Editorial Reviews
Samuel Adler, Professor of Composition, The Julliard School
"Congratulations to Elizabeth Patterson, Gloriae Dei Cantores, and Jim Jordan on producing this extraordinary recording. The singing is superb, the sound is outstanding, and it provides one with a truly spiritual as well as musical experience. I consider it a great privilege to have my music included on this beautiful record. In my estimation this musical product is the finest on the market today."
Album Description
Following on the success of Make His Praise Glorious, Gloriae Dei Cantores now continues a distinguished series of recordings dedicated to psalm settings by American composers. By the Rivers of Babylon shows an even wider range of style and includes several works recorded for the first time. From the lush romanticism of the setting of Psalm 137 by Charles Loeffler (composed in 1901) to the adventurous setting of De Profundis by Arnold Schoenberg (composed in 1950), Gloriae Dei Cantores explores the great variety of psalm settings by American composers. A recording not to be missed.

Moving, intense music........2006-04-30
I've had this album for a little over a year now and still listen to it regularly. It's a favorite in my car, especially in the early morning while driving my kids to school. The combination of the sunrise and the moving vocals combine to leave me feeling full of life, ready to move on with my day. The chorus is truly incredible, and with a decent sound system the feeling of being in the midst of all those deep voices is something memorable.
I love the sound and style of Russian music, and this CD has been wonderful when I'm in the mood for something more meaningful.
I'm not a music expert or Russian linguist, nor will you find me in a church on Sunday. I enjoy good music of all forms, and no matter what your religion or linguistic affiliation, this is excellent music that is sure to add something to your collection.
peaceful moment to soothe you and draw you closer to Him........2001-08-03
The themes and songs remind me of an ancient Russia when the Church is at peak and predominantly practiced at the whole of Russia.Just imagine yourself in one of those great cathedral with the choir singing and the priest celebrating the mass. The song that echoed in the great cathedral wall will surely put ones to heavenly realm,a sense of calm and joy one will always remember....
Aural Delight.......2001-02-06
Of all the music I own this cd is my favorite at this time. This group has a very rich and powerful sound. When I buy choral music this represents exactly what I am looking for. If you are like me you bought a Gregorian Chant cd and were disappointed becuse it is in unison and rather flat sounding: this is harmonious and lush. Each track is four part a capella. I cannot adequately express the pleasure I receive from this cd. I am not an audiophile or vocal technique expert but I know good music when I hear it; this certainly qualifies. The group has a very good blend and sings what seem to be difficult pieces very smoothly. I would describe the mood as invigoratingly soothing. If you like all-male choral works you will enjoy this. I will certainly be purchasing more work by this group in the future.
Excellent Russian Music.......2000-10-04
This is an excellent performance and resource. These days, it can seem that nothing less than an authentic performance will do, whether that necessitates playing Bach on 300 year old violins or Liszt being played by a full-blooded Hungarian. And with the amount of recordings becoming available from countries with few previous U. S. releases, it can seem that only a Russian ensemble can truly perform Russian music. Slavyanka's CD proves that philosophy to be false: an American choir can deliver an excellent account of Russian choral music.
I'm not sure if this is professional, semi-professional, or a group that meets weekly, but the results are quite good. Recording quality here is generally good and the choir has the requisite low bass section (the first track will let you know that). There are times when intonation and ensemble seem to slip away slightly, which keeps this recording from cracking the upper echelon. Some of the soloists seem uncertain at times, as well.
The inclusion of texts in Cyrillic letters, transliterated Russian, and English is an excellent addition that I wish CDs used more often. The texts make it easier to understand the message and to learn about the Russian language (definitely not the easiet language in which to sing). In fact, the CD booklet is so big that it scarcely fits into the jewel box.
I enjoy having this CD in my library and I would encourage those interested in choral music, Russian music, or even those learning Russian to buy it. I can't think of a better way to learn about a language and a culture.
