"Marie-Nicole Lemieux is a major talent, an artist of the first rank, a commanding presence and a thrilling interpreter."
Album Description
Marie-Nicole Lemieux started her career on a high note. In 2000, at the age of 24, she won the Queen Fabiola Prize (1st Prize) in Brussels, as well as the Special Lied Prize at the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium. The Canadian, American, and European medias have nothing but high praise for Ms. Lemieux. Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2005-11-07
An excellent compilation of folk tunes and violin concerto adagios, played masterfully by some of the world's most revered musicians. Features modern pieces (Korngold, Barber), which are a personal favorite of mine.
Thanks you Decca.......2005-01-23
My daughter is a violin student of 7 years and she has played 3 or 4 of these pieces for recitals. I bought the CD's so she could become familiar with the pieces as she was learning to play them. Now I find myself listening to the CD's almost every night when I go for my end of the day drive to relax. My favorites are the Mozart Concerto in G, the Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethoven's Romance in F on disc 2, but all the songs are exquisitely beautiful. I highly recommend it.
Exquisite music for the soul.......2004-06-14
These CDs have the most incredible selections of music on them. Listening to the violins has enabled me to complete papers for my doctoral level classes without the usual neck aches. This is soothing, exquistie music for the soul! Lovely!!
Indeed a joy forever!.......2003-05-22
Before buying this 2 CD set,I've read Reviews by Chicagodreamer,
who rated it as "Highly, highly recommended." His laudatory recommentation, I must say, is found "well justified."
Exquisite collection & performances, unbelievable value!!!.......2002-01-15
"Over 2 l/2 hours of the world's most beautiful music." These words on the cover are very close to true. What an incredible value this collection is!! So many of these compilations of this sort are cheaply produced, and those "greatest hits" collections are one trite piece after another -- after a while one runs screaming to the stereo to shut it off. However, this collection is top-notch, and the performers they chose are masterful musicians at the top of their game. Every selection is lovely, each one unfolding after the other in a sublime slide show of exquisite compositions performed by legends. This is TWO CDs of sparkling performances composed and performed by masters. There is not a bad selection or a piece of inferior quality in the entire lot.
The violin is an extraordinary instrument that, when played correctly, can pluck the heartstrings and stir the soul. It is played perfectly by each puppetmaster on each one of these wonderful pieces, and the experience of listening to this collection is an exquisite journey for the heart and spirit. Looking for a fantastic collection of exquisite pieces written and performed by genius? It's here. Highly, highly recommended!!

No fewer than 31 Brahms songs are performed here by a superb duo: the exquisite Argentinian mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink and the versatile British pianist Roger Vignoles, who has accompanied Fink memorably in several previous recital discs. Singing in impeccable German, the singer steers her velvety voice through one gem after another. The more popular songs range in mood from movingly dramatic ("Von ewiger Liebe") to lighter-than-air ("Vergebliches Ständchen"). In "Wie Melodien zieht es mir," Fink is able to shade the sound with complete naturalness while putting the song, not herself, in the foreground. The less immediately recognizable material includes "Der Schmied," in which the description of the blacksmith's hammer and bellows lets out Fink's full voice with no hint of roughness or exaggeration. She's unmatched today for delicacy (listen to the ravishing "An die Nachtigall") and disarming simplicity (as in Brahms's eternally fresh lullaby). Fink can sparkle, too, deliciously characterizing the girl singing about her lover, the hunter of "Der Jäger." Vignoles is as expressive and technically adroit as his partner. Harmonia Mundi contributes its usual immaculate sound. Like the Fink-Vignoles CDs of Schumann, Dvořák, Wolf, and Spanish repertoire, this disc is a joy and not to be missed! --Roger Pines
Customer Reviews:
Fine Brahms Songs.......2007-05-07
This collection of many of Brahms' most popular songs is a wonderful listening experience, which I have been playing over and over. The piano accompaniments are a major part of the success of the disc and the singing is very finely nuanced. Die Mainacht is my favorite but all of the lieder are well done.
Gloriously Committed Singing.......2007-04-30
This disk is self-recommending, for Bernarda Fink has emerged as one of the world's preeminent Lieder singers. Hers is a voice of shimmering beauty and intensity, distilling interpretations of uncommon emotional integrity. Her distinction in Lieder is all the more impressive in view of her accomplishments in opera, oratorio, and early music.
Anyone who heard her maiden Lieder recording, the Schumann recital on harmonia mundi france that included Frauenliebe und -leben, will have high expectations of her Brahms. This album does not disappoint. Her noble performances put her in the company of my favorite Brahms interpreters: Olaf Bär, Janet Baker, Elly Ameling, Jessye Norman.
For me, Brahms's Lieder, while utterly beautiful, are less compelling a body of work than Schubert and Schumann. Despite their indebtedness to Schumann, they seem to inhabit their own fragrant sound-world: one of dense harmonies, folk overtones, melodies that are both beautiful and reticent, suffused with melancholy and charm. Unrequited love and separation are constant themes. Fink and Vignoles are in complete accord with the composer, offering in each song a sensitively drawn miniature portrait. Every emotional nuance in verse and music is acknowledged and shared with us.
The first half of the disk includes several songs that are fairly uncommon in recital, with less assertive melodies and shifting harmonies. These are exquisitely realized by the duo. Also perfectly inhabited are favorites like "Von ewiger Lieber" and "Liebestreu" with their heavy burden of melodrama, or the ravishment of "Mainacht." Fink sings with an immediacy that renews familiar songs without ever alienating us. This is perhaps most touchingly evident in the famous Lullaby that closes the recital.
The recital includes more modest songs -- no fewer than 5 have the word "Mädchen" in the title, including 3 entitled "Mädchenlied." These are given fine, honest portrayals -- the setting of a text by Kapper (the second-to-last song on the recital) is especially haunting, as is the "Sapphische Ode" early on. Several songs in a more characterful enliven the second half half of the recital: "Der Schmied," "Vergebliches Ständchen," and "Sonntag." Fink's voice, so tender elsewhere, easily sallies forth with robust tones on these occasions.
One might lament the absence of the Op. 91 pair (Gestillte Sehnsucht, Geistliches Wiegenlied) that are so beloved of mezzos. For me, I would have relished hearing the exuberant "Meine Liebe is grün" in the context of this program. But these quibbles only accentuate a perfection that can't help but leave us wanting more. As I said, the disk is self-recommending. There are no weaknesses in evidence, just gloriously committed singing.

