5 out of 5 stars i did not buy this for the chopin... but.......2006-10-30

the chopin on this disc is the most exciting piano playing i've heard in years.
i bought this cd for the ravel and prokofiev, since i heard many people say derogatory things about pogorelich's recording of chopin's second sonata.
jesus. that was the most imaginative, electrifying second sonata i've heard to date. better than pollini's, and even rubinstein's and vasary's.
believe me, this cd will make you a hard core fan of pogorelich. sheesh. along with perahia, this pianist is on the top of my favorite-living-pianists list!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Pianism........2006-09-20

This recording, already superb when originally issued with the Ravel and Prokfiev, has been made near perfect by the addition of the Chopin sonata, and DG remastering. As for the programming, listen to the Prokofiev and then the Chopin, and decide who sounds more radical. The B-flat minor sonata is a Chopin warhorse given an exciting, wild treatment by the pianist. Very refreshing, and the fireworks continue with the Ravel. These may be the finest recorded versions of the 3 pieces that constitute 'Gaspard de la Nuit'. The Prokofiev sonata is exhilarating music, both brutal and poetic. Pogorelich is an extraordinary musician, and this is a landmark recording. You pay more because the disc is an import, but don't hesitate!

5 out of 5 stars Meeting of Two Geniuses.......2005-11-05

If you've ever seen the sappy biopic w/Alan Alda's father playing George Gershwin, one of the funny scenes in it is the meeting of Gershwin and Ravel. The two take turns running themselves down. They really had a lot in common, underachievers (for different reasons) who still produced pieces of insane genius. Ravel, apparently, in an existential act of self-erasure, said at the end of his life that he produced only one masterpiece and that was an act of mere orchestration (Bolero). Well, in my humble opinion, Gaspard is one of the truly great masterpieces for the solo piano from any period. This performance is, I agree with the other reviewer, freaky in its brilliance. I can't remember the name of the pianist that Ravel composed this for, but he was insistent that the second movement, with it's bell tolling, honor the hypnotic repetition, but apparently, the pianist thought that would put the audience to sleep so he varied it and they never spoke again.) This makes this piece perfect for Pogorelich who has an incredible ability to mix the hypnotic with the dazzling technical brilliance; this piece makes an amazing showcase.

5 out of 5 stars The finest Prokofiev 6th.......2004-11-15

I'm surprised at the relatively low ratings given by other reviewers. This recording edges out several by Sviatoslav Richter as the finest performance on record of Prokofiev's epic 6th Sonata. Pogorelich brings amazing excitement to the unique simultaneously-A-major-and-minor first movement, and great delicacy to the quiet passages throughout. The rush to the conclusion of the 4th movement rondo is like rushing water. This, along with the 5th Symphony, War and Peace, and the 8th sonata, may be Prokofiev's finest work, and deserves to be much better known. Pogorelich's Ravel is nearly as well done. I agree with Argerich's famous evaluation of this pianist: "a genius!"

5 out of 5 stars Freaky brilliance.......2004-04-11

I'll grant that the interpretations on this album aren't standard fare. It is even deeply eccentric. But this is fantastic stuff.

The Gaspard is in a league of its own. It is not that the interpretation is much better than others available - such as Argerich, François or Michelangeli - but the interpretations are otherworldly. I think this is the Scarbo which is most likely to give you nightmares (appropriate, given the nature of the piece).

The Prokofiev is very ably played, although I can't compare it to any other recordings. As for the Chopin, it is a deeply satisfying, if somewhat odd, interpretation. The liner notes even acknowledge that Pogorelich ignores some of the dynamics marked by Chopin.

5 out of 5 stars The sublime poet!.......2005-05-13

Samson Francois, the eminent disciple of Alfred Cortot, always got around the extensive repertoire of concert and concentrated all his imaginative playing, idiosyncratic rapture and sublime expressiveness in the romantic genre, but avoiding in every moment to express romantically. It may be sound ironic but that was his approach along his brief existence. Born in 1924 and pitifully died in 1970, Francois gave us aristocratic readings of Chopin, Ravel, Debussy and Prokoviev.
But besides Francois was a consummate jazz player and good pool player.
This album is a remarkable selection of his relatively brief discography. The time has proved slowly the terrible fact caused by his premature departure.
Don't doubt just any second. Go for this piano colossus.

5 out of 5 stars Scary good.......2004-12-16

Everything is simply amazing on this CD. Even the Chopin played at the seemingly ill-advised speed of light sounds marvelous. I can't say enough good things about the playing of Samson Francois; as soon as his complete recordings of Ravel are available in the US, I'll be buying it. You should, too.

