Earl Wild plays Gershwin
Editorial Reviews
ARG, July/Aug. 1998
Greatest praise for Earl Wilds piano transcriptions. Theyre a marvel, as good as anything Liszt might have written.
Classics CD, July 1998
This disc is a collectors piece. Whiteman and Wilds reading of the 'Rhapsody' is extraordinarily vigorous and alive.
Album Description
This historic Gershwin recording includes the first complete "Rhapsody in Blue" recorded in 1945 with Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra. Also on the disc are Mr. Wild's legendary 1976 performances of his popular piano transcriptions, "Grande Fantasy on Porgy and Bess" and "Seven Virtuoso Etudes". Completing this historic recording are the "Three Preludes" recorded in 1964.

INCREDIBLE PIANO PLAYING!.......1999-12-03
I purchased Earl Wild's first recording of these pieces on vinyl in 1978, and literally wore it out from playing it over and over. What incredible technique and musicianship! This newer recording on CD is just as amazing. If you wish to hear great Gershwin melodies transcribed -ala- Franz Liszt's operatic fantasies, then this is for you.
Wild About Wild!.......1998-12-18
One of the most interesting pianists before the public today is Earl Wild. Critics have never known quite what to do with Mr. Wild. Discs like this one are a big part of the reason. Mr. Wild is a super virtuoso on the order of a Horowitz or a Cziffra. However he has always very cheerfully played what interests him, regardless of what critics would think. This marvelous CD is Gershwin's music as filtered thru the mind of a Liszt or a Godowsky. Especially enjoyable is Wild's variations on "Someone to Watch Over Me". There is an error in the Amazon.com notes: The Porgy & Bess Fantasy is by Wild, not Percy Grainger. Fans of Gershwin or fans of virtuoso piano will both enjoy this charming (and amazing) CD.

Earl Wild's first performance of Rhapsody in Blue was a live 1942 broadcast with Toscanini, which effectively typecast the young pianist as a Gershwin specialist. Three years later Wild was invited by Paul Whiteman (who premiered and first recorded the work with the composer at the keyboard) to participate in the work's first uncut recording, reissued for the first time here on CD. True, Glenn Osser's re-orchestration with an added 16-voice choir borders on kitsch; and Whiteman's conducting, though snappily paced, has the subtlety of an avalanche. Wild's breezy fingerwork and stylish flair, however, saves the day. The pianist serves up his own Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Gershwin songs and his Grande Fantasy on Porgy and Bess with slightly more dash and abandon in these 1976 recordings than his later Chesky remakes, and he delivers the Three Preludes with uncluttered directness. A delicious reissue. --Jed Distler

Astounding pianism -- just don't listen to it in one sitting.......2005-03-20
This CD seems to overlap with another CD on the Chesky label. Both contain Earl Wild's Fantasy on Porgy and Bess and the seven Etudes based on Gershwin's music. This disc also has Rhapsody in Blue and Gershwin's Preludes.
Wild's pianistic facility is absolutely astonishing. He does some wonderful things with Gershwin's music. Highlights include "Embraceable You" and some of the sections of the Porgy and Bess Fantasy ("Summertime", "Bess, you is my woman now" and "It aint necessarily so" come to mind). He also plays the three Preludes with conviction and panache. However, Gershwin is not Chopin, and there is only so much one can mine from this music. If one tries to listen to this entire CD in one sitting, one can become aware of the piano as a percussion instrument. I am not certain if this is a function of the music (Gershwin), the pianist (Wild) or the recording (AAD). So often when I listen to a great pianist play solo work by Chopin, Liszt or Ravel, for example, I can lose myself in the music and virtually forget the medium. That doesn't happen with this recording for me.
Still, in small doses, this is an extraordinary disc, and I'm glad to own it.

A historic and sparkling programme!.......2005-01-29
Remastered in 1997, this amazing recording displays Earl Wild at his very best.
The Programme includes: Rhapsody in Blue (recorded 1945), Earl Wild 's fantastically stunning 'Seven Virtuoso Etudes' (1976), Wild's 'Grande Fantasy on Porgy and Bess' (1976) and Gershwin's Three Prerludes for Piano (1964).
I'm learnng a few of the Virtuoso Etudes at the moment (which, by the way are his famous transcriptions of: The Man I Love, I Got Rhythm, Embracable You, Fascinating Rhythm, Somebody Loves Me, Liza & Lady Be Good) and finding them the biggest challenge I've ever had. I'm also having lot's of FUN as well!
But I was astonished when I heard Earl Wild play them Double the speed I though physically possible...!
Earl Wild is known as the last of the great Virtuostic pianis-composers. At a grand age of 90 now, he is still stunning.
The greatest recording of Earl Wild playing George Gershwin you'll ever hope to have. A fantastic listen. I spend hours listening.
Fantastic for the pianist, the aspiring pianist, the Gershwin-lover and/or the enthusiastic listener - It doesn't matter.
A historic and virtuostic delight!