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing but hits.......2001-01-31
As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19
Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

This is James Galway's first CD with a new label, and it presents him at his most lyrical. Every selection is long-melodied and soothingly played, including an interesting transcription of the 2nd movement of Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Who would have guessed that a flute could substitute so handsomely for a guitar? Schubert's "Ave Maria" is mellow and sweet, Brahms's "Lullaby" is nicely accented, and he's well-matched with his wife in the "Barcarolle" from The Tales of Hoffmann. Two bonus tracks offer the world premiere of a haunting suite from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, composed by Howard Shore, and a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song," perhaps Galway's most famous piece. Along the way, there's a mesmerizing transcription of Ravel's "Pavane pour une Infante défunte" (originally for piano), a moving version of "Che faro
" from Gluck's Orfeo ed Eurydice, and more. Fans of Galway's won't want to miss this relaxing, beautifully recorded CD. --Robert Levine

Soothing..........2007-05-06
I suppose that James Galway is about the most reknowned flautist of our time. I would file this CD under the category of "light" classics. As such, it is a masterpiece. Not only does every track feature a beautiful melody, but as a whole the recording creates a mood of peace and calm. It is utterly soothing and relaxing. Of special interest for all of you "Lord of the Rings" is a suite based on thems from the movie trilogy. It has an appealing Celtic feel.
This CD takes you from the busy world and puts you out in "space".
James Galway's triumphant Deutsche Grammophon return.......2005-02-27
Fans of James Galway may not realize that he recorded on Deutsche Grammophon in the past, as a key member of the Berlin Philharmonic during the early 1970s; this CD is a splendid "return" to this recording label. It is a brilliant mixture of classical and popular music, representing Galway's uncanny ability of playing superb "Mood Music", aided by ample orchestral support from the London Symphony Orchestra. Among the bonus tracks are a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song" for which Galway has earned ample worldwide recognition and a haunting suite from film composer Howard Shore's scores for "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, playing themes associated with the Hobbits and their beloved The Shire.
Some Good Galway Crossover Selections.......2004-12-28
This new recording Sir James's First for DG in quite a long time.
Is a selection of uplifting pieces of music arrainged for flute
and orchestra. Ably abbetted by the LSO and assisted by his wife
Jeanne, who plays quite well too, Sir James shows that he can
still play the flute and the tin whistle with more than enough
talent and feeling. While some people may condemn this as "mood"
music, I find it quite refreshing. Although I can still hope that
there will be a couple recordings of flute concerti comming from
Mr. Galway in the near future. I have never had a problem with
classical artists doing what is now called "Crossover" I think
it gives them a much needed change of pace. After all one can
only play the classic flute liturature so much, and Sir James is
not the first solo artist to make such recordings. His
His performances of the selections on this CD are all quite good
to say the least. My favorites are the "Barcarolle" and "Annies
Song" and the Schubert "Ave Maria", which I think is the best
instrumental recording of this work since Isaac Stern's violin
recording for CBS. Klauspeter Siebel and the London Symphony
Orchestra do a wonderful job accompaning him in these works.
The recorded sound is more than acceptable and I can only hope
that this will be the first of many new James Galway CD's from
DG. Perhaps Sir James can do a disc or Two with the London
Mozart Players as well for DG too>