5 out of 5 stars A great pianist.......2001-02-04

There are many great musicians and it is difficult to say why one prefers one to another. The reason may be that certain performers embue their work with a unique personality that carries an immediate appeal. Samson Francois was such a performer. His was an original mind interpreting, exploring, playing with the music. He was often accused of waywardness and eccentricity. But in the studio he was intelligent and poetic in the best French sense. Indeed, he was at his best playing French music, Debussy and Ravel especially. His Chopin is also excellent. He deserves to be much better known.

5 out of 5 stars Samson Francois deserves to be known better.......2000-01-13

While recordings of Francois are very popular in some countries (France, Taiwan, Japan...), most of them are not available in the United States and only appeare occasionally in megastores as "imports." This is very sad because he's one of the absolutely greatest pianists in the 20th century. His Chopin recordings are classics, needless to say, but so are his Ravel, Debussy, Prokofiev, Schumann, Faure, Mozart, Scriabin, Liszt, Bach... Indeed, his playing is always special. Few pianists have more originality, imagination, or personality.

It's a shame that he didn't record any Scarlatti. With his playfulness, virtuosity, clarity of style, and his trademark "jeu perle," he could have been a great Scarlatti interpreter on the piano! (Fortunately we still have Horowitz!)

This is the decade when Deutsche Grammophon discovered America. Though the label's motherland is still well represented by Herbert von Karajan's unveiling young Anne-Sophie Mutter in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5 and Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 (both played with the freshness of youth), Carlo Maria Giulini brought the yellow label to Los Angeles in a much-heralded return to opera with Verdi's Falstaff. The mellifluous though not always dramatically attuned dream cast features Barbara Hendricks (Nannetta), Katia Ricciarelli (Alice Ford), and Renato Bruson as the most poetic Falstaff on record. Leonard Bernstein's all-star but problematic Candide and West Side Story recordings are heard in well-chosen excerpts, and the one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti is reconstituted from his opera A Quiet Place (in which it was dispersed and imbedded). Elsewhere, Ivo Pogorelich's early Chopin Sonata No. 2, Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit," and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 6 show a musician of staggering imagination limited by unrefined technique. Horowitz in Moscow, Krystian Zimerman's Chopin Ballades and Daniel Barenboim's Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 have all aged well, though Gidon Kremer's Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Giuseppe Sinopoli's Mendelssohn "Italian" Symphony paired with Schumann's Symphony No. 2 have surprisingly little to say. Mischa Maisky's Bach and Vivaldi recordings (many with Martha Argerich on modern piano) have lots to say, but not to the historically informed performance crowd. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars Superb Schumann, etc........2000-11-08

Seven years ago I was in a Vienna music shop and passed on the opportunity to buy the original Sinopoli recording of the Schumann Second - my favorite musical work - with the Vienna Philharmonic. Until this collection was released, I had never heard this particular 2nd Symphony recording which is now truly my favorite (and I have them all). It even led me to find the original release (which includes the Manfred Overture) by searching the Internet for used CDs. Sinopoli and Vienna beautifully convey the struggle and ultimate triumph of this great symphony.

The other recordings are also among DG's best and helped to fill in several repertoire gaps in my collection. I highly recommend the entire set. Thanks to DGG for reissuing these great recordings, especially Sinopoli's Schumann.

5 out of 5 stars Who says there was nothing good in the 1980s?.......2000-04-09

Not enough can be said for this marvellous compilation of some of the finest recordings from 1978-87! Nevertheless, I will try to do some justice and start at the beginning. Anne-Sophie Mutter's Mozart concerto and stellar Bruch set the tone for this set. Very few recordings have the depth of insight into the Mozart that she does, and for such a young woman! The next disc is dedicated to another violinist par excellence: Gidon Kremer, whose Tchaikowsky concerto will blow you out of your chair, even compared with the Perlman recording of the same work. Disc three focuses on Daniel Barenboim the conductor, although the last track features one of his finest recorded piano works, the paraphrase of Rigoletto by Liszt. The two recordings featured are (brace yourself), the Perlman/Paris recording of the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, the likes of which have not been known before or since, and the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony with Chicago and the organ of Chartres. The little catch in the Saint-Saens is that the organ part and orchestral work were recorded a month seperate from each other and across the Atlantic, but if you didn't read the liner notes, it would be impossible to tell; the editing is so well done! Ivo Pogorelich's Gaspard de la Nuit gives the work new meaning, not to say any less of his Chopin Second sonata. Giulini's conducting of Verdi's Falstaff is a force not to be reckoned with, with flawless casting to boot. I would expect more from Sinopoli than the Schumann delivers, however this is partly DG's fault for picking one of his least successful recordings. The Bernstein disc is all of his own music, including highlights from the splendid Candide and Trouble in Tahiti. Have a laugh over Carreras' pronunciation in West Side Story (why cast him as the American! ) and the other thoroughly inappropriate voices for this work, but remember that Bernstein was given the cold shoulder on this work and was trying to make it appeal to the classical crowd that had unfortunately shunned it on Broadway.

