At first reluctant to make recordings, by the 1930s the great pianist Artur Schnabel had fully accepted the new technology. His recordings of Beethoven’s piano music include all the numbered sonatas, originally issued on subscription by the Beethoven Sonata Society. This, the fifth volume of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas series, presents the famous Moonlight Sonata, which was no less a recital favourite in the 1930s than it is today. Writing in 1936, a critic of the New York Times noted that Schnabel’s interpretation was marked with a characteristic regard both for detail and the full sweep of the work, which "assumed a new vitality". In its August 1933 review of the recording of the Pastorale Sonata, Gramophone’s critic wrote of the transparency of Schnabel’s playing and of his unerring choice of tempi. In his insistence on recording all thirty-two Sonatas, Schnabel left a statement that influenced how we understand and appreciate many of Beethoven’s works.

I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper.

I love the sound of this most unusual instrument, the harpsichord. Especially the fast intricately melodic songs. Very enjoyable. This "Greatest Hits" includes many compositions perfectly suited to this wonderful old predecessor to the piano. There's even a little funny trivia thrown in: on the song sheet is written: Q:"what did the famous conductor Sir Thomas say that the harpsichord sounds like? A: "Like two skeletons screwing on a hot tin roof" :)

This is a fun cd. BYRD, BULL, BACH ETC come through great Scarlatti bits sound like a flock of unhappy cows running of a field of burnt popcorn but those bits generally do unless played on the African Kalimba [or thumb piano] in Africa where I need not hear them.

This is a well engineered CD. Many featuring the harpsichord demand a level of equipment beyond that of any regular person with bills, which means this disk sounds just fine on a boom box. Everybody in the family will like some part of this disk `cept for the 13 year old whose lost to punk rock or hip hop.

The Most Superb Harpsichord Sampler.......2000-07-27

I can't imagine a better sampler of harpsichord 'hits' played by one of the great stereo-era masters. A full complement of emotions is displayed here, from the most delicate and sparing texture to the most rip-roaring martial roar. If you're wondering what the harpsichord is about, or if you're already a fan and want a great sampler to play for your own delight and amusement, you cannot go wrong with this recording.

Though Beethoven could play the violin he was not a virtuoso on the instrument. The piano, on the other hand, was changed as an instrument by him. He was always on a quest for more sonorous and richer sounds and piano makers did their best to oblige. Many of Beethoven's avant guarde ideas about composition and the role of music in self expression started as piano sonatas and piano works. With this in mind, Beethovens compositions for the piano are some of the most outstanding, brilliant, and technically pure works to emerge from any composer. It is impossible not to feel the emotions Beethoven wishes to convey from piece to piece.

The piano sonatas are really self contained dramas. In them, you will hear the expressions of sadness, beauty, rage, and unbounded joy. It is impossible to listen to this collection and not find pleasure in it. The recordings as well as the performers are top-notch. Highly recommended.

An excellent set featuring Ludwig van's sets of variations wherein he gets jazzy and swings on catchy tunes! Highly recommended.

NOTE: For those of you who don't understand metaphor: what I'm saying here is that Beethoven used popular operatic hit-tunes of his day and improvised variations on those tunes--as is done in America's original art-form--Jazz. Get it?

Perfectly performed versions of classic piano pieces for the advanced beginner/early intermediate piano student. Very useful and enjoyable to listen to for such piano students and pleasant enough for others.

Great listening, any time.......2006-08-25

I purchased this cd after hearing one song from it on classical radio. Because it is a cd meant to show students how to play songs, the songs are played simply, without embellishment. They are lovely. This is a great cd to play when you want to relax and just hear simple melodies played beautifully.

A must-have for piano teachers.......2002-03-15

I am a piano instructor at a large conservatory where I instruct many younger players. This disc stays in the CD player in my studio almost constantly. Nowhere else will you find such a great collection of pieces which are in the standard teaching repetoire. The playing on this disc is very clean and clear, with great attention to each and every musical detail. My students have all benefitted from this fine recoding.

I can't believe no one thought of this before. A major pianist has recorded the music that my children play. Now that my they have heard Mr. Shehori's CD, my children started to play at a noticably higher standard.

Apart from the educational aspect, this CD is really a pleasure for me to listen to. I always loved these pieces (particularly Bach's Inventions and Schumann's Happy Farmer) Now I can finally hear them played by a great artist.

I do regret that Mr. Shehori didn't record more sonatinas by Clementi. I hope to see these in future Series.