Slavyanka: Small Chorus - Large Sound.......2000-03-29
Slavyanka Men's Chorus has the ability, through magnificent dynamic contrasts, to sound small and intimate, but can sound large as a Russian theological academy chorus. Their work on this disc is impeccable. The accompanying booklet of program notes is superior, and is in multiple languages. The inclusion of the text of the liturgical music in several languages, including Slavonic and transliterated English pronunciation of the Slavonic, is a wonderful addition. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

Spiritually Uplifting -- No Matter What the Musical Style; Peter the Great's Artistic Triumph Brought to Light in Music.......2007-07-12
I bought this CD with a foreknowledge of the excellence not only of the performing ensemble and its director, but also of the repertoire of sacred Orthodox choral music via Rachmaninov's Vespers and Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (which came long after the works represented on this disc, but are faithful, overall, to the homophonic and harmonic quality and style of traditional Russian church music). I was surprised, as many other reviewers, to find such polyphony in the works herein, since I was under the impression that the Church forbade such musical devices. However, it seems that with the fall of the Tsar (or, more correctly, his decline, since the Vespers are from 1915 and the Tsar did not abdicate, nor the government fall, till 1917) the Church became more in control of itself and could place such restrictions on composers like Rachmaninov, but in the days of Peter the Great, when some of these works were composed and the style of the rest was developed, the Tsar controlled art and religion and if he wanted a Western style in his country's sacred music, then he could have it. Taken in this light, the "profane" style of some of these works is not shocking and is instead rather delightful; we see the proof of Peter's Westernisation of Russia in his capital, St. Petersburg, and in the art and architecture that flourished under him, but to hear it (and performed so excellently, too!) is a delightful little history lesson.
And aside from the historical implications, which the attached booklet illumines carefully with regard to each composer (it also contains the texts in Slavonic (in Cyrillic lettering, no less), English, French, and German), the whole disc is spiritually enlightening. To say that the polyphony of Sarti, Galuppi, or even Titov is nothing more than profanity is to say that Bach can do nothing to spiritually enlighten either; or to say that such a style is contrary to the prayerful nature of the Orthodox Church is to say that Bach's Magnificat or B minor Mass nixes his contribution to Lutheranism. The polyphony on this disc is indeed plentiful, but fugal counterpoint is reserved for the Alleluia at the conclusion of Sarti's "Now the Powers of Heaven" and the text "O Passover of incorruption, the salvation of the world!" concluding Galuppi's "In the Flesh Thou Didst Fall Asleep." It seems that only the Italians, after all, were interested in such "intellectual" church music--the native Russians hold their own as regards the spiritual style of their music. All of the polyphony, regardless of national origin, is intelligent and beautiful, and ranks with the best of Handel. Additionally, the last part of the disc contains some tracks by Bortniansky and Vedel that exemplify the genre of the "choral concerto"--not precisely equivalent to, but most resembling, the Western concerto grosso. It is another fascinating glimpse into a little known style with which, thanks to this disc, we can become acquainted.
I will not attempt to contend, however, with the point that the more traditional music here is perhaps most uplifting of all, if we must treat the different styles represented as if in contest. Bortniansky's "Let My Prayer Arise" is one of my favourite tracks, and the anonymous hymn to the Virgin Mary is a beautiful setting featuring the help of Vladimir Miller, a Russian basso profondo who brings the basses down to low D's, B-flats, and (if I'm not mistaken) G's, and who will not be unfamiliar to those acquainted with this group's recording of Rachmaninov's Vespers. To close, I will note the excellence of the choir and conductor--the sopranos are never full of vibrato, the basses are strong on low and high notes alike, and the tenors and altos have lovely tone that enriches the harmonies; the soloists are well-chosen and perform beautifully; and overall the group's sense of direction is excellent and firm, thanks largely in part to their regional proximity to the birthplace of these pieces, and also to Paul Hillier's remarkable direction, which brings a new freshness to the performance of Western polyphony and Eastern devotional choruses alike, and conjoins them most marvellously in accordance with the will of the composers and of the Tsar.
Beautiful! Beautiful!.......2007-01-26
The Powers of Heaven is just that, a slice of heaven. The voices are so beautiful and rich, I can just imagine that the angels themselves are singing! I have been searching for the Cherubic Hymn sung in the style of our litergy at Annunciation Orthodox Church in Houston. This is recorded so touchingly, and to my delight, I now have new songs from this album to add to my lists of favorites. The Powers of Heaven is powerful indeed!
Russian Orthodox Singing? Not!..........2005-10-31
Beautiful choral music devoid of true Russian soul. Westernized to a degree of being unrecognizable. It comes from the "western" school of Rusian choral art and has nothing in common with the prayerful and deeply spiritual dimension of the Orthodox faith.
The musical splendour of St Petersburg.......2005-06-22
St Petersburg is famous for the magnificance of its architecture and this CD explore that splendour in music terms. Peter the Great drove Russia into the modern world with his modernisation drive, and without this Russia may have remained in the middle ages and certainly no match against the onslaught of tyrants such as Napoleon and Hitler.
