The Chicago Recordings

Editorial Reviews

The recordings that Giulini made with the Chicago Symphony between 1969 and 1976 document an extraordinary partnership and remain among the finest of the conductor's career. Giulini's Mahler First is more lyric than most, yet with enough energy to satisfy Mahlerians; the last movement a tribute to the conductor's unerring sense of orchestral balances even in crushing climaxes. His rendition of the orchestral movements of Berlioz's "dramatic symphony" Romeo and Juliet excels in its poetry, the warmly caressing Chicago strings in the Love Scene irresistible. The Beethoven Seventh is an eloquent blend of the Dionysian and Apollonian approaches to this "dance symphony," with glowing horns, driving rhythms and lovely solo turns. Giulini's later remakes of the Beethoven and other works in the set often were soporific; here, he's on target. This Bruckner Ninth, for example, is grandly rhetorical but full of passion. The Brahms Fourth is a highly personal account, with a ravishing slow movement, while the Stravinsky ballet suites reveal the Chicagoans at their most refined; the Firebird exquisitely colored, Petrushka, amazingly precise. Classic recordings, well transferred; a bargain that shouldn't be missed. --Dan Davis

"Chicago's plot was cynical and satirical in 1975, but today feels like a documentary." So says Walter Bobbie, the director responsible for this revival of the Kander, Ebb, and Fosse "musical vaudeville," which began as a minimalist concert staging for New York City Center's Encore! series before moving on to Broadway, critical acclaim, and Tony Awards. Actually, it'd be hard to go wrong with any production, no matter how it's staged, because the Roaring '20s jazz-based music here is simply great. Some people actually prefer the original's Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma to Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth, but no matter. Joel Grey is perfect as Amos Hart, James Naughton matches Jerry Orbach's original Billy Flynn, and again, the music here is wonderful. A near-flawless classic. --Bill Holdship

Makes the enjoyment of the show continue after you leave the theater. Definitely see the show before you by the soundtrack.

Chicago - The Musical (1996 Broadway Revival Cast)

One of the top 10 best Broadway cast albums ever! A revival which surpasses the original. A must own for anyone who likes Broadway shows. Bebe Neuworth, Ann Reinking & James Naughton are stellar. Plenty of razzle dazzle and fun.

4 out of 5 stars A near-perfect recording.......2006-02-25

Chicago is a classic, and that classic status remains in the revival recording. Bebe Neurwith is truly a delight as Velma Kelly, and shines in the star number of "All That Jazz", but it's the men who steal the show. James Naughten and Joel Grey are perfect as Billy Flynn and Amos Hart. Every single one their numbers is absolutely perfect are true classics. There are, however, two downsides. First is that the film soundtrack exceeds vocally with Catherine Zeta-Jones as a belting Velma. Second, and ultimately, Anne Reinking's rendition of "Roxie" is downright awful. I love her versions of "Funney Honey" and "Me and My Baby", but "Roxie" is disgusting. In all, however, a wonderful, fun, and classic recording.

4 out of 5 stars Don't be so harsh on Ann.......2006-01-06

I understand that many of you who have bought this CD will be Broadway lovers (and I am one myself)and you will be used to the lead roles having amazing powerful voices. But just as important as good singing is good acting. I think that Ann interpreted Roxie as a wannabe who had the enthusiasm but lacked the talent, which makes her raspy tones and sing-speak completely plausible. It also supports the theme that you can use other things than talent to get yourself to the top This may not be the way you like Roxie played, but you shouldn't shun Ann's interpretation. It's a good thing if there is more than one way of having a character played, I think so anyway.
Personally I love the Miramax film, but I enjoy comparing these 2 and seeing the differences.

2 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great. .......2005-08-27

The revival edition of CHICAGO could be a whole lot better (like the original or the movie soundtrack.) But it is good none the less.
Bebe Nuewirth is fun to listen to on the recording, but Ann Reinking is HORRIBLE! She can't sing and she can't act as well as Ms. Nuewirth.
I recomend this recording to all Chicago and Kander and Ebb fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For The New To The Blues Or The Establihed Fan.......2007-01-14

Having watched this series on PBS, I knew what I was getting when I made this purchase. For anyone new to the blues and wanting a good starter disc for a well rounded taste, this disc is a must have. It affords the listener a sampling of the evolution of the blues sound, beginning with the founders right up to today. For the established blues fan, it's a nice addition to their collection. A great disc for travelling.