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Sings Brahms.......2006-05-20
Many informed music lovers know Brahms primarily through his large scale works: the symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and German Requiem. There is a tendency to overlook Brahms as a composer of songs. This is unfortunate as it tends to obscure the lyrical, intimate side of Brahms, throughout his work, by concentrating the listener's attention on Brahms as a master of large-scale form. Brahms's approximately 200 songs show a more intimate side of the composer and are well-worth hearing. They are lovely in their own right, and they will give the listener a deeper understanding of the Brahms of the symphonies and other extended pieces.
This six-CD set of Brahms lieder offers an overview of Brahms'song output from the beginning of his career to the end. Brahms, indeed, composed songs throughout his career. In these CDs, Dietrich Fisher- Dieskau is accompanied by four pianists: Gerald Moore, Wolfgang Swallisch, Daniel Barenboim, and Sviatoslav Richter. Thus it presents the listener with a variety of sylistic approaches to the accompaniment of lieder.
Most of Brahms's songs are simple and melodic. Brahms generally focuses on the mood of the song as a whole and does not try to shape phrases around specific words. Some of the songs will appear spare to those knowing the songs of Schubert or Schumann. Many show the great influence of folk music. Brahms's themes are, broadly, love found and love lost with the latter predominating as the composer grows older. Brahms tended to set texts by poets whom he knew or who grew up in his own home town of Hamburg.
Many of Brahms' better-known songs are in this collection, including, of course, the "Lullaby." Fischer-Dieskau sings Brahms's near-final work the "Four Serious Songs" opus 121 with great solemnity. This work was written upon the death of Clara Schumann. Another well-known song is "Regenlied" which Brahms used as the theme for the finale of his first sonata for violin and piano. There is much to be discovered in this compilation by repeated listening.
I particularly enjoyed the performance of Brahms's rarely-performed song-cycle "Die Schone Magelone" opus 33 in which Fischer-Dieskau is accompanied by Richter. This is a large-scale dramatic and romantic work, unlike most of the shorter songs. In it Brahms poured forth intimate feelings to a degree rare in the works he composed before or after. The cycle sets 15 poems by Ludwig Tieck and tells a story of medieval courtly love lost and, ultimately, won . It is intense and personal music.
I found it useful to get to know Brahms's songs through a cross-section beautifully performed by Fischer-Dieskau rather than to approach them piecemeal through individual recordings. Until recently, this set was available on EMI at a price nearly double the current price of the collection on Brilliant, making this new Brilliant release a real find. This set will open to the listener the world of Brahms' songs. This compilation should be irrestible to lovers of art song. It will show those familiar with Brahms's more famous works a new side of the composer.