Schnabel's inimitable Beethoven........2003-06-24

Artur Schnabel's reputation as an interpreter of Beethoven's piano sonatas was second to none at the time these recordings were made in the 1930s. His admirers asserted that hearing him play them was like hearing Beethoven himself at the piano. His detractors cited several of Schnabel's mannerisms as reasons for dismissing claims of classic status, in particular Schnabel's tendency to "throw away lines" here and there in the manner of an actor, and his tendency to "rush his fences" whenever approaching technical difficulties in the manner of a nervous horse-rider.

Browsers will be able to respond in their own way, and at trifling cost, as they listen to this second CD in a Naxos reissue of Schnabel's Beethoven Sonata Society recordings. There are five sonatas here, and thanks to Mark Obert-Thorn's astonishingly good restoration work Schnabel's playing, occasional smudges and all, has amazing immediacy and presence. Browsers who are attracted to Schnabel's Beethoven should bear in mind that once Naxos has reissued all is Beethoven solo piano recordings on 11 CDs the complete series might become available as a boxed set.

If you're looking at this page, you must already know that for many people and for seven decades, Schnabel's Beethoven Society recordings of the piano works have been the benchmark against which all others have subsequently been measured. These pioneering recordings have had many incarnations and currently here at www.Amazon.com alone one can find the complete set on Pearl, EMI and Classico d'Oro. Now Naxos is putting out their series, which will extend to nine volumes for the sonatas and two more for other piano works. Wizard recording producer Mark Obert-Thorn tracked down multiple sets of the rare 78 rpm discs in Britain, America and France and took the best he could find to make these new recordings. He got rid of things like pops and clicks while leaving in a soupçon of surface noise (even between movements - just like there would have been on the old 78s).

Introspective Piano, Take Two.......2000-02-08

I'm really glad to see (and hear) this CD, which is a follow-up to a collection that was so nicely programmed that I used to play it almost every evening for a few weeks. Now I have another CD as an after-dinner favorite. I knew the Brahms Intermezzos and Beethoven's Bagatelles, but many of the other pieces were new to me. All of the performances sparkle, and recorded sound is great.

Anything that starts off with Shura Cherkassky's delicious account of a Tango by Albéniz has got to have something going for it, and this set seems to score over and over again. It's an interesting piece of programming, since having got off to a Spanish start, we are led through Bach (traditionally the starter), Balakirev (his famously unplayable Islamey thrown off coolly by Julius Katchen), Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Gershwin, Gottschalk, Granados, Grieg, and Handel. One thing they certainly all have in common is the passion of the title, and they are well served by our guides, who include Tureck, Kempff, Kocsis, Lill, Barenboim, Argerich, Michelangeli, De Larrocha, Gilels, and Gavrilov. It is worth mentioning so many, since these are top names in their respective fields and it gives an indication of what you can expect from this set. And while you would rightly expect veteran Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha to give us the full treatment in Albéniz and Granados, listen to her delightful piece of Handel, which concludes the set. Recordings range in time from 1955 to 1998, and the freshness of the playing transcends changes in recording technology during those years. --Keith Clarke

Great Classical Piano.......2005-08-04

I picked up this CD because it had some of my favorite piano pieces of Bach, Brahms and Bartok on it.

The renditions on these discs are terrific. And every single selection is really worth listening to- this is some of the best classical piano out there. If you're like me and aren't really concerned about owning the complete Bach, Brahms, Chopin, etc, this is the disc to pick up for a good sampling of it all.

And it's a good value too. Two discs for the price of one!

When Emil Gilels made his first appearance in the West--in Florence on June 11, 1951--at the height of the Cold War, he must have felt the weight of history riding on his shoulders. He was the first Soviet musician sent to perform for Western audiences since Sergei Prokofiev had been entrusted with a similar mission 30 years earlier. As we can judge from Volume 5 in Doremi's Emil Gilels Legacy series, Gilels rose to the occasion magnificently. He opens Beethoven's "Appassionata" with great (though unexaggerated) pathos and progresses to climaxes of tremendous grandeur. His gale-force tempos in the finale may not scrupulously observe the composer's cautionary "Allegro ma non troppo," but Gilels never shortchanges the music's passion. He accelerates to an even more phenomenal tempo for the "Presto" in the coda, while negotiating it with laser-beam accuracy. The pianist plays the Russian works (by Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, and Balakirev) with his characteristic beauty of sound and magisterial command. Even in the furious onslaught of Islamey, Gilels still manages to make Balakirev's exotic textures luminous, glinting with colors that seem to come from another galaxy. The then 35-year-old pianist was not yet the stylish Mozartean he was to become 20 years later. Nevertheless, he invests each note in Mozart's anguished C Minor Sonata with a wealth of emotion. The result is a magical web of sounds--not authentically Mozartean by current standards, perhaps, but a performance in which the composer's profound humanity is palpable in its tenderness. --Stephen Wigler
