La Belle et la Betê [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
This is an extraordinary retelling of the classic story "The Beauty and the Beast", this time based on the Jean Cocteau film La Belle et la Bete. Philip Glass, one of our reigning minimalists, studied under Darius Milhaud and Nadia Boulanger in Paris and his music has always had a quiet Debussy-like character to it. What is amazing is that Glass is one of the minimalists who have made a successful transition into opera (John Adams is the other). And catch the scary silent-movie-house organ! This is a superlative recording of a clear masterpiece. Highly recommended. --Paul Cook

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The Sexiest Soundtrack of 2003 and 2004!.......2006-07-30
Great score, for it has the French charm score in it. The score and the music makes you think of France and it makes you wonder how it is like (if you have never been there) and I haven't been to France, but this soundtrack boosted my idea of wanting to go to France. Richard Robbins made a clear and focused score that reflects Paris, France. This is great music to listen to if you're just strolling the cobblestone streets of a village and simply to just relax to. This is recommended!

The best of its kind--and at budget price!.......2001-08-24
Naxos has done it again! After beginning several new series--the lives of famous composers, introductions to operas, Shakespeare plays--they are now offering one called "Classics Explained." In the first three entries, one long or two shorter works are analyzed, practically bar by bar, on two CDs by writer and narrator Jeremy Siepmann; and from what I have heard, this is going to be the most perfect effort along these lines yet--and with a budget price, something not to be passed up. Each CD set is accompanied by a thick booklet that is divided into 15 sections: The Composer and the Work, A Biographical Sketch, Place and Importance, The Work's Reception, an Essay, the Track List, an extremely detailed analysis (all the words of which are given in the text), Challenges to the Interpreter, Structural Overview, Ways of Listening, What Music Is, What Music Isn't, Guide to the Composer's Tools, The Basic Forms of Music, and a Glossary. Obviously, some of these chapters will be the same from set to set, others specific to the work at hand. The only extra step this can go--and I have suggested this to Naxos--is to make videos of the orchestra actually playing the selections. Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" (8.558028-29) spends a good deal of time on the Spring section to show how truly complex this simple-sounding movement is, and then gives a slightly quicker overview of Winter, Fall and Summer. In Brahms' "Piano Concerto No. 2" (8.558030-31), the first CD is devoted to the first 2 movements, the second to the last 2. Finally in the Ravel set, the first CD analyzes "Bolero" and the second "Ma Mere l'Oye." In all cases, each analysis is followed by an uninterrupted playing of the entire movement or section. The music is, of course, drawn from Naxos' endless line of its own recordings. And, do not fear, the explanations are quite non-technical for the most part, and the glossary will help when the inevitable technical term (always explained by the narrator) is used. Grab them all.

A Rare Treat.......2007-06-14
I searched for this album for 30 years -- and it didn't even exist yet! But I finally found it, and I count it as one of my very favorites. It works both as a soundtrack and a classical suite. In turns it's haunting, romantic, heartbreaking, playful, transcendent, and triumphant. You'll like it even if you haven't seen Cocteau's film -- and if you have seen it, hearing this music will evoke wonderful memories.
One of the Great Film Scores in a Splendid New Recording.......2005-02-23
This is a reissue at budget price of a glorious recording of this score done for Marco Polo ten years or so ago. Georges Auric (1899-1983) was one of 'Les Six' and is usually considered as one of the lesser of them. Part of the reason for this, I suspect, is that he turned to composing film scores--he wrote scores for 40 French, 40 American, and 15 British films--rather than concentrating primarily on concert works. But this score, for one of the most famous films in history -- Jean Cocteau's 'La Belle et la Bête' ('Beauty and the Beast') which starred Josette Day as Beauty and introduced Jean Marais as Beast/Prince -- is a masterpiece, plain and simple. I've always hoped that the score might be adapted as a ballet, which might give it greater currency. But Auric's score was lost, only to be found in the early 1990s by the present conductor (and film score maven), the single-named Adriano. Some music that had been cut from the film is recorded here, but basically this is what one hears when viewing the film. In the film it was conducted beautifully by the great Roger Desormière but the film's sound, from 1946, is nothing compared to this current performance in modern sound. We are indeed fortunate to have a modern recording of this lushly romantic music.
The score, running about an hour, contains twenty-four musical cues. Auric's style, a kind of romantic impressionism, is based largely on that of the Impressionists, mostly Ravel. His use of wordless chorus (both open- and closed-mouthed) is reminiscent of the latter's 'Daphnis et Chloë,' but there are also Debussyan spots, as in 'Les couloirs mystérieux' ('Mysterious corridors') with its blurry harmonies. Auric's orchestration is among the most brilliant and inventive in all of film music history. Some cues are scored like chamber music (e.g., 'Dans la chambre à coucher' ['In the bedroom'] or 'L'attente' ['Waiting']) for reduced strings without double basses. Others are brilliantly scored for large orchestra, including a multitude of tuned percussion (glockenspiel, vibraphone, xylophone, celesta, piano). A real tour de force.
In an act of misbegotten homage, Philip Glass composed an opera to run WITH the film, with the sound turned off (which, of course, meant that not only Josette Day's and Jean Marais's distinctive voices went unheard, but Auric's score was muted). It is SO nice to have a modern recording of the music that really goes with the film. Needless to say, Adriano and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra do a marvelous job.
In case you couldn't tell by now, this is a rave recommendation for both the music and the recording.

