Revueltas: Orchestral Music

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This sounds more like an anthology of Mexican orchestral music than the work of one composer. Sensemayá is the best-known music here, and it fulfills our expectation of Revueltas as a kind of Mexican Stravinsky, with a folk-influenced base supporting tangy dissonances and exciting rhythms. Some of the music in the two other scores is similarly adventurous, while other sections are almost pops-concert material. The Night of the Mayas is film music, uncommonly interesting for such work. The Girl Colonel is an unfinished ballet, completed by two other Mexican composers with sections from other Revueltas film scores. It's all thoroughly involving and worthwhile music, well played by an obscure, recently formed (1989) Mexican orchestra and vividly recorded. Because of its mix of well-known and uncommon music, the disc serves equally well as an introduction to Revueltas and as a delight to those who already love his music. It's also an even better bargain than the Naxos disc. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Spirited playing of fine compositions.......2007-07-07

This Revueltas anthology is very well played by first class orchestras. The selections by Mata and de la Fuente are particularly played with spirit and verve.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Compositions Brilliantly Performed.......2007-05-03

If you enjoy Bartok & Stravinsky, you will adore Revueltas. Among the 15 works are two versions of sensemaya plus Cuauhnahuac and La Noche de los Mayas, all richly evocative of the ancient Mayan culture which underlies that of Mexico - bold tributes to proud traditions not unlike the musical paintings of the Caucasus peoples rendered by Khachaturian. The music of Revueltas deserves much wider performance in the world, but probably will not be often heard due to its technical complexity and the need for specialized native instruments for some of the passages. At least Leopold Stokowski recognized the brilliance of this spectacular work.

5 out of 5 stars Stokowski's Sensemaya.......2005-10-10

Great, great release. One of the reviews here (by "127") said that the Stokowski version of Sensemaya was interesting "historically but not musically" and I just wanted to strongly disagree with that. Leopold Stokowski has the orchestra playing in a different time-signature than the composer wrote! The piece is written mostly in 7 but this performance seems to have put the whole thing into 4 (it's probably more complicated than that but you get the idea) and the resulting performance is even more hectic and bombastic than the other recorded version of Sensemaya on the same CD. I don't know why Stokowski did this, but this performance is the most unique I've heard (of the piece.) Whether or not this is a "good" thing I don't want to get into but the recording is definitely very interesting and worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Revueltas Works.......2003-04-09

Unlike many people I think, I've been a fan of Revueltas since I was quite young...I first heard Sensemaya at the age of 12 and was blown away. Unfortunately, for years most of his music was rather hard to find...darn near impossible actually. However, the composer has recently picked up a number of higher profile champions (including Esa Pekka Salonen) and a spate of rereleases during his Centennial a few years ago. Such a rediscover is long overdue!

This current CD is part of the Centennial celebration of Revueltas. It consists of a compilation of orchestral recordings by Eduardo Mata, chamber recordings by David Aetherton and the Jalapa Orquestra Sinfonica under Herrara de la Fuente. The results are quite stunning, with enough material to keep you listening for quite some time!

The first CD contains exclusively orchestral music under the baton of Maestro Mata. This is prime stuff indeed. The CD begins with Revueltas' most renowned piece, Sensemaya, a dense, barbaric orchestral fantasy inspired by a Cuban poem that details a traditional snake-killing ceremony in the Santeria religion. The piece is dominated by short pithy melodic statements which are gradually layered over each other to create greater and greater tension. The result is deeply compelling, Stravinsky's Rite is combined with Varese's Arcana...with native Mexican rhythms and instruments thrown in.

The other works on the album are also extremely compelling. They can be broken down into abstract orchestral works, chamber pieces and music for film. In addition, Revueltas shows two definate sides, one is the convinced modernist, who shows a lot in common with Varese, and even Scriabin. The best work in this vein is the Danza geometrica (and it's chamber version Planos). The other big vein is the "nationalistic" vein, of which Revueltas was a greater exponent than his compatriot Chavez. Many works on this CD, Itinerios, Homage to Garcia Lorca, and others display a sense of wild abandon present in traditional fiestas. And yet, even here, Revueltas is a formalist and modernist, treating his material less as color and more as another structural element.

The other really wonderful work on this disc is La Noche de los Mayas. Culled from a film score, this is beautifully written film music and quite ahead of it's time. It's not hard to imagine these Revueltas strains as an inspiration to Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein and the like. The work is structured as a large symphony, dominated by a broad, tonal but dissonant theme in the brass. There is a wealth of detail in this work that I come back to over and over.

