This series of 11 church anthems is a sterling example of doing more with less. Though their format is multiple movements for soloists, chorus, and orchestra, inviting grand treatment, Handel had available only a couple of oboes and a small string band and choir (with no violas or altos for numbers 1 to 6). Yet each one of these anthems is a gem. Handel's music captures well the changing moods of the Psalm texts--from somber penitence to serene bliss to infectious joy to the raging of storms and seas. Though James Bowman's arias lie uncomfortably low for him, he and Michael George do fine work; Lynne Dawson, Patrizia Kwella, and Ian Partridge are delightful. Harry Christophers leads his choir and orchestra in subtly inflected and beautifully paced performances. --Matthew Westphal

These psalms set to music, for use in church services, are divine! Handel never fails to please and the recording is top notch.
Now that you've heard Handel's versions, be sure to check out what Henry Purcell did a generation earlier with the same material.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, I love Handel!!.......2007-04-18

Why haven't I heard of this music before? I have long loved the Messiah, in fact, I have about 15 different CD versions of it! Now I can listen to Handel all year long, and for me this is all new music! If you love Handel's Messiah, you will love this collection! I just started listening to it on my drive to and from work, and I was transported! I enjoy the solos, the duets, and then the whole ensemble singing gloriously together. I am very happy I purchased the entire set!

5 out of 5 stars Why aren't these better known?.......2006-04-14

It boggles my mind that this seems still to be the only complete set of the Anthems available on CD. The first of the discs came out in 1989 or so and volumes 1 and 2 were among the first CDs I ever bought (late adopter, I admit); I eagerly awaited and bought the others as they came out. Not that there's much to criticize about these performances. Oh, you may not like the tenor's very heavy dependence on mixed voice to hit high notes -- I don't mind it and for all I know it's faithful to the style of Handel's day -- or like the sound of the countertenor soloists or even the particular vocal qualities of one or the other of the sopranos (I find nothing wrong with any of them), but the chorus and instrumentalists sing and play crisply and very well. These Anthems were written to be lively and entertaining as well as full of honest devotion. Handel's grasp of English was still shaky at the time, and the choice of metrical versions of the Psalms for many of the texts is, well, questionable. More that one phrase will raise a smile: "That God is great we often have/ By glad experience found/ And seen how he with wond'rous pow'r/ Above all other gods is crown'd" is a prime example -- but listen to the bass (under-used by Handel in these Anthems, sadly: perhaps he lacked a reliable one at the time) sing Handel's setting, which reminds me of a beautiful, affectionate puppy of a large breed: slightly ridiculous, a bit bumbling, but attractive and strong and lovable. Or the chorus about "snares, fire, and brimstone" pouring in a "dreadful mixture" on the wicked: clearly the choristers are having great fun, just as I would, given the chance to sing this absurd version of the Psalmist's words. Buy this set, get your local choral society to sing one or more of these Anthems (I got to sing #11 once), spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - one of the best Handel CD's availible........2001-11-29

This baroque era "Praise Music" is light years beyond the vacuous pablum that passes for praise music in churches today. I have had these four CD's for almost a decade (previous release) and they are still among my favorites. Almost all the songs (all the spoken music that is - a few songs are instrumental preludes) are Bible scripture verses set to music - similar to what Handel did in the Messiah. The musical quality of the CD is excellent. You would never guess that only 16 people are doing the choral parts. If you only have 10 CD sets of traditional Christian music this CD set should be one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscovered, the Chandos anthems deserve your ears!.......1998-10-27

Handel's Chandos anthems are apparently being rediscovered, as the release of several new recordings bears witness. This set is surely the best available, and is certainly the only complete collection. Especially beautiful are the duets ("O Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness" and "Wash Me Th'roughly") and the tenor's recitatives. Performance is brisk and tight, though never rushed. Those who favor Simon Preston's even snappier style may prefer his rendition of Anthem 10 (now distributed with his very fine, and affordable, "Israel in Egypt"), but overall no one can be disappointed with this collection of too-rarely heard works.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choral tone with accurate historical information.......1999-10-16

The purchase of this CD was a pleasure due to my exhaustive search for Handel's Chandos Anthem No. 6. I searched exclusively for any recording of "With the Voice of Praise". My familiarity arose out of exposure to an SATB version of this anthem that the Asbury College Concert Choir sang when I was a music major.

After nearly four years of searching, I located this CD performed by "The Sixteen." Their rendition shocked me--in a good way. The historical notes indicated that Handel had to arrange many of these Chandos Anthems several times due to the constant change in personnel. Most of his singers were also servants and attendants, so he couldn't always count on his ensemble membership. Sound familiar to anyone?

