John Blow - Venus & Adonis / Joshua ˇ Finley ˇ Blaze ˇ Jacobs
Editorial Reviews

Here we have the very first English opera, with good gossip behind it to boot: John Blow composed the work for private performance at the English court, with King Charles II's longtime mistress Moll Davis as Venus and their illegitimate 9-year-old daughter playing Cupid. Venus and Adonis isn't just a historical curiosity, though: it's a full-scale Versailles-style opera in miniature, the near-equal of Purcell's more celebrated Dido and Aeneas (evidently composed for similar circumstances). Retired countertenor René Jacobs made quite a splash through the 1990s conducting early opera from Monteverdi to Mozart; the liveliness and dramatic sensitivity that made his reputation as a conductor are much in evidence here. Soprano Rosemary Joshua is excellent in many ways, but she occasionally lets her vibrato spread wide enough to carry her off-pitch; aside from that sporadic flaw, she is a superb Venus: sweet, sensuous, and, in her lament on Adonis's death, affecting without ever sounding overblown. Baritone Gerald Finley as Adonis nicely blends tenderness and virility; as Cupid, countertenor Robin Blaze is certainly no prepubescent girl (presumably Charlotte Church was unavailable) and the role lies just a bit high for him, but he sings with verve, wit, and genuine charm. --Matthew Westphal

Why do we only remember Purcell?.......2005-02-26
I love Dido and Aeneas, and am a fan of Purcell's songs and choral works as well, so it was a good bet I would enjoy the work of John Blow- he was Purcell's teacher, after all. Listening to "Venus and Adonis" is like listening to "Dido" the first time- wonderful, embellished solo lines and enchanting choral work. I also recommend checking out Blow's "Ode on the Death of Mr. Henry Purcell," which is a counter-tenor duet. I saw "Ode" and "Dido" on the same program one evening, with Baroque instruments and staging- it changed my entire perspective on music. Give John Blow a listen, and you won't be sorry.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-11
John Blow (1649-1708), in his official posts as organist, musician for the virginals, was also expected to supply a great quantity of church music, royal odes and secular choral music of an occasional character to celebrate events at court. Consequently, he wrote very little for the professional stage. A notable exception is his opera 'Venus and Adonis',which he called " A Masque for the Entertainment of the King".
The love story of Venus and Adonis, told by Ovid in Book 10 of the 'Metamorphoses',inspired a great many poets and artists of the Baroque period including Shakespeare. Blow's opera associates the theme of the hunt and its dangers to that of love and the wounds inflicted by Cupid's arrows. At the end of Act II of 'Venus and Adonis' the descending choromaticism of the ostinato ground with which the dance of the Graces concludes, darkens the mood after the playful arias of Cupid, and is like a premonition of the return of the mortally wounded Adonis and the grief of Venus. Blow's harmonic daring was disturbing to many listeners in that era, but not so to the 20th century ear that is more accustomed to hearing works that deviate drasticlly from the rules of strict harmony.
This little opera is really quite a 'gem' and contains some very entertaining scenes. Although the soloists were all of good quality, my interest was captured by the duets, trios and quartets scattered here and there thruout the opera. They were absolutely delightful to hear and very well sung. I especially enjoyed the chorus of the Hunstmen, Shepherds and Adonis. Robin Blaze as Cupid did not impress me at all; because the required voice range was really too high for him, his diction suffered greatly, and as many times as I have listened to this opera, I still have to follow a script when he sings. That, by the way, is not usual for him; his diction is quite good most of the time. The countertenor Christopher Josey (humtsman) was excellent; his voice was strong and clear. It's really quite an enjoyable opera, and Rene Jacobs (who I'm very glad is not singing anymore) pulls it together neatly and nicely.
Outstanding orchestral playing.......2000-06-07
So often in an opera CD all people seem to listen for is the singers. What is extraordinary about this one is the amazing playing of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment - without doubt the best period instrument orchestra in the world. Every aspect of their performance is perfection, wonderfully musical and gorgeous to listen to.
In my opinion everybody should have a copy of this recording.......1999-07-14
The latest addition to the Harmonia Mundi Baroque collection is a splendid disk by the sadly under-performed English composer John Blow. Blow was ten years older than Purcell, who was not only his pupil and assistant organist, but also a friend with whom he exchanged early drafts of his scores and musical ideas. Venus and Adonis was written at the same time as the Purcell's, now more well-known, Dido and Aeneas; both works were written in response to King Charles II desire to imitate the music of the king of France, Louis XIV. In this recording, René Jacobs directs the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment led by, in my view, one of the best Baroque violin specialists today, Catherine Mackintosh. As is usual with this orchestra, the string sound in this recording is faultless throughout, with the two recorders and bassoon adding occasional colour in phrases and passages - such as the "Tune for Flutes" at the start of Act I. The title roles are sung by Rosemary Joshua and Gerald Finley respectively, and with their "Venus! Adonis!" routine at the beginning of Act I we are reminded how wonderfully affected the music of the English court was at this time. But Venus and Adonis do not appear until Act I which is almost eleven minutes into the fifty minute masque; before that, we hear the Prologue. The prologue, which does not exist in Purcell's Dido according to the informative programme notes, is dominated by Cupid who, in this recording is sung by counter-tenor Robin Blaze. The clarity, and rare musicality of Robin Blaze's performance are a delight to even the most unenlightened listener; note particular the remarkable "Cupid's Lesson" in act II, starring "Cupid and the little Cupids" - perhaps Blow's answer to seventeenth century "Spice Girls"? The story is simple and the music easily digestible, but then again, Charles's court was not known for its love of long stage works. There is no coupling on this disc, which runs for 51 minutes. If I had to fault this recording it would not be for the musicality which is consistent throughout, from performers to instrumentalists to the recording engineers; it would be for the lack of information about the performers. We know who they are, and what they look like because there are photos of them all on the back inside cover. Sadly this is a common ommission found in many Harmonia Mundi recordings because there appears to be an assumption that the recording will be bought only by the aficionados. In my opinion everybody should have a copy of this recording, not just the experts so come on Harmonia Mundi, tell us some more about your artists because they really do deserve it.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderfully complete overview of Baroque secular music!.......2002-04-22
I picked this up in a bargain bin for a song and counted my blessings! I am a Baroque music fiend, with a large collection of Harmonia Mundi discs, but up until now I hadn't purchased any HM box sets. Many of my favourite Harmonia Mundi artists are featured on the five discs: Andreas Scholl, Alfred Deller, Dominique Visse, Rene Jacobs, Bernarda Fink, and Jennifer Larmore. Each disc covers a different theme: The Madrigal (disc one), The Birth of the Opera (disc two), England in the 17th Century, featuring works by Byrd, Dowland, Blow, and Purcell (disc three), A Century of French Opera, which showcases works by Lully, Charpentier, and Rameau (disc four), and The Reign of the Opera Seria, with contributions from Vivaldi, Handel, and Graun (disc five). The only thing I would have wished for would have been more opera selections from Handel (Rodelinda or Rinaldo for example). This is an excellent, very complete overview of the rise and evolution of Baroque secular music (the liner notes are very complete and deserve an A+). Harmonia Mundi has also released two additional "Pathways of the Baroque" box sets, one of instrumental music and one of Baroque religious music. If you are a Baroque fan like myself and you have the time and money, buy all three. It is a worthy investment, and the box sets offer a wide selection of artists, styles, and composers.