OK for late Glass.......2005-03-12
I saw this work performed live in Chicago years ago, and bought the CD. I was lukewarm.
I've long been a fanatic, mesmerized by the early Glass recordings, up through "Akhnaten" (and I saw the Ensemble live in concert a few times, and I even saw "Einstein on the Beach" live), but I never got so turned on by his subsequent works.
Probably "La Belle" is one of the best of his later works. Maybe I'll eventually be able to get more into them in a few years.
Buy the DVD Not the CD... Here's why.......2005-03-10
I bought the CD as soon as it came out about ten years ago. One day when I was sick at home (before computers demanded we work during sick days), I pulled out an old VHS tape of La Belle et la Bete and the new CD and attempted to play them with a tolerable degree of syncronicity.
It was quite a challenge at times, but the magic of the original film is captured so incredibly well in the music I wished that Glass had procured the rights to sell the film with his alternate soundtrack. In fact, according to a Terry Gross interview on Fresh Air, it took some effort to persuade the Cocteau heirs to allow Glasss to just do a few live performances (opera singers and the silenced film together).
I just found out today that the combined product has existed for a couple of years and it is already in my shopping cart.
I can't wait!
Extraordinary music, but get the DVD movie, not the CD.......2003-11-27
I agree with previous reviewers that this represents Philip Glass at his very best, but I want to warn potential buyers that there is a much better way to get the work, and that is by buying The Criterion Collection 2002 DVD version of the Jean Cocteau BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (the 1998 version does not contain the Glass work). That disc contains not only the fully restored film but contains as an alternative soundtrack the Philip Glass opera. Since Philip Glass originally composed the opera as a mixed media presentation of opera to accompany that film, this is unquestionably the preferred format. Seeing the movie while listening to the opera brings home the enormity of Glass's achievement. Incredibly, his music creates a second great film, one that stands as a monument to the genius of the original film. Moreover, Glass's composition perfectly complements the film, meshing with it completely in mood and tone.
Philip Glass is unquestionably one of the most interesting and least consistent musical talents in the world today. He is capable of being repetitious and boring, but he is equally capable of producing something profound and sublime. Perhaps because he was composing a piece to mesh with another work, limitation in this case inspired him to be more creative than usual. The music consistently attempts to mimic the organs that once provided the musical background for silent films in the Golden Age of cinema, and does so magnificently.
So, while I can't recommend the musical work highly enough, I do strongly recommend getting it in the 2002 Criterion DVD version. On top of the advantage of getting the film and a ton of extras, the two sets cost about the same, so there is no financial disadvantage to getting the DVD.
Glass' Lifetime Masterwork.......2002-04-23
.
After being disappointed by Glass's Dracula, I passed this work up for too long. Imagine my horror when I discovered that this is the composer's career masterwork. LBeLB is more than movie music. It's more than an opera, although it makes a better opera than any previous Glass work in that category. This piece is nothing less than the composer's retrospective on his own life and work.
If it weren't for his trademark appegiation and instrumentation, a listener might not believe this is the same Philip Glass who wrote those repetitive, minimalistic works of the 70s and 80s. This Philip Glass uses his now-traditional forms to create an intensely, tragically romantic atmosphere whose haunting melodies will stay with you for a lifetime.
As a devotee of the ultraromantics, this work drew me in much faster than any other Glass work. The rich harmonies, pulsing chords and soaring lines are just as satisfying as Chopin, Rachmaninoff or Ravel, while achieving a dynamic power that would impress Liszt or Wagner. In "The Beast's Anguish," noone can listen to intense trebel lines, counterpointed melodies, oceanic bass and piercing electrified flute and remain unmoved.
In decades hence, when Glass is seen as the Beethoven of the late 20th Century, students will mine this piece for musical symbolism that adds multiple layers on the original story. In the jacket notes, Glass observes that Cocteau's movie was a self-portrait of an artist betrayed by his times. Students of composer will find that he reprises much of his own previous work, bringing forth previous leitmotivs and juxtaposing them to tell his own story on top of Cocoteau's interpretation of the ancient fairy tale.
Not since Mishima has Glass seemed so perfectly married to his subject. Obviously Glass identifies personally with the subject. The frequency and stridency of his detractors from all musical camps can't but hurt his soul, even if he secretly hopes that once he's safely dead those same critics will begin industriiously studying and revering his works. This work is his portrayal of the essential tragedy in any artist's life.
Regardless of whether you're new to Philip Glass, or long-standing student of his work, this is his life's masterwork. You owe it to both him and yourself let his musical world wash through yours.
- Arnold Hendrick, 2002
A Stunner.......2002-02-05
I used to complain that Glass hasn't composed anything of worth since Koyanisquatsi or the Photographer, but I stand corrected. I've just seen this piece performed in Gainseville, Fla. Breathtaking. The sung vocal in french , set against the vibretto of violins and organs is haunting. (Plus if you're lucky enough to see the piece, the use of sung french against english subtitles is humorous.)