This CD performs the anthem with a three-part choir: STB, no less! The preceding solo tune is completely different than the one used in the SATB version currently available through Carl Fischer, Inc. And, this exciting chorus contains approximately 6 additional measures in the 3-part arrangement. As well, the text is slightly different on the recording compared to the SATB version. "In the voice of praise and thanksgiving; among such as keep holy day" versus the SATB "With the voice of praise and thanksgiving; a festal throng keeping holy day."

Any way you slice it, this is a fun chorus that is teachable to beginning high school choirs and the average church choir--with lengthy prep time.

It's fantastic to have biblical text so full of energy--particularly Psalm 42:4. This is the same chapter where we get "As the Deer panteth for the water..."

Excellent instrumentalists and enjoyable English-styled singing, with very little vibrato in the choral parts.

The two arrangements, SATB and STB, are both printed in Handel's collected works. These are available for inspection in most university music libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Masterly, Choral Splendor.......2005-11-26

Harry Christophers and the Sixteen Choir and Orchestra seem to have been much more at home with Handel’s English Chandos Anthems than they were with Bach’s St. John Passion, which they also recorded in the spring of 1989. This fourth CD containing Anthems No. 10 and 11 is quite brilliantly done: Handel was at his greatest, using the slightly increased forces at the future Duke of Chandos’ chapel to the best of effects. Psalm texts such as: “The earth trembled and quak’d, the very foundation of the hills shook, and were removed […]. They are brought down and fall’n, but we are risen” brought out the maximum in imitative orchestral writing and choral splendour, and the closing fugue of “Let God Arise” could, despite the limited forces available, almost be mistaken for one of the “purple patches” from “Messiah”.
Anthem No. 10 (“The Lord is My Light and My Salvation”) is written for five part choir with three tenor solo airs and one short but very effective soprano air, masterfully performed by Lynne Dawson. Anthem No. 11 (“Let God Arise”) is mainly choral, with the two soloists having only one short air each. Ian Partridge is perhaps not quite as convincing as Lynne Dawson but does all that is required of him; the orchestra (this time with four each of first and second violins plus three cellos and a double bass in the strings, then two recorders, an oboe and a bassoon as woodwind and organ continuo) sounds decidedly mature in comparison with, say, the first volume and provides some highly entertaining moments.

The only slightly sour point about this particular CD is the playing time of merely 49 minutes, but if you are collecting Handel’s sacred works, that should in no wise deter you from buying and listening to this superb music.

This series of eleven church anthems is a sterling example of doing more with less. Though their format is multiple movements for soloists and chorus and inviting of grand treatment, Handel had available only a couple of oboes and a small string band and choir (with no violas or altos for nos. 1-6). Yet each one of these anthems is a gem. Handel's music captures well the changing moods of the Psalm texts--from somber penitence to serene bliss to infectious joy to the raging of storms and seas. Though Bowman's arias lie uncomfortably low for him, he and George do fine work; Lynne Dawson, Patrizia Kwella, and Ian Partridge are delightful. Harry Christophers leads his choir and orchestra in subtly inflected and beautifully paced performances. --Matthew Westphal

Harry Christophers continued his valuable series of recordings of Handel’s “Chandos Anthems” with this third volume containing Anthems Nos. 7, 8 and 9. The recording was made at St. Jude’s Church, London, in January and February 1989. These slightly later anthems require a four-part choir and include, for the first time in this series, male altos. There is also a male alto solo part, here sung by James Bowman with quite amazing delicacy, especially considering that the pitch is, for him, rather low. Soprano Lynne Dawson appears not to have been available and is here replaced by Patrizia Kwella, herself an accomplished Handelian. Her voice has a sweetness and simplicity that becomes these anthems very well. The other two soloists, Ian Partridge (tenor) and Michael George (bass), participated in the two previous CDs. Ian Partridge has a very English timbre, something that an American singer colleague of mine recently declared “did not convince” him – perhaps he detected a certain lack of religious fervour. But on the whole I felt that Ian Partridge’s style fits rather well with this decidedly “Augustean” music – but each listener must decide for himself or herself: Try track 4 (“God is very greatly to be feared in the counsel of the saints”), which is a tenor air and not, as the booklet would suggest, a trio for soprano, tenor and bass, or track 11 (“O come, let us worship and fall down”).

In the orchestra there were also some changes. David Woodcock took over as leader, and he and William Thorp produce some excellent solo violin playing, as also does Sophia McKenna on the oboe. The instrumental passages and accompaniment appear to have gained in stature since the first two CDs of the edition.

Handel’s music is, as always, superb, and he seems to have had no difficulties in drawing inspiration from English psalm texts (Anthem No. 9 is on a rhyming paraphrase by Tate and Brady). However, the famous trio “Thou rulest the raging of the sea” has been proved spurious and is not included on this CD. Anthem No. 9 (“Praise the Lord with one consent”) is beautifully crafted, the alternating passages for choir and soloists expressing a joy and confidence that, for sacred music, should be par for the course but are, in fact, quite rare.