Much of this material has very little competition. The chamber works have been basically neglected on CD and many of the orchestral works are only available on this disc. Sensemaya has significant competition however. Salonen has done a really wonderful disc of this material, which also includes a great reading of Noche. Bernstein has perhaps the best reading of Sensemaya available on his Latin American Fiesta album (which also includes a wonderful rendition of Chavez' Sinfonia India)But Mata's reading is nearly as good as Bernstein and just as good as Salonen. Overall, for breadth and depth of music covered, this is a superlative disc and the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract but deep........2003-02-05

I've got this cd when I first heard of this composer. He is the biggest composer that Mexico has had to offer to the classical music scene. Mexico has a variety of notable composers such as Chavez but none of them match Revueltas impact on the scene.

This cd pretty much has all of Revueltas' major works including his most known one: Sensemaya. That piece has been conducted by Bernstein and Stowkowski with the latter being on this disc. There is two performances of Sensemaya which includes the one mentioned above and a new version.

The best piece I believe is Janitzio. If you are Mexican you will be reminded of Mexican big bands because Revueltas incorporated the sound into this piece as well as imitations of a Mariachi band. It is a very abstract piece but very remenicent of Mexico. Excellent cd as a whole.
The cd includes a booklet with information on Revueltas and the pieces on this cd.

Tellingly, classical albums whose liner notes are translated into Spanish--in addition to the traditional English, French, and German--tend to be those that contain music by Spanish-speaking composers and ensembles. This distinction goes to the heart of the "discovery" of the music of composer Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) during the mid-to-late 1990s, evidenced by a steady series of releases after decades of near silence. And silence does not suit Revueltas, who favored enthralling, brash, maximalist symphonic expression, and whose work will not sound entirely new to new audiences, even though his clout as a major cultural figure stops at the border of his native country, Mexico.

This sort of déjà entendu familiarity is generally the case with any composer who absorbs "folk" material (think Béla Bartók or, especially, Aaron Copland). To hear regional military horns bellow through Revueltas's large-scale Ventanas for Large Orchestra is to have dozens of western films flash through the mind's eye. And to hear subtle mariachi motifs inform the arrangement of the same composition, or in the countless set-piece segments of the highly varied Ocho por Radio, is to hear a thorough imagination at play. Revueltas understood foremost that simple themes magnified to an orchestral scale require additional detail to fill the space, and he achieves his goal with richly embroidered counterpoint, overlays of dissociated themes, and strong writing for single instruments, as with the woodwind patter in First Little Serious Piece. That said, conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen's renderings seem a bit removed from Revueltas; he can unnecessarily reinforce the film-music-like quality of some of the material. This is lively, at times volatile, and often humorous music, and should be played as such. --Marc Weidenbaum

5 out of 5 stars TRUST ME!!!.......2006-02-10

So yeah, Revueltas is not one of those big name 20th century composers like Stravinsky or Copland - especially when he's from Mexico - but you got to give him a chance. When I listened to his music, I was immersed with such sensation.

His music is one of a kind, with distinctive rhythm, exoticism, and Latin-American feel. His orchestration is one of the most colorful and fascinating things I have ever heard - things you may never get in traditional or even 20th century European Classical music. This is especially apparent in his two masterpieces: "Sensamaya" and "Night of the Mayas".

Unless you're some stubborn ultra-conservative person who enjoys Mozart more than Beethoven, and utterly denouce 20th century music, you definitely got to buy this album - a whole new world of Classical Music awaits! TRUST ME!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Modern Mexican Music.......2006-01-28

The Mexican expressionist composer Silvestre Revueltas, now well known for his incessant rhythms, wanted to change the state of authentic, Mexican-based classical music, from nationalistic folk-based sounds, to his more urgent and dissonant style of expressionism.

Revueltas' most famous work, Sensamaya, based on the poem Song to kill a snake, is evocative of his style. Constant rhythms, with authentic Hispanic percussion, and modern orchestrations, gritty melodies and harmonies, create an almost industrial sound. On this recording is the 1938 fully orchestrated version of near bombasticity. Two other works on this disk are also written for full orchestra: La Noche de los Mayas and Ventanas. La Noche de los Mayas is intended to evoke ancient Mexican tribal feelings from the Mayan culture. Almost in symphonic form, the four movements follow a classical structure, moderate first movement, scherzo, lyrical third movement, and a theme and variations for the final movement. The incredibly serene and melodic opening, with occasional majestic outbursts of brass and percussion, shows Revueltas' innate ability to combine Mexican culture with classical music. The scherzo second movement, subtitled Jaranas, is almost a classical Mariachi, with witty lightness; whereas the third movement, subtitled Yucatan, has a melancholy calm featuring lush strings, woodwind melodies, and folk-like elements. Extra-musical effects, extensive percussion, and variation technique, show Reveultas' capabilities of diverse compositional techniques as a 20th century modern composer. Interesting sounds and combinations make a very engaging conclusion. Much like Sensamaya, Ventanas is very rhythmical and industrious sounding, featuring in this case, the brass section and tuba solo. Angular melodies, sometimes folk sounding, other times classically based, and clashes of dissonance, along with perpetual motion (even during the subdued middle section), is evocative of expressionism and the influence of Stravinsky.

