Geminiani: Concerti grossi, Op. 3
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Geminiani was a talented composer, and one of the greatest violinists of his day (he died in 1762). His made his career largely in England, and was a colleague of both Corelli, who was his teacher, and Handel. His concertos follow what Corelli called the Church Sonata form--generally four movements in a slow-fast-slow-fast pattern. Also like Corelli, Geminiani published very little music, there being only three collections of concertos of which Opus 3 was the most important and popular. They are exceptionally well performed by Fabio Biondi, who is a real master of the Baroque violin. Sonics and presentation are truly first class as well. --David Hurwitz

Excellent performance of a baroque masterpiece.......2004-07-20
The concerto grosso is best listened to as a regular concerto instead of as a chamber piece like a string quartet. All of these concerto are from opus two and three and belong in everyone's colection (not just baroque fans). I am no expert on classical music and this is the only performance that I have heard. The capella I. give a spirited peformance making each ove the over ten peices highly individual. I liked this disc so much I plan to buy the other two Geminiani discs by Naxos. Like I said I have not heard other perfornces but I can't imagine it could be better done. pPlease excuse typos I have a neurolocal disease

Noble melancholy.......2000-12-06
Before the late, galante Baroque familiar to drive-time classical music listeners, usually in the form of Vivaldi, there was a romantic Baroque. Romantic Baroque sought expressiveness in the midst of its contrapuntal intensity. J. S. Bach is a familiar late example of this deeply-felt Baroque intensity. Geminiani is another example who deserves a wider audience.
He gets just a footnote in the textbooks because he was not responsible for major technical innovations. His contemporaries referred to him as 'Il Furibondo,' sensing a certain wildness in his rhythmic and melodic intentions. This is not Baroque music for the dinner, the bathtub, or the drive home. This is Baroque music that demands your attention.
The concerti in minor keys display the most inspired melodies, and fortunately they predominate. Their contrapuntal depth is always several layers deeper than you'll hear in Vivaldi. The several reprises in Op. 3, no. 6, and the unusual gigue of the final Allegro will strike you with their inventiveness, as will the remarkable opening and fugato of the G minor No. 2.
This is a good performance and recording of these remarkable works. Geminiani is a composer who will serve you well to enoble your melancholy moods.

13 assorted selections.......2005-10-17
13 pieces by famous/not so famous baroque composers provide a wider breadth of experience than most albums. This is a quality selection useful for just listening, relaxing, entertaining, meditating, or just background music. Lots to like here. Enjoy!
A baroque cd I turn to again and again........2004-01-20
As I have stated in other classical reviews, I am not an expert on classical music, but I highly recommend this CD to anyone looking for a satisfying collection of baroque works. The well known composers are here, i.e. Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, and it also may introduce listeners to baroque composers they may not have heard before, i.e. Marcello, Locatelli, Torelli. An all around great Baroque experience.

Baroque from its birthplace.......2005-09-30
According to the Wikipedia, 'The popularity and success of the "Baroque" was encouraged by the Catholic Church when it decided that the drama of the Baroque artists' style could communicate religious themes in direct and emotional involvement.' This holds true for Baroque music, by and large. The Baroque period is roughly 1600-1750, after the Renaissance and before the age of Classical music.
Baroque music often uses Renaissance features such as polyphony and counterpoint. However, it goes far beyond this predecessor, adding elements such as ornamentation, greater orchestration, less reliance on a capella singing, stronger dominant melody lines, and perhaps the two greatest innovations to come down to modern times - a great concern for documentation (scoring, particularly for individual instruments) and a solidification of the Western tonal scales, major and minor. This makes Baroque music 'seem more like regular music' to the typical Western listener today than Renaissance and earlier music would seem.
This disc is a compilation of pieces released on vinyl by Sony in the 1970s. It has a cross-section of the Italian Baroque composers - the Baroque age is generally considered to have been born in Italy. Vivaldi is the towering figure in this group, but other composers such as Albinoni, Marcello, Geminiani, Locatelli, and Scarlatti also rose to prominence. Many of the pieces contained here may sound familiar to the average listener even as the composers are not as well known.
Each piece on this disc is a concerto. Concertos in this sense have a primary orchestra and a smaller group of soloists or single solo - this is a Baroque innovation that would transform into the more familiar Classical concerto in the next music period. Four of the concerti here have the oboe as the counter instrument, while one uses violins as the primary musical foil.
The performers here are Le Florilegium Musicum de Paris and I Solisti Veneti, under the direction of Claudio Scimone. Known in Europe, some of these recordings were not previously released in North America until the transition to CD was made. The performances here are solid and well crafted, if not particularly well known. This is an example of the many musical talents in Europe that have long been underappreciated in American circles. The Sony transfer from analog to CD format has been expertly done.
This is great and imminently affordable collection of this wonderful music, deserving of a place in any music library.
Another great Baroque CD out of print . . ........2002-02-13
I found this cd at Virgin about 2 years ago when I was first compiling a Classical music collection. After buying (usually at bargain prices) over 400 Classical discs, this Sony release remains one of my favorite Baroque anthologies.
When I used to think about Baroque music, the first (and usually only) names that immediately came to mind were Vivaldi and Bach (and maybe Handel if I had a moment to think about it). This disc opened my eyes (and ears) to composer that up until I purchased this disc I had never knew existed. T. Albinoni's piece is wonderful and catchy; Geminiani's concerto grosso is graceful; Pietro Locatelli's concerto is dynamic and vibrant; Scarlatti's concerto for oboe and string exciting; and of course Vivaldi's pieces are predictably fun and engaging.
I simply adore this disc, and listen to it at least once a month. Although originally recorded in 1974, Sony has done a great job remastering these analog recordings. The remastering is so good that I can't even hear any background noise whatsoever (it's practically as clear as a DDD issue). If you ever come accross this disc (either used or cut-out), don't be afraid to purchase it. It offers some great music by lesser known but wonderfully talented Baroque composers, and hopefully it will inspire you to seek out other works by these same artists.
Music as beautiful as Venezia.......2001-12-02
When most people think of Italian baroque music they think of Vivaldi. A few others may remember to add Albinoni to the list as a result of the unprecendented popularity of his adagio for organ and strings in tear jerker films like Gallipoli an others. few will remeber any of the ither great composers if the Italian Baroque. This CD is an excellent way to refresh the memory and become familiar with some excellent music which is no less beautiful than Vivaldi. Indeed, the during the period from 1650-1750 Itlay priduced a number of composers that helped shape the baroque musical repertiote and standards. The fact that the violin was perfected in Cremona and Verona and the piano was invented in Italy contributed to this phenomenon. This CD features music from Vivaldi's contemporarires, Gemniniani, Marcello, Albinoni and Locatelli. Their concertos are distinctly beautiful. Locatelli emerges as ine of the finest writers for the violin that ever was and Marcello does for the oboe what Beethoven much later would do for the piano. This CD can serve as a door to other musical discoveries. So, after you've listened to these excerpts go and look for individual collections.