Giulini: A True Legend.......2006-01-20
EMI has produced so many new classical lines in the past couple of years that it's hard to keep track of them all, but one that has flown surprisingly under the radar is the "Legend" series. These sets feature one CD and one DVD by some of EMI's leading artists of the past fifty years. The title that initially intrigued me was David Oistrakh's because it featured his previously out-of-print recording of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with conductor Andre Cluytens. Then after going through the lineup of initial "Legend" offerings, I discovered a few others that I felt were worth getting, and the Carlo Maria Giulini title was one of them.
The CD features the conductor's late 1950s recordings of Franck's Symphony in D minor and "Psyche et Eros" Poeme Symphonique, Bizet's "Jeux d'enfants" Suite, and Ravel's "Ma Mere l'oye" Suite, all with the incomparable Philharmonia Orchestra. These performances have been previously available -- both Francks featured on Giulini's title in the old "Artist Profile" series, and the Bizet recently appeared on his volume in the "Great Conductors of the Century" series (see my review). This was my first encounter with this account of the Ravel, but I believe it has had a prior issue as well. All of these recordings are captured in brilliant golden age stereo and have to be counted among the best performances of the works ever made.
The DVD contains two selections from "Carlo Maria Giulini" (EMI 4 90114 9 6/5) -- a 1968 performance of Verdi's "Les Vepres Siciliennes" Overture and a 1964 performance of Falla's "El Sombrero de Tres Picos" Suite No. 2, both filmed at Fairfield Hall in Croydon with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. These are priceless historical documents, especially for those of us too young to have witnessed the great players of the past in person. In all, this is a first rate tribute to a true legend.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasant but forgettable CD!.......2001-04-13
Very little of this music is memorable. Auric's composing sounds very generic---void of anything suggesting a musical identity. Where were Honegger, Herrmann, and Rozsa? The performance doesn't help either---very bland!
Resistance is futile--you must have this CD!.......1999-05-17
Getting right to the numbers. On a scale of five and rounding up, I'd rate the CD at 4-1/2 stars (five because it's the only modern recording of this marvelous film score; four for performance; and four for sound quality). The music conjures up in the mind's eye scenes from what is one of the most stunning films of the post-war 40's and, very likely, of all time. For sure, it's Jean Cocteau's finest cinematic poem. Like the film, the score as performed here seems magical, light as a souffle, haunting, emotional, and delicately beautiful--clearly, a tour de force for your ears! For film enthusiasts who love the film (like myself), your life will never be complete until you have this CD! For those who love films, but have not yet seen Cocteau's masterpiece, you might as well get the CD now because this task will go straight to the top of your "Things I Gotta Do Today" list immediately after you've seen the film. And for those who are familiar with Mr. Auric's scores (say, from Cocteau's The Blood of a Poet (1930) or William Wyler's Roman Holiday (1953)) or are just casual listeners to film music, you will not be disappointed by this recording.
Great music on its own terms.......1999-02-22
This very well might be the greatest cinematic score of them all. All the magic of Cocteau's visual elements is more than matched by the magic of this music. Even if I had no idea what was supposed to be happening on the screen during each musical segment, I would still play this CD over and over. But knowing the film as I do, my enjoyment is increased many times over. Since most copies of the film have somewhat poor sound-tracks, I am extremely grateful to Marco Polo for making this studio recreation available. And in case you are wondering about THAT OTHER recording, the Philip Glass score does not even come close! It is amusing on its own terms, but the Auric score is great music on ITS own terms. See if you can spot the influences on this composer. (Hint: listen to Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloe"!)

