Pavel Haas/Hans Krása: String Quartets
Editorial Reviews

The Hawthorne String Quartet, members of the Boston Symphony, has made a specialty of reviving music by Holocaust composers. This disc, in London's Degenerate Music series (music by composers suppressed, rejected, or killed by the Nazis) offers two string quartets by Haas, a highly talented student of Leos Janá ek, whose music Haas's resembles noticeably. Both works are fascinating. The String Quartet by Krása is earlier (1921) and less adventurous than Haas's, but it's still an attractive piece and fills out a fascinating collection. --Leslie Gerber