5 out of 5 stars A true gift to Humanity..........2006-10-28

Big thanks to the "gods" in heaven and other places were they maybe hangin' out, for gaving Mr. Martin Scorsese the vision and the tools to bring together the past, the present and the future of the history of the Blues music...so every man or woman will not have any excuse not to know that "the blues is the roots and everything else is the fruits...," according to (Willie Dixon)... In short, thank you Martin Scorsese! Exhilarating to say the least!

2 out of 5 stars Poor Blues Collection.......2006-09-14

As a long time Blues player, I was very disappointed with this set from two perspectives: poor quality recordings on the CD itself (I expected a better digitally mastered sound, and the imprinted sound volume was sorta lower than normal) and the actual collection of selected songs (not overly representative of the best Blues by these artists or Blues in general). I had seen part of it on PBS TV and bought the collection w/o first listening to it. So after spending the big bucks for it, I was sorely disappointed and do NOT recommend it for anyone serious about the Blues. It's just an okay set. There are many other higher quality collections online. Check them out first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blues Compilation!.......2004-03-27

This is a seriously excellent sampler of blues. It gives a great introduction to the genre for those that are either new to the blues or are interested to expand their knowledge of the classics. Of course, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix make their way onto this CD. BB King and John Lee Hooker are on it, as they should be. I was disappointed not to find a single song by Albert King - I think he made a serious contribution to the blues. Otherwise, it's an interesting and mostly quite a worthy selection.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Otis Collection.......2007-04-05

This compilation has lots of Otis Rush's best early material, and while it predates his classic "So Many Roads," it is still an excellent collection of his music.

I Can't Quit You Baby, Three Times A Fool, Groaning The Blues, and many others remind you why he's been such an influential guitarist, and why people like Eric Clapton love him work.

This is a collection worth owning for the blues guitar fan.

4 out of 5 stars Music good, sound ok.......2007-01-07

There are some very nice tunes on here with great riffs and licks to learn if youre a guitarist. You can tell Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton ate this stuff up! Unfortunately, his vocals are often distorted. Seems as if no one else really seems to matter, so take my review with a grain of salt.

These recordings were made 50 years ago and dont sound bad by any means, but thats why it got 4 stars only. I realize they may not have had too many resources to use recourding these tracks back in 1956, but this was probably the fault of the engineer. Distorted guitar can work if thats what youre going for, but when the vocals are distorting then its time to turn down the level! Otis Rush sounds great here though...I cant recommend something else that sounds better - so go ahead and pick this up. Dont expect super high fidelity though.

5 out of 5 stars Every review here is 5 stars .......2004-08-11

because this is as good as it gets for blues singing, guitar playing and songwriting not necessarily in any order --- Otis Rush is as great a blues artist as any other in the history of the genre

5 out of 5 stars Blues at it's best.......2004-06-17

Excellent compilation and a great collection of songs recorded under the limited enviroment that Eli Toscano's Cobra Studio had, but all these songs stand by themselves. Every time I hear Otis or Freddie King I can hear Eric Clapton, it's clear he got influenced by this great musician. I can't quit you baby, a song written by Willie Dixon (who plays almost all the bass parts) later covered by Led Zeppelin and All your love later covered by the same Eric Clapton with John Mayall and also Aerosmith payed tribute this song later on.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2003-11-29

A criminally underrated performer, southpaw guitarist Otis Rush broke into the R&B top 10 on his first attempt with the great slow blues "I Can't Quit You Baby".

That song was penned by Willie Dixon, as are several of these late-50s singles which Rush recorded for Eli Toscano's Cobra label, but Rush was a more than able composer himself, and he is the man behind some of the best songs on this CD, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Three Times A Fool" and "Keep On Loving Me Baby"; superb, sophisticated blues tunes which often eclipse Dixon's.