Before there were the Three Tenors there was Jussi Björling, the great Swedish tenor who died in 1960 at the age of 49. His bright, sunny tone had a slight, emotion-laden tear in it that conveyed feeling as well as, or more than, any number of sobs and effects that other tenors use. His Carnegie Hall recital of September 24, 1955 has long been available; in addition, this CD features nine never-before released selections from that recital which either did not fit on the original LP or were omitted for some other reason. He can sing at any dynamic level, the voice is always secure, and his taste and musicianship, as always, are impeccable. I doubt we'll ever hear Tosti's Ideale sung more tenderly or "Che gelida manina" sung with such poetic abandon; the newly discovered Grieg, Sibelius, and Sjoberg songs are sung with an opera singer's--rather than a Lieder singer's--style, but it's doubtful anyone will complain. Björling fans should race to hear this; for those who came to opera after his heyday (or during the reign of other tenors), this will be a stunning ear-opener. A must have. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Magnificent.......2005-09-02
Some years ago I met an elderly gentleman who'd served as a co-pilot on a B-24 bomber during WWII. During a raid on a North German site their aircraft was badly damaged and they were forced to crash-land it in Sweden. The shaken but uninjured crew was picked up by the Swedish authorities and immediately interred (Sweden being a neutral country). They were sent to a dreadful and notorious Swedish internment camp--the largest and lushest hotel in Stockholm--and given something of an expense account. It just happened to be the same hotel where Jussi Bjorling had his digs.
Through a variety of happenings, the vet ended up befriending Bjorling, who he described to me as "one hell of a nice guy" and they became drinking buddies. He and his fellow aviators had front row seats at any and all recitals and apparently became society figures in cultured Stockholm. To my wonder and astonishment, this old Regular Joe fellow, no opera fan before Sweden, told me he was the guy who taught Jussi Bjorling the song "Pistol Packin' Mama." Now wouldn't we all pay good money to have heard him sing that!!
There's nothing more terrific than a great voice attached to a great guy who'd sit and drink with downed aviators and happily learn their favorite pop songs. This disc of music is as wonderful as the guy who recorded it.
"Bjorling".......2005-01-05
In a word - superb. This brings to mind the review of Bjorling's RCA LP "Bjorling in Opera" by Stereo Review's critic George Jellinek, shortly after it's release in 1959, which he ended by saying "highly recommended, especially for other tenors".
Frederick's Understatement........2004-12-22
It was 50 years ago that I met and fell in love with
the accompanist at the voice studio where I studied
for love of singing (i.e., mine was a modest voice).
She in turn introduced me to some of the great singers
then active, or who came through, Chicago. And also, her
own teachers and colleagues, including Dr. Rudolf Ganz and
Frederick Schauwecker. One day, when the topic of melody
came up, Dr Ganz suggested that all piano students should
hear Jussi Bjoerling deliver legato melody. And when Lynn
asked Mr. Shauwecker, who little praised anyone, even a client,
how Jussi did on the trip they were just back from, she was
astonished to hear him grudgingly admit that "Jussi is singing
like an angel. It can't possibly continue at such a level, even
for him." It didn't. As we found out a couple of weeks later
when we heard this recital live, it didn't "continue", it got
better. At the time I found it the greatest listening experience
of my life. Today, 50 years later, it still is. Whatever vocal
records you have by anyone, this is better. There are no equals.
"Like an angel" is one of Frederick's understatements.
Remastering is not perfect.......2004-07-20
This CD is a recording of one Carnegie Hall recital on September 24, 1955. Many composers are represented, including Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, Grieg and Sibelius to name a few. There is even a Stephen Foster - Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair. The accompanying literature has all the lyrics.
Jussi Bjorling is obvious a tenor in top form, but this recording forty years later omits the higher overtones of his voice. Nevertheless, this is a recording of the highest caliber that does justice to this talented man who died too young.
THE ultimate singing voice.......2004-05-22
This live concert cd contains some of the most fantastic singing ever by a human being and that goes both for the lyric and the dramatic repertoire. Why RCA have denied us this fabulous sound for all these years really beats me. I have long cherished Bjoerlings Troubadour recording with RCA, but compared to the Bjoerling sound on this cd, his Manrico sounds like a light Wiener Sänger. The sound on this cd is simply the most ravishing sound I have ever heard.

Ljuba Welitsch had a short career, her stardom spanning the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s. Perhaps this is because she gave so much of herself--even on records you feel she's operating on all cylinders. Her most famous role, Salome, is represented here by the closing scene with Fritz Reiner and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, recorded at the time of her triumphant New York debut. She was also a great Donna Anna, her rendition of the big arias from Don Giovanni full of fire and thrust. Tosca's "Vissi d'arte" is a passionate reading, one of the best on disc. The song disc is more variable but always interesting. A great singer, captured in her prime. -- Dan Davis