Customer Reviews:
Too beautiful for words.......2004-05-25
If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.
Guitar History.......2004-02-15
Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !
Best deal there is!.......2002-05-06
If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.
Most excellent.......2001-08-18
This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.
Julian Bream, The Genius.......1999-01-09
Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!

Western music is often regarded as growing out of the rich heritage of Catholic and, later, Protestant church music. Yet for all the glories of early religious chant and song, secular music ran in parallel, usually having more freedom of expression and inspiring unfettered flights of musical fancy for their own sake. A History of Baroque Music: Secular Music is a companion to an equally impressive anthology of instrumental music, the two sets together exploring the development of the baroque as music broke ever further away from the previously all-pervasive control of the Church.
Over five discs and 6-1/2 hours we explore the madrigal, the birth of the opera, and its progress to a pinnacle of refinement with Handel's Giulio Cesare and Ariodante and Vivaldi's L'Incoronazione di Dario. The talents on offer are a Who's Who of Early Music, including Les Arts Florissants, La Chapelle Royal, Alfred Deller, Emilyvan Evera, the Hilliard Ensemble, Andreas Scholl, Stephen Varcoe, and many other fine performers. Twenty-two pages of notes place everything in historical context as we go from the Italy of Gesualdo and Monteverdi through the England of Dowland and Blow and the operas of Purcell (King Arthur and The Fairy Queen) to the France of Charpentier and Lully and so end in Germany with Gruan's Cleopatra e Cesare. It is a magnificent journey, wonderfully described by this impeccably assembled anthology, which is quite simply a treasure-trove of great music. --Gary S. Dalkin