Otis Rush' brand of blues is less rough and boisterous than the music of Howlin' Wolf, but not as polished as that of B.B. King, and he was a major source of inspiration to Stevie Ray Vaughan, who named his band after Rush's song "Double Trouble", and did a great rendition of "All Your Love".
His intense vocals and stinging lead guitar playing is reminicent of Buddy Guy and Magic Sam, and if talent was everything and luck and timing never mattered, Otis Rush would currently be hailed as the reigning king of Chicago blues.

Alternating between smouldering slow blues and swinging up-tempo numbers, this is one of the truly essential albums in any blues collection. If Rush had never recorded another note, his reputation would be intact based solely on these eight singles.

5 out of 5 stars The Best CHICAGO version There is!! Great Fun to listen To!!.......2005-12-09

There are lots of CHICAGO records. But the original has to be the best. Gwen Verdon is loads of fun to listen to on this cd. Especially in the songs "Funny Hunny" and "Roxie". And nobody can sing "All That Jazz" as good as Chita Rivera does. Chita is also good in the songs "I Can't Do It Alone" and "When Velma Takes The Stand" and "Class".
I recomend this cd to any CHICAGO fans and anyone who loves Broadway Cast Recordings!

2 out of 5 stars Poor.......2005-08-12

With all of the productions of Chicago that have been and gone in this world, there are few that could be as forgettable as this recording.

With a seemingly excellent cast upon first view, I expected so much more from this early recording. Rivera's powerful yet run-of-the-mill performance is one of very few good things here, after all, anything could out-shine Verdon's elderly performance in which every note she manages to warble sounds like it'll be her last. Some say her performance was meant to be "over-the-hill", however, to me, it sounds like she passed the hill many miles back.

Chicago has never, to me, been a show of much calibre but this recording is probably one of the very worst in existence. Upon first listening you might think... "Oh, `tis not that bad, I don't know what he's talking about", but, when played alongside more recent recordings you will see what I mean. This recording is great if you're a fan of Chita Rivera as you can tell she is trying hard, and, although I think she doesn't suit this role entirely, does a creditable job. Verdon on the other hand... a big mistake.

The basic foundations of the what I think of this recording being laid out, I must say that I did enjoy Orbach's performance as Billy Flynn. He seems to master the role with confidence and his clear voice is perfect for "All I Care About".

Look elsewhere if you're a newcomer to the show but buy if you like Chita Rivera!

4 out of 5 stars Before Its Time!.......2005-07-24

Living in the shadows of that season's deserved blockbuster, "A Chorus Line", "Chicago" lived in relative obscurity.
Despite its fantastic leads, Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon and Jerry Orbach, "Chicago" was probably ahead of its time. Fortunately, the excellent 1996 Revival exposed the masses to this Kander/Ebb masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars American Black Humor At Its Theatrical Best.......2005-03-29

Ah, Chicago, why did the Tony awards go to A Chorus Line instead? As the old saying goes, "You was robbed!" No doubt the general public took more easily to the other musical's lighter tone and more acceptable storyline about struggling musical performers. But Chicago was the better show, in terms of songs, dancing and talented leads. It's just that the humor was so dark . . . and wonderful. Adapted from an old story by the writing team of John Kander and Fred Ebbs, and placed in the capable hands of the great Bob Fosse, this musical took a turn to the dark side when its director/choreographer nearly died of a heart attack partway through its composition. When Fosse recovered, he altered its tone and changed it into one of the finest pieces of theatrical black comedy, right up there with Sweeney Todd. In Chicago, the American legal system is reduced to who screws who, to a showcase where there are stars du jour, each fading as quickly as she enters the limelight of public sympathy. As the great Jerry Orbach says at the start of Razzle Dazzle, "It's all show biz, kid." From start to finish, this musical takes the audience on a tour of the Roaring 20's legal system, which bears an uncomfortable resemblance to our present-day one. But it's all served up with such style, such panache, that it's a real treat. Chita Rivera sizzles as the sultry Velma; Gwen Verdon is both tough and pitiful as Roxie, the hapless client of sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn. Flynn, of course, is the real villain or anti-hero of this show, the cynical cad who charms and manipulates the media to win acquittal for his guilty-as-sin clients. This role fell to the late great Jerry Orbach, who sank his big white teeth into the role and made it indelibly his own. (Along with El Gallo from The Fantasticks) The rest of the cast is excellent, too, from Christopher Chadman as Fred Casely to Cheryl Clark as Liz; everyone's great in his role and pulls the story along. The courtroom scene is our favorite part, especially when Orbach sings in a high-pitched voice for Verdon, who's perched on his knee like a ventriloquist's dummy, moving her mouth to his words as he sings We Both Reached For The Gun. Razzle Dazzle and All That Jazz are also standouts, but no song in this musical seems out of place; all fit in and are superbly done by this original cast. The CD is well-produced and sure to please. We highly recommend it for fans of black humor in American theater---enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars The start of something very special.........2004-08-08

