?
A "New" Messiah.......2007-01-10
This is a great recording if you're looking for something different than the old standby version we all grew up with. Especially interesting are the solos, which are different versions Handel actually wrote. Great job by all the musicians.
The scholar's "Messiah".......2007-01-03
I am so pleased I purchased this recording. There is a plethora of choices when it comes to "Messiah" recordings, and this one is especially interesting to scholars of music history, professional or otherwise. Some of the arias are obviously not the ones you normally hear in concert today, and the liner notes offer a well-written explanation for the changes. The quality of the recording is excellent. The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields is always a spot-on ensemble and the singers are excellently trained. My only complaint (and it is particularly nit-picky at that) is the occasional intonation problem in the soprano section of the chorus. But really, it doesn't detract.
A good reading, but be prepared for its thick textures.......2006-12-17
by 1976 the period performance movement was just getting ready to pounce, but once it did (with Gogwood's 1980 Messiah) Marriern's style became outmoded. He employs lots of strings using lots of vibrato. His solists are in the plummy oratorio style familiar form countless English choral festivals. His tempos are staid--a comparative term, since by the standards of the Huddersfield Choral Society of yore, Marriner skips like a bunny rabbit.
In short, this is a mid-sized Messiah that's neitehr fish nor fowl, but if you prefer the traditiona, churchy way of doing this masterpiece, Marriner is lighter than, say, Boult, Sargent, or Beecham. Among the soloists, Ameling is sweet-sounding but has no sense of the words or mood of her arias. Anna Reynolds is quite fine, as is Langridge in a tepid, oratorio-on-a-Sunday way. I find Howells too operatic and hollow for the bass arias, however. My one real caveat, however, is the chorus, which sounds muffled and distant, and copared to more recent choruses, not as technically alert.

Perfect starter CD!.......2005-02-12
I'm surprised that no one has reviewed this CD yet. Released in conjuction with the Nationally-released PBS documentary "America's Choir" - this album is a perfect starting place for people who wish to have a sampler of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Serving as both a latter-day "greatest hits" and a stand alone album, this CD gathers six tracks from the Choir's recently released albums "Consider The Lilies," "Spirit Of America" and "Peace Like A River" and adds TEN brand new tracks recorded specially for this project, creating a perfect sampler of both the Choir's magnificent history and it's current sound. It highlights the strengths of the Choir's repetoire, from well-known hymns ("Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing") to patriotic standards ("Battle Hymn Of The Republic") to folk songs ("Shenandoah," "Bound For The Promised Land") and even some surprises, like the traditional Welsh anthem "O Home Beloved" and the "Fugue In C Major (Jig)" for organ and orchestra. A wonderful, wonderful CD, with startling changes in mood and tempo, but with the unifying artistry of the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Sqare.

An Emotional Favorite.......2006-12-06
My father, a tenor vocalist, performed as a soloist in the Messiah in Tucson, AZ in 1940. He chose this recording to introduced me to the Messiah in the early 1960s. Granted, some tempos are "different", and the 1950s recording technology does not fully recreate the capabilities of the chorus. But, having spent my life listening to and attending performances of the Messiah, this is by far my favorite. If you are looking for a full choir, full orchestra version, this is it. Enjoy it as I have for decades.
Short and sweet.......2006-11-27
Very simply: For close to 50 years my Christmas season doesn't begin until I hear this wonderful recording. Christmas isn't Christmas without it! Enjoy it with your heart.
My Favorite Recording of Handel's Messiah.......2006-01-23
I am no music expert. In fact, technically speaking, music is something I know nothing about. I have purchased seven different recordings of Handel's Messiah and this is my favorite one. It just pleases me more than any of the other recordings I have listened to so far.
Worth it for Warfield alone.......2006-01-17
While the tastes of the vast classical music CD-buying public --all 7 of them-- has moved on to more lean, agile performances with smaller choirs and authentic instruments, there are still reasons for buying this collection. One of them is William Warfield, arguably one of the most wonderful Bass voices ever produced in this country.
For me, Warfield's rendering of the bass arias and recitatives of this work are the definitive ones. Diction, intonation, voice quality, emotion, all are unsurpassed. There is utter conviction.
Warfield also sings in the Bernstein recording; I have not heard that, and cannot comment. There is a selection of most popular cuts from this album; it might be better value for most customers.
Eileen Farrell does a fair job with I know that my redeemer liveth. And the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has this going for it: they do sound like a good amateur choir, rather than a professional choir, which is (to me) a plus, since Messiah choruses have the feel of participation numbers rather than things you sit back and listen to.