Three chamber works are also included on this CD: Ocho for Radio, Homage to Frederico Garcia Lorca, and Revueltas' set of two Little Serious Pieces. Each has a unique assortment of instruments and are in smaller proportions to the previously mentioned portions of the disk. Ocho for Radio is a musical answer to a mathematical equation. Featuring eight players, the music has so much going on, it nearly sounds Ivesian. The main idea prevails, however, including a mariachi trumpet and string section, along with two woodwinds and one percussionist. The Homage to Lorca, in three movements (Dance, Sorrow, and Sound) begins with familiar sounding Mexican ideas, with slightly humorous dissonances and motives, includes piano, piccolo, and tuba. The ambiguous sounds of the middle, give an uneasy feeling of impatient monotony, while the concluding movement is in a revelatory and joyous mood with occasional clashings of dissonance and jazzy inflections. The two Serious Little Pieces are charming miniatures: the first, a swift pointilistic whirlwind, the second, a slow waltz. Scored for wind quintet with baritone saxophone, a rustic sound is created.

I personally like to explore new music, and this all Revueltas CD seemed appropriate. The music is diverse, featuring classicism, Mexican folk attributes, expressionism, and tribal rhythms and modes, not to mention the diverse literary sources and instrumentations. The music is modern sounding with particular influences of Stravinsky, dissonance and polytonality are often used. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Los Angeles New Music Group under Esa-Pekka Salonen play admirably on some rhythmically virtuosic music. Salonen elicits very different sounds from work to work, making the CD varied. After listening, I am personally not astounded by the compositions, nor put off, but satisfactorily interesting. Make sure you like the music before purchasing. In any case, if you are looking for different and new music, this is a quality CD with a good performance, although, you may want to compare other compilations under conductor Eduardo Mata.

5 out of 5 stars Silvestre Revueltas: A Too Short Life but a Rich Musical Legacy.......2005-10-19

MUSIC OF SILVESTRE REVUELTAS is one of those CDs that, once in the library, is a disc that enjoys frequent hearings. This is music of deep convictions by a composer who seemed on the brink of entering the highest echelon of 20th Century composers when he died from alcoholism in 1940 (at age 41!). He brought the sounds, pulsations, exotic rhythms, and folk music from Mexico to the classical concert stage in a way that is as important as what Stravinsky did for the Russian idiom, Copeland did for the American idiom, and Bartok is for the Hungarian idiom.

This superb CD includes a fine overview of Revueltas' output. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the L.A. Philharmonic's New Music Ensemble in both large and small works. The 'La Noche de los Mayas, suite for orchestra' is as lush and gorgeous a work for orchestra as anything he wrote. But it is in 'Homenaje a Federico García Lorca for Chamber Orchestra' that the complexity and the drama of Revueltas' compositional powers are clearly evident. Also included are the now standard 'Sensemayá', 'Ocho por Radio', 'Ventanas' and two 'Little Serious Pieces'.

The performances are clear, transparent, full of bite and energy and very much in line with the quality of sound and interpretation we've come to expect form Salonen and his forces. In Salonen, Revueltas has found a solid supporter and we can only hope there will be many more recordings of this sensual and exciting music! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for Revueltas and Salonen!.......1999-08-30

Silvestre Revueltas was an enfant terrible of 20th century music in Mexico (compare his compositions to those of the more conservative Carlos Chavez). His works are highly appealing to the contemporary ear by virtue of their intense rhythmicity, creative orchestration and dark undertones which are often counterbalanced by brilliant Mexican motifs. After listening to this enlightening selection of some Revueltas' finest works for full orchestra and chamber ensemble, I wondered what other masterworks might have been composed by one who died too young. Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians really do justice to these innovative pieces. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......1999-05-10

What fun music! Salonen's other discs are great, but this is like a breath of fresh air. Revueltas's music is highly entertaining and pleasant to listen to. The LAPO plays fantastically and the recording quality is excellent. Go ahead and buy this one, it won't disappoint!