The original cast recording of Chicago is very good. This is what started it all. Sometimes overloooked, but the Original Cast Recording for Chicago is something that shouldn't be missed.

Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera are the two leading ladies. Both are very good. No one can top Chita! She was absolutely amazing as Velma, and I wish we could've heard the complete score with Chita. Chita gives a soulful and sassy "All That Jazz", makes "The Cell Block Tango" shine with her monolouge, and gives a great "I Can't Do It Alone", and "When Velma Takes the Stand". Gwen Verdon is also quite good as the first Roxie ever. If it wasn't for Gwen there would be NO Chicago, because it was her idea to have a musical made about Roxie Hart. Her husband at the time the legend Bob Fosse wrote the amazing book for the show, directed the show, and lended his amazing choreography for the musical. Gwen doe's a fine job with "Funny Honey", "Roxie", and gives a beautiful ballad version of "Me and My Baby".
Jerry Orbach and the supporting cast also do a fine job. Jerry gives a good "All I Care About", and "We Both Reached for the Gun".

So, this cast recording shouldn't be missed, Chita will amaze you, and you won't be left dissapointed. Get some orginal Chicago!

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

4 out of 5 stars Toe Tapping music - but disappointing DVD!.......2007-02-08

Having misplaced my original CD, I saw this on Amazon and decided to buy it. I was particularly excited about the prospect of seeing some of the songs recorded from stage productions.

CD1 is the same as the Cast Recording that I purchased before.

CD2 was a bit of "fun". It was interesting to hear the songs that were cut from the "new" show and it's not a great leap of the imagination to see why they probably were. It was also interesting to hear other peoples renditions of various songs from the show. Especially people like Liza Minelli, Melanie Griffith and even Linda Carter (yes, our very own "Wonder Woman").......

While I love the show and the music of "Chicago", I have to say I was disappointed by the DVD in this set. The feature about the re-opening of Chicago, was informative, but would have been better if intersperced with clips from the show(s) or even rehersals. The section that I was most excited about, the stage numbers of "All That Jazz", "All I Care About" and "When You're Good To Mama", were not the entire numbers recorded from a stage production......nor were they in English! There were clips from various productions (Japan, Germany...and a few others) all edited together to give the viewer a brief "taste" of the song in different languages.

I would have been much happier with the 3 songs, recorded from the stage production, sung in their entirity, in English.

That is the only bad thing I have to say about this set.

Definitely a buy for huge "Chicago" fans only. For the more casual admirer, go and buy the original cast recording album.....you'll be just as happy!

5 out of 5 stars the new Razzle Dazzle.......2007-01-24

It is unfortunate that the previous reviewer (who disliked this boxed set so much he reviewed it twice) did not read the product description first to understand what he was buying. Yes, this celebration of the tenth anniversary of the revival of CHICAGO does include the original CD; those who own that disk and have only a casual interest in the show may not want to purchase this. But for less than twice the price of the single CD, this set offers a taste of the many stars who have done turns in this production since it opened (including the original 1975 production), both on Broadway and around the world, plus a DVD of interviews with those involved in the production, and a booklet full of other goodies. Perhaps no one NEEDS a version of "All That Jazz" in German, but what fun! If you can't distinguish Brooke Shield from Ann Reinking or Liza Minelli from Bebe Neuwirth, by all means don't buy this boxed set. But if you want to catch some of the razzle-dazzle you may have missed, enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars No Razzle Dazzle.......2007-01-11

I enjoyed both the revival production and the revival CD of Chicago. When they came up with the marketing ploy of a special 10th anniversary multi-disc set, this "Chicago" fan bought it even if the revival CD (which I already have) is part of the set. The various artist disc of famous stars who have starred in the production in the last 10-years did not offer anything exciting or interesting in their rendition other than their famous names. Worse, the documentary was not well presented and the clip from the show was actually just a teaser. It is so sad because Chicago is now the longest running revival in Broadway history and they have decided to put up a forgettable memorabilia that "Chicago" lovers will not treasure in the years to come. Such a waste. To ironically paraphrase a line in the show, there was simply "no razzle dazzle".