Terrible sound........2006-07-04
The concerti are wonderful in themselves. The performances are a bit old-fashioned, but quite elegant-sounding. The main drawback is just flat-out terrible sound. The music sounds muted somehow as if the sound engineers just fiddled too much with it. Also, each concerto is on one track, which is just a dreadful habit that some record companies have. Still, I guess if you want to listen to these concerti you don't have much other choice than this recording.
rdc.......2004-10-10
I owned the old I Musici version of this issued about 30 years ago on monaural; it fast became my favorite record of the baroque; but it's long out of print, my phono is broken, and there is no substitute but this. This performance is durable, lighter in texture than I Musici, not quite with the same gloss as the old, original ensemble. Don't overlook the opportunity to hear & love this music over and over. We call them classics because we get to know every note, and never get tired of them.
Musical gold........2002-07-23
You can't do any better than this performance and recording in classical music. Its just that simple. There is perfection in everything here. Geminiani is not well known, but once upon a time Bach himself had to be rescued from obscurity. The textures are absorbing, this is not Vivaldi. But it is the work of a surpassingly great composer. You'll buy dozens of classical CD's and not come anywhere close to the excellence of this one.
Too bad this album is not as known!.......2000-08-16
This is one of the best Baroque albums I have ever heard. If you are looking for something to take you back in time, this is the album!
A Baroque treasure house!.......2000-08-05
I stumbled upon this album a couple of years ago, and am glad I came across it. It is one of the best Baroque albums I have ever heard. Unfortunately, Geminiani is not as well known as some of his comtemporaries which is a real shame. This entire album just carries you along from movement to ever-changing movement.

Customer Reviews:
Fun CD.......2004-02-09
It's probably fair to say that this is Susan Nigro's most popularistic CD. Both "Little" and "Tunes" from the title are aptly chosen. These certainly aren't monumental works, but fun, pleasant tunes. That's largely true of her other CDs too, but this one more so. In this case, that includes several cute, jazzy tunes, like "Take Five." If you're looking for profound works, this is not the CD for you, but if you want something light-hearted, this is it.
Speaking in generalities about Nigro's performance, it's pretty clear that she's a very capable performer, and this particular CD does a good job of showing off flashy technique, such as in Bozza's "Burlesque." Yes, I did say "flashy technique"; the contrabassoon is an amazingly agile instrument.
My only concern about Susan Nigro's performance here and in her other CDs regards her tone. It's a good tone to be sure, so I wouldn't let that dissuade you from buying her CDs. Still, it doesn't strike me as bassoon-family enough. Expecially at high volumes in the middle and low registers, it sounds a tad too saxophone-like for my personal tastes. A saxophone sound is fine, provided that it comes from a saxophone! Her upper-register sound, on the other hand, especially at lower volumes, is quite sweet and beautiful. The slow, lyrical middle section of that same Bozza "Burlesque" shows that well.
One of my least essential but most played CD's!.......1999-10-09
Turn up the bass response on your CD player for some good Brobdingnagian fun. Susan Nigro is a master of her big old instrument & it's good to see her step out from the bassoon section for this outing.