With his modernisation drive Peter the Great brought in Western composers, mainly from Italy where the latest musical fashions were being wrought at the time. Teachers of composition would likely have used examples such as Palestrina, Lassus, Gabrielli and Josquin as examples. The teachers must have been highly conservative for Vasily Titov writes 12-part counterpoint late in the 1600's when this sort of multi-part polychoral writing was going right out fashion - clearly his Italian teachers had little time for the more avant garde trends set by the likes of Monteverdi, fadish madrigalian trends being thus noticeably absent. The results are an extraordinary mixture of Russian Orthodox stylistic tendencies with the compositional principles of the Seconda Prattica, where despite the importation of Western techniques, the very Russian compositional character comes through strongly. Titov is arguably a good a composer as Russia has ever produced.
With later composers such as Bortniansky, there seems to be a greater awareness of the latest Western trends, perhaps even those of the up-and-coming Viennese group of composers such as Haydn, although Italian composers such as Durante were still highly dominant amongst conservative circles at the time. There is certainly a hint of the gallant style entering into the writing.
This is all very rewarding music - except for those who are want to walk through the magnificant architecture of St Petersburg - such as the Hermitage, and the Petershof, bemoaning the fact that Russia didn't remain in the Middle Ages. Some of the comments seen below seem almost reminiscent of those of the oppressive Council of Trent in their Papal condemnation of gloriously rich multipart contrapunctal writing. The importation of the Spirit of the Renaissance and the new Humanism had clearly ushered a new age for Russia.
The choral singing here is truly wonderful with fine tone and intonation throughout, as you would expect with Paul Hillier in charge. The recording is good - clean and clear.
This is a highly recommendable recording.
Exquisite Singing - Interesting Music.......2004-09-28
The music on this CD is a fascinating time capsule. In 1712 Peter the Great moved the Russian capital to St. Petersburg. Opening Russia to the influences of the West, he invited European artists and craftsmen, including Italian composers, to come to Russia, and sent Russian composers to study in Italy, to learn modern techiques. Thus, this 18th century music is recognizably Italian, even that written by the Russian composers like Bortniansky. And yet, the evocative Russian Orthodox texts have inspired a uniquely spiritual depth of expression. The title work, "Now the powers of heaven" by Giuseppe Sarti, is lush and beautiful, and reminded me of the Lotti "Crucifixus".
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is wonderful. I don't normally enjoy music from this period, but their singing was so perfect it captivated me totally. Sopranos had a full sound but not much vibrato; intonation was flawless; expressive but still precise. This is the first recording of theirs I have heard. It won't be the last.

This is all very rewarding music, reminiscent of the magnificant architecture of St Petersburg - such as the Hermitage, and the Petershof, even if it leaves me wishing there were more works by Titov represented here. The importation of the Spirit of the Renaissance and the new Humanism had clearly ushered a new age for Russia.
The choral singing here is truly wonderful with fine tone and intonation throughout, as you would expect with Paul Hillier in charge. The recording is excellent - clean and clear with the usual enhanced refinement that you would expect from a DSD recording.
This is a highly recommendable SACD release.

Customer Reviews:
More chant of great power and intensity from Anatoly Grindenko.......2005-07-05
The Russian Orthodox music presented here comes from the music for Great Lent, which is a meditation on the meaning of Holy Week. Great Lent or Velikiy Post, is the most important and one of the longest of the four Lenten periods in the year. It opens with a powerfully meditative chant 'Let all mortal flesh keep silent' which is specially sung only once a year along with the Old Testament lamentation 'By the rivers of Babylon'. The music here is, as usual with Orthodox chant, profoundly solemn and deeply meditative - some would say even mystical.
The Russian Patriachate Choir is made up of twelve singers, as was the tradition in small churches in ancient Russia. The choir sing their liturgical music according the strictest musicological research into the pratices of old Russia, much of which were lost in the political turmoil of last century. Anatoly Grindenko is on a journey of rediscover of a musical heritage and is a true pioneer of the Russian early music movement. He is developing a very strong following amongst cognescenti in the Western world for whom he has has developed something of a cult following. We are completely indepted to Opus 111 for the excellent series of recordings that they made of this group, each one of which is worth collecting, for they belong in the collection of anyone with a serious interest in Early Music. Yet they are so powerfully communicative that they should be heard by anyone who has even the slightest interest in chant.
Excellent recording as usual from Opus 111.