2 out of 5 stars redux.......2007-07-06

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

3 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

2 out of 5 stars POOR EXCUSE FOR SOME GOOD THEATER MUSIC.......2003-05-20

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

    Album Description

Presenting the 'holy grail' of 60s Chicago soul CDs - the first legitimate issue of the Complete OKeh Recordings of Billy Butler.

Although never a big name in the way that his elder brother Jerry has always been in chart circles, Billy Butler is considered by soul fans to be synonymous with quality and excellence, his small catalogue of recordings outranking those of artists of far greater fame. The fans have been waiting for this CD for years. It's wholly appropriate that now it's here, and it's on Kent UK.

As well as the A- and B-sides of all of Billy's OKeh 45s, and the rare version of 'Found True Love' that was originally issued by accident on the stereo version of Billy's "Right Track" album, our CD features all of the surviving alternate takes and unissued tracks - both vocal and instrumental - that Billy left behind when he left OKeh for Brunswick in late 1966.

Some of these tracks are also making their stereo debut, mixed down from original Columbia 3- and 4-track masters where such things have survived.

It also features six hitherto unissued masters and alternate takes, plus five instrumental backing tracks which feature Billy on rhythm guitar only, and which remained unfinished when Billy left OKeh for Brunswick in late 1966.

In the early days of Northern soul, Billy Butler's OKeh 45s were among the most cherished by the scene's pioneering collectors. Nearly 40 years later, it is the hallmark of quality that sets "The Right Tracks" apart from many other such collections.

    Amazon.com essential recording

This is a treasure trove--for the Muddy Waters fan, for the blues historian, for the country-blues enthusiast. Alan Lomax, searching for Robert Johnson (recently deceased), came through and recorded a young McKinley Morganfield. The rest is history. Early versions of future classics can be found on these field recordings from 1941-42, and the guitar and voice that would have unimaginable influence on blues and rock & roll. There's no Chicago yet in these often-scratchy recordings, but if you listen, you can hear where it came from. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable Early Work of a Blues Genius.......2006-10-01

This is where the legend of the one and only, tremendous Muddy Waters starts. Few people have ever impacted any artform as much as Muddy has American music. Though he is accompanied on some songs, Muddy is also solo on many and performs some future classics w/ just an acoustic and his powerful voice. When Muddy heard the playback after "Country Blues" he knew that he had what it took to be a blues professional... possibly the greatest that there ever was. If you've never heard Muddy play acoustic, you are in for a shock; I believe my jaw dropped to the floor when I heard the amazing, full-bodied, vibrant sound that he got out of just a guitar and his voice on songs such as the first cut and "I Be's Troubled" (later recorded as "I Can't Be Satisfied." This is indispensable and essential listening, not just some study in the roots of American music.

    4 out of 5 stars Muddy's Delta Blues.......2005-04-13

Most Blues fans have heard a lot of chicago blues. Most fans have a lot of Muddy Waters chicago blues. But not alot of Muddy Waters fans would have heard Muddy sing the delta blues. This CD is very intersting because it shows Muddy playing the first blues he ever heard, The Delta Blues. Much like the sounds of Son House, Robert Johnson and Skip JAmes this cd is all acoustic blues. It is great to be able to hear a very young Muddy sing delta blues because once he went to Chicago he abandoned the delta sound and went electric. Muddy does several Robert Johnson songs on this cd quite well, and there are some interesting interviews with Muddy explaining what life was like in the delta and why he made songs out of his experiences. For those who like the old delta blues this cd is a must have, on no other cd do we hear Muddy singing blues like these.

5 out of 5 stars Muddy's Real Real Folk Blues.......2004-01-16

When Muddy Waters made the first recordings here, he was 26 or 27 and had not been playing regularly. He didnt own a guitar and had to borrow Alan Lomax's Martin. You see here your basic Delta and Mississippi blues in full blossom, by a man who was a great player if he could sound like this when he wasn't in practice. People look at Mississippi blues with a distorted mind thinking of it only through the stream of Robert Johnson, when the music and the tradition was much broader.