Nostalgic, but that's about it.......2005-12-06
I've never cared much for this recording and repeated listening still doesn't give me a clue about all the enthusiasm for it. First, Ormandy's consensus tempos just lumber along, like in Beecham's humorous comment on Gotterdammerung, "like an old cart horse." If you equate ponderous to profound, you won't be disappointed. The cuts, typical of the era, give us a Reader's Digest condensed version of the story of the redemption of humankind. I always wondered why "Rejoice greatly" was missing until I read an interview with the late Eileen Farrell a few years back. For unexplained reasons, she simply didn't want to sing it. I've always wondered why Ormandy acquiesed. As a group, the soloists are OK, but surpassed numerous times in the almost half century since this was recorded. For whatever reason, the famed MTC doesn't (to me at least) live up to its sterling reputation or the missionary fervor of the LDS. I may be in the minority on this, but they sound much more alert and attuned to the nuances of the narrative in the later recording with Willcocks. The orchestrations are the Mozart/Hiller retouchings. Rigidly insisting on historical performance practice is not my thing. I find much to enjoy in this performance's comtemporaries by Sargent and the older Thompson Stone version with the Handel and Haydn society that has never found its way onto CD. For that matter, the older tradition is also well represented by Boult and Klemperer (even Susskind) with a simpler string/woodwind orchestra sonority without the retouchings. For that matter, Beecham's kaleidoscopic and controversial version gets more to the heart of the matter than this middle of the road coziness.

Chip Davis's Mannheim Steamroller hasn't lost any ground in the six years since their last Yuletide offering. Christmas Extraordinare is another innovative and heartfelt collection of seasonal treasures played on a combination of 18th-century instruments and modern-day synthesizers, drums, and electric guitars. While not the first to marry different ages of musical instruments, Davis and his cohorts use them with imagination and an intensity that gives new life and drama to this rather inert genre. For material, Mannheim Steamroller asked their fans to choose their favorite holiday selections and vote on their Web site. The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing "Fum, Fum, Fum," a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's "Faeries" from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" an edgy tension. "Winter Wonderland" is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok. While most of the Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas albums are largely instrumental, Davis has employed the considerable talents of University of Michigan's Glee Club to sing on "O Tannenbaum," respectfully fading their elegant, full vocals around the pristine voice of Johnny Mathis, elevating this German carol to a cinematic peak. Don't miss out on the clever liner notes, which give the reader a whimsical, anecdotal history of the 12 songs. --Jaan Uhelszki

Mannheim Steamroller.......2007-01-10
I own quite a few of Mannheim Steamroller cd's and love them all.
I like it.......2006-12-18
Although, anyone should definately buy their first two albums from the 80s first, this is much calmer and more sophisticated. The first two albums are much more upbeat and inticing. This is still some beautiful Christmas music though. It's relaxed and possibly more suitable for the parents (not that children wouldn't like it) and creates a really great chilled out loving mood.
Wonderful Christmas tunes from Mannheim Steamroller.......2006-12-06
This was a pleasure to listen to again! It makes nice background yule-tyde music for the winter solitice holiday celebration. The birth of Jesus also represents the growing length of sunlight and rebirth of life. Also smartly included are Johnny Mathis (O Tannenbaum),University of Michigan Men's Glee Club,Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum Women's Choir, Almeda Berkey directing. They should continue to stick with Christmas standard classics and stay away from the Halloween tunes. This wintertime CD from Mannheim Steamroller is extraordinaire indeed!
Christmas Extraordinaire.......2006-02-26
I am a fan of Mannheim Steamroller and had high expectations for this CD. This is not quite as good as their older Christmas Cd's. It is ok but far from what it could have been.
Doesn't Really meet the test of time.......2006-01-05
With no offense intended to Mannheim Steamroller, I just wasn't very excited about this CD. Probably the best thing on here is the Nutcracker selection, but nothing stands out as being original or a fresh look at music. The best thing I think that can be said about it came from my father, who heard it at Christmas, and said "At least it doesn't sound like all their other music." So, if you are tired of hearing the standard radio playlist of Chip Davis, this might be refreshing. On the other hand, if none of the selections from CHRISTMAS EXTRAORDINAIRE are being played, then probably none are very good (or popular).
In retrospect, I wish I had gotten FRESH AIRE, which I recognize as having some of my favorite Mannheim Steamroller songs. I'm not throwing this CD away, but it won't be on the top of my Christmas music pile either.