Maisky's cello playing is next, with the three sonatas originally for harpsichord and viola da gamba being played on modern cello with Martha Argerich at the piano. These are excellent recordings if inauthentic, but are certainly the best modernizations available, as are the two Vivaldi concerti with Orpheus. Saving the best for last, Vladimir Horowitz's landmark 1986 return to Moscow is no less breathtaking on the 1000th listening than on the first. There may be no better single CD of piano music in existance; the simplest track "Träumerei" from Schumann's Kinderszenen is utter perfection and emotion molded into one. Zimerman holds his own beautifully, though, with some of the best Chopin Ballades to be had. True, they lack some of the momentum and drive of the Rubinstein recordings, but the sheer technical ability displayed along with absolute control (and they're not at all skimpy on the emotion either!), they are in the top five recordings of these works ever. Add to this his recording of the Liszt E-flat concerto with Seiji Ozawa/Boston Symphony, which is flawless. The cherry on top (!) is the Liszt Totentanz, which is so often played as an overly flashy, bangy, loud and raucous showpiece. Not so here, even in such a murderously difficult and crashing work, Zimerman displays control, even if it means wrestling the work to the floor. This set is pricey, no doubt, but well worth it (and the sore arms you'll get carrying it home, another good reason to mail-order it) for the unmatched brilliance.

5 out of 5 stars MICHELANGELI AT HIS BEST.......2002-03-03

Michelangeli treated London very well -- he actually used to turn up for the concerts he promised. He would wander on to the platform looking as if he was wondering whether he could still cancel, but he not only stayed but usually played his unique best. It's only fair to say that this is rather a short recital in case that influences anyone's choice. It contains a pleasant Clementi sonata that I had not heard previously, a performance of Gaspard that beggars belief, and one of M's better accounts of the Chopin Bflat minor. The finale of the Clementi is a set of variations and I'm not enough of a Clementi scholar to know whether M plays them all or not. To be philistine about it, he plays quite enough of them to satisfy me. It is a an agreeable sonata, but the real interest for me here is to listen to it as a vehicle for that strange unique and wonderful tone-production. Next comes Gaspard, and that is another story. You might just find it slightly restrained compared with, say, Gavrilov, or you might, as I do, find it a musical experience without parallel. The diabolic elements are not 'in your face' in this interpretation -- the spray of sound at the end of Ondine is more a great wave and the grotesqueries in Scarbo are fuller-toned than usual. That suits me fine: I have no particular taste for the diabolic but I have an insatiable appetite for the musical and what haunts me in this Scarbo is the pulsing vibrato near the start and a truly wondrous remote pealing effect near the end. The rest of the disc consists of one of his better performances of the Chopin Bflat minor sonata. I'm not actually sure that M is my favourite player in this piece. If you can ignore Horowitz's ridiculously slow first movement he is at his prodigious best afterwards, and on a smoothed-out average basis the urbane Rubinstein is maybe still the best after all these years. However if you have bought this disc for Gaspard or if you are a Michelangeli-collector you will have acquired a version like no other of Chopin's weird finale -- deep-toned gliding and hammerless, the very antithesis of Horowitz's approach and every bit as wonderful, indeed for me the greatest of all. Not a lot of music for your money then, but who cares? In Michelangeli we have a phenomenon we are never likely to encounter again.

An addendum on the Chopin Bflat minor sonata -- I have now got to know Cziffra's record, and that is my new top choice (and in the B minor too). His funeral march is categorically the best I have ever heard and if anyone rivals M in the last movement it is Cziffra. His interpretation is totally different, bleak and chilling with a weird eruption near the end. He also goes very light on repeats, and in as far as this piece is concerned I would echo the line in Hamlet 'For this relief much thanks'.