In the interviews on this recording you can see how lame and ignorant at times the folklorists were, both white and black, Lomax and Work. But you also see a testament to Son House who taught Robert Johnson, Muddy, and a whole layer of bluesmen and who was such a great artist even in his revival 1960s that Muddy would make his band members keep quiet and play close attention when House performed with them at Newport and elsewhere.

However, you also see his roots beyond this. We get to hear a good string band performance with Muddy Playing with fiddler Son Sims and a mandolin player in a blues fiddle band that was typical of what was going on at the time. Muddy explains his decision to start playing music was inspired by Sims and the string band with Sims and the mandolin player was the band he performed with when he got work. Neither Waters nor the liner notes let you know that Waters also played mandolin, and that when Muddy was a teenager in the 1930s, his favorite blues group was the fiddle band The Mississippi Sheiks. Years later, Muddy would explain he walked all day just to hear the Sheiks.

Despite all this history, this is some good blues music to listen to,. More relaxed, and less intense, and of course less masterful than the Chess masterpieces Muddy began putting out in Chicago in the 1940s, but this is still a CD I put on my player with it set to keep replaying it because I want to hear it.

4 out of 5 stars Muddy Waters' first recordings.......2003-07-29

If your idea of what a Muddy Waters tune should sound like is the cut-and-shuffle of "Hoochie Coochie Man" or the hard-hitting "I've Got My Mojo Working", the music on this album may come as a surprise to you. This is strictly acoustic stuff, split between solo performances and recordings with the Son Simms Four string band, and the style (if not the voice) recalls Waters' self-professed mentor, the legendary Eddie "Son" House.

Stil, if you're interested in country blues, this is an important and interesting document, showcasing the great Muddy Waters before he truly found a style of his own. The 1941 recording of "I Be's Troubled" (later redubbed "I Can't Be Satisfied") shows signs of things to come, but most of what is on here owes a huge debt to Son House first and William "Big Bill" Broonzy second. Waters' heavy-handed slide guitar attack is strongly reminiscent of House, whom Waters mentions several times during the four interview snippets spread across the record.

According to legend, listening to himself on acetate for the first time made Muddy Waters believe in himself and his abilities as a recording artist ("I didn't know I sang like that!"), and he eventually made it north to Chicago where his re-working of "I Be's Troubled" became a major local hit in 1948).

Among the highlights on this album are the House-esque "Country Blues", "I Be's Troubled", and "Rosalie", which is a virtual blueprint for Waters' later approach. Also listen to "You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone" and the Charley Patton-like "You Got To Take Sick And Die Some Of These Days".

Again, this is NOT the kind of hard-rocking blues and deep grooves that made Muddy Waters the king of Chicago blues in the 50s (well, alongside Howlin' Wolf), but if you are interested in the developement of one of the most important post-war blues musicians, it is well worth picking up. And the music is good, too!

5 out of 5 stars The birth of a legend of the 20the century.......2002-05-24

Of course, this cd is essential.Even if there are some imperfections, even if the violin of Henry Sims on four tracks isn't very good.Muddy Waters' music is already here, with strong influences from Son House,Charley Patton,Willie Brown,Robert Johnson and even Blind Lemon Jefferson."Country blues" and "I be's troubled" are masterful solo pieces, recorded at Stovall's Plantation,August 1941."I be bound to write to you" will later be named "I can't be satisfied",and it features great slide playing."You got to take sick and die..." shows Muddy imitating (with great skill) the outstanding Blind Willie Johnson;you know, the guy who recorded "dark was the night, cold was the ground",one of the most extraordinary pieces in the history of american black music."Why don't you live..." is the same ."mean red spider" features a pianist that sounds like Sunnyland Slim."I'm gonna cut your head" is more in Big Maceo's mood, because of James Clark's piano playing;so are "atomic bomb blues" ,"tomorrow will be too late","Jitterbug blues","hard day blues","burryin' ground blues","come to me baby" and "you can't make the grade".It seems funny and strange to find Muddy playing the role of Tampa Red.However, there are great tunes, with great piano support;Muddy loved this kind of piano players, and some years later he will play with the immense Otis Spann (1930-1970),a "son" of Big Maceo. Finally, the terrific, outstanding, amazing, superb "rollin' and tumblin'",recorded in two parts, with Little Walter, harp, and Babyface Leroy Foster, dms and vcl. This tune became one of Muddy's anthems, and was first recorded by an obscure but very talented guy at the end of the twenties,Hambone Willie Newbern;this man recorded a few tracks, and died killed by cops who stroke him to death. You can find the "complete recorded works" of Willie Newbern on Document Records.Muddy's version of "rollin' and tumblin'" is one of the most ferocious things I ever heard;the very young Little Walter (Marion Jacobs,1930-1968),plays harp like mad here.A little bit more than five minutes of the greatest blues playing. If you're addicted to Muddy Waters' music, you have to discover this little known side of his music.