All in all, this is a more than worthy successor to the previous two CDs of the series and a most welcome addition to the Sixteen’s grand discography.

The felicity with which George Frideric Handel was able to compose in practically every genre never ceases to amaze me. After only five years (or, in at least one case, considerably less) in England, he was able to write some of the most delicious Anglican anthems on English psalm texts, works which can be considered as precursors of his later English oratorios and which demonstrate with wonderful clarity how the opera-composer Handel turned his expressive skills to the words of Scripture with wonderful effect. Harry Christophers turned to the so-called Chandos Anthems in 1987 when he recorded the first three anthems for the Chandos label (nomen es omen) in a production which can be considered a milestone in the discovery of Handel’s English-language works and which, some 17 years later, still meets all the criteria of a successful CD: brilliant, gloriously-captured soloists (among whom Lynne Dawson is rapturously outstanding, although Ian Partridge is not far behind), a superb twelve-voice choir with mature adult voices (Handel’s patron, the Duke of Chandos, had no alto voices available to him at the time), an original-instrument orchestra that in view of its small size and lack of violas does, within these limits, a grand job – and, of course, Chandos’s superb recorded sound, which enables one to hear every detail while maintaining the acoustic of the original recording venue. I found that listening via headphones was eminently satisfying, while it was, in particular, the choir that came over brilliantly via loudspeakers.

This is not the place to describe the music in detail; let it be said that it would be a waste of good music not to follow the text closely while listening, because Handel had a tremendous gift of imitating both nature and emotion while also maintaining suspense. Harry Christophers appears to have mastered these anthems in such a way that one can never tire of hearing them. Personally, they made me long for modern church music that takes the Word of God equally seriously and at the same time is able to bring over the spirit of faith and enthusiasm that Handel’s style exudes.

This is one of the most beautiful recordings of Handel's vocal music ever issued--aesthetically superior, in my view, to the very good performance by The Sixteen. It is a tragedy that it is out of print and I encourage all lovers of Handel and baroque vocal music who would like to have it to contact Vanguard (or current copyright owner if Vanguard has been bought out by someone else)to demand its reissue.

This is the second CD of four that Harry Christophers and his team put together for the Chandos Chaconne label containing all eleven of Handel’s “Chandos Anthems”. This particular volume, recorded at St. Jude’s Church in London from the eleventh to the thirteenth of October 1988, contains Anthems 4 through 6: “O Sing Unto the Lord a New Song”, based on Psalms 93 and 96; “I Will Magnify Thee”, based on Psalms 144 and 145; and “As Pants the Hart for Cooling Streams” with a text taken from Psalm 42. The last of these was probably the first of the Chandos Anthems to be composed, having originally been conceived as an anthem for choir and organ for the Chapel Royal in 1712, not long after Handel arrived in England. It seems quite amazing that a composer from Lutheran North Germany who had recently been writing extravagant cantatas and operas in Catholic Italy should now come to England and write Anglican church music with such incredible facility! “As Pants the Hart for Cooling Streams” is one of my favorite pieces of Handel and is here warmly performed by Lynne Dawson, soprano, Ian Partridge, tenor, and the Sixteen Choir (5 sopranos, 4 tenors, 4 basses – James Brydges, the future Duke of Chandos, had at that time no altos in his chapel choir) together with the Sixteen Orchestra (eight violins in unison, two cellos and one each of double bass, oboe, bassoon and organ). My only criticism is levelled at the solo violin, here played by “Konzertmeisterin” Julie Miller – it seems to me that the solo passages could have been used to much greater effect.

The other two anthems are equally brilliant. Each opens with a “sonata” that Handel later used again when composing instrumental music. The anthems themselves consist of choral numbers interspersed with relatively short solo arias and the occasional duet, some of these numbers being absolute classics of their kind. In “O Sing Unto the Lord” there is the tenor aria, “The Waves of the Sea Rage Horribly” with its stormy realisation of the text, followed by the absolutely ravishing duet “O Worship the Lord in the Beauty of Holiness”, where Lynne Dawson’s voice achieves a devotion and purity that can scarcely be equalled. In “I Will Magnify Thee” it is tenor Ian Partridge who gets most of the well-deserved glory with three solo arias: Listen to “The Lord Preserveth All Them that Love Him” to see what he can do with Handel’s admittedly inspired music!

The quality of the engineering is excellent, slightly better than on Volume 1, with the soloists in particular very clearly captured.

If, like me, you are slowly collecting Handel’s vocal music, do not miss this CD. I should perhaps point out, however, that Chandos have re-issued the whole Chandos Anthems set in a 4-CD box with generous pricing, so if you don’t own any of the set, you would do better to buy all four CDs at once.
