German composer Michael Praetorius, whose life bridged the 16th and 17th centuries, was one of his era's most prolific writers, both of musical works and of works about music. His "Syntagma Musicum" remains one of the most important treatises on instruments and performance practice; he composed many volumes of Protestant hymn-based works, motets, psalms, works for multiple choir, and Latin music for the Lutheran service. The "Magnificat" performed on this program is one of 14 that Praetorius included in his Megalynodia Sionia, published in 1611. Its polyphonic style and rich instrumental writing--particularly for brass--is occasionally reminiscent of Gabrieli, whose works Praetorius studied; or Schutz, with whom he traveled throughout Germany. The Huelgas Ensemble, "one of Europe's best-known groups specializing in performance of polyphonic music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance," gives an exemplary account of this little-known but prodigiously deserving music. --David Vernier

    Howard Arman has a respectable but ultimately not very exciting approach to this music of this period. Both his Schelle Christmas Story (on Capriccio) and Schutz Exequien (on Berlin) are well played and characterised by imaginative programming, but lack the drama that someone like Gardiner or McCreesh can instill. This disc, I'm afraid, is a fairly pedestrian trawl through equally well trodden pieces.

      Mainly vocal church music, performed with grace and beauty by The Huelgas Ensemble. Well recorded with clear vocals, yet with enough ambient reverberation to bring to mind a cathedral setting. Instrumentals add support but are not highlighted and blend beautifully with the voices.

      For any one who loves complex vocals and beautiful harmonies, this is well worth adding to your collection.

      Praetorius is one of those composers who is well known by name, and everyone knows a few of the famous pieces, but most of his music goes unheard by the average listener. This disc by the Huelgas Ensemble has none of the "greatest hits" of Praetorius, but is none-the-less filled with beautiful, if understated, music.

      It is anchored on each end by substantial works, a contrapuntal Magnificat based on a rising scale motive, and a setting of Psalm 116. In between are five motets on German or Latin texts. Being a pragmatic man, Praetorius gave great latitude regarding the performance of his music, and suggested that the distribution of the forces be determined by what forces were available. This means that much of this music can be sound either intimate or very grand depending on what the performers choose.

      Van Nevel always seems to opt for a relatively subdued, yet deep sound. There is a certain earthiness to the sound his singers and instrumentalists produce; a reediness that is richly textured, not overly brilliant. I find it very attractive.

      All of the music presented here is good, but my two favorites are Aus tiefer Not schrei and Venite exultemus Domino.

      Beautiful, warm, straight-tone singing. Artistic phrasing. Perfect intonation. Fabulous organ chorales. This recording is on a par with the best of the Boston Camerata and Harry Christoper's The Sixteen.

      The Cambridge Bach Ensemble has given new life to seldom performed motets of 17th century German composers including Scheidt, Schein, and Schutz. The eight singers give amazing clarity to the vocal lines and are always aware of the text. The basso continuo is rendered impeccably throughout. The recording of Bach's motet "Komm, Jesu, Komm" alone is worth the price of the disk. The singers, especially sopranos Ellen Hargis and Pamela Murray, make this difficult motet sound completely effortless.

      The liner notes by director Scott Metcalfe and organist Peter Sykes are thorough, interesting and informative. Just an added bonus to a truly exquisite recording.