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

Maestro Lenny was at his best in this extroverted, highly rhythmic music. The Batuque by Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez will be a discovery for most people, a tremendously exciting orchestral showpiece. There's lots more excitement in the pieces by Guarnieri, Revueltas (a stunning performance of the great Sensemayá), and two pieces by the tourist Aaron Copland. (This version of El Salón México is Bernstein's stereo recording; Sony has already reissued his earlier mono one.) The late Netania Davrath sings beautifully in the familiar Villa-Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. Sony's remastering is really first- rate. But there should have been more than 53 minutes of music, even on this mid-priced reissue. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars An exotic delight.......2005-05-14

With the exception of the Copland pieces, these are the works of Latin American composers looking for--and finding--their own voice within the tradition of 20th century orchestral music. Four pieces are particularly noteworthy: the justly beloved Bachianas Brasileiras #5 (superbly sung by Natania Devrath), the propulsive Batuque, Sensemaya (a Mesoamerican "Rite of Spring"), and Chavez' "Sinfonia India." This last is not "misplaced geographically" (contrary to an earlier, otherwise helpful review); Chavez, writing in 1936, used the word "Indian" to refer to the native inhabitants of Mexico. He wrote that he and his colleagues in Mexico had to "free ourselves from the stuffy conservatory tradition, the worst kind of academic stagnation. We have found ourselves by going back to the cultural traditions of the Indian racial stock that still accounts for four-fifths of the people."

When I was a lad I went to a Young People's Concert in Manhattan. Bernstein trotted onto the podium and launched into Batuque, followed by many of the works on this disc. This recording was made right at that time of this concert and captures its joy, its sense of exploration, its energy.

4 out of 5 stars South of the Border, With Panache.......2002-01-11

Jaunty. Fanciful. Riveting. Mysterious. Ominous.
There's a very wide range of emotions embodied in "Latin American Fiesta", a first-rate tribute to five Latino composers (and one Gringo) represented within this excellent collection. Bernstein and the Philharmonic really lay into the pieces that call for it, so much so that you may glance over your shoulder during "Sensemaya". "Batuque" is commanding; "Dansa brasileira", playful and way too short. The last work, "Sinfonia India", is misplaced geographically (not by the composer's ethnicity), but it's a highly evocative journey into the Subcontinent and a fitting capstone.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable musical excursion.

5 out of 5 stars my hero, Maestro Lenny.......2001-02-25

The re-mastering of this CD is amazing, and these recordings deserved the technical wizardry. It's the kind of music Leonard Bernstein was at his most incredibly brilliant at...rhythmic, emotional, and full of energy.

His interpretation of Copland has always been known as the "definitive" one, and in these two pieces, you can see why. The next three selections are by Brazilian composers, the most well known being Villa-Lobos' "Bachiana Brasileira # 5", here sung so beautifully by Netania Davrath.

Silvestre Revueltas' "Sensemayá" is fabulous. Reminiscent of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" in parts, though 100 % Mexican in feeling. It throbs with vitality, and the intensity of its rhythms is astounding...it's also a hard act to follow, which is Carlos Chavez' lot here with his beautiful "Sinfonia India". This piece may take a few hearings to fully appreciate, as there's a lot going on in it, like complex counterpoint, etc.

In my student years, I found a way (not telling how !) to hear the N.Y. Philharmonic rehearse, and would sit in total awe of Maestro Lenny...his genius and his humanity. He was my first hero, and though I never met him, my "father figure". This CD just exudes his presence...it's a special treat for anyone who ever saw him "make music" in person, and experienced the magic of it.

5 out of 5 stars Netania Davrath is the star of this release.......2001-01-25

In addition to the review mentioned above, the recording of the Bachianas is the star here. Soprano Netania Davrath recorded this right after a performance with Bernstein in New York during one of her tours. This recording pops up in many anthologies which is great as that way it can be shared with more music lovers. Davrath is best known for her complete recording of Songs of the Auvergne on Vanguard. Enjoy Davrath along with these fine works from composers from south of the border. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinante!.......2003-09-20

        Album Description

This CD brings together compositions from slightly more than a hundred years, featuring treatments of the "railroad" theme--now idyllic or impressionistic, now realistic or even smacking of social criticism, but in classical form. The feeling of intoxication induced by sheer speed, the implacability of mechanical forces, the menace inherent in acceleration, the clatter of the wheels, the whistling and hooting of the valves, but also the stillness following a thunderous journey--all these are found with varying degrees of accentuation in the colorful and exciting orchestral works featured on this disc. A highly enjoyable, thematic program, presented with great enthusiasm by the Kaiserslautern ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recording and Timely Recognition.......2001-06-30

I concur with the previous 5-star review. Three years ago there was little hope that these works would receive a hearing and now we have one, WHAT a hearing. A must for any fan of Latin American music and especially Silvestre Revueltas.

          1 out of 5 stars A neglected composer.......2000-10-27

Bates recommends Dorian 90244 as a more interesting piece. conducted by a more notable musician Matas Why is label and catalog # not availble on your site?

          5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recording.......1998-11-18

I was quite surprised at this wonderful recording. As a big fan of Revueltas' work, I was excited that another major work was released. The production and selection of material for the disk was done very well, but what surprised me was brilliant musicianship from this ensemble (Santa Barbara) that made for a truly enjoyable disk. This has to rank as one of the finest interpretations of a Revueltas work in recent memory. Great interpretation and conducting by Ben-Dor!