Album Description
American pianist Richard Dowling performs virtually all of Gershwin's original works for solo piano along with several new transcriptions of Gershwin improvisations from disc recordings and player piano rolls. Dowling transcribed several of the tracks himself including a world premiere of Gershwin's own three-minute rendition of the main theme of "Rhapsody in Blue." Rounding out the disc are Earl Wild's Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Themes by Gershwin.
Customer Reviews:
This guy is AMAZING!.......2002-12-08
I heard one of Dowling's concerts and he's awesome! I play this CD in my car and almost got a speeding ticket because of it. Richard really knows the Gershwin style. It's upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to over and over.
He's Got Rhythm!.......2001-08-31
Richard's got the most amazing fingers (and ears)! He's such a good pianist that you'll swear you're hearing old George playing himself. If you love music from 1920s and 30s New York, this is about as authentic as it gets. The Earl Wild pieces at the end will blow you away. You'll want to listen to this CD over and over because the music is happy and the execution is perfect.
Richard Dowling has found teh Gershwin Way to play.......2001-08-17
The masterful work displayed on this CD is a pleasure to listen to. The speed with which the keystrokes are perfectly executed is simply astounding. I have only had the CD for about a week and have enjoyed it completely many times.

Customer Reviews:
Great performers = Great performances!.......2004-07-31
The Toscanini family, over the years, have consistently missed the boat when it comes to re-issuing broadcast material by Arturo Toscanini. These performances by Maestro Toscanini are simply the best these pieces have ever received. The sound isn't great but with such charisma flowing between soloists, orchestra & conductor--who cares? I disagree with music fan from nyc who stated that Levant and Toscanini are at odds with each other. Au contraire! True, there are some slip-ups in the performance but it should be remembered these are live performances and mistakes can happen. That said, Toscanini and Levant strike a unique rapport with each other with Levant being inspired to play better than he would have if Toscanini weren't there. As for the Goodman episode in "Rhapsody"--that again is part of performing music live. Instead of straining at gnats, the overall quality of the performance is overwhelming great. "An American in Paris" is played with 2 slight cuts but is so delightfully done that one can hear Toscanini and the NBC Symphony actually smile as we hear this affectionate performance. The Goodman solos on the three pop songs at the end (skillfully led by MGM's music director Johnny Green) come as very welcome additions indeed! Okay BMG, let's have some more broadcast goodies from the Toscanini archives, like maybe the Schumann 2nd or the Mendelssohn 3rd!
Toscanini and Gershwin.......2003-01-11
...may at first seem an odd combination, but after hearing this disc I can say that these performances give quite a bit of pleasure. The Maestro approaches these pieces with honesty, attention to detail, and rhythmic verve, giving them a lean, taut orchestral sound, which is entirely appropriate. "An American in Paris" is played in a straightforward manner, without stopping long to look at the sights, thereby tightening its loose construction, which was always Gershwin's compositional weakness. The slower sections have a real songfulness and the Charleston episode is played with clear rhythms and "snap". The Rhapsody is given a similar performance, straight and clear. Wild's legendary playing of this piece is colorful and virtuosic. Goodman's short contribution, sadly, is marred by a loud squeak at a change of register.
The Concerto is much less successful, but then with all its wonderful thematic material, it is the weakest of the three compossitions. The personal anathema between conductor and soloist is legendary, and it shows. Toscanini attempts to keep the piece moving, to minimize its episodic construction, and Levant clearly resents the constrictions put on him. He jumps entrances and plays with a thin, hard sound, which he did not have in other performances. The tempi are not the right ones, either: the first movement and last movements are both too slow and stiff.
These performances are all "live", recorded off the air over an AM transmission, and the transfers are not from "primary" sources. The sound is thin and shallow throughout, both in the broadcasts from Studio 8-H (the Concerto and "Paris") and that of the Rhapsody, from Carnegie Hall.
