Gyorgy Cziffra was one of the greatest virtuoso pianists of all time. The clarity of his playing even at extreme speeds lends a level of excitement to his sound that surpasses nearly every other pianist. This valuable collection, which does not overlap a similar set on the Appian label, includes Liszt, which demonstrates Cziffra's extreme dexterity and volatile temperament. Four Strauss arrangements and paraphrases are dizzying in the great virtuoso tradition. Even Cziffra's version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is idiomatic; for a time he had to play jazz in postwar Budapest nightclubs. Decent mid-'50s mono sound. --Leslie Gerber