Like 1997's Grammy-winning new Broadway cast recording, this disc benefits from CD length by featuring music and dialogue cut from 1975's original Broadway cast recording. Plus, time's been very kind to the Kander and Ebb musical, which was initially critically panned for its decadent cynicism...but that was before O.J. Simpson and, in the words of Chicago's Roxy Hart (played by the terrific Ruthie Henshall here), murder became an art. Ute Lemper can't touch Chita Rivera's wonderfully sex-drenched original Velma Kelly, but, then, neither did Bebe Neuwirth in 1997--and still, "All That Jazz" remains one of the greatest opening numbers in musical-theater history. Everything else here is as fine as, if not better than, the U.S. recordings, and all 23 tracks are just good old-fashioned Broadway gems. --Bill Holdship

1 out of 5 stars Sadly... another recording "don't!".......2006-03-02

Contrary to all the other review on this page, I have to say that *yet again* a second, unnecessary cast album was punched out to make more record sales and proves my theory that these cash grabs are inferior. Say what you will about Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth -- their performances are stellar in the revival cast that can never be topped, not even by this shallow performance. Critics on this page would have you believe that these London Cast Members have better vocals than those of the Broadway Revival. However... we're talking about "Chicago": a tawdry tale of jazz, booze and sex with a little murder for good measure. The smoky elements of Ann's voice, and Bebe's, make the original cast recording more realistic than the more classical sound of the London Cast. Another flaw worth noting is the harsh accents of the London Cast -- a trait that plagues many UK recordings of shows that take place in the US. Normally, for shows like Les Miz and other classical pieces, I prefer the accents... but in this case, it's hard to get past the singers tripping over their tongues as if they're singing with a wad of gum in their mouthes.

Buy the Broadway Revival Cast. Ann Reinking was instrumental in bringing it to the stage. She choreographed the show and helped initiate the revival, she was trained by Bob Fosse... the REVIVAL cast was a long awaited feat and a piece of history in the making.

5 out of 5 stars Third of Four Great Recordings of the show.......2005-11-05

It's unique in recording history when four productions of a musical are staged (and/or filmed) and all four produce superb original cast/soundtrack albums. Such is the case with CHICAGO. The 1975 Original Cast, the 1996 New York Revival Cast, the 1998 London Revival Cast, and the film version all boast superb recordings with superb performances.

The length of the lp being what it was, the original cast recording is shorn of some numbers which are present on the revival cds.

Both revival recordings feature new recordings of the Entr'Acte, the song I Know A Girl, as well as the Hot Honey Rag. The NY revival adds a short reprise of I Can't Do It Alone, which the London revival does not. To counter this the London revival provides the short Act One Finale, which the NY revival does not. The London revival also adds the opening spoken soliloquy intro to Roxie, whereas neither the original cast nor the NY revival recorded this piece.

Of the two revivals the London revival comes out the strongest in my opinion. It has more spark, more dazzle. Lemper imitates Chita Rivera in a number of spots and Ruthie Henshall is vocally amazing (especially in her Roxie number) as she runs the gamut of her origial characterization.

Ann Reinking does an amazing job of totally mimicking Gwen Verdon's voice in the NY revival - why, I don't know - but it is amazing.

Buy the original cast but if you can only afford one of the revivals, make it the London cast.