Be careful!!! Requires an SACD player........2006-11-30
Note: this product will NOT play on standard CD players. Unlike other SACD disks I have purchased, it requires SACD hardware and cannot be played on ordinary CD systems.
I gave it one star only because I cannot play it. The performance may be terrific, but I haven't heard it.
Guess I should have read the description more carefully.

The best-known soundtracks of composer Philip Glass have stood the test of time extremely well. Today, we associate Koyaanisqatsi as much with Glass's vast soundscape as we do with director Godfrey Reggio's haunting images. Philip on Film gathers three complete Glass scores--Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Dracula, along with selections from La Belle et la Bête, Anima Mundi, Kundun, Mishima, The Secret Agent, The Thin Blue Line, and a handful of short films.
The Glass trademarks--those machinelike arpeggios; that familiar, if odd, electronic keyboard sound; the influence of non-Western vocal techniques--are all here. Glass has forged his own unmistakable style of epic-sounding minimalism, but it never gets stale. A few unreleased tracks on Philip on Film will serve hardcore Glass fans (who probably already own most of these works), including "Facades" from Godfrey Reggio's Evidence and a track each from Atom Egoyan's Diaspora and Peter Greenaway's The Man in the Bath. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
SEVERELY ALTERED "Belle et la Bete".......2005-12-22
...which is uncalled for. IT IS SPED UP from its original recording, making some of the high notes hit by the female singers truly chipmunk-like. I can't believe they would release this...let's speed it up to fit it on ONE disk! What a GOOD idea. No. Not a good idea.
Reviewers are not looking at this correctly.......2003-04-03
John Adams and Steve Reich were first introduced to me in detail through their respective Nonesuch 10-disc re-releases of previous material. These box sets were never intended to be some new experience for the seasoned Adams and Reich fans, but were instead created either to introduce these artists to those of us who hadn't previously heard their works or to serve as a nicely packaged collector's item.
Like both of the aforementioned box sets, the Philip on Film box set contains complete selections of a few recordings, some new material, and some other works stripped down (either by editing the tracks or by including a few complete tracks from each work). While this package could have easily been ten discs long, evidently Nonesuch was only interested in including those recordings which were featured on the Philip on Film Tour.
I encourage any new Glass listener to purchase this great set: it served as a superb intro to his works for me, as did the Adams and Reich sets.
A re-approach.......2001-12-10
Everyone who thinks of this as purely a repackaged box set doesn't fully understand the nature of this set. In the introduction, Philip Glass mentions that most of the works represented is from a series of concerts where the music is interpreted live while the movie is presented on a screen behind the performers. I personally attented these performances in Austin, TX and was very pleased with the results. The first night consisted of the Shorts, or the 5th disc of this set. The Man in the Bath, Passages, Evidence (Facades with synth), Diaspora, and Anima Mundi where all performed live by The Philip Glass ensemble with the movie itself in the background. The following 4 performances where of Powaqqasti, Le Belle et La Bete, Dracula, and Koyaanisqatsi. Seeing these films with the music has shed a new light on these scores for me, because I had previously heard almost all of them, but to the recording at hand.
This set of discs is something you might pick up at a live concert of your favorite local band, representing what they played that night in studio recording. This set of discs was released to accompany Philip's current world tour of Philip On Film. Although almost all of it has been released previously, this isn't just a way to make a "quick buck". This is a great way to get most of the music played at these performances and, most of all, is a bargin way to get a lot of his best music to date. I also don't personally agree with the "highlights" idea with Belle and Mundi, but to a person wanting post-Einstein Glass, this is a good way to start. Also, I would think that anyone who believes that Glass has written the same music since Einstein needs to listen more and generalize less because there is a wealth of music out there that you may not realize exists.
The Worst of Phil?.......2001-10-30
Anyone who thinks that Powaqqatsi is "the worst of Phil" needs to have his head examined.
More of the same.......2001-10-17
Okay, I give up! The world (or at least the music industry) wants to keep Philip Glass's star in ascendance, with new commissions, and new recordings, or expensive repackagings of previously issued recordings. Glass hasn't had a new idea since 1976, when his "Einstein on the Beach" was the freshest new sound imaginable. Basically, all he's done is re-write that work over and over (and over!) again ever since. While there are cool parts to some of these scores, most of this is the same arpeggiated chords he's been using for the last 25 years! Somebody wake me up when this guy gets a new idea!