Half of Bulgarian soprano Ljuba Welitsch's Columbia output stems from her salad days at the Met, when her silvery voice cut across the footlights like liquid fire. The 1950 Tosca and Don Giovanni selections, as well as her incomparable Salome Final Scene with the fiery Fritz Reiner at the helm, sound more potent than ever in these 20-bit transfers from original source material. Also memorable are two delicately scaled Joseph Marx lieder and a peerless Strauss Cacille. Sadly, the 1952-3 lieder sessions find Welitsch in dire straits: her voice has acquired a papery edge, with perceptive decline in intonation and breath control. Give Paul Ulanowsky credit, though, for admirably maneuvering through the thankless, Crisco-thick piano "deorchestrations" of Strauss' Four Last Songs. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Enigimatic Flame!.......2003-11-14
This woman moved me! I felt exitement, finality, pain, passion, victory, sensuousness, and nostalgia of a time unknown to me. The Salome aria is the most convincingly and beautifully sung I have ever heard by far. The thread of sound is never broken. The lieder selections are very lovely and interestingly personal, not at all detached or serious; a joy. Strauss' Four Last Songs done with piano are quite effective as such.
The recorded sound is very impressive; a clean, full-bodied sound. Columbia's mono recordings are absolutely superior.
This soprano seemed to have something very important to say. There is an ever present urgency in her delivery, a haste, and a desperation that clings to the heart. As she sings, she invokes compassion, mystery, fear and joy.
Please hear this woman!
perhaps the most sensual of German lieder singers.......1999-08-22
This collection of Ljuba Welitsch's singing Strauss is an great example of a singer's cultural connection to a composer giving her an almost eerily innate feeling for the music. Welitsch's voice can only be described as sexy, in a pre-war German sort of way, silvery hard and focused in tone combined with a sensuality of expression that is unique. She breathes life and fire into this music in a way that later singers -- even the great Elisabeth Schwarzkopf -- could not.

This stunning release by mezzo (or contralto) Stephanie Blythe shows her dark, focused tone, intelligent and musical approach to the texts, and winning involvement. Schoenberg's re-orchestration of the final song from Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde is very different from the original; though sparse (only 13 instruments), it has great color, with wind instruments importantly highlighted and piano used surprisingly and effectively. Blythe and conductor John Nelson present the narrator's resignation strongly; there is agitation before true inevitability is accepted. A re-working by Hans-Werner Henze of Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder also emphasizes the wind instruments, and its refined transparency is well-suited to Blythe's mostly very lyrical, but occasionally outgoing and strong reading of the poems. Brahms's Alto Rhapsody gets a correctly intense and morbid reading, and Blythe's full sound is perfect for the occasion. The vocal group A Sei Voci and Ensemble National de Paris contribute handsomely. Highly recommended. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A lovely voice in search of a conductor.......2007-07-21
In recent years Stephanie Blythe has risen rapidly in the oepra world (she was featured in a recent Met broadcast of Puccini's Suor Angelica as the curelly imperious Pincipessa), and one can hear why. She has a plush, rich tone reminiscent of Jessye Norman, firmly produced without a wobble. If that were all this challenging recital needed, I would be very enthusiastic. But in two ways it falters badly. The worst is John Nelson's choppy, flat conducting, which is perfunctory half the time and ordinary the rest. The other is Ms. Blythe's way with the text. She must feel comfortable in german to select a program of brahms, Wagner, and Mahler, but her pronunciaiton sounds as if she learned the language syllabically, and the great exts of the Alto Rhapsody (Goethe) and the Abschied from Das Lied von der Erde (translated from the Chinese of Li Po) float by neturally, with hardly a glimpse of their demotional depths.
The classical music press greeted this CD quite favorably, like the Amazon reviewer here, but unless sheer vocalism is all you care about, I can't see how a recital in search of a conductor can be considered great. The classic recordings of all three works by Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have nothing to fear.
For the Brahms Alone ..........2007-05-23
Stephanie Blythe's voice is exquisite, and if you have never heard her, I can't imagine a better place to start than with Brahms' Alto Rhapsody. Gorgeous tone, such sensitivity ... if this were the only piece on the CD, it would worth the price and more. But we also have an intelligent rendering of the Wesendonck Lieder and enough of Das Lied von der Erde to have us baying for a recording of the whole. What a stunning recording -- may there be may many, many more from this wonderful person!
Promises kept and more.......2004-10-26
Stephanie Blythe further secures her position as the most exciting contralto singing today. In her previous recital album she proved that the hurdles of Bach and Handel were mere stepping-stones. Here she blossoms with extravagantly rich tone and intelligent musicianship in the Romantic repertoire of Brahms ('Alto Rhapsody'), Wagner ('Wesendonck Lieder') and Mahler (the final song 'Der Abscheid' from 'Das Lied von der Erde'). And not only does she prove that these deeply involving works lie perfectly in her control and range, she also imbues them with a rich warmth of timbre that is as fine as any recorded.
Collaborating with her again is John Nelson and Ensemble Orchestre de Paris (and the Ensemble A Sei Voci in the Brahms) and whether or not it was a joint decision between these two capable artists to use the Hans Werner Henze setting of the Wagner lieder and the Schoenberg orchestral reduction for the Mahler, the result is a freshness to the sonic approach that adds yet another dimension to this treasure of a CD. The transparency of orchestral colors coupled with the depth of Blythe's voice and interpretation are impeccable. This is a recording of tremendous importance - and beauty.