4 out of 5 stars Great - the best we can expect.......2005-08-15

This recording of the 1997 London revival with the breathtaking musical greats Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper, has got to be the best we can expect from this show. With mainly supreme performances and a perfect big-band orchestra, this (if there has to be one) is the recording that Chicago should be remembered by once it has gone from the stage.

Henshall, playing the jealous and somewhat bitchy character Roxie, sparkles with the theatrical excellence that we always expect from this musical superstar. Her not so much `theatrically-veteran' (more like `well-seasoned') status adds that air of perfection that is unmatched by anyone else. Lemper, with her crisp voice and electric performance, takes on the song that everyone knows, "All That Jazz" with sizzle and great aplomb as the diva, Velma.

Goodman, with his confident personality and pretty great voice, is one of this recording's sadly overlooked hidden treasures. Whilst there have been better Billy Flynn's from an acting perspective, his singing is impeccable.

When compared to the nigh-on perfect performances from the leading ladies and supporting cast, the material slightly lets them down with predictable and, in some cases, blatantly over-jazzed musical spectacle. For example, the song "Cell Block Tango" is less of a revealing power-song than a simple method of conveying rather unexciting sensation. Having said that, some music is beautiful, "Class" being a gleaming example of Kander and Ebb's ballad-writing niche, sung by the butch character Mama Morton (this role being played with faultlessness by the powerful Meg Johnson). With good humour mixed with, in general, complex emotion and character, this is a fun show which appeals to many a theatregoer. Whilst I don't like the show in a musical sense, I have to applaud the effort with such a remarkable recording and production.

One for your collection, most definitely.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the best recording of the show.......2005-08-12

The excellent original cast album is sadly truncated, the longer Broadway revival album features performances that aren't as impressive off stage, and the soundtrack (like the movie) is missing much of the score.

This is not only the most complete reading of CHICAGO (including lots of dialogue, brief reprises, dance music and other odds and ends), but it's possibly the best performed overall. Ruthie Henshall seems at times to be channeling Judy Garland as Roxie; it's a shocking, thrilling, totally satisfying account of the role. Also excellent is the great jazz singer Ute Lemper, perhaps the most distinctive vocalist ever to take on Velma Kelly.

Henry Goodman has all the voice required for Billy Flynn and puts a wonderfully wry spin on the lyrics. Nigel Planer is the most obvious piece of casting of the leads as Amos, and curiously the least successful; even if he can't touch John C. Reilly, he's an improvement over Joel Grey. Meg Johnson snarls more than she sings, but that's absolutely fine for Mama Morton, and she's a riot.

The orchestra is marvelous and the tempi are kept brisk. Every minute of this album is compulsively listenable, which is important because it's such a long sucker. If you can only get one recording of this great score, this is definitely it.

4 out of 5 stars A great version of "Chicago". Henshall and Lemper shine!.......2004-08-06

The 1998 London version of the smash hit Broadway Musical Chicago, is quite a good album.

Ruthie Henshall and Ute Lemper are the two leading ladies. Both ladies are spectacular. Ruthie has an amazing voice, which definetly surpasses Ann Reinking's voice, but also Ann had some great contributions to Roxie. Ruthie gives a powerful "Funny Honey", and "Roxie". Meanwhile, Ute Lemper is just as entertaining. Ute has a very powerful voice. I think Ute's renditions of Velma's songs are fantastic. I think she's very comical as Velma, and I actually enjoy her accent. I can't choose who is better though, Bebe or Ute..they are both just amazing.

The London cast recording is also a plus because here the great Act 1 Finale is included, along with Roxie's Monologue. But missing is Velma's "I Can't Do It Alone" reprise. Another plus is the beautiful harmony Ute and Ruthie do in "My Own Best Friend", the harmony is definetly what the song needed.

Henry Goodman is no James Naughton, but Henry pulls off a pretty good Billy. The supporting cast is mediocre, not as good as the Broadway Revival supporting cast. And the ensemble is better on the Broadwy Revival recording. But I think the male ensemble members do better harmonies than the Broadway male ensemble members in songs like "Roxie", and "When Velma Takes The Stand".

So, this is a great version of Chicago, goes great with the Broadway Revival recording. Ruthie and Ute will amaze you!
